nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now at 11:00, was it an act of terror or workplace violence? or a mix of both. investigators continue to comb through clues recovered inside a house connected to the suspects in the california mass shooting. what does the arsenal of weapons and the technology found there reveal about a possible motive? good morning, i'm katy zachry. the investigation is expanding as authorities try and figure out a motive behind the attack. here's what we know right now. investigators are searching for a man who bought two rifles used in the shooting. they want to know if that man was acting on gunman syed farook's behalf when he searched the rifles three years ago. authorities still do not have a motive for the attack, but some

say the discovery of weapons and pipe bombs at the attacker's home possibly points to terrorism. and police have released the identity of the victims. 12 of the 14 were san bernardino county employees. many worked for the health department. the community came together last night to grieve for those 14 people killed in the attack. 21 others were injured. and now we're hearing from survivors and from the first police officers to respond to the scene. one of the victims of that deadly attack had ties to our area. nicholas falsinos worked in the county for 14 years al he resigned in 2002. he then moved to california and took a similar job there. he was inside that holiday party when the two shooters opened fire. his former colleagues in cape may county are in disbelief and his wife says he knew the gunman. >> he knew syed. he had worked with him, and he never had anything bad to say about him. >> and suddenly, we have one of

our own out there in california now that is murdered by these terrorists. >> thalasinos leaves behind two adult sons and an ex-wife who live in our area. pennsylvania governor tom wolf released a statement about the county native who died in the san bernardino shootings. he said, quote, on behalf of all pennsylvanias, we extend our condolences. he is worried about how others perceive his faith. >> i was terrified and i was praying, i hope it's not a muslim. i hope it's not a pakistani. because you know, if somebody killed somebody -- when it comes in the name of muslims into it,

it brings another picture, and it's kind of an ugly situation. >> and fearing potential backla backlash, the council on american islamic relations quickly spoke out, condemning the attack. happening today, it could be a pivotal moment in the long effort to pass a budget of pennsylvania. we could see real progress in harrisburg. we're live in the digital operations center. matt, governor tom wolf says he expects a deal before christmas. are you hearing that could actually happen? >> reporter: that would not be soon enough. pennsylvania has been going for five months without a budget. this supposed deal has been mostly secretive. not a lot of details coming out yet. this morning, governor tom wolf spoke with a radio station in pittsburgh, saying there is an agreement with republican leaders over education funding. earlier this week, he said he expected the budget to pass very soon. senators are expected to work through the weekend with voting

sessions scheduled, but today is the day that people are looking to as an important one. with house democrats expecting a closed door meeting with the governor. for now, without a budget, state services have had to borrow money, and in some cases, cut programs and workers. i'm looking at the monitor here in our digital operations center, where you can see what's going on out of harrisburg. the house has convened their session a few moments ago. my colleague lauren make will have the updates later on this afternoon. live in the digital operations center, matt did he lusha, nbc 10 news. one person is being treated for injuries following a fire in norwood, delaware county. you see the video there. you can see the flames and smoke coming from the home when sky 4's 10 was over the scene around 7:00 this morning. there is no word on the injured person's condition at this hour. and there's new information on a crash in burlington city. we first told you about it earlier this morning. police now say the crash at

route 130 northbound and tyler street happened as two thieves were trying to get away from a car dealership. police have one suspect in custody. they are still searching for the second. and two schools in northeast philadelphia were on lockdown for about 25 minutes this morning. fortunately, that lockdown at lincoln high school and the middle school has been lifted. a gun was noticed in a kid's pocket. that kid is a student at the middle school. police stopped him before he got to the building. it turned out he was carrying a bee-bee gun. police tell us they don't believe there was ever any threat to the school. a manhunt is under way this morning, just outside of baltimore. after a man shot a police officer in the face. police in aberdeen, maryland, are following leads, trying to track down the gunman. authorities say 21-year-old tyler testerman shot the officer responding to a call for suspicious activity. the officer is at the hospital now, we're told, in stable

