plus, eagles' player lane johnson goes off-on fans. why he's blaming them for taking away the home field advantage. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. >> a state trooper shot on the vine street expressway. just minutes ago police will charge their 17-year-old suspect as an adult. this video just in to our newsroom. officers transporting him from state police barracks to southwest detectives. >> tonight live coverage from the shootout to the suspect to the officer now being call adhero. we begin with denise nakano. >> he is here to be arraigned. a group of officers standing behind me are waiting for his arrival. meantime, state police have questioned a 19-year-old let him go. late tonight they questioned a 17-year-old and let him go after being interviewed. a high-speed chase, shoot out

and fiery crash on the vine street expressway ended with pa state trooper patrick casey on the mend with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. the 17-year-old alleged gunman is expected to be charged as an adult with attempted murder. the teen suspect's father spoke out. >> he's hurt. he's hurt. >> reporter: as his son left p.a. state police barracks to be checked output. >> i have to be there for my son. >> reporter: it all started around 9:00 this morning when police pulled over a car for expired registration. as three people got out of the car, the suspected gunman got behind the wheel and sped off. trooper casey pulled up alongside him at broad and when the teen left from the car and opened fire on trooper casey, he fired back. you can see damage to trooper casey's patrol car as he shot through the windshield trying to defend himself. >> the shooter was shooting from his moving car at his trooper

that was driving. after he struck our trooper's car, he lost control, hit the jersey barrier and went into the back of the bus. >> reporter: a witness shot the video of the bus in flames. >> the flames just started getting and bigger and started hearing, boom. >> reporter: the bus driver was not hurt and surprisingly no one else was either, other than the trooper, despite a wild chase and shots fired on the vine street expressway as cars pass by. and, again, a 17-year-old late tonight was questioned and then promptly released. police are still looking to talk to one more person. the alleged gunman on his way here to southwest detectives should be arriving in just a few minutes and will be arraigned overnight. i'm denise nakano, nbc 10 news. tonight, trooper patrick casey is being hailed a hero. the police department says he's an officer who took on gunfire to protect people on the highway. >> andrea klein thomas is live

where the trooper is recovering tonight. an dreanudrea. >> trooper casey is in stable condition and alert. his family and colleagues have spent the entire day by his side. trooper patrick casey is simply lucky to be alive. >> still has a bullet in his shoulder, that is likely to stay there and will be removed at a later time. >> reporter: a high-speed chase and subsequent shootout along the vine expressway this morning could have ended far worse. the 31-year-old trooper returned fire through his windshield. state police say dash cam video captured the whole incident. >> he did a terrific job. very heroic. i watched the video and he was spot on in everything he did. >> reporter: all-day political leaders and law enforcement arrived that hospital to check on the wounded officer. >> he asked me how i was doing. i said, well, that's really not the question right now. the question is, how are you doing? >> his good spirits provided relief. >> he's a real hero that he was

shot and then returned fire and tried to save the streets. >> reporter: this incident is a reminder of how a seemingly routine stop can immediately become dangerous. and trooper casey has been a trooper for six years. we're told he will be here at the hospital until at least tomorrow morning. reporting live, i'm aundrea cline-thomas. nbc 10 news. the shooting and crash shut down the vine street expressway for hours affecting traffic patterns. look at that backup. sky force 10 capture it near the end of the morning rush, frustrated drivers with no where to turn as traffic just inched along and the ripple effect spread from river to river impacting i-76 and much more. tonight, this video is drawing headlines and condemination. it shows a chicago police officer shooting and killing a teenager. and we have to warn you what you are about to see is graphic. >> so graphic, in fact, that the

teenager's family is concerned it could lead to more violence on chicago streets. nbc 10 national correspondent reports. >> reporter: the dash cam video from october of last year shows police responding to a call of a suspect armed with a knife and then, according to the prosecutor, officers jason vandyke opened fire, fatally shooting 17-year-old laquan mcdonald 16 times. >> the officer in this case took a young man's life and he's going to have to account for his actions. and that's what today is all about. today is about accountability. >> reporter: just a few hours before the video was released, officer jason vandyke turned himself into authorities. he's charged with first degree murder. >> this defendant's actions of shooting laquan mcdonald were not justified and they were not a proper use of deadly force by this police officer. >> reporter: the coroner's report shows that at least two

