we first told you at 5:00. we just learned police are also on the scene of a double shooting on north harrison street, about 20 blocks away. we don't know if these two shootings are connected, but we'll continue to work to get new details on each of these cases. to decision 2016 now. today another sign that governor chris christie's presidential campaign is struggling to gain support in the polls, take a look. a new monmouth university poll focused on the new hampshire primary. chris christie is at 5:00%. still far behind the leaders there. marco rubio made the biggest surge by moving into third place, ben carson remains in second and donald trump is in first place with a large lead there, 26%. so we sent nbc 10's south jersey bureau reporter cydney long and she's joining us now. we know he loves to speak his

mind. any signs he's ready to throw in the towel? >> reporter: absolutely not. governor christie is not worried one bit, jim, saying a vast majority of voters are still undecided. today he did three things, recognized local police given the racial tension issues nationwide. he also didn't mince words about president obama's visit to new jersey, perhaps designating himself as a law and order candidate. >> do you want me to answer or you want to answer? >> reporter: his answers earned him one of the so-called declared winners of last week's republican debate. >> because i got to tell you the truth, even in new jersey what you're doing is called rude. >> reporter: rude hosts, almost nonexistent poll numbers and daily suggestions chris christie should drop out of the race don't have him blinking an eye. >> 80% of those polled haven't made up their mind. >> reporter: christie applauding

homicide and crime stats down, an agenda he's been able to boast on the national stage. >> 2011 to 2014 crime in new jersey's down 20% while incarceration in new jersey has fallen by nearly 10%. i don't think you'd find almost any other place in the country where that's being done. >> reporter: part of his national message, standing up for law enforcement where he says president barack obama has not done so. >> i believe black lives matters is a destructive movement that's antilaw enforcement. >> reporter: he says camden is proof positive there does not need to be a divide between police and communities they serve. when we asked about how the rnc and campaigns will move forward after a divide with nbc and cnbc on the tone of last week's debate, christie is over it, saying other candidates are wasting their breath. >> whether nbc has a debate or not, i could care less. i don't care who the networks are to cover it. make sure it's on the air somewhere so real voters can see it. >> reporter: christie held a similar event with camden metro

police back in july, but what made today different, he signed an executive order that will recognize november 5th, this thursday, as law enforcement appreciation day in new jersey. live in camden, cydney long, nbc 10 news. and tomorrow across our region voters will head to the polls for another election day, the biggest race in our area is for mayor of philadelphia. democrat jim kenney and republican melissa murray bailey square off tomorrow. registered democratic voters outnumber republicans roughly 7-1 in philadelphia. here's a look at polling hours in our area. in pennsylvania and delaware, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in new jersey you can vote from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. it's november, of course, so turning to our weather, this is weird, you're going to be able to wear shorts this week. nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now with his first alert forecast. temperatures in the 70s.

going to feel nice. >> i'm not wearing shorts this week. >> come on. >> i put the winter coat away for a while, you're not going to need that this week, and it gets dark earlier. yeah, cools down even on the mild days. it's a mild day today and that's going to be the coldest day of the week. here comes the drier air to the west, the clouds have been with this. this is satellite and radar, no rain close by. you can see how far away that rain is down by norfolk, virginia, so we have no rain to deal with for a good while. temperatures, 61 degrees, our high today was 65. this is the average high for this time of the year, 61. we're already above that, but it's dropped down to 52 in pottstown, 51 in lancaster, and it will, of course, continue to drop, we have calm winds and once we get these clouds breaking up, the temperature will be able to go down into the 40s. not so much by midnight, at least not in philadelphia, but mid 40s by about 5:00 a.m. and

then tomorrow morning the sun starts coming out. and when that happens, the temperature is going to be shooting up. how warm it's going to get and for how long with the seven day in a few minutes. violent weekend on the streets of philadelphia. 14 people shot, including the murder of a 16-year-old boy. he was gunned down on his bike in strawberry mansion yesterday afternoon. police commissioner charles ramsey says this is a reminder we have to get guns off the streets. >> you know, early november, there are people right now in our city walking around that will not live to see the end of the year. that's just a fact. and until we get our heads around it and do something about it and stop, you know, every time somebody, you know, you touch somebody, then start complaining about it, all of a sudden cops are the bad guys. we're out here to keep these streets safe. >> ramsey says someone knows

