isis there is accountability. his voice is infamous. holding a knife in horrific hostage videos. jihadi john, mohammed emwazi, was the front man for a string of isis killings. thousand reports not yet confirmed by the pentagon says he has been killed by u.s. drone overnight, a senior u.s. official confirmed the strike. on twitter an activist group from the isis stronghold reported the death of jihadi john. his high profile victims including american journalists. steven's mother says she's waiting for news. if the got him, great. but it didn't bring my son back. peter cassie was another victim. kuwait born emwazi was a computer science graduate turned gang member seen here wearing a pittsburgh pirates cap.

the team called that sickening. three hostages described him as sadist sadistic, one of four british isis guards they called him beatles. an early recruit to isis, the jihadist group whose reach sears from syria to north africa. the strike targeting jihadi john comes shortly after the latest attack in lebanon. jihadi john's family all live here in london. the british prime minister just spoke calling jihadi john the isis lead executioner and saying if he has been killed by the u.s., it was an act of self-defense. >> all right. keir simmons with the breaking news. we want to bring in jeremy barb fr oig from the defense department. we know jihad itdy john is the

face of brutally. is this symbolic or something more? >> this is the biggest blow to isis in the year and a half that we've been undertaking operations against them. he was the face. he was the chief propagandist. but i think he also was an operational commander. he led this hostage taking cell and he himself conducted these murderous operations for the entire world to see. so i think that it is a very significant takedown today. >> the reports are that he was traveling in a car, he was hit by a drone strike. so what does that tell us about our increasing intelligence on the ground when it comes to isis? >> well, these are painstaking operations, they require days and months of operations pulling on all of our sources to pinpoint a terrorist location. we've gotten very good at these operations. so win we reach deep into enemy territory into syria which has air defenses and we put lead right on that target, you know

our intel sgeps ligence is pris. >> and we're hearing from u.s. officials that they're confident he has been hit, but how do they go about making sure that yes, indeed, he was not only the target but that the target was accomplished? >> right after the strike, our people will basically go quiet and listen and will watch and will hear what they will say about their own guys, whether they're saying that he's gone and over the coming hours and days, we'll able to definitively confirm whether he's been taken off the battlefield. and i actually believe he has. >> real quickly, you mentioned he's the chief propagandist for isis. is it possible his death serves as a recruiting tool for others? >> we've asked ourselves that question many times and i think we've determined that it's better to take these guys off the battlefield than to let them stay out there and recruit others to their jihad. >> jeremy bash, former from the

immigrants, president obama responded on abc news. >> imagine the images on the screen flashed around the world as we were dragging parents away from their children. but more importantly that's not who we are as americans. >> reporter: he meanwhile ben carson is facing questions for defending his best friend, a convicted felon. this oral surgeon 34r50eded guilty to insurance fraud nearly a decade ago before carson petitioned a federal judge for lean generals city citing his honesty and integrity. the judge gave him probation. but in carson's 2013 book, the neurosurgeon calls for a saudi arabian solution for medical fraud, not the chopping off people's limbs, but no less than ten years in prison and loss of all one's personal possessions. in a statement, ben carson says i always and will continue to stand by him. that's what real friends do.

sincere and it is insulting but not surprising that republicans would attack her for this, too. all of this will be at the fore when the candidates take the stage here tomorrow night. savannah. >> kristen welker, thank you. and now we have this, the secret service dealing with fallout from yet another scandal this morning. a uniformed officer is accused of sending explicit photos and texts while on duty at the white house to someone he thought was an underage girl. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has the latest on this. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning. these charges were filed against a member of the secret service uniform division specifically an officer assigned to check the i.d.s of people with appointments to visit the white house. prosecutors say the officer worked in one of these booths on the white house grounds where visitors with appointments check into be admitted. investigators say the officer, 37-year-old lee robert moore of churchill, maryland, began sending sexually explicit sex messages in august to someone he

