a work police dispute? some combination of both? the fbi says it's still not sure but investigators say it's clear the killers were prepared for a larger attack. police say syed farook and his wife had more than a dozen pipe bombs and thousands of rounds of ammunition and investigators say farook had contacted islamic extremists on social media. we've also learned one of the victims used to live in south jersey. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is gathering new information for us live in our digital operation centers. >> for years nicholas thalasina worked in cape may, new jersey, then he moved to california and was at a similar job. he was at a holiday party where two shooters opened fire. many of the 14 victims worked together at the local health department and they died together at their office holiday party when two shooters stormed in with rifles and explosives. >> i feel my husband was

basically martyred and i'm sure he went down fighting and protecting people. >> reporter: jennifer lost her husband nicholas in the attack. he was a health inspector and he knew the gunmen, syed farook, a co-worker who for some reason turned on his colleagues. >> he knew syed, he worked with him and he never had anything bad to say about him. >> thalasinos moved from california to south jersey. he worked as a health inspector in cape may county. >> he worked hard. i can tell you. he made sure the county of cape may was protected. >> his former co-workers cannot believe someone would target public servants. >> suddenly we have one of our own out there in california now that is murdered by these terrorists. i. >> reporter: those suspects, a husband and wife, were killed after police chased their black suv. sources tell nbc news siyed

farook has become radicalized. that's something co-workers say comes as a surprise. >> i think all of this, when he got radicalized and everything else i think this was happening behind the scenes. he wasn't showing this part of himself at work. >> reporter: nicholas leaves behind a former wife and son in pennsylvania, another son in new jersey. meantime, his family in california says he was a dedicated mess yanick jew and was outspoken about the threat of terrorism. live tonight, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 23450unews. the a hostage rescue in the lehigh valley caught on video. it happened in a convenience store. a man was inside a car holding a knife to another man's neck. nbc 10's doug shimell shows us what happened next from berks county. >> officers indicated when he saw them he looked panicky and at that time you never know what's going to happen. >> reporter: officers say that

panicky man threatening to kill himself inside the silver honda is 25-year-old marshall sutton. >> and when the person in the back of the car with the knife to his neck saw the police arrive, he pulled out another knife and put it to the neck of the front seat passenger. >> reporter: the passenger had blood coming from a knife wound so for muhlenberg township police, which has become a question of deadly force -- shoot or don't shoot. >> our officers correctly smashed out the back windows of the car and tried to get the person out of the car. they wound up having to tase him to stop him from cutting the front seat passenger. >> reporter: as officers tased him and dragged him from the car, others rushed to pull the passenger from the front seat. he has a cut wound to his neck but is otherwise okay. police say marshall sutvin has been jailed on there are 100,000 bail. muhlenberg township police say this was a deadly force case

that didn't happen. >> when no one is hurt, no one is shot and our officers go home safely at the end of the day, that's what training does. >> reporter: in muhlenberg township, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. family members sobbed in court as investigators revealed new details about the murders this cumberland county man is accused of committing. ree car docent yago is charged with killing his ex-girlfriend and her baby girl. prosecutors say he strangled neidy ramirez with a cord then crushed her three-month-old daughter's chest. police say santiago dumped their bodies in a wooded area in fairfield township. santiago pleaded not guilty in today's hearing. a judge then doubled his bail to $2 million. an historic policy shift today for the u.s. military. the pentagon will open all combat jobs to women 30 days from now. defense secretary ash carter announced that move today. he says our military cannot

effectively defend the nation if half of the population isn't allowed to serve in combat. >> this means as long as they qualify and meet the standards women will now be able to contribute to our mission in ways they could not before. and even more importantly, our military will be better able to harness the skills and perspectives that talented women have to offer. women will now be able to fill some 220,000 roles currently only open to men. tonight, the u.s. secret service is in crisis, that's according to a congressional oversight committee which says the agency is in worse shape than previously known. their bipartisan report reveals previously undisclosed breach and security lapses that could have engagered president obama. >> we've had a lot of people with guns near the president that the secret service didn't know had guns. how does that happen? the report blames budget cuts for leaving the agency understaffed and overworked.

