uncovered, the arsenal that they found earlier today. 12 pipe bombs, 3,000 rounds of ammunition, and tools to make ieds. today fbi agents made an alarming discovery when they carefully combed through the house of the san bernardino suspects. the one thing they haven't found, a motive. >> it would be irresponsible and premature to call this terrorism. >> it is possible that this was terrorist related, but we don't know. it's also possible that this was workplace related. >> reporter: today police revealed that syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik used 75 roub rounds of ammunition at farook's work. the two suspects were taken down in a shootout with police after a man hunt that lasted for several hours. >> i have no idea why would he do that, why would he do something like this, i have absolutely no idea.

i'm in shock myself. >> farook's brother-in-law said the two spoke about a week ago. even family members cannot find out why the couple would leave behind a 6 month old daughter and go on a rampage. >> the amount of obvious preplanning that went in, the amount of armaments that he had, the weapons and the ammunition, there was obviously a mission here. >> they could have continued to do another attack. we intercepted them before that happened, obviously. >> a candlelight vigil will be held tonight in california for the 14 people who died and the 21 others who were injured. the wounded include two police officers. reporting live from the digital operations center, i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. staying with this story now, some of the victims are still being identified right now, but we do know one has local ties in south jersey. nicolas thalasinos worked in

cape may county before heading out to san bernardino with his wife. ted greenberg reports how his wife and former coworkers are coping with this tragedy. >> i knew he was gone as soon as i heard about what happened. i pretty much knew in my heart. >> reporter: as jennifer thalasinos grieved in california for her murdered husband nick, former colleagues in cape may county are also heart broken. >> i'm shocked. i can't tell you how shocked i was. >> reporter: free holder director gerald thornton oversaw the county's health department when nick thalasinos worked there as an inspector more than a decade ago. this morning, thornton and other former coworkers learned thalasinos was among the victims killed in yesterday's mass shooting in san bernardino. >> here we are little cape may county, 98,000 people, and suddenly have one of our own out there in california now that is murdered by these terrorists. >> reporter: thalasinos worked for cape may county for 13 years

until he resigned in 2002 to take a similar job in california. >> he really worked hard, i can tell you, he made sure that the county of cape may was protected. >> because of his love of god he had such a big heart and he loved everybody. >> reporter: thornton also says he expected to have a moment of silence at the next meeting for nick thalasinos. in cape may courthouse, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. police say today they don't believe there were surveillance cameras in the room where the shootings happened in california but cell phone video from inside the building does show a police officer risking his life to make sure everyone made it out of the building safely. take a look. >> thank you, thank you. try to relax, everyone try to relax. i'll take a bullet before you do, that's for damn sure. just be cool, okay? >> see that right there, there was a child also in the building at the time. the officer got everyone together and then escorted them out of the building.

it's not your imagination, mass shootings have become all too common. tonight in about ten minutes we'll look into the gun control debate. and tonight lester holt will broadcast nbc nightly news live from san bernardino. extensive coverage coming up right after this newscast. to some breaking news here at home, sky force 10 over this breaking news in new castle, delaware, a fire put out minutes ago at the budget motor lodge. see there ladders still raised to the roof there, firefighters rescued one person from the building but we're not aware of any injuries right now. an electrical cord in a trash bag. those are some of the disturbing items prosecutors say an ex-boyfriend used to kill a mother and her child. the suspect had his first court appearance today in cumberland county. cydney long is live in bridgeton. this had to be excruciating information for the victims' loved ones who were in court.

