the two suspects were taken down in a shootout with police after a man hunt that lasted for several hours. >> there had to be some degree of planning that went into this, so i don't think they just ran home, put on these types of tactical clothes, grabbed guns and came back on a spur of the moment thing. >> farook's brother-in-law says the two spoke about a week ago and that family members cannot understand why the couple would leave behind a 6-month-old daughter and go on a rampage. >> i have no idea. i have no idea why would he do that, why would he do something like this? i have absolutely no idea. i'm in shock myself. >> reporter: today the fbi took control of the investigation, agencies carefully combed a house just seven miles from the scene and made an alarming discovery inside. 12 pipe bombs and tools to make ieds. the couple used two assault rifles and two handguns purchased legally to carry out the worst mass shooting since sandy hook. today president obama said society needs to change to try

and prevent these massacres from happening. >> we can't just leave it to our professionals to deal with the problem of these kinds of horrible killings. we all have a part to play. >> one of the 14 people killed in yesterday's shooting had roots in cape may county, and this afternoon we're hearing from those who are remembering him. nicolas was a long time member of the department of public health in san bernardino san bernardino. before moving to california, he worked tor cape may county's health department. former coworkers at the shore are saddened. >> can't say how shocked we were, here we were, little cape may county, 98,000 people, and suddenly one of our own out there in california now that is murdered by these terrorists. >> nicolas was 52 years old. nbc 10 is taking a closer look at the issues being raised in

the aftermath of the attack, including gun control and in the next ten minutes nbc 10's lauren mayk will have more on the potential backlash against people of the muslim faith. family members sobbed in court today as investigators revealed new details about the murders of a mother and her baby girl. police say an ex-boyfriend killed neidy ramirez and her 3-month-old daughter genesis. today he pleaded not guilty in court. cydney long was in the courtroom joining us live in cumberland county. emotional time for neidy's family today. >> reporter: jim, it really was an extremely emotional time for them. ricardo santiago, i can tell you, did not say one word in the courtroom today. he also listened by means of a translator. the entire hearing lasted all of 18 minutes, but again, it was excruciating for the victims' loved ones. a 34-year-old millville painter,

according to his friends, now suspected double murderer, ricardo santiago entered the courtroom with his attorney barely making eye contact with the judge, instead keeping his head down. santiago, according to investigators, killed his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his 5-year-old son, neidy ramirez inside her apartment friday night with something similar to an electrical cord. >> neidy was murdered first. the manner in which she was murdered, she had a ligature around her neck. >> reporter: the victims' loved ones sobbed in pain. police say the estranged couple had a disagreement about her son but it was her new baby girl, genesis, prosecutors say became the next victim. >> the baby was murdered separately. the cause and manner of death also a homicide, but the child's chest, the 3-month-old chest was essentially crushed. >> reporter: all this before dumping the bodies in a marsh.

he entered a plea of not guilty, telling the court he cooperated and it's his first defense. the judge doubled his bail from $1 to $2 million. neidy's family had no words for what they heard. we did ask their attorney -- why did you say he's not guilty, can you explain that? >> i cannot talk to the press. >> reporter: now prosecutors fear santiago is a flight risk. he is an american citizen, but he has allegedly commented, according to investigators, that he would get money together and flee to mexico to his relatives there. no additional court dates have been set. live in bridgeton, cydney long, nbc 10 news. a former police officer accused of kidnapping his daughter and stabbing his mother will return to new york to face trial. a former new jersey police officer was stripped of his badge after found guilty of filing false reports more than a decade ago. well, this video from tuesday

shows his latest run-in with the law being arrested with his daughter in the car. you can see police pulling him over, took him right into custody. he took off with the girl after allegedly stabbing the child's mother. she's recovering in the hospital. she is expected to survive. we've learned that a philadelphia police officer was hurt in a crash while responding to a call this morning. the officer's suv collided with a white sedan and ended up crashing into a utility pole. this all happened around 9:00 in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. both drivers were injured and went to the hospital. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we had the sun, but it definitely felt a bit cooler outside today thanks to some strong winds. the wind will be dying down, but we are in store for a chilly night ahead. >> chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here now. glenn, we got used to the warmer temperatures. >> and we're going to be seeing the warmer temperatures again. we got a bit of a cool down

