holt will have the very latest on this breaking news story coming up at 6:30. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosenfield. another big story tonight, this fiery crash at a busy toll plaza. take a look at this brand new video right here, the flames and smoke billowing from the booth and minutes later sky force 10 was over the damage. the car not even recognizable. the driver trapped inside was killed and tonight the question remains, what caused that driver to lose control? this crash happened this morning at the egg harbor toll plaza in hamilton township. nbc 10's south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is live along the atlantic city expressway. >> i know you spoke with the driver's father. what's he telling you about this crash? >> reporter: jacqueline and jim, honestly, he doesn't know what exactly went wrong. of course, he is shocked and saddened and does know that state police here took a series of phone calls from other drivers on the expressway today, that a driver in a silver sedan, perhaps his son, was driving

erratically, striking a barrier and riding on a rim for as long as five miles website ahead of the fiery crash. drivers came to a standstill, horrified to see a burning car and heavy smoke, as well as toll takers running to safety at 10:30 friday morning. >> one of them saw it, the other heard it. they were both able to escape before the flames spread. another trooper and myself were the first on scene. we ran out towards the vehicle. by the time we got close there was not much we could do. >> reporter: the toll plaza itself caught fire. trapped inside was 39-year-old joseph crawford of egg harbor city. >> for sure, was it joe? >> reporter: bruce told us he filled the gas tank this morning for his son to go to work at the parx casino. >> fully engulfed and the policemen are on scene and there's -- >> reporter: crawford, devastated by the sudden loss of his son and the fact the vehicle was incinerated by the flames. >> joe had a good heart and if

he wanted somebody to be there for you, he would be there for you. >> police say crawford traveled the expressway for five miles coming towards the tolls from a farther point than his home. >> i didn't see any indication there was anything different this morning. the conversation was a normal one, he said good-bye to his mom. >> reporter: sky force 10 was above as fire and police investigated the charred scene. >> just an unfortunate thing. you wish you could get there, wish there was more time, more we could do. >> to hear this is hard enough, let alone to realize tonight the car won't pull in, joe won't be upstairs. >> reporter: and mr. crawford told me he can't imagine having to identify his son's body, which he will not have to do this evening. they are hosting other loved ones to make funeral arrangements and say despite their grief, they are glad nobody else was injured. cydney long, nbc 10 news. to our weather now.

record warmth for parts of our area on this black friday. >> a lot of people had the day off and took advantage of the spring-like temperatures we had outside. nbc 10 along kelly drive in fairmount park. these people even carried their jackets with them. >> take a live look from haddonfield, camden county, where the town is getting ready to light up their christmas tree. sunset didn't make the temperatures plummet tonight. first alert meteorologist sheena parveen tracking the warm temperatures this evening. >> another great night to enjoy with the family outside and not often we can say that in late november. >> not often at all, because some areas hit record high temperatures today believe it or not. allentown and reading both hit 65 degrees, that is a record high for both areas, reading matching its record high. mount pocono got close, even atlantic city, philadelphia not so close, but still unseasonably warm today. take a look at the temperatures right now, 57 in philadelphia, about the mid 50s through the lehigh valley, 58 in pottstown, 47 millville, but surrounding areas of new jersey in about the

mid to low 50s. so it's going to stay a little bit warmer for tonight or milder, if you want to call it that, but will be dry. clouds increasing right now, but no rain, the rain is still off to the west, that will be moving in as we go into your weekend. i am tracking rain for your saturday. for tonight, though, if you're heading out, mild by 7:00 p.m., near 60 degrees, more clouds moving in overnight by 11:00 p.m., mid 50s, not as cold and saturday morning when you wake up you'll notice overcast skies, mid 50s and for the morning hours any rain should be close to the poconos or the lehigh valley, then more rain as we go through the afternoon, spreading south. coming up, timing on the rain, but on this warm evening, probably the last thing you'd think to do is go ice skating. randy gyllenhaal is live at the blue cross river rink at penn's landing. are people enjoying the warm weather? >> reporter: there are a lot of people here and they've got coats on, unlike earlier today some were wearing t-shirts. are we having fun you guys?

is it cold enough for you? does it feel like winter yet? >> no! >> reporter: you got your scarf on. look at all these people out here. some of them with their coats and scarves on. tell you what, earlier today we saw a bunch of them wearing t-shirts on the skating rink and we'll roll some video here. the blue cross river rink officially opened today, this morning, they've got this huge ice rink, a lodge that serves beer and food, plus fireplaces that nobody used today. highs in the 60s. the christmas music was blaring good from the speakers, though, much of the people didn't feel much like winter. >> hello! >> so warm out. >> we had over 100,000 skaters this year, which is record setting in our 22 years, so this year we kind of enlarged the site, we enlarged the lodge, provided more food, more skates. >> and you can see the big christmas tree here on penn's landing, the blue cross river rink will have a lighting

ceremony about this time next week on friday, and all these kids here -- they are going to have a good time out on the river front until about 11:00 tonight. for now, live on penn's landing, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. there are a lot of great reasons to be outside. die hard and determined shoppers pretty much battled rain, snow, sleet, or hail, so today's weather made it that much easier. >> crowds and people flooded stores to kick off the holiday shopping season. take a look, nbc 10 at the biggest shopping mall, king of prussia. bargain hunters making their way from store to store with bags in hand and cars circling the parking lot. desperate for a spot. door buster deals brought shoppers to the target in delaware. big electronics were the big draw from the flat screen tvs to apple watches. >> and holiday shopping season for the gloucester premium outlets in camden county. the warmer weather helped get shoppers out of the house and

