it was a chance to give thanks and give back. good evening and happy thanksgiving. i'm jacqueline london. as you're enjoying your family and friends on this holiday, nbc 10's drew smith shows us how charity and tradition came together around the region. >> reporter: a cheer of thanks for the men and women in uniform celebrating thanksgiving with dozens of supporters and veterans aboard the battleship new jersey. >> brings a tear to my eye, so full of emotion, it's amazing what it brings out of you. >> reporter: they also took time to think about those serving halfway across the world, away from their families today. >> that brings home something to be truly thankful for. >> reporter: inside the ymca in north philly, the alpha phi alpha fraternity fed and gave clothes to the needy. >> love what they are doing, make my spirits lifted up real high. >> reporter: these people in line are volunteers. this year they wanted it less like a soup kitchen so they had

table service taking people's orders and delivering plates. >> each one of these people has a story that we don't know. we're very, very well aware it could be any one of us on a given day. >> reporter: one thing that really made a big difference this thanksgiving is the great weather, leading to a big turnout at this west philly block party. >> beautiful out here. >> reporter: barbara devin closed her restaurant and brought the food out into the street, feeding anyone who showed up. >> we just do it from the heart. i'm a very giving person and i like to cook and we just like to make people happy. >> reporter: full hearts and full stomachs on a picture perfect thanksgiving. drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> everybody loves a parade, as a lot of people came out to see the oldest thanksgiving parade in the country. ♪ nbc 10 along the ben franklin

parkway for the dunkin' donuts thanksgiving day parade. a true philadelphia tradition as massive balloons and floats made their way down a crowded parade path. the kids had great seats and were bundled up for the parade now in its 95th year. a lot of people decided to spend thanksgiving outside. with this weather it makes perfect sense. sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s. shoppers filled the christmas village today. and what a difference from last thanksgiving. take a look at our weather on this same day last year. these shoppers in hafrtown had to dodge sleet and rain. thankfully, none of that this year. sheena, we are so thankful for the weather we had today. >> yeah, jacqueline, especially because it was warmer, so you probably did not need your heavy coat and really probably didn't need your coat for long. nice and dry across the area, perfect travel weather. not even locally, but all the way up into new england, down into the southeast, but the big story where we are having travel

problems extends from texas up to chicago with snow and ice on the backside of this system. so the middle of the country, that's where we're seeing some problems locally. we still have nice weather for tonight, 56 degrees in philadelphia, 50 degrees in allentown, 49 in millville, so it is still pretty mild outside. now as we go through the rest of this evening, if you'll be heading out and even if you're going to be heading out for black friday shopping tonight, temperatures will slowly and steadily be dropping. mid 40s as we get closer to midnight, then early tomorrow morning if you're brave enough to go shopping by 8:00 temperatures around 47 degrees. coming up we'll take a look at a much warmer forecast for your black friday and a chance of rain over the weekend. tonight, police are asking for help identifying a man who killed a convenience store clerk. police were called to the quick n go around 8:30 last night. that's in burlington county. this is the man police are looking for. when police got to the store on dr. martin luther king boulevard, the 32-year-old store

employee had been shot several times. he was lying in the street and died an hour later at the hospital. now to a developing story at the white house. check out these photos. a man wearing an american flag jumped the white house fence this afternoon. while the first family was inside. he was quickly arrested. the man was also carrying a manila folder, but police haven't given any other information about who he is or why he might have done this. and take a look at this, a blimp that was supposed to fly over the macy's thanksgiving day parade didn't quite stay on course. people took video of the blimp as it wandered over a neighborhood on long island, eventually landing on a school's baseball field. the blimp was supposed to promote the manhattan institute. the pilot said the wind was blowing the blimp around so he had to make an unscheduled landing. the rest of the parade went off without a hitch. 17 giant character balloons floated above millions in new york city. snoopy and the pillbury dough

boy, the red power ranger stretched out 78 feet, huge. the parade also included the golden rams marching band from westchester university. take a listen. ♪ that was the band's version of "winter wonderland." the marching band has more than 200 musicians. they were one of only ten bands from across the country to take part in the parade, so a big congratulations to them. the macy's parade is a thanksgiving tradition, so is football in detroit. this year it was the eagles' turn to face the lions, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, this shows exactly how that game went down. yeah, these fans went all the way to detroit just to watch their team get crushed by the lions. john clark was there for every painful detroit touchdown, he joins us live now. john, this is beyond brutal.

>> yeah. just absolutely brutal. the birds are cooked and it looks like their season is cooked. a disaster here in detroit. this was really embarrassing for this eagles team. the team right now is not responding to chip kelly and his leadership. take a look at this. it really is unbelievable. some history here. it is the first time the eagles have ever given up 45 points in back-to-back games. of course, they lost 45-17 to tampa bay on sunday, and they lose 45-14 here to detroit. the eagles' defense has given up over 950 yards these last two games and it's actually the first time since 1971 the eagles have lost two straight games by 28 points or more. just a pitiful effort, and now you have to wonder are the players buying into what chip kelly is selling? listen to the eagles after a devastating loss. >> yeah, i don't think it's, you know, trying to prove a point or

anything like that. i think we got outcoached today and didn't do a very good job. >> defensive coordinator? >> yes. >> made excuses and saying should have, would have, could have, all that stuff, that's not good for us, that's not going to help us, that's not going to take back three losses in a row. no point, don't waste your time. coach made that message clear and he's right. if you want to come back and point fingers and complain, don't come back. >> we're getting whooped. guys are frustrated on the sidelines because they care. i wouldn't expect anything different from this team, so, you know, you can say it's dividing us or whatever you want to say, but at the end of the day, guys that care, they are going to get a little bit heated. we want to win football games. >> yeah, brent celek is, obviously, taking this really hard. and lane johnson was asked afterwards, do you think any of the teammates are quitting, he said not really. jason kelce said going forward they are going to find out who is with us and who the cowards