something about it. sentencing day for the man who killed a mother and her three children while street racing. a judge sentenced akhmedov between 17 and 34 years in prison. he ran over and killed samara banks and three of her sons. they were crossing the boulevard in 2013. a fourth son survived the accident. the other driver is serving five to ten years in prison after bleeding guilty in this case. an arrest in a cold case murder that shook up a south jersey community. john blocker is now charged with murder in connection with a home invasion dating back to 2006. several men tied up juan cuevas' children, when cuevas and his wife got home, they beat him to death. police are still looking for the other suspects and they have never revealed a motive. today a new jersey senator says he's going to introduce a

bill that regulates fantasy sports websites just days after governor christie ridiculed the idea. senator jimwayla waeiland says bill is different than other states. he wants daily fantasy sports designated as a game of skill and not chance. he also wants casinos to partner with the websites. new at 6:00, a distress call was answered, at least for now. the s.s. united states conservancy says it raised more than $100,000 in the past few days from supporters around the globe. the historic ocean liner is stationed in philadelphia. there's talk it may have to be sold for scrap metal. the conservancy needs more than $60,000 per month to keep the rehab project per float. the s.s. united states, once the world's fastest ocean liner, launched in 1952 after a secret cold war project. a temporary lifeline came through today to keep public schools open. this morning the school district

learned it will get a $250 million loan to cover the costs for the rest of the year, but interests on that loan could end up costing an additional $2.5 million. the district is in this predicament because state lawmakers have gone 125 days without agreeing to a new budget. an ocean city beach supervisor hopes to avoid jail time for having sex with a teenaged girl who was his employee. charles cusack is also a retired police officer. today he pleaded guilty right before his trial started. he made a deal with cape may prosecutors so they'll recommend probation. he'll also have to register as a sex offender. he says the sex was consensual. she was 17 years old. next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, tainted candy. tonight a look at the halloween treats that concerned parents, as well as police. also, helping prisoners return to society. tonight president obama's trip to new jersey and the focus on

atlantic county didn't allow its elected politicians to take large donations from contractors doing business with the county. then will pauls changed the law, allowing him to pocket thousands of dollars in campaign cash. now pauls is taking thousands from those who want to move casinos to north jersey, threatening our jobs and our local economy. and he said he wants the vote to allow north jersey casinos "this year." we just can't trust will pauls.

this is nbc 10 news. >> right now at 6:00 we have this new video of a deadly encounter inside this local meat store and it's the owners who dish out the punishment. the d.a. says it was self-defense. store owners opened fire when armed robbers stormed their store over the weekend. the deadly shooting was all caught on video. the berks county d.a. says it was the most violent robbery he has seen. nbc 10's doug shimell reports from reading. >> reporter: as you can see, shooting coming in. the store owners say three masked men walked into the latino meat market without saying a word and opened fire. rounds hit the cigarette sign and candy machine before reading police say the owner and his brother fired back, killing two of the robbers. >> i was worried because they are great people. >> reporter: regular customers say they know the employees are traumatized, but there was little time to think. >> somebody comes into your establishment and start shooting at you, you're going to have to defend yourself, so i think

that's just a good call to be self-defense. >> he came in with guns blazing. >> reporter: late in the day, berks county district attorney john adams said no charges are warranted against the store owners. >> this is a case of self-defense, this is a case of justification and, quite frankly, simple and easy decision. >> they are offering a $10,000 reward for the gunman who got away. police in chester county still trying to figure out where two children got halloween candy with sewing needles inside. these pictures show the tampered candy bars. police say the kids reported trick-or-treating in the same neighborhood on saturday. they tell us the first child checked his candy after seeing social media posts warning people about tainted candy, then a saekd child came forward. police are asking all residents to check their candy. president obama visited new jersey today. the commander in chief putting