of mcdonald's wounds were in the back but the attorney for officer vandyke said his client feared for his life. >> it's truly not a murder case and we feel that we're going to be very successful in defending this case. >> reporter: the city of chicago braced for protests while the mayor and laquan mcdonald's family appealed to the city to remain peaceful. >> i would like to echo the comments of the mcdonald family. they've asked for calm. >> reporter: just hours after the video was released, protesters marched through the streets of chicago, some blocking traffic. nbc news. new at 11:00, a man is in critical condition tonight after he was shot by police in camden. sky force 10 above the scene on rutledge walk shortly after 7:00 tonight. the prosecutor's office said officers were responding to a domestic disturbance when a man fired one shot at them. the shooting is under investigation. new arrests tonight in the wake of a shooting near a rally in minneapolis last night.

three people are now in custody after witnesses said white supremsis fired shots at a group of protesters. five people were hit, but they are expected to be okay. the rally was protesting the deadly police shooting of jamar clark earlier this month. a scary scene in chester township tonight. sky force 10 was there moments after the impact between a tractor trailer and a freight train. you can see the truck tossed on to its side. the road was temporarily shut down and despite these images, we can tell you the driver of that big rig remarkably suffered just minor injuries. no one on the train crew was hurt. well, are you heading out for thanksgiving? tomorrow is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year. aaa says more than half a million people in our area will travel 50 miles or more for the holiday. for those of you heading out of town, expect plenty of company. almost 90% of holiday travelers get to grandma's by car. that's thanks in part to the lowest gas prices in half a decade. air travel has been on the

decline in the lead up to the thanksgiving holiday. less than 10% of turkey day travelers are choosing to fly. officials say it may be because people are spreading their travel plans throughout the week. amtrak is bracing for packed trains tomorrow to handle the holiday crush. amtrak's adding more trains as well as more seats to existing trains. last year, amtrak said all aboard to more than 770,000 paernlthss over the thanksgiving travel period. as we look at live 30th street station, the big question. what kind of weather can we expect for the get away? >> first alert meteorologist sheena parveen has our forecast. >> tomorrow is quiet depending on where you are. looking pretty good wednesday morning, especially the eastern half of the country. snow over the rockies, scattered showers in parts of texas. as we go through the day wednesday, you see it is fairly quiet, especially through much of the northeast up into new england by tomorrow night. good travel weather. this extends all the way into the southeast.

pretty quiet travel weather there, too. but now watch what happens right over the central plains nup to the midwest as we go into thursday, thanksgiving. we have a thanksgiving day storm that will be developing. so, if you're traveling anywhere from, i would say texas up towards parts of minneapolis or chicago thanksgiving day, you can expect travel delays. stormy weather close to texas off to kansas city, icy conditions farther north of that. even snow here near minneapolis and some storms approaching chicago by dinnertime thursday. good news for us, we still have good weather in the forecast for your thanksgiving day. coming up, though, we're looking at warmer temperatures near record highs. i'll show you that forecast, as well as your black friday shopping forecast coming up. tonight, the blame game continues between russia and turkey. this after turkey confirms it downed a russian fighter jet near syria, killing a pilot and the marine dispatched to save him. nato held an emergency meeting at turkey's request after it happened. turkey claimed the plane

violated turkish air space and ignored repeated warnings. russia denied crossing the syrian border into turkey and with that, president vladimir putin calling it a stab in the back. president obama met with french president hollande in washington, d.c., to better coordinate the fights against isis. he called the attacks on paris an attack on the world. but both leaders resisted the call to send ground troops to syria. instead calling for a political solution. president hollane will meet with the leaders of russia and germany later this week where he will ask for their support. still no budget in pennsylvania, but lawmakers may be closer to settling their differences. senate republicans called off a vote tonight to override governor wolf's veto of a short-term spending bill. instead, state lawmakers say they're planning on working through the holiday weekend to get a budget plan in place by early next week. pennsylvania has been operating without a budget since june

30th. tomorrow a state senate panel looking into embattled pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane. the state supreme court suspended kane's law license after she was charged with allegedly leaking secret grand jury information. the panel has been looking into whether that suspension affects her ability to do her job. an arrest warrant has been issued for a man accused of burning a new jersey woman to death in massachusetts. fernando owens is wanted for the murder of 29-year-old ashley bortner. he burned her and lit her on fire and left her on the commuter rail tracks earlier this month. she moved to massachusetts a few years ago. a baby lying in a manger. but this wasn't bethlehem. it was new york. tonight, the discovery that has some people calling it an early christmas miracle.