shopping season, but not everyone is eager to join those crowds. more stores are offering online deals this year, and that's giving new opportunities to take what's yours. nbc 10 investigative reporter mitch blacher shows us the new strategies you can take to protect your money and your identity. >> reporter: whether you shop in person -- >> i got to get my stuff. >> reporter: or online, american consumers are expected to spend $1.5 billion in the next four days. according to consumer protection experts, as many as 60 million americans will become identity theft victims. >> we all have day jobs and the people that we're going to find ourselves up against, the identity thieves and the scammers, we are their day job. >> reporter: adam levin is the former director of the new jersey division of consumer affairs. he says you can do simple things like checking your receipts to make sure the price offered is what you pay. online, make sure the website you're using is secure.

look for the lock in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. and above all -- >> people should be checking their bank accounts on a daily basis and their credit card accounts to make absolutely sure that every transaction they see is theirs. >> reporter: you may have also noticed retailers like target have started using that chip-embedded credit card. this is done mainly because it's a safer way to pay, but also for liability reasons. if you swipe your credit card and your information is compromised, the retailer is now on the hook for it, not your bank. >> we are living in an era now where breaches have become a certainty in life. >> reporter: while data breaches have exposed some of the biggest names in retail, from target, home depot, to ebay, you can protect yourself and your family. experts say now is the time to be checking your accounts daily. for the investigators, i'm mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. it's a holiday of healing after a south jersey town's turbulent year. how one church is trying to reunite its community after a deadly police shooting.

after two nights of protests in chicago, the city is hoping for calm on thanksgiving, but

tomorrow demonstrators are planning to be back in full force. organizers are calling for a major demonstration down michigan avenue starting at 11:00 a.m., right in the thick of the black friday crowds. over the last two nights, hundreds have marched in the streets to protest the killing of mcdonald, a police officer shot and killed the 17 year old last year, but anger boiled over this week after the officer was charged with murder and new video was released showing the deadly encounter. deadly shootings involving police have led to tension in communities across the country, and that includes bridgeton in cumberland county. now one local church is hoping thanksgiving can help turn things around. nbc 10's george spencer has our story. >> reporter: happiness was in the air this thanksgiving, and grateful smiles on the faces of a hungry crowd, including bridgeton native william roberts. >> some people live on the streets day in and day out, but

at least they got somewhere to go to get a hot meal. >> reporter: this thanksgiving meal has grown fourfold since it started in 2008. bethany grace community church sees this work as its mission, meals, clothing, showers, and support here in jersey's poorest area south of camden. >> we believe as a congregation that we are situated here to be a battleship church and that is to actually do battle with the things that are plaguing our society. >> reporter: and this thanksgiving meal comes after an especially turbulent year in bridgeton. many in this community were outraged by the police shooting death of jarome reed after a traffic stop on this corner. a local example, they say, of a nationwide concern. this police dash cam video captured the confrontation. reid was not holding a weapon, but officers said they felt imminent danger and a grand jury imposed no charges. it prompted protests in the streets, a painful chapter

according to the mayor. >> in spite of the situations that we faced in the past year, we still have a spirit of togetherness in our community. >> reporter: that spirit was on display this holiday, especially among volunteers. >> we wanted everyone on the streets and they give us a hug and say thank you, thank you for feeding us, thank you for clothing us, thank you for being nice. thank you for being who you are. >> reporter: and today recipients of that generosity returned to the world filled up and a little more grateful. reporting in bridgeton, cumberland county, george spencer, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, nice weather for your thanksgiving day. hopefully you were able to enjoy it, and tomorrow we're actually going to be warmer than today, so we could see some near record high temperatures for your black friday and, of course, i have your shopping forecast if you are heading out for that. then we have some weekend rain chances coming up both saturday and sunday.

now, for the rest of your thanksgiving evening, temperatures will be in about the mid 50s for 7:00, even 9:00 tonight, still mild by 11:00 p.m., about the low 50s. today we were in the mid 60s. 64 degrees for the high temperature, tomorrow closer to 67 degrees, the average high is 52. this is unseasonably warm and over the weekend we'll be dropping back down into the 50s, so it will be a little bit cooler, but we'll have that rain chance. here are some of the near record high temperatures we expect tomorrow. allentown and reading could be close to record high temperature, maybe even mount pocono. atlantic city kind of close, not philadelphia, the record high is 73 degrees, but there you see how unseasonably warm we are. now, if you are going to head out for any black friday shopping, midnight tonight, king of prussia temperatures near 50 degrees, same thing into parts of delaware and new jersey, and by noon tomorrow we expect dry conditions, but temperatures by then warmer. low 60s. and by the afternoon topping out about the mid 60s, some areas warmer than 67 degrees.

right now we are nice and dry. good travel weather. we really have seen that over the past several days, but in the middle of the country, not good travel weather. this is the big thanksgiving day storm we've been telling you about from chicago, down to dallas, with some snow and ice mixed in, too. we, however, will not be seeing that. tomorrow we will be warmer than today, but still nice and dry. then we go into the weekend, so for your saturday we'll see clouds increasing. there you see the showers starting to move in, so chance of showers, pretty much through the day saturday. overcast skies, even through saturday night. by sunday this whole system should start to shift towards the south, so by sunday morning best chance of showers will be mostly south of philadelphia. tonight, partly cloudy, not as cold, low temperatures mid 40s for philadelphia, 40 degrees areas north and west and tomorrow a much warmer day, 65 to 68 degrees, if you can believe that, very warm this time of the year. rain chances go back, temperatures go down a bit and going into next week we stay in the 50s, nothing unseasonably
