that breaking news about the future of philadelphia's police department. mayor-elect jim kenney will name his choice for police commissioner. he will appoint current first deputy commissioner richard ross this afternoon. ross has spent more than 26 years with the department. he will take over for commissioner charles ramsey who plans to retire in january. meanwhile, police are investigating a double shooting inside a local home. a man and woman are both wounded and both are listed in critical condition. nbc 10's monique braxton is live on the scene in mayfair where the question is who shot whom. monique, what can you tell us? >> reporter: vai, that question is still unanswered by philadelphia police investigators, but we can tell

you what they've told me is that instead of a little girl getting ready for school this morning, she was calling police to report gunfire inside of her home. now, you can see that a police car still guards the scene. we've also learned detectives have been here, but right now they're awaiting a search warrant so the forensic unit may go inside 6241 mershon. here's video we've gathered. investigators say they were called to the mayfair home by a child just before 7:00. when police arrived, they found a husband and wife with gunshot wounds. police still don't know exactly what happened, whether they were shooting at each other or if there was an attempted murder/suicide. >> if there's been no prior domestic calls to this location so we don't know what precipitated it at this point. they're both in surgery, obviously, so we have to wait a little bit of time to get that information. >> reporter: investigators say the unidentified man is in extremely critical condition.

barack obama pays his respects to the men and women in the armed forces, the tomb of the unknown soldier. we continue to monitor this situation. we'll bring you back as time warrants. meanwhile, bucks county students honored veterans this morning. they gathered at the veterans wall in war minister which pays tributes to district alumni, faculty and staff who served in the military. additional veterans names were added to the wall this year. a man died in a crash in montgomery county after his pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer. this happened in worcester township. police have not identified the driver of the pickup truck but we know he died after speeding. we're working to find out how the accident happened and if any charges will be filed. a man is in the hospital after being stabbed. police made an arrest in this case. the stabbing happened in a home on acorn street in montgomery county and it happened around

10:00 last night. we'll find out the victim's condition and information on what led to the stabbing. new from overnight, a driver in northeast philadelphia is now in the hospital after crashing into a peco pole. this happened after 3:00 this morning near the corner of east fisher's lane and ramona avenue. fire crews tell us the crash started a small electrical fire on the scene. no word on the driver's condition. skyforce 10 has launched and it's live over breaking news in the oxford circle section of philadelphia where there's a house fire on elbridge street. as we pull back, you see fi firefighters on top of the building. there was a report of a child inside but we're working to confirm that information. stay with nbc 10 news and the nbc 10 news app for updates on this breaking news. family members of a man shot and killed inside a crowded grocery store say the gunman could be the victim's distant

cousin. the victim, maurice mcdonald, was killed as he waited for an order inside j & r perez grocery in mantua yesterday morning. workers say the gunman just run in and shot him. we spoke with mcdonald's mother who says she's fed up with have this violence. >> i love my son. you know, i know he's in god's hands and i'm just tired of these kids dying for nothing. >> family members say they're not sure if the shooting is the result of an ongoing feud. police are asking anyone with any information to come forward. newcastle county police need your help finding a man they say carjacked a 71-year-old woman. the victim was leaving a wawa on philadelphia pike in claymont when a man walked up to her with a gun. look at the surveillance photo of the suspect. police say he ordered the victim to drive to another wawa about six miles away at dupont highway

and memorial drive. the victim says after she gave the suspect some cash he took off in another vehicle. if you happen to recognize this man, you have to call police. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane will go on trial for leaking grand jury information. yesterday kane appeared before a montgomery county judge. she lost her bid to have some charges thrown out. kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury material to a reporter and then lying about it. her defense lawyer claims kane forgot she signed an oath of secrecy just after taking office. kane will go on trial sometime next year. we are following breaking news from north jersey where rescuers are on the scene of a house explosion there, and details about the deadly blast and the events still unfolding on the scene. and rocking out. brain tumors with the air guitar challenge. this video is quickly going viral. up next, we'll talk to the daily

area. a little drizzle but we're drying out during the afternoon. we have showers returning during the day on thursday and a chilly but dry weekend ahead. it's getting brighter out there. we can see the buildings, at least, compared to yesterday when we couldn't. 60 degrees with cloudy skies. the wind is north/northwest at 16 miles an hour. and the clouds have kept the temperatures are from rising too much but it's still not all that chilly out there. the average shy 58. we're already above that at 60 in philadelphia. allentown never got above the mid-50s yesterday. they're already 58 degrees. in other parts of the area we'll get into the 60s because there will be some sunshine this afternoon. reporting stations, virtually everybody is reporting cloudy skies right now, millville still reporting a very light shower as is mount pocono. you can see a lot of the clouds here. it's going to take a little while before we completely dry

out and then by the time we dry out from that, the next system is going to be approaching. we don't a whole lot of rain with that right now but it will be building up during the day in the middle of the country and that will be affecting us tomorr tomorrow. through the afternoon, temperatures in the 60s just about everywhere including at the shore because we'll probably get a land breeze today and as you can see, not totally overcast all day. we don't get totally clear but a mix of clouds and sun. and then during the night tonight and, again, it's not all that cold. low temperatures down near 50 degrees and tomorrow as a cold front approaching we have some showers moving in. some could come until the morning, especially north and west as you see it's not heavy or widespread, certainly not a flood thread but temperatures

into the 60s during the day and you can see we have some showers from time to time as we go through the day on thursday but then we clear out thursday night and then on friday pretty decent day. got a hurricane in the atlantic now. it's hurricane kate. it's formed into a hurricane farther north the atlantic this late in the season than any other storm on record. it's moving 45 miles an hour toward europe. for today, mix of clouds and some sunshine developing. high temperatures into the mid-60s and the seven-day forecast, well we have showers coming in tomorrow, it won't be an all day rain. and then on friday it's going to be an all day wind and the chill coming in and that sets us up for a pretty chilly and windy day on saturday. well below average temperatures, very cold morning on sunday but