the child of jesus catholic church today. the worker said he found the baby in the manger of the church's nativity scene. emts checked that baby out and he appeared to be healthy. church members say surveillance cameras caught a woman entering the church about 20 minutes before the newborn was found. >> the child, we believe, was a gift almost to this parish. >> social services is looking for a home for that newborn. but after hearing his incredible story, he's already got parish members volunteering to be his new parents. look at this. sky force 10 above penn's landing tonight to give you a sneak peek of the river fest before it opens for the season, taking a spin on the ice at the preview party and this year expect some new additions, including a little village. the rink officially opens

friday. is it cold enough for that kind of ice coming up in the next few days? i guess so. >> one person who knows. sheena. >> funny about friday. some areas could hit record high temperatures. so, it is going to be unseasonably warm friday but at least it looks dry. we don't want rain when there's ice. but the remember waing trend has begun today. little bit warmer than yesterday and we keep this going as we go through thanksgiving day and that's going to lead us to thanksgiving travel. there are some areas across the country where i do expect travel delays for thanksgiving day. i'll show you that in a second. we're also, again, talking about the waurm. as we go into friday, some possible near record highs. take a look at what the temperatures are going to do as we get closer to midnight. bottoming out close to sunrise. right around freezing for the philadelphia area and then temperatures start to go up. by noon tomorrow around 50 degrees. topping out in about the low 50s. today we were only at 50 degrees. tomorrow we should be around 52. average high is 53 and then look at the jump to thanksgiving day.

62 degrees and friday, 67 degrees. it's going to be unseasonably warm. that is very warm for this time of the year, but at least we'll be nice and dry. locally we're nice and dry from the clouds. clearing out. this will be leading to a colder night. here's a look at future weather as we go into your wednesday. if you're going to be traveling tomorrow, it looks nice and clear all the way up to new york. actually, all the way up to maine and even down through the southeast. then we go into thursday, thanksgiving day. some clouds start to move in. the model has been suggesting maybe some sprinkles, but, overall, it is a warmer day. now, we look across much of the middle of the country for thanksgiving afternoon. from chicago, minneapolis, all the way down to parts of texas and denver. expect travel delays. big storm system developing in the middle of the country with rain, ice and snow. we won't be seeing that thanksgiving day. in fact, we're not even going to see it friday, but some of that rain is going to start to get closer even though it will be warming up. as we go into the weekend, we will have a chance at least for a couple showers come saturday. now, if you're traveling across

95 south towards baltimore or d.c., looking mostly sunny. pretty dry wednesday and thursday or if you're heading north. new york or boston, it does look dry for both wednesday and thursday. temperatures on the cooler side. black friday shopping looks pretty good, too. again, we will be warming up in the morning hours and going to be chilly in about the mid to low 50s. but much milder by noon. you probably won't need that jacket by then, temperatures in the low 60s. tonight close to freezing in philadelphia. 23 for allentown by tomorrow morning 25 degrees for millville. tomorrow little bit warmer than today. still a sunny and cool day and then we get the big warmup thanksgiving day. 62 degrees and 67 as we go into friday and finally start to cool down saturday. temperatures dropping through the day to around 49 degrees. cool sunday, still 53, but overall, it's a pretty good-looking forecast. sky force 10 over breaking news just minutes ago. a manhole fire on arch street in

old city. in this video, you can see that glow of the flames from the manhole. we can tell you the fire is now out. we are told about 700 people were are left without power. this is considered to be an electrical fire. we don't yet know how long it will take for power to be restored in that area. a manhole fire affecting arch street. is the eagles' effort an issue? one former bird addresses that. plus, who is going to be under center thursday in detroit. that story and more when we return.

final look at weather. >> nice day tomorrow. still cold in the morning. you'll want a jacket when you walk outside. couple degrees warmer than today. 52 for the high temperature and look at thanksgiving day. this is good travel weather, too, for the entire northeast. up into new england and down into the southeast and now thursday thanksgiving day 62 degrees. the average high 53. much warmer, even warmer for black friday shoppers. but in the middle of the country, we'll be watching a storm system come thursday.