into the stores this black friday. local small business owners say their best shopping days will be this weekend. the benefit they say they have over big name retailers, that story ahead at 6:15. new at 6:00 right now, philadelphia police are looking for two men who robbed a chinese restaurant in spring garden earlier this month. take a look, one of the suspects is wearing that sweatshirt that says "nation" on it, you see him point a gun and demand cash, the suspect behind him was caught after the robbery but police are looking for a third man you see there acting as a lookout at the door. from our delaware bureau this evening, a shocking discovery behind a car wash this morning. police found a man's body just after 8:30 behind the american car wash. the victim had been shot once, police still looking for a suspect in this case. nbc 10 is also working to find out the victim's name. from our jersey shore bureau in the last hour we've learned two people have died after this pontoon boat capsized near point

pleasant beach. five other people were rescued. those five are expected to be okay. witnesses say there were large swells in the area when the boat capsized. a reminder to check your smoke alarms. statistically there are more house fires in december, january, and february than any other time of the year. the nbc 10 investigators tested the most popular types of smoke alarms and found certain alarm technology is best at detecting different kinds of fires. fire safety experts say you should have both photo electric and ionization smoke detectors in your home. >> ionization actually takes smoke in. the photo electric works on a principle of locking light. >> our testing found as much as a 50-second difference in the alarms depending if a fire had flames. you can see the full investigation on our website, nbc10.com. new information on a deadly shooting involving police in

camden on tuesday. the victim's family has hired an attorney to launch an independent investigation. police responded to a domestic dispute tuesday night. the 911 caller said the man involved was possibly armed. investigators say officers exchanged gunfire with freddie baez, and baez was killed. the officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave. two women are charged with fighting at a roller skating rink in newcastle county. this cell phone camera capturing the chaos wednesday night. police arrested two teenaged girls after several fights both inside and outside the rink. no one was seriously hurt. no word what prompted the fighting. this black friday feels, well, really bleak for a lot of sports fans here in philadelphia. >> yeah, bleak to say the least after yesterday's blowout loss for the eagles in detroit. we have a live look now at lincoln financial field. the linc has been a quiet place

this is nbc 10 news. ♪ >> that music became a message to boycott black friday. the group justice or else was behind this gathering. it's encouraging the african-american community to make its voice heard by not taking part in black friday. today's rally comes on the 20th anniversary of the million man march in washington, d.c. it wasn't just the big box retailers cashing in on crowds of holiday shoppers today. local stores made a pitch for your business on this black friday. nbc 10's drew smith is live where small businesses are trying harder than ever to compete. drew? >> reporter: yeah, and this is called the small business weekend. they really took the small business saturday idea and are starting it early. you can look live right now, this is santa, happy to be here, greeting the kids. over there you'll see carollers

out here singing and they have carriage rides going through the town right now, all leading up to the big holiday tree lighting they'll be doing in 15 minutes, a big way to attract people down here to get into the businesses. this is what mitch calls a man cave meets general store. he chose to open this business last year, and he says downtown haddonfield was the perfect spot. >> great people, it's friendly, everything that you'd want, especially in having a small boutique store. >> reporter: today they were busy, as downtown businesses got an assist from the sun and warmth. >> i avoid the malls and other stores today. >> reporter: but did not avoid the visitors center where he picked up gift certificates that can be used at every business here, they are discounted this weekend in an effort to draw people in. >> i think it's easier, more friendly, there's a more almost family atmosphere. >> reporter: these shoppers

we want to update that breaking news out of colorado springs, where for several hours now police have been responding to an active shooter situation. this is near a planned parenthood. police just had a news conference and here is the latest on this. police say they are still evacuating people out of the planned parenthood building and the shooter apparently still inside. they have not spoken with that person. we know four officers have been injured, perhaps a fifth, and unknown number of injured. nbc nightly news with lester holt will have the latest coming up at 6:30. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, unseasonably warm black friday. we had two areas that hit record highs, allentown and reading. elsewhere we had near record high temperatures end out the week, but as we go into the weekend, more clouds and rain moving in, so we'll have showers

around for your saturday and cooler temperatures as we go into sunday, so finally we're going to be dropping to where we should be this time of year with our temperatures. right now we're at 53 in allentown, 58 pottstown, 57 in philadelphia, 55 degrees in wilmington. 50 in dover, 47, a cooler spot in millville, but not going to get incredibly cold tonight, not even dropping into the 30s. here's what our temperatures will be doing by 11:00 p.m., around 50 degrees and bottoming out around sunrise near 50 still, so again, not as cold as we've seen for previous nights, but either way we're going to keep seeing those clouds increasing ahead of the rain with above average temperatures tomorrow. the rain is still back off to our west, that moves in for your saturday, starting from north to south. here's future weather, tonight we're going to stay nice and dry, but the clouds keep moving in. tomorrow morning, most of the area will be under overcast skies, showers around the poconos and the lehigh valley by 8:00 a.m.

showers get more widespread by 1:00 in the afternoon, keep moving south, so by 6:00 p.m., scattered showers, mostly light rain until going into sunday morning. for south jersey and delaware, you could have an area of heavy rain, but most of you will be sleeping. then sunday you see clearing taking place from north to south. we'll see improving conditions, but cooler temperatures sunday and colder temperatures as we go into monday. so we'll finally be closer to 50 degrees. tonight, though, lows will only be around 50 for philadelphia. areas north and west about the mid 40s with the clouds increasing. so certainly not as cold, still unseasonably warm overnight tonight and still tomorrow afternoon 60 degrees, the average high is 52, so we'll still be above normal for this time of year with scattered showers. we'll see the rain move through from north to south. sunday will be cooler. 53 degrees, rain mostly south of philadelphia. clearing north to south, too, with more sunshine. monday high temperature around 49, so cooler there but we warm