thought was a 14-year-old girl, but who was actually an undercover officer for the delaware state police. according to court documents, in one message, moore said he was, quote, sitting at box office style booth checking i.d.s for entrance into a building. the documents say he also sent a sexually explicit photo of himself to the person he thought was 14. he was relieved of tut last wdu week and put on leave. after he was arrested, prosecutors say he admitted sending the messages and photos and he said some from his white house duty post. another headache for the reesely appointed secret service director joseph clancy who has vowed to change the agency's culture. such as failing to stop a fence jumper with a knife a year ago. >> we're trying to reinvigorate the look of the secret service and unfortunately, i don't have a magic wand. it will take a little bit of time. >> reporter: in general, another member of the uniform division screening bags at a washington event attended by the first lady

was placed on leave after he was accused of sending a suggestive picture to a woman he met there. no comment from moore. he's appearing in delaware state court this morning to face the charges. secret service officials say they learned of this a week ago, suspended him and ended his access to all their facilities. >> pete, thank you very much. surprising news from the pentagon this morning, defense secretary ash carter has suddenly fired his top military aide after allegations of misconduct. >> officials aren't saying why army lieutenant ron lewis was removed from his job. in a statement defense secretary carter said i expect the highest possible standards of conduct from the men and women in this department particularly from those serving in the most senior positions. lewis has been temporarily assigned to another office pending the outcome of an investigation. in other news this morning, president obama be stowed the nation's highest military honor on a young army captain in an extremely moving ceremony at the white house on thursday. >> captain florent groberg

the country. by the way the penalty is 20 years in prison. and a quarter million dollar fine. and yet so far this year laser strikes up a stunning 36% as of mid october. and the number is still growing. overnight reports of more laser strikes across the country. in pomona, california just outside of los angeles, a pilot from station ktla was covering a story when a bright green beam of light pierced his eyes for at least 45 seconds causing them to burn. >> it hit direct in my face causing a discomfort in my eyes and what we call flash blindness. similar to having flashbulbs go off in your eyes. >> reporter: the news crew tracked the source to a home in the same neighborhood where a 15-year-old boy was arrested for pointing a laser at an aircraft, later released to the custody of his parents. >> he doesn't know. he's a 15-year-old little boy. >> reporter: in phoenix, lasers struck two commercial planes while they were making their

descent. >> be advised of green laser activity about 2.a 5 mills southwest of sky harbor. >> 671, 1:00 position a green laser. >> reporter: the latest rounds of strikes coming just one day after an incident in new york city when a chopper pilot for our nbc station w thnbc was hit with a laser over brooklyn. a 20-year-old man caught on camera flashing the laser was arrested and charged with two counts of reckless endangerment. according to the faa, more than 20 aircraft was struck with lasers from the ground on wednesday night alone. and the number of attacks is growing. as of mid october, more than 5300 strikes it will reathis yed to 3900 last year. we've seen these strikes at nearly every, but the most include los angeles, phoenix, houston, las vegas, dfw and san

spectrum disorder. >> let's shift gears. there is a fascinating story in the newspaper about the cleveland clinic starting to -- wanting to get into the business of uterine transplants. who would this be for and how would they do it? >> the patient that this is for is for a woman who has something called uterine factor infertility. and that means that there are women, thousands across the world, who are actually born without a uterus or have some issue whether a his ter rec any or problem with their uterus and they can't carry a child. the cleveland clinic pacing out of has come out of sweden, they have had nine uterine transplants. it's quite a procedure. the woman has to be screened significantly, they have to go through ibf, they have to be selected to be the recipient of a donor uterus, meaning that a person has died, they place the uterus in the woman's body. woman has to heal, a year later they do ibf, importantly the

taking a look at the headlines, a new government survey suggests that one in 45 american children age 3 and older have autism. that's a significant increase from the earlier estimates of one in 68 children. but experts point out the previous number came from a check of medical numbers. the new higher number is the result of surveys that asked parents specifically if their child had ever received a diagnosis of autism. autism speaks says this is another piece of evidence that suggests autism is being underreported. if you're looking to get a flu vaccine but want to get it in the mist form, you may be out of luck. pharmacists are reporting that they are out of flu mist. a company spokeswoman says it
