bike in burlington county yesterday. police telling us the victim was walking along the turnpike when a car hit him and kept going. a traffic camera recorded the aftermath of the emergency vehicle on left side of the screen. this is in mt. laurel. victim, a man named michael, suffered from dementia, wandered away from a nearby hotel. police still looking for the driver who hit him. >> new video of the man wanted for questioning in a violent home invasion in gloucester. we see him walking into a wawa. the legs of his pants are soaked, because police just chased him through a swamp. one of two men wanted for the home invasion earlier in the night. pair tied up, beat and robbed a man inside his franklin township him. the victim needed surgery. call police if you know anything about the crime. this is happening now. crews working to make repairs to a water main break in north

philadelphia. it's left a mess for people who live here. live look along van kirk street where it happened before noon time. you see the equipment. sky force overhead after the line broke. you can see water all over the place. 70 homes without water. the water department's a frequent visitor in recent weeks. >> two weeks ago, out to fix water main further up in the beginning of the block. there was a leak here that they had to fix. they've been out two or three different times in the last month. >> water department hopes to have everyone back online some time tone but it's not clear when the road might reopen. philadelphia police still don't know who shot whom this morning in a house on mershown. they weren't sure if they were sheeting at each other or a murder/suici murder/suicide. >> it didn't sound like a

gunshot. but i heard a pop, yell, i have my window open, sounded like out back, but it was in the house. >> two young children in the house were not harmed. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with a mystery at a montgomery county cemetery. police believe the same man is vandalizing the same grave over and over but they cannot find him or figure out why. nbc 10's deanna durante live. someone's going to a lot of trouble here. >> reporter: they have. and now, so have investigators who now have surveillance images of the man they believe has come to this grave five times since spring of 2014. each time they say this man has done things to try to deface this one cemetery marker. >> crazy never heard anything like it in my life. >> reporter: those visiting here in st. matthew's here, the crime is shocking. >> they want it to stop.

>> reporter: family members first saw damage if 2014. somebody spray painted john, the picture taken by police march 23rd. then this picture, april 29th of 2014. red paint. >> we've worked with the family, they're distraught about the vandalism. unique case to the extent the suspect, person of interest, keeps coming back and putting the same vandalism. >> reporter: police have image. the same guy who came back here on december 8th, 2014. poured black tar on the stone. he came back again may 18th, 2015. >> this gentleman, i lightly call him gentleman, he steals the light off of the wall. >> reporter: and police say that same guy returned last week, spraying black pain over the family name. police say that man has tried to deface and take off this light here. this is one that the family had installed here, motion light, to light up the area when someone

would show up at night. the crimes, according to police, happening do ining during the d know anything, call police. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. it's changing of the guard in philadelphia. the city's new mayor has announced his choice to lead the police department. nbc 10's george spencer spoke with the new police commissioner today. richard ross comes from within the philadelphia police department. i imagine he has so much going through his head as he take over top job and overwhelming importance of it. >> he's a longtime insider. described policing as proud profession and noble profession. as police departments nationwide face challenges, ross said his task will be to build on successes of outgoing commissioner. >> this has been kind of a badly kept secret. >> reporter: mayor elect jim

kenney admitted his choice for commissioner is little surprise. richard ross, on the force since 1989, recently number two in the department, will be elevated to the top spot. he'll fill the post being vacated by his mentor, current commissioner charles ramsey. >> this is more about passing the baton. this is things that we've done successfully. we've had modicum of success with and it's not about reinventing the wheel, it's about building upon it. >> reporter: it's a trying time for law enforcement nationwide with police officer hiring down significantly. locals hope for the best as a new chapter begins. >> i think a change of guard is good, bringing new thoughts, new ideas. >> they need to have more program for the police officer, for their behavior. >> reporter: keep an eye on the officers? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: there will be changes. ross and kenney support body

veterans day. >> chief meteorology glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here. a lot of veteran day events, fortunately stayed dry. >> the day in between yesterday's rainy day and tomorrow's showers, pretty good timing there. we had a lot of clouds around, still do. pocono mountains, it cloudy. but it not raining. as you can see this is the clouds and radar. you don't see anything on radar. seeing clouds breaking up a bit. we have to go far out to the west to see the next area of rain. that's in arkansas and missouri. this area will increase quite a bit over the next 24 hours and then some of that head this way to give us the showers tomorrow. 63 degrees, well above average high of 58. even 62 in allentown which is even farther above their average. as we go through the next several hours, temperatures, not going down a lot. part of the reason cloud cover,