>> reporter: jim, it was hard for anyone really not to cry this afternoon. it was an extremely emotional hearing that lasted less than 20 minutes, but that 20 minutes, as you said, excruciating for the victims' family. also the judge in this case today denies the defense request for leniency, instead doubling the suspect's bail from $1 million to $2 million. ricardo santiago didn't speak one word, instead he hung his head as prosecutors painted him as a ruthless killer who they say strangled his ex-girlfriend neidy ramirez. >> neidy was murdered first. >> reporter: with his bare hands and electrical type cord, her last breath inside her apartment. ramirez's loved ones heart broken by the details cried openly in court, but then the devastation of what killed her infant daughter genesis, who suffered blunt force from a crushed chest. >> after the child had been essentially kneed in the chest,

went into some type of convulsion. >> reporter: prosecutors say it was a swampy wildlife refuge where investigators recovered the baby inside a trash bag and neidy's body nearby buried in leaves. the victim's own car used to dump the body. and placed strategically on route 55. >> for the sole purpose of taking everybody off the track. >> reporter: neidy's loved ones left the courthouse empty for words. no leniency on bail. can you explain why you entered a plea of not guilty? >> i cannot talk to the press. >> treat both homicides as an individual homicide and put $1 million on each of them. >> reporter: nbc 10 also learned today santiago spent a night in jail in february for threatening to kill someone. but current domestic violence laws prevent investigators from revealing to us who that victim was. santiago, meantime, is considered a flight risk because he does have family in mexico

and another stipulation of his bail, he's to have no contact whatsoever with the victim's family. live in bridgeton, cydney long, nbc 10 news. to first alert weather now, a chilly and breezy evening out there, still tolerable temperatures, though, for early december. nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here now with his first alert forecast. not too bad, at least the rain's gone, glenn. >> the rain and fog we've seen is all gone, we can finally see again the wind has cleaned things out, but it's been fairly gusty during the day today. right now it is not gusty anywhere near what we saw just a couple of hours ago. 25 miles an hour in philadelphia, other places not even seeing gusts at all, so the wind is already diminishing. we have nothing on the live radar, we did have some snow flurries up in the pocono mountains, but even those have pretty much gone away. so as the night goes on, still kind of windy out there and on

the chilly side in the mid 40s, but nothing too cold for this time of the year. the wind diminishes by 11:00 and by tomorrow morning it's chilly, but it's also nearly calm. we'll see how much it's going to warm up over the weekend with the seven day in a few minutes. >> see you then, glenn. the city of camden is reopening a speeding case involving jahlil okafor. okafor's lawyer went before a judge today after the municipal court rejected his guilty plea and fine. the sixers' center admitted to driving 108 miles an hour across the ben franklin bridge back in october. his attorney says the only reason they are reopening the case is because video resurfaced of a fight outside a boston bar and publicized the speeding ticket. >> the shame that any other defendant would be able to enter into a plea agreement and it wouldn't matter but because who he is he's almost becoming

victimized. >> this is the video from the bar fight that happened last week. quickly escalates from yelling to a brawl in the street. the 76ers suspended okafor for two games. a former south jersey police officer will spend time behind bars for beating up a woman. raymond glick assaulted a woman he lived with back in march. she wept to the hospital two weeks later. he was fired from the department after serving 24 years. a dover police officer caught on video kicking a suspect in the head basically said today he had bad aim. thomas webster iv, who's a white officer, broke a black suspect's jaw two years ago. he said on the stand today he was aiming for the man's upper body and not his head. webster also said he was scared and feared for his safety because he was told lateef dickerson had a gun. dash cam video shows dickerson placed his hands on the ground when he was kicked.

governor tom wolf is saying he expects a budget deal well before christmas. today the governor defended his plan to lift sales tax exemptions to increase money to schools. pennsylvania's been without a budget for five months now. lawmakers added voting sessions tomorrow and over the weekend to work on a deal and a short time ago we learned a secret budget package will be revealed in closed door meetings tomorrow. septa wants to extend its rail service out to the king of prussia mall. this morning the economy league of greater philadelphia released a study outlining the benefits of the rail extension. the project would cost hundreds of millions of dollars. septa said it would look into federal funding options. coming up next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, mass shootings on a daily basis. tonight we look at the gun control debate fuelled again by another tragedy. also, a break in the case after nbc 10 aired this