tonight where senate republicans today pushed through legislation aimed at crippling the affordable care act and planned parenthood. house approval is expected in days but the president has said such legislation would be vetoed. philadelphia district attorney seth williams today reassigned three prosecutors involved in an e-mail scandal. the three are part of a group that exchanged sexually explicit and raunchy e-mails when they were working at the state attorney general's office. they now work for philadelphia's d.a. philadelphia city council is calling on williams to fire the three men investigators in delaware are trying to figure out what sparked a fire here. skyforce 10 flew over the budget motor lodge on south dupont highway. crews tried to rescue one person trapped inside but he was badly burned and died at the scene. the delaware state fire marshal's office is investigating. tonight, investigators are looking for a man who bought two rifles used in the deadly mass

shooting in san bernardino, california. police say a husband and wife killed 14 people in yesterday's rampage and investigators say they tried to cover their tracks, erasing e-mails and destroying hard drives. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal once again live in our digital operations center. randy? >> reporter: we're also learning more about what exactly police saw in the seconds after the shooting unfolded in a late-night news conference tonight. we hear from the first responders on scene. meantime, sources telling nbc news those two suspects, the husband and the wife, are under investigation for possible links to terror. with the attacks still unfolding, local police ran into the unknown. officer mike madden was the first to arrive. >> i noticed upon entry that there was a christmas tree in there, all of the tables were decorated for a christmas party. >> reporter: he saw 80 plus people, many wounded, others dying, a scene of chaos inside an office christmas party. >> it was unspeakable, the

carnage that we were seeing, the number of people who were injured and unfortunately already dead. >> reporter: we've learned 12 of the 14 victims were county employees and so was the suspect. police say syed farook turned on his colleagues and brought his wife along for the massacre. >> somebody asked "well, where's syed?" well, i didn't realize he wasn't there at the moment. i patrick bacarri used to sit across the gunman but during the attack he was too focused on helping the wounded. >> one of my good friends was shot so i tried to render her aid with what minimal equipment we had. >> reporter: photos show an arsenal of ammunition, high-powered rifles. it's clear the husband and wife came ready for an attack. but their family says it comes as a surprise. >> i have no idea why would he do that? why would he do something like this? i have absolutely no idea. i'm in shock myself. >> reporter: sources tell nbc news farook and his wife may have become radicalized.

investigators looking into their travel overseas, their possible communications with extremists but at this point in the investigation an official motive hasn't been released. live tonight again, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. the shooting in california has some in the local muslim community very concerned. we smoke to an ardmore dentist about his reaction when he heard what happened. he's worried about how his faith is perceived. >> i was horrified and i was praying, "i hope it's not a muslim. i hope it's not a pakistani." because you know when somebody kills somebody, that is so sad. but when it comes the names of muslims into it, it brings into it an ugly situation. >> reporter: fearing potential backlash, the council on american islamic relations quickly spoke out after the mass shooting condemning the attack. new jersey lawmakers failed today to override governor christie's veto of a bill dealing with guns and mental illness. christie was in washington today where he called the shootings in california an act of terrorism.

back in trenton, lawmakers fell three votes short of reversing the governor's gun-related bill veto. the bill would require police to be notified when potential gun buyers try to get rid of their mental health records. at 11:00, bedbugs in the books. several philadelphia libraries are closed because of insects like these. it's why the northeast regional branch shut its doors yesterday but chances are you didn't know about it. andrea klein thomas live outside the library where exterminators were called. >> reporter: library officials said they did not tell people about the bedbugs because they didn't want to cause alarm. but then nbc 10 started asking questions. a lot more than books are making their way into philadelphia's free public library branches. bedbugs are being found in books and other materials. library officials wouldn't give exact location but said there

have been ten incidents in the last six months. >> i find that to be scary. for me if i went in there with my kids and took it home i would like to know that they have that so i know what to do. >> reporter: the holmesburg library is the last location to close for treatment after one of the bugs was spotted. the sign on the door said the closure was due to an emergency. have patrons been notified? >> reporter: patrons have not been notified because we handled the issue quickly. >> reporter: will they be notified or that not part of your protocol? >> that's not part of our protocol. >> reporter: protocol requires employees to inspect all materials being returned. those with bedbugs are placed in this heat box and cooked at 122 degrees for an hour to decontaminate the books and prevent bedbugs from multiplying. >> i would say it's not a big problem because libraries are not places that house infestations of bedbugs. people don't sleep in libraries. >> reporter: you may remember

back in september philadelphia's 311 center had a very similar issue. city contractors are being used to exterminate the libraries. as for the holmes burlg branch, it should reopen tomorrow. reporting live from northeast philly, andrea cline-thomas. camden is reopening a speeding case against jalhlil okaf okafor. okafor's lawyer went before a judge after the municipal court rejected his client's guilty plea and fine. the sixers center admitted driving at 108 miles an hour across the ben franklin bridge back in october. his attorney says the only reason they're reopening the case is because video surfaced of okafor fighting outside a boston bar and that incident publicize it had speeding ticket. >> it's a shame that any other defendant would enter into a plea agreement and it wouldn't matter but because of who he is now he's almost becoming victimized. >> reporter: this is the video from the bar fight that happened