and they did the x-rays and all the things they needed to. do i had to have a brain operation. i had brain cancer and i'm now under treatment from jefferson university hospital and radiation, chemotherapy, and so far so good. >> we'll talk more about that in your treatment but helen, let me turn to you. were you the brain child behind the video? tell me what the response has been after it's gone out. >> the brain child was a woman who contacted me to tell me her story about having three non-cancerous tumors and she started this challenge, the rock out brain tumor air guitar challenge and so as i was writing about her i thought it would be wonderful for us to get into it to raise money and to pay tribute to our editor. >> and gar, tell me what you learned in this process and tell me about your treatment, some information that you learned. >> well, one thing i learned is that it's a daily thing.

you -- after you have the surgery that removes the tumor you then have daily chemo which you take with a pill and daily radiation which they gave in a room that has a big machine with radiation and frankly, i have felt pretty good so far. it's a six-week process. i'm only in the first week. we'll see how it goes the rest of the way but i'm pleased so far and amazed at the wonderful reaction i've gotten from all our employees at the "daily news." i sometimes feel like i don't deserve the kindness and outreach that i've gotten. i was dazzled by this video that came out. it's hilarious, wonderful. >> let's get back to the video helen. we'll provide a link where people can watch. when they do watch, what do you want people to do after they watch it? >> i want people to donate. we're trying to raise money for awareness and get people sort of better knowledge able this and

grandmother. dhs has been called. i asked police if there had been a history of domestic violence at this house or if they've been called here in the past and i was told no. but investigators are still talking to neighbors and we're going to be following this story throughout the day and have an update for you on our evening newscast. live now in mayfair, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, monique. officials are set to hold a news conference at the top of the hour to update the investigation into a deadly plane crash in northeast ohio. a small jet slammed into an akron apartment complex. investigators are expecting number killed to go up. so far, two people are confirmed dead but nine are believed to have been killed when the ten-seater jet crashed outside of this apartment building. a florida real estate company says most were employees and executives of their firm. authorities say the jet clipped a power line before it hit the

brick building yesterday. a witness was recording on her cell phone when she heard the plane crash nearby. >> oh, my god! >> investigators don't think anyone was inside the building. no one on the ground was hurt. a kansas judge sentenced an admitted white supremist to death for the murder of three people at jewish sites in 2014. frazer glen miller, jr., was convicted of one count of capital murder along with three counts of attempted murder. the 74-year-old said he shot and killed his victims because he wanted to kill jewish people before he died of emphysema. all three victims were christians. university of missouri police say they have arrested a suspect accused of making threats against black students and faculty after an anxious night and tumultuous week for the campus. nbc ear sarah dallof has the latest from columbia, missouri. >> reporter: good morning.

campus is operating normally and officials stress there are no active threats, however they have increased security. this follows what was an unsettling night for many students who learned of the threats which were posted on the app yik yak via social media. dorm restricted access, one sorority went on voluntary lockdown and some students opted to pack up and leave campus. police say they have apprehended the person who posted those messages and that that person wasn't on or anywhere near campus when they were written. they're also looking into who phoned in a threat to the black culture center yesterday evening prompting a lockdown there. investigators swept the building and didn't find anything. the campus struggle to get back to normal following a week of upheaval, in columbia, missouri, i'm sarah dallof. back to you. we want to give you a live look at the annual veterans day parade is just under way. a line is packed request cars

there. you can see the classic cars, valley forge military academy color guard led the parade followed by nine high school bands. >> president obama will address -- >> and another live look at arlington national cemetery where president obama is taking part in a ceremony to honor our nation's veterans. this is secretary of veterans affairs robert mcdonald speaking at the podium right now. following tradition he's set to deliver a speech and tribute to those who served. earlier, the president laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldiers. that was followed by a moment of silence. not far from arlington, a memorial was held at the world war ii memorial. bob dole, wounded in that war, was n attendance.

u.s. forces in south korea honored veterans there. a number of south korean war veterans attended the ceremony at the u.s. army base in seoul. the commander of the u.s. forces in south korea hosted that event. the philly pops will perform in honor of vietnam veterans at penn's landing. the vets will be awarded with 50th anniversary commemorative pins. the keynote speaker will be major general wesley craig, former leader of the pennsylvania national guard. ceremonies will start in less than a half hour at noon. veterans day is becoming a learning experience for some local school children. katy zachry shows us how students at one bucks county school got some special visitors. >> reporter: today so many will be spending time at veterans memorials like this one at penn's landing. but leading into today, a local principal wanted her young students to learn a big lesson a different way. ♪ this land is your land, this land is my land ♪ >> reporter: it was a warm

florida is charged after he was caught stealing money from a church collection plate. you can see the man fumbling through the collection plates before just grabbing a wad of that cash and stuffing it into his pants pocket. local authorities set up cameras in the church after officials became suspicion about the collection of donations. he told deputies he was on his way to the altar with donations. negotiations to end a police standoff in arizona taken a unsuspected turn. the suspect demanded coffee and free powdered jelly doughnuts. the manager of the dunkin' donuts around the corner says he was more than happy to oblige. officers chased the man on to a roof after he was suspected of shoplifting and turns out he had a warrant for a parole violation. after he got his tasty treats and coffee the suspect surrendered without incident. doctors say former president jimmy carter is responding well to cancer treatment. yesterday doctors said they found no evidence of any tumors