>> ftsb says expects to stay in ohio for the next four to five days to continue the investigation. a crash in montgomery county kills a driver of a pickup truck after it collided with a tractor-trailer. it happened at intersection of valley forge and potshot roads. a man accused of carjacking and kidnapping a 71-year-old woman is behind bars tonight. but his accomplice still on the loose. norris farlow taken into custody last night. surveillance video of him on the left, his mugshot on the right. victim was leaving the whawa, h approached her, ordered her to drive to another wawa at memorial drive. after she gave the suspect cash she took off in another vehicle. police say farlow did not act alone. detectives searching for john johnson. if you know where he is, call

police. today we remember and thank all of those who have served in the armed forces. president obama presided over veteran day ceremonies at arlington national cemetery. he's not satisfied with improvements to health care for vets. >> if you keep investing in facilities and positions and staff to make sure our veterans >> the president also laid traditional wreath at the tomb of the unknowns. here at home, mayor michael nutter and other leaders laid a wreath at philadelphia's tomb of the unknown soldiers in washington square. the tomb here horning thousands who died during the american revolutionary war. bucks county officials honored veterans. they gathered at veterans wall. the wall pays tribute to district alumni, faculty, staff who have served in the military.

additional veteran names were add to the wall this year. tens of thousands of veterans spending this day on the streets. pennsylvania senator bob casey met with a group of homeless vets this morning in north philadelphia help also helped serve up a free breakfast. >> a lot of these guys, men and women here, who served their country, came back, and then had a difficult time. this place like this allows them to begin to get back on their feet. >> today's breakfast held at impact hancock manor, help over 300 vets a year find home and jobs. philadelphia has made great strides in fight against veteran homelessness. we'll take a closer look how they have done this. hear one veteran's success story. it's his third dui arrest, but a high-ranking lehigh county lawmaker accepted in a program for first-time offenders.

senate senator pat browne's arrest came in may. he was eligible for the first time rehabilitation program because his last arrest before that was 16 years ago. browne told the judge he had been battling a drinking problem. quote, i'm currently being very proactive in my recovery activities. i have something that no one would choose to have. this experience will make me stronger a better legislator. a university of missouri student behind bars after he made online threats against black students. hunter park is accused of posting a threat on anumbonymou app called yik yak. some students chose to stay elser. >> i heard people are like shoot all black people tomorrow. who knows if any of it is real. i don't want to be here in case it is real and stuff goes down. >> threat comes days after the university president resigns

after student protests over racial injustices. decision 2016. republicans running for president in iowa and new hampshire today, after last night's debate. >> nbc 10 national correspondent steve handelsman has reaction to sharp differences that emerged from the candidates. >> ben carson charging he's being asked unfairly about inconsistencies to his life story, because, because he's a fundamentalist christian. that was not carson's big problem last night. specificity was or the lack of it. carson did not detail his exact economic plan in the debate hosted by fox business network. the more seasoned candidates like ted cruz, eager to detail. donald trump was not specific. trump claims he was, claims he got the biggest applause when he vowed to build a wall to keep out undocumented immigrants. jeb bush took on trump over that, winning applause, marco

rubio, mostly dodged the immigration issue, took on trump today saying, we cannot deport 11 million people. rubio got one of the biggest da plauss of the night for taking on tramp and rand paul over diminishing role of the u.s. military overseas. what any of this might do the race, polls, is unanswered tonight. steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. >> now you, nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, a lot of clouds around today. aside from sprinkles this morning, it's been dry. not going to stay that way for long. we've got rain returning during the day tomorrow. then, colder winds coming in. it's going to be windy for a couple of days. and that's going to lead to a chilly weekend. but a dry weekend. we're seeing a little bit of sunshine out there now. certainly visibility's good. 63, wind is 13 miles an hour.

we've seen gusts up to 25 25 miles an hour in the past hour. we're in the upper 50s to low 60s now. continue to see temperatures run above average, average high is 58 for this time of the year. even with the cloud cover, we've been able to get above that. wind is coming out of the northwest, dry wind direction. averaging 10 to 20 miles an hour. it's been on the breezy side today. but nothing compared to the way the wind is going to be friday. windy day. clouds around. but it's been dry for much of the day. we have to go far back to the west to find the next area of rain. arkansas, missouri, clouds building in the ohio valley, storms have not developed yet. they will, that's part of what's coming this way. big storm in the middle of the country, snow on the cold side. severe weather on the warm side. that's going up toward the great lakes. it's not going to be bothering us.

the futurecast go into tomorrow, yeah, it's going to be cloudy to start off with. here co comes showers, even in morning hours. cold front comes through. might see sunshine late in the day. and then here comes the wind. cold winds come in from the northwest. probably gusting over 30 miles an hour friday. on saturday, we have winds comes in. so we're seeing temperatures going below average. and that will also be the case, eagles game, it will be on the chilly side, especially because of wind. 10, 20 miles an hour or so. but getting up to 58 degrees. looks like it's going to be sunny. really nice day for football. clouds with fog developing late tonight. 49 for the low in philadelphia. 46 north and west. average low by the way 41. we're not nearly as cold as average november day. cloudy, with showers during the day tomorrow.