california, yesterday were bought legally, but not by the suspects. they did legally purchase the revolvers. the fbi found more than 1,200 rounds for the rifles inside a redlands home. the deadly mass shootings reignite the gun control debate in this country. presidential candidates brought up the issue immediately after the shootings, but what's being done to address the growing gun violence? tim furlong reports. >> just another day in the united states of america. >> reporter: that's how the bbc covered the shooting in california. don't be mad, they are right. this was our sixth mass shooting in a week, we've had 355 so far this year, we have 5% of the planet's population, but 31% of its mass shootings. >> i want you to read through these stats about gun violence in america. >> reporter: this woman read through the stats on my ipad, she has her theory about the shootings. >> people don't focus on mental health, i feel mental health and gun violence or violence period, there's a correlation between

that. >> i would like to have a brief moment of silence. >> reporter: moments of silence, well wishes, condolences, all nice but useless gestures. they haven't stopped the killing. >> our thoughts and prayers are not enough. >> reporter: that's the cover of the new york daily news, too, god isn't fixing this, surrounded by tweets offering prayers but no solutions. hillary clinton tweeted, "we must take action to stop gun violence." something her husband and recent presidents from both parties couldn't figure out, though. pennsylvania senator bob casey tweeted thoughts and prayers and a call for action like a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, many people reminding him bad guys like the ones in california don't follow laws. some people tell me casey is right. >> they need to get rid of the high powered guns. >> reporter: days after more than 185,000 americans got black friday background checks, that's a record up 5% from last year, some say maybe more law-abiding citizens with guns would be a

good thing, maybe potential mass killers think twice. >> target gun free zones it seems every time. ♪ let there be peace on earth, it's a nice song, but most people tell me they aren't convinced their elected leaders have the plan or in some cases the desire to let that peace begin with them. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> republicans in congress today said they will not move quickly to bring up new gun control legislation. meanwhile, democrats in new jersey failed to override governor chris christie's gun control bill. the assembly postponed today's vote after it didn't get the support it needed. lawmakers plan to try again. the bill required potential gun buyers to clear a mental health record to first notify law enforcement. we have an update now on stolen packages taken from people's homes in new castle county.

there are now warrants out for the men police believe are here in this surveillance video we showed you two days ago. a car followed a ups driver, then the guy here in the steelers jersey got out and took boxes from someone's front steps. here's a close up at the two men wanted in this case, brandon tony and michael leary and police are asking anyone who knows them to call detectives. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> yeah, quite a change over the last 24 hours. we had two days of rain and clouds and fog and today things cleaned out. we had a lot of wind that brought in the drier and cooler air, but even that wind is diminishing now. we had some colder nights setting up compared to what we've seen recently, but not compared to a typical december. and a mild weekend. it's going to be an un-december like weekend. live pictures showing the buildings again after a couple of days. 47 degrees with clear skies,

wind 13 miles an hour. feels like it's 41 when you add the wind in. and it's in the 40s across just about the entire area. 37 degrees in mount pocono, first measurable snow of the season in a couple of pocono locations this morning. that's pretty pathetic, takes until december for the mountains to get their first snow. 10 to 15 degrees colder than at this time yesterday, so you can feel it when you go outside. and the wind making the feel like it is in the 30s. the wind will be diminishing tomorrow morning, so won't be much of a wind chill on top of these temperatures. could be as low as 29 in allentown. 36 degrees in philadelphia. and similar temperatures for tomorrow night, as well. there are those few flurries up in northeastern pennsylvania, otherwise things are pretty quiet across much of the country, except for that snow up in maine. and it's not going to be cold enough to snow on sunday up in

new england. it's going to be dry, it's going to be cool, but not very cold for this time of the year for football in new england. it's kind of unusual. we have that northwest flow now and the dry air continues to push into the area, and high pressure building across the region just as we go through the weekend and that's going to assure us of a lot of sunshine and the temperatures going to be going up each day as we head towards sunday. clear and cold with wind diminishing tonight. 36 for the low in the city, 29 north and westment then during the day tomorrow a lot of sunshine. less wind, and the temperatures up a few degrees. it will feel more comfortable tomorrow. low to mid 50s. and then even milder on saturday with very little wind. not much wind on sunday, up to 62 degrees. sunshine both days. the clouds increase on monday, then we watch for a possible coastal development of a storm to our south on tuesday.