that's temporary, also a few snowflakes. that wet road there, that's the result of snow flurries that melted when they hit the roads. you can see that on the radar, not very impressive there moving into new jersey, but a couple more snowflakes could occur in the poconos over the next couple of hours. this is some lake effect with the cold air coming over the warm lakes. and we have some fairly gusty winds still, 25 to 30 miles an hour, not quite as strong as what we saw a few hours ago. so that wind already in the process of diminishing and that trend will continue as, of course, the temperatures go down. by midnight it's 41 in philadelphia, 30s in the suburbs. we'll see how cold it's going to get, then how much it's going to warm up over the weekend with the seven day in a few minutes. police have detained five new jersey fifth graders for allegedly plotting to attack a high school during a field trip. investigators say the students

brought a device to school and were planning to use it during the field trip to cliffton high school. turns out the device was nonexplosive. the students were caught when teachers and administrators found written plans about the attack. all five have been suspended. a philadelphia high school student is charged with making terroristist threats against a classmate. the 16 year old high school student is accused of sending threatening messages to a girl he's fighting with, some pictures included pictures of him holding a gun. more police were at the high school today to provide extra security during arrival and dismissal times. at 4:00 here, philadelphia police joining in the investigation of a local high school principal accused of pushing a student during a confrontation yesterday morning. the principal was brought into the school to help bring it back on track but allegedly lost his cool during a disagreement about

a uniform violence. sources say the girl spit on mohammed, then he pushed her. the student wasn't hurt. mohammed has been reassigned pending an investigation. we have new information now about the thieves who stole packages right off people's steps. police in delaware say they've issued warrants for the two men they believe are in this video right here. video clearly showing a car pulling up minutes after a ups driver made a delivery. then a man in a steelers jersey gets out and takes the boxes. here's another look at the two men wanted in this case. brandon tony and michael leary. police are asking anyone who knows where they are to come forward. there was some court confusion today involving jahlil okafor. we're talking about municipal court, not the basketball court. today okafor's attorneys showed up for a hearing over a traffic ticket okafor received. the attorneys thought that paying a fine finalized the case, but the judge said he wants to hear from the police

officer involved before anything is finalized. another hearing will be scheduled after the new year. historic change is coming to the u.s. military. today u.s. secretary of defense ash carter announced women in every branch of service will be eligible for all combat jobs, no exceptions. nbc 10's keith jones is live in the digital operations center to explain what this move actually means. the changes will be happening very soon. >> 30 days from today, that's how quickly defense secretary ash carter says he'll direct all branches of the military to do this but they'll have until april 1st to make accommodations. secretary carter says our nation cannot effectively defend the nation when half isn't eligible to defend in combat. all positions will be open to women as long as they can meet the required standards. >> be allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars, and lead soldiers into combat. they'll be able to serve as army

rangers, green berets, army s.e.a.l.s, and everything else previously only open to men. >> the republican chairman of the senate and house armed services committee says they'll carefully review carter's decision as it could have, quote, consequential impacts on the effectiveness of our military. secretary carter said commanders have agreed already with his decision, except for the marines. they ask that some positions still be designated for men only, but carter says there will be no exceptions. live in the digital operations center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> all right, thanks for that, keith. well, it's coming down to the wire. right now philadelphia city council is hearing from comcast executives and the public to decide whether to approve a new franchise agreement between the city and the cable service provider. the agreements come up for renegotiation every 15 years. the city is pushing the cable giant for significant community givebacks. comcast, by the way, is the

parent company of nbc 10. septa wants to extend its rail service to the king of prussia mall. this morning the economy league of greater philadelphia released a study outlining the benefits of the rail extension. opponents say it would create thousands of jobs and help the economy. >> this is a great opportunity for our customers. >> the project will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. septa said it would look into federal money as an option. sky force 10 catching fire crews getting the upper hand on this fire in west philadelphia this morning. this looks like more smoke and flames they were dealing with here. this was around 11:00. we're told no one was hurt and there's no word on what started that fire. a new beginning today for a

business that went down in flames a year ago. this was the scene last year when this fast signs business burned to the ground. in the next hour, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held to introduce a completely rebuilt building and new start for the fastsigns company. former daily show host jon stewart returned to capitol hill today to urge lawmakers not to forget the september 11 first responders now suffering from cancer and other illnesses. stewart and others are calling on congress to pass an extension of health care benefits and compensation for those who were exposed to toxic dust after the attacks. the health care fund for 9/11 first responders expired earlier this year. >> they don't realize it's not just 14 years, it's still affecting us years later. we're going to have a lot of people affected by this.