most of the showers should occur between about 9:00 a.m. and noon. so don't think they're going to be affecting morning rush and i don't think affecting afternoon rush. in between. and we could start to dry out late in the day with temperatures getting into the 60s again. then friday we're going to have windy conditions. probably 15 to 25-mile-an-hour-winds gusting to 35 miles an hour. temperature down a bit as well. look at the low temperatures over the weekend. only in the 30s. that's in philadelphia. even colder in the suburbs. high of 51 saturday with the wind. that's going to be a chilly day. for the eagles, as you saw, sunshine, 58. and it gets warmer next week. we start getting back toward upper 60s. >> all right. pre-thanksgiving tradition in delaware, stuff the bus food

staffers decided to make the video after learning the assistant managing editor has brain cancer. brainchild was a woman who contacted me to tell me her story about having three noncancerous tumors and had this challenge. >> joseph has seen the video and think is it's hilarious. anyone who watches is asked to donate. >> co-workers having fun for a great cause. >> raising good money in the process? zblu individu . >> new video of a big bird creating problems. >> now a new effort to take care of the problem. nbc 10 viewer gave us this video of the emu today. the bird's been on the loose in the town's end area for months, caused a school to go into lockdown monday. animal's become a public safety issue, so much so the department of agriculture asked police and game warden to euthanize the bird, if they company police say

model. >> reporter: an outreach specialist at vmc, taking care of those whose shoes he was once in. ♪ on this veterans day, entertainment, warm meal are welcome here. this is the work year round at center that seems to make the difference for men and women, specifically efforts to find them homes. >> reaching functional heroes, all veteran homelessness in philadelphia will be rare, brief, nonreoccurring. >> reporter: director of development, explains vmc's part of a coalition of federal and local agencies that have made it their in addition to end veteran homelessness this year. >> huge success. since 2013, when we first started, we have housed 1300 plus veterans and families. >> reporter: one of them, delvin. >> it changed my life, gave me a reason to look forward to life again. >> in terms of partnership and

resources, hud, v.a., city of philadelphia, office of supportive housing, even the governor's office in pennsylvania joined a movement to support initiative to end homelessness. a true collaboration. >> great to see that one success story. so many problems veterans face. the city feels that homelessness is functionally zero. explain that. >> they've been able to find housing for just about 1300 homeless vets and families, which is great. still some people who choose not to come off the streets. they don't want to be in the shelter system or temporary house organize even permanent housing. that's what they mean by functional zero. what they do know, in terms of the city and its office of supportive housing, they know everybody's names. anybody out on the streets, know their names, know where they can fine them, reach out to them. >> making progress. take a look at numbers. a closer look how veteran homelessness has changed from 2010 to 2014.

number of homeless veterans dropped 33%, amounts to 50,000 on any night. administration says one of the biggest factors in veteran homelessness is mental illness and posttraumatic stress disorder. this problem has become troubling for veterans who served in war since 9/11. reason study from the v.a. shows veterans deployed in twars had 30% higher rate of homelessness. the city still has a major issue with youth homelessness. the nbc 10 digital team spent two months investigating that issue and found young people who are being shut out from getting services they need because of their age. you can see faces of homeless youth right now on the nbc 10 app and nbc10.com. >> now, you're nbc 10 first alert weather. >> a lot of clouds around today. nothing like the raun we saw yesterday or rain we'll be seeing tomorrow.

update on a story we've been following this morning. minutes ago, police confirmed a an attempted murder/suicide. a man in a house shot a woman in the neck, then shot himself help is not expected to survive but police tell us the woman is in stable condition, which is fortunate considering where she was shot. a jar of peanut butter could become the go-to tool for diagnosis alzheimer's disease. >> sounds strange. some doctors say the test for memory robbing condition, they're going to test for by asking patients to take a whiff of peanut butter, held a foot from their nose. studies find people who can't smell the spread until it's closer likely have the disease. loss of smell is often the first sign of dementia. >> it's not intrusive. it doesn't mean going in front of a doctor and a bunch of

warnings in iowa right now. temperatures tonight, not dropping a lot. clouds breaking up a little bit. but then clouds thicken back up as we head toward daybreak. that's not going to allow the temperature to drop much. that's way above average for low temperatures. here come showers. generally after the morning rush tomorrow, let's say 10:00 or so, going into the western suburbs, and move through the area toward the midday hours. and then later in the day, things start to i dry out a bit. if you get sunshine late in date we could see temperatures jump up to the mid-60s. it's not going to be as wet as yesterday. friday, clear skies now, friday morning is going to be a little bit cooler and we don't really warm up a whole lot for friday afternoon. now, as we go through the weekend, like i said, cold,

windy on friday and saturday. not quite as windy on sunday for the eagles game. but it's pretty good football weather out there with a lot of sunshine and not too windy. clouds and fog late tonight. 4 t 49 for the low in philadelphia. tomorrow above average temperatures despite cloudy skies and showers. and we could see mid-60s, if we get sunshine late in the day. we're not going to get that warm on friday. it's going to be windy, gusts over 30 miles an hour. windy day an saturday. colder. we've got temperatures in the 30s overnight. pretty good weather for the eagles on sunday. then we start to warm up. as we go into next week, back up into the mid 60s monday and tuesday. and maybe even upper 60s as we go into next wednesday. we've enjoyed warmer temperatures lately.