the spotlight on prisoners and the bigger focus is how to help transition inmates once they are back out into society. nbc 10's brian thompson reports from new jersey. >> reporter: served 30 years in prison for murder he committed at just 15 years old. this one-stop re-entry center in jersey city is a life line for him and hundreds of others. >> i never had a job in my life other than working inside of a prison, put me in a re-entry program, which is what was done, put me in housing, and from that point on to this point i've been doing tremendously well. >> reporter: now he's working at the cocoa bakery in town and says he has self worth. he sat down with former governor jim mcgrievy and me to talk about prisoner re-entry. this one-stop center offers intense consultation, even dress clothes for job interviews. >> the person reintegrating into society, nothing is there for him. and that's what's almost so

barbaric. >> reporter: mcgrievy has been working for years at the hudson county jail to help inmates survive life outside these barred walls. nationally 67%, two-thirds of released prisoners were arrested for a new crime within three years, but at martin's place, with its intense programming, the rearrest rate was 22% over the past three years. >> this myth about everybody that comes out of prison got a sour soul is crazy, it's not true. >> reporter: several state and local level initiatives to help re-entry programs, including expanding a tech training program. >> finding a new path, getting their lives straightened out in a way that allows them to support their families. >> reporter: as this debate heats up nationally, he says he'll soon be opening prisoner re-entry programs in newark, paterson, and even toms river. in jersey city, brian thompson, nbc 10 news.

president obama sits down for an exclusive interview with lester holt tonight on nbc nightly news right after this broadcast. a delaware man who risked his own life to help slaved escape was posthumously pardoned today in dover, exactly 168 years when samuel burress was found guilty of helping slaves escape. there's a historical marker that honors burress. he was a free black man from kent county. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> yeah, may be a bit of a shock to the system, it's dark this early. we saw sunset right around 5:00 this afternoon. but it's going to get warmer. yeah, the days are shorter, but we've got a warm weather pattern that's going to stay warm all week. we'll talk about the next shower

chances. we don't have any big storms, that's for sure, in this seven-day forecast. we've had clouds for much of the day, but no rain anywhere close by. 61 degrees right now, still mostly cloudy. the winds only five miles an hour and right around the same temperature we were yesterday. it's 52 degrees in pottstown, 53 in mount holly, 51 in lancaster, but milder elsewhere, and it got well into the 60s in allentown because there was more sunshine there. sunshine in the poconos, too. the clouds were thicker down in southern delaware and extreme south jersey. that will not be the case tomorrow. we're going to be getting warmer. today we got 65, just like yesterday. 73 tuesday, and then a couple of days in the mid 70s. what about november overall? look what happens on an average year, the high goes from 61 down to 50, and the sunrise gets later. the sunset earlier. the days just keep shrinking.

but the overall weather pattern is a mild one, and so i'm predicting that there will be way more days with above average temperatures than below. we got a cold front every week or so, but overall four to six degrees above normal for temperatures and probably below normal for precipitation this month. doesn't mean anything about the winter, but this month it does. here's the cloud cover thinning out across pennsylvania and pushing that rain that was to our south even farther to our south, so there's no threat of any of that. now as we go through the next couple of days, of course, we're starting off with the mild air, we have a weak system coming in on thursday. you can see just a slight chance of a shower there. not very impressive, but the warm air is impressive, because well into the 70s and stay there, friday could be the warmest day of all. then the cold front comes down. look, there's just no doubt about this, there's no doubt that it's going to be warm through the rest of the week and

there's no doubt there's going to be colder air on the weekend. lots of times there are a lot of uncertainties in weather forecast. in this case the general trend of warm all week and colder over the weekend, you can count on that. 48 degrees in philadelphia, 42 north and west. and during the day tomorrow with a lot of sunshine, temperatures getting into the 70s. average high is 61 remember and look at these temperatures. 75 for wednesday and thursday, slight chance of a shower thursday. maybe the warmest day on friday. then a chance of some showers on saturday. ten degrees of a drop there, another ten on sunday. so sunday's kind of chilly. a cold wind and monday stays chilly, too, but it's going to warm up after that. hey, i'm john clark, we're live at malcolm jenkins' big event tonight. we'll have him live here one on one talking about the big game