>> supporters are hoping the extension will be included in a bill that could pass as soon as next week. oscar pistorius is officially a convicted murderer this afternoon. the south african appeals court convicted the double amputee olympian today. apistorius insisted he thought reeva steenkamp was an intruder. regardless of who might have been behind the door, pistorius should have known someone could be killed if he fired. pistorius will now have to be resentenced. 20 minutes of nonstop news has new developments in the san bernardino shooting. one of the victims allegedly had a heated conversation with suspect syed farook about islam two weeks before the attack. it is not clear if the alleged discussion was a factor in yesterday's shootingeshooting, something investigators will be looking into. authorities say the second suspect, farook's life, had a

pakistani passport and came to the u.s. on a fiance visa. president obama ordered flags at the capitol and the white house to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims. 14 people were killed and 21 others were injured. while the motive of these shooters is still unknown, many are worried their religion will be a factor and affect how other muslims are treated. >> lauren mayk shows us now how local muslims are trying to prevent a backlash against their faith. >> reporter: if you were on twitter today, you may have noticed the term "muslim killers" trending. it's the kind of thing that's distressing for the muslim community as they deal with questions and criticism again. in ardmore, a family dentist, this is everyday life, but when he heard about the shootings on the other side of the country, his first thought was personal. >> horrified and i was praying, i hope it's not a muslim. i hope it's not a pakistani. >> reporter: the news was not

what he wanted to hear. the one alleged shooter even reported to have a pakistani passport. aware of potential backlash towards the muslim community, the council on american islamic relations quickly spoke out, along with a family member of the suspect. executive director of cair in philadelphia. >> for the muslim community when an act like this happens, such as in paris, there's a sense of anger that yet again extremists are hijacking the religion of islam for either political or in this case in san bernardino maybe deranged purposes. >> reporter: active in the local pakistani and muslim community, he has seen attitudes change over the years. things like travel scrutinized. >> slowly and slowly these things are creeping up, creeping up, creeping up. muslims are put in an image bag

all the time. >> reporter: is there anything that can stop that? >> i'm not sure. >> reporter: some good news, he tells me he has never had anyone say anything negative toward him. with 40 years in this community. in ardmore, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. the terror attacks in paris, though, have led to some backlash against muslims. here in the united states it sparked a debate of taking in refugees from syria. a new poll shows more americans are concerned about home grown terrorism. 58% say they are a greater threat than terrorists hiding among syrian refugees. still 52% of those polled say they opposed accepting the refugees into the u.s.. today presidential candidates ted cruz and marco rubio discussed the san bernardino shootings at the republican jewish coalition meeting in washington, d.c. both spoke about the growing frequency of mass shootings.

really improved, and the wind that was a big factor earlier today, that even is diminishing. we've got some colder nights ahead, nothing too extreme for this time of the year, then a mild weekend. going to love this weekend forecast. and look at that sky, how different it was than 24 hours ago. and 48 hours ago when you couldn't see much of anything. 49 degrees now, the winds 17, gusting to 25 miles an hour. that's actually down from the gusts over 30 that we were seeing just a couple of hours ago. we're in the mid 40s in pottstown and westchester, 46 in allentown, 46 in glassboro. 48 atlantic city international and also in dover. those temperatures pretty close to average for this time of the year and a good bit cooler than yesterday at this time. five to ten degrees colder. and with the wind, cold enough to calculate a wind chill, it's 39 in pottstown, 38 in reading,

28 in mount pocono. parts of the poconos got their first snow of the season this morning with some lake effect snow flurries, and there are a couple more coming through. these are lighter than what happened this morning when a couple places actually got an inch of snow. i don't think this will amount to very much, and other than that, the rest of the country is pretty dry. and that dry weather is going to be there in new england when the eagles are playing on sunday. temperatures above average. this is pretty mild, nice weather for new england in december. pretty lucky for that. now the future cast as we go through the night tonight, temperatures, of course, dropping. and the wind dropping. so there will be in the 30s by later this evening, 30s in most of the area by tomorrow morning. couple places could drop into the upper 20s. again, that's not unusual for this time of the year.