last week. it escalates from yelling to a brawl in the street. the 76ers suspended okafor for two games. tomorrow could be a big day in pennsylvania's budget battle. pennsylvania has been operating without a budget or five months now. governor tom wolf said today he expects a deal will be done well before christmas. pomp and circumstance after six months of intense physical and mental training for nearly two dozen police recruits in delaware. newcastle county executive tom gordon helped celebrate the graduation of these 23 recruits tonight. 16 of them will join the newcastle county police force while others will serve for delaware city, ellesmere and the delaware department of natural resources. a police chief in bucks county is retiring after more than 40 years of service. william whitman is calling it a

bill cosby's wife will answer questions under oath next month now that dozens of women have accused her husband of sexual abuse. camille cosby, who's been married to the comedian for 52 years will give a deposition next month, one month before her husband does the same. seven women are suing cosby for defamation, saying his representatives damaged their representations after they came forward with their accusations. oscar pistorius is officially a convicted murderer tonight. a south african appeals court overturned his manslaughter conviction in the death of his girlfriend today. it instead convicted him of murder. the double amputee olympian served a year in prison on the manslaughter conviction. pistorius will have to be resentenced. >> $500 just like that. it's the hottest gift of the holiday season but tonight a warping about hoverboards

that tonight. nice and dry, nice and cool outside. so really anything you want to do from now until the weekend is through we have a nice condition. nice and dry outside. the wind is dying down at the moment and this will be the case overnight tonight. that's going to let our temperatures get colder. so it will be a colder start to your day. temperatures in the up 20s north and west. mostly the 30s through the rest of the area. then a milder week end in store. wait until you see temperatures coming up for saturday and sunday. here's our temperature trend overnight. we'll drop down to the 30s around sunrise and near 50 degrees by noon so it will still be a cool day. topping out in the mid-50s. today we got to around 50. saturday near 60. sunday there could be some areas in the low 60s. so we are looking at a milder weather pattern coming back in, but at least it will stay dry. temperatures right now mid-40s through most of the area except our suburbs in new jersey and delaware already in the upper 30s. and the winds speeds have lightened up.

breezy, sustained around 10 miles an hour. we are nice and dry, though, and will stay that way into the next several days here. our wind direction, that will be continuing to bring that cooler air in overnight tonight. not as windy. tomorrow we're looking at friday afternoon, nice and dry, not as windy tomorrow, either. this big area of high pressure moving in by saturday. that will help keep the weekend dry. by sunday that high shifts off to our east. our change in wind direction will bring us milder temperatures as we go into the end of the weekend. even mild for the eagles, playing in new england. so it's going to be kind of unseasonably warm by 4:30 in the afternoon come sunday in massachusetts, mid-50s by 7:00 p.m. low temperatures will be in the mid-30s, low 30s in our new jersey suburbs, pottstown 32 degrees. allentown could get to 29 as we go into early tomorrow morning right around sun rise. so a cold start to your morning, through the afternoon, sunny, nice day, low to mid-50s.

not as windy as it was today. there you see plenty of sunshine, upper 50s saturday. low 60s sunday. next rain chance could be tuesday. we'll watch that weather system. some models keep the rain south but we'll keep an eye on it as we get closer. we do, though, stay above normal. coldplay is coming to the super bowl. the nfl made that announcement tonight. the british rock band will headline the half time show at next year's super bowl and twitter has been bombarded with reaction. let's look at a few of them now. not everyone too happy about this. "can we just sit in silence for 20 minutes instead of coldplay?" ouch. here's another one. "i wonder if coldplay will play their slow song. or their slow as long as at the super bowl half time show." others come to the defense of the choice. "totally approve of coldplay being this year's super bowl

underdogs for sunday's game in foxborough, understandable given the team's record and the patriots coming off their loss against denver but chip kelly won't use that as motivation. >> i've honestly never talked to any team i've ever been on about being an underdog or point spreads or anything like that. i don't think i've -- i've never paid attention to them. to jahlil okafor. he missed last night's game due to suspension and will miss the team's next game on saturday against the nuggets as he serves his second game of the punishment. this video released yesterday is the latest as what is being perceived as a dangerous pattern of behavior developing with the 19-year-old including the speeding incident we mentioned earlier with him on the ben franklin bridge. his college coach at duke says while this was a mistake, don't jump to conclusions about him as a person. >> he's got to be smart about that. he was not. he apologized. he's being punished. anybody who pictures that kid as some bad kid, you've got to be kidding me. he's one of the most loving,
