in the way of sunshine today, and early this morning, even this afternoon for a small period of time we had some snow flurries up in the poconos, and that's really because of this strong northwest wind. so we have that lake effect rain and snow showers to our north and west and the strong winds help to blow some of that in, mostly to the higher elevations, but the rest of the area kind of chilly through the day today. the wind continues right now, so it's still a little windy outside, but as we go overnight tonight, the winds will diminish and once that happens with the clear skies temperatures will be dropping down pretty quickly. we do stay dry into tomorrow afternoon, friday at 1:00 p.m. the wind direction is going to keep us on a cool note, but above normal for this time of the year, around the mid to low 50s. dry conditions staying in the forecast to end out the week, big area of high pressure into saturday, so we stay nice and dry into the weekend. sunday the position of the high is going to move offshore, so we will get a change in the wind

it comes as the school is working to end ongoing violence there. >> nbc 10's george spencer has been digging up new details on the story today. >> reporter: that principal has now been reassigned while investigators do their work reviewing surveillance video and talking to witnesses. over the past several years, images captured on cell phones inside this school have prompted the very concerns that brought this principal here in the first place. last year's cell phone video of a substitute teacher apparently knocked out by a student produced the last round of violence concerns at the school and the promise of change from the school principal, abdul mohammed. >> we are in a time of crisis, but we're in a time of hope. >> reporter: now that principal is, himself, under investigation for allegations of getting physical with a student during an argument. >> he's really been for these kids, pro kids, so this is really surprising. >> reporter: a parent who's withholding judgment until the investigation is complete.
5:31 pm
the school district tells us mohammad got into an argument with a student over a uniform violation around 9:30 yesterday morning and ended up pushing her. sources say the girl spit on the principal and he may have responded with a defensive shove. >> i just have questions about even, like, his mentality, is he capable of running this school if he's going to be violent or even physical with a student? >> reporter: nbc 10 has covered the issue with violence at bartram repeatedly. the injured substitute teacher was one example and before that a gym teacher also knocked out. the district promised more police and more security cameras. now a best principal is covering mohammad's duties here, but several parents and students say they'll stand by their principal because of the progress he's already made. >> the school is starting to change, getting better again, so he's pretty much doing his job. >> reporter: mohammad had been at the school for about two years before being reassigned as part of this investigation

today. police are now doing their work to see if charges are warranted against either the principal or the student. reporting in southwest philadelphia, george spencer, nbc 10 news. to this now, police say a california man and his wife were loaded to kill at a company holiday party. >> we've learned other new details about the san bernardino shootings within the last half hour from a u.s. intelligence official. syed farook allegedly used social media to contact extremists under fbi scrutiny. the intelligence official also says that investigators are still trying to determine whether and how farook became radicalized and if he was in contact with any foreign terrorist organization. joining us now to take a closer look is dr. scott white. >> he's a professor of homeland security and security management at drexel university, also a former officer with the canadian security intelligence service. dr. white, thank you so much for joining us. you know, this is a complicated
5:33 pm
investigation. how do you begin to determine if it's terrorism or something else? >> that's a good question. i think what you're going to be looking at is the fbi are going to take possession of his computer, monitor his television traffic, they are going to look at any correspondence he's made through traditional correspondence, mail system, anything and everything is up for grabs here now to investigate. so there's going to be extensive, obtaining warrants, because there could be further people they want to arrest later so they are keeping the chain of custody and evidence secure and all warrants being issued to obtain information correctly and by law. >> as we just mentioned, we just found out the suspect syed farook used social media to be contacting extremists who were already under fbi scrutiny. you touched on this about looking into the kinds of communications he was involved in. we also know when the fbi went into his house they found a dozen pipe bombs, thousands of rounds of ammunition.
5:34 pm
does it appear as though other people were helping this couple or should have known this was going to happen? >> good question, and i think the fbi is going to investigate this, but i think this is what separates it from a workplace violence. i mean, all of this, the collection of the weaponry, the building of the explosive devices would have taken time. this isn't someone who drove home after an argument, picked up a firearm and went back to work. this is an individual who's spent a lot of time building these bombs and obtaining, you know, some 1,600 rounds of projectiles for his four firearms he had with him. >> dr. white, the fbi is calling this in the very least, you heard it yesterday, domestic terrorism. authorities later told nbc news one of the suspects had been radicalized, was in touch with people who expressed those views. some people might be asking right now, why isn't that enough to declare this terrorism? >> that's a good question. ultimately i wouldn't call this
5:35 pm
domestic terrorism, this is international terrorism done domestically. he's been radicalized and that's what adds the international part of this equation. so this is really international terrorism operationalized domestically. i tend to believe it is. >> all right, dr. white, thank you so much, we appreciate your time. >> you're very welcome. nbc 10 will be bringing you any new developments in the san bernardino shootings as soon as we get them. of course, this is an unfolding and evolving investigation. you can always download the free nbc 10 app for breaking news, plus we will have a live report from california in just about ten minutes. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> it is a cold and breezy night. here's a live look at center city, philadelphia, where it's going to get even colder. you're going to need the coats tonight. >> definitely, and the extra blanket on your bed or turn up the heat. sheena parveen is here with more on how cold it's going to get.