and then tomorrow during the afternoon, temperatures are going into the 50s. a few degrees warmer than what we saw today, but there's just no cloud cover. this is the future radar and satellite. it's not showing either. and then on friday, friday night, not quite as cold, and saturday we start the warmup and temperatures get well up into the 50s. by sunday we could be talking about 60-plus degrees. then things get a little bit interesting. we're dry through the weekend, but on monday we're going to be watching down to the south and see if this coastal storm is going to develop close enough to us to bring rain. more on that later. tonight clear and colder with the wind diminishing, 26 for the low in philadelphia. tomorrow, couple degrees higher and less wind, so it won't feel quite as chilly as today. and the seven-day forecast, saturday's beautiful day, 58

stood tall in front of independence national park. hundreds are expected to attend a parade, where onlookers will see hundreds of cars topped with mo nor ras, as well. >> that's my backyard, i drove past it this morning. a family in the philippines transformed their house into a massive light show. they are using hundreds and thousands of tiny l.e.d. lights, colorful ones, of course. the display draws huge crowds. looks like it's a mall or something. >> that's a house? >> the family began the tradition 12 years ago but just started opening their house to visitors within the last five years. most of us don't have that kind of light show or extravagance at our own homes. >> even a small display, in fact, could be slowing down your wifi signal. a communications director launched an app and says holiday lights can cause electrical

educate the students on the dangers of sexting. nbc 10 was there as the students had questions for the investigators. nbc 10's deanna durante was with those children, she's live for us this afternoon. deanna, what you learned may surprise a lot of parents. >> reporter: it may. you know, students have been talking about this sexting investigation since it broke two weeks ago. investigators are not able to speak much about that case, however, they were here today trying to answer students' questions, many of them, despite this investigation going on for two weeks, surprised that something like this can lead to charges and even jail time. >> you have choices, don't do it, and -- but if you're a kid, then it's kind of controversial. >> reporter: controversial? yes, but it's also illegal. was this the first time you heard you could go to jail for something like that? >> yeah, i thought it was for kids 18 or older or adults 18 and over. surprised me this year and this

year only this has happened, it's so vast. >> reporter: this event was scheduled before news of the sexting investigation broke. the students involved are past and present students who attend high school. last month a parent discovered images on a cell phone and police soon learned a dropbox had been created that had images of girls in various stages of undress. prosecutors and police say seminars like this one educate kids, where they tell them the law and kids their age here in the delaware county have, in fact, been charged with crimes related to sexting. >> up to six months to one year in jail. >> i wasn't aware of the severity of the laws. i knew there were some consequences. >> reporter: kids asked the questions between sexting and pornography and if faces are not shown, if charges can be filed. >> we don't have to have your face if it is proved it came from property you own. >> reporter: spent time trying to explain just because you delete a photo, doesn't mean it's gone. also when you upload something

through an app or social media site, it is there forever. reporting live, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> all right, deanna. this is a much larger problem affecting school districts all over the area. we looked back over the last year and found at least four different counties where students were involved in sexting scandals. this one involved middle schoolers, one as young as 11 years old. police say nude photos of students at valley forge were viewed by students at home and at school. four students face charges, including distribution of child pornography. here are some of the other headlines we're following on nbc 10 news at 4:00. 75 rounds of ammunition, that's what investigators say the two san bernardino shooting suspects used to kill 14 people and to injure 21 others. today we learned fbi agents found 12 pipe bombs, tools to make ieds, and at least 3,000 rounds of ammunition inside syed

farook and tashfeen malik's home. a south jersey man pleaded not guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend and her infant daughter. 34-year-old ricardo santiago was charged with homicide in the deaths of neidy ramirez and her daughter genesis. police say the estranged couple had been fighting about their son. the judge doubled san ed santia bail from $1 to $2 million. a man is recovering after he told police two men in ski masks knocked on his door and pistol whipped him. this happened after 5:30 this morning on the 1600 block of west butler street in philadelphia. investigators have been talking to a witness, but so far they have not made any arrests. philadelphia city council voted to pass a resolution calling on district attorney seth williams to fire three prosecutors caught up in the so-called porngate scandal. authorities say the three sent or received e-mails with pornographic content while

working for the state attorney general's office. calling for the three to be terminated and a special prosecutor to be appointed to investigate. earlier this week attorney general kathleen kane announced she's bringing in outside help to investigate involving several government officials. a special prosecutor will lead a team of lawyers in an independent review of pornographic and other objectionable content. to news from our delaware bureau, 23 police recruits are graduating. the recruits spent the last six months undergoing intense physical and academic instruction. 16 of the 23 recruits will become new castle county police officers. the others will become police officers elsewhere. one officer will work for the delaware department of natural resources. staying in delaware, more high school students in the state will be able to study abroad next year. today delaware governor jack markell announced the expansion

of a state-funded program that lets students spend four weeks in china studying science, technology, engineering and take math courses. they also take mandarin language classes. 20 students went to china this last summer. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas, two cities will celebrate the holidays with tree lighting ceremonies. tonight in philadelphia the mayor will switch on the lights before 8:00 tonight. the tree in the city hall courtyard is a 45-foot tall fir, there will be performances from cast members "a christmas story: the musical." camden will also hold its annual holiday tree lighting this evening, as well. that's happening at 5:00 p.m. in front of city hall. there will be free parking, hot cocoa, and plenty of carollers. well, a woman's getting a lot of attention on social media for what she calls a lesson in kindness. we're going to tell you the story behind this birthday cake and why it has special meaning

this is nbc 10 news. >> in just about an hour from now, nasa plans to launch a rocket filled with supplies for the international space station. the spacecraft will carry more than 7,000 pounds of crew supplies, vehicle hardware, and scientific research tools. it's scheduled to arrive at the i.s.s. on sunday. it is another blow to the united states secret service, a new congressional report slams the agency, saying its security lapses are worse than we thought. >> and those systemic problems

could endanger the president. brian mooar reports from washington. >> reporter: when a connecticut man vaulted over the white house fence on thanksgiving day, it was the latest in a long series of embarrassments for the united states secret service. the new congressional oversight report out today finds the agency needs to be saved from itself. >> secret service is in crisis, the situation is getting worse, not better. >> reporter: the bipartisan report reveals previously undisclosed breaches and security lapses that could have endangered president obama. >> they had a lot of people with guns near the president that the secret service didn't know had guns. how does that happen? >> reporter: the report blames devastating budget cuts, understaffed and overworked. calls for the president himself to push for urgent changes. in a statement, the secret service said, "our leadership has long acknowledged in addition to its many successes, the secret service faces many challenges." today the white house stood

behind joe clancy, the former agent president obama hired to reorganize, rebuild, and retrain the beleaguered agency. does the president still have faith in director clancy at the secret service? >> absolutely, absolutely he does. >> reporter: this new report finds troubling evidence the secret service may not be up to a mission where failure could have tragic consequences. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. in just a few hours, a developer will lay out his plan for a project in delaware county, but it has some residents concerned this afternoon. more than 200 acres would be developed into the cardinal crossing town center. it would include stores, office space, townhouses, and a park. the stores are expected to bring in thousands of jobs, but many in the community worry a forest will be torn down to make way for the project and make an already bad traffic problem worse. >> i think it needs to stay green, but it can also be a

a brand new delaware charter school could close its doors just months after opening.

>> the school met -- the delaware met school in wilmington just opened in august, but as nbc 10's delaware bureau reporter tim furlong tells us, it's not meeting state standards. >> reporter: the 210 ninth and tenth graders that started at the brand new charter school might need to pick another school and start there next month. >> this is what we sign up for, flexibility for higher accountability. >> reporter: she represents the more than 14,000 kids who attend charter schools, based on the information, the state charter school accountability committee had no other choice than to recommend the place closes in january, just four months after it opened. school leaders wouldn't talk with me today, they discouraged students from talking, too, but the state department of ed found the school's lesson plans don't meet state standards and isn't compliant with special needs students individualized programs. concerns about the school leadership and financial viability moving forward. the school is a big picture

style school that lets students try out real careers. i'm told the style of the school isn't the problem here, it's the implementation. on december 7th, school leaders and parents can walk from the school on that corner to the state building on that corner where there's going to be a public hearing. they can make their case for fixing the school's problems and keeping the school open. the state department of education secretary will make a final decision on december 17th. how can you be sure you're picking a good school for your child, charter or otherwise? the state has a screening process, but clearly there are no guarantees. the best thing you can do is ask the right questions. >> what is the model, how long is the model been around, what kind of curriculum are you using, who's your leader, who's on the board? can i sit on the board? >> reporter: ask the right questions, then hope for the best. it might now be too late for this school. in wilmington, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. nbc 10 news at 5:00 is next.