condition. the ten-year veteran of the department will require surgery on his eye. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we know after a chilly start earlier this week, temperatures have really warmed up throughout our area. here's a live look this morning at xfinity live in south philadelphia. that's where radio host press ton and steve's camp out for hunger is coming to an end today. they had a pretty successful week. will the camp out end on a warmer note? we go to meteorologist brittney shipp. hi, brittney. >> hi, we will see warming temperatures, lots of sunshine and stay nice and dry. that will help, as well. favorable conditions for us over the next couple days. of temperature wise, we're at 49 degrees in philadelphia, 44 in pottstown, 47 in allentown. 48 in wilmington. 47 in dover. 46 degrees in wildwood and temperatures in atlantic city at 49 degrees. your city planner shows as we go into the rest of today, you'll notice our skies stay nice and clear. lots of sunshine by 1:00 p.m. temperatures at 50 degrees by

to improving education in the city. tonight's meeting is at strawberry mansion high school and begins at 7:30. the holmesburg 14 and under football team is headed to florida this morning. exciting for them. nbc 10 was at their football field at dittiman and raun earlier today. there the tigers will play in a national championship tournament over the next week. the team has been asking for donations for the trip. the city came through with $5,000, and the kids raised some of their own money by collecting their own change, and parents and coaches chipped in for the rest. >> it's a great experience for these kids. they worked hard all year. and we had a lot of fun. we'll be for a whole week. get to go to universal studios, orlando, so we'll have fun down there. get to compete with teams from around the country. >> the team is still collecting donations for food. go to nbc.com to get their go fund me page and information. well, it is a big weekend

for temple football. tomorrow at noon, the owls are taking on number 17, houston. the two teams have met four times, and all four times, houston has won. the winner of tomorrow's game is expected to go to either the peach or the fiesta bowl. of this is temple's biggest game since it lost to notre dame back in october. a holiday tradition is scheduled to take place tonight along the delaware river waterfront. and it should be an enlightening experience for everyone. nbc 10's monique braxton is live at the blue cross river rink with a preview of that enlightening experience. tell us more, monique. >> hi there. i can tell you that the final trimmings are about to be placed on the tree here. the bulbs and the lights. on the holiday tree at winter fest. nbc 10 will be hosting the official countdown and tree lighting program. our program includes the keystone boys' choir featuring bobby hill. skaters from the skate club will take to the skating rink. and arresteden theater company

this is an nbc news special report. here's natalie morales. >> and good morning. we are learning new details about the couple involved in that deadly san bernardino mass shooting, including a statement of support for isis by the female shooter, tashfeen malik. for more on this possible isis connection, let's bring in nbc's justice correspondent, pete williams, who has been working this story. pete, what can you tell us about this posting? >> reporter: natalie, several law enforcement officials have told us that just before the shooting in san bernardino, tashfeen malik posted a statement of support for the isis leader, abu bakr al baghdadi on a facebook page. they say that this facebook page was not in her name, but was in an alias. they say the posting went up and a short time later, it was taken

down. now this doesn't mean that the attack was directed by isis. it may not be any sign of that at all. but it does suggest that she was strongly committed to an isis philosophy, and, in fact, in previous attacks, many people have posted statements of support, just carrying out their attacks. and it's in a sense part of the isis playbook, to have people make these expressions of support. isis itself has never taken credit for the san bernardino shootings, and it's very possible that the isis leadership is totally unaware of this posting. because lots of people post lots of things about isis around the world every day. and they can't possibly know about them all. plus it wasn't up there very long. but it is something that the fbi has uncovered as they go through the electronic devices, the e-mails, the phone calls, the social media postings of this couple, looking for any kind of clue about what drove them to do

it. isis has been a main concern of the u.s. through just this sort of radicalization. not directed plots, but people who follow isis propaganda through their relentless outpouring of propaganda around the world every day. much of it in english, much of it in the native languages of these two. and that's been the fear, that isis will say to people, wherever you are, go out and kill whoever you can. so it certainly pushes this investigation much more in the direction of a terror attack. >> and pete, what are investigators doing now to find out more about her background? >> reporter: well, the fbi has legal attaches in islambad to learn more about her. she is from pakistan. he has said -- syed farook has said he met her online in an online dating service and then went to saudi arabia while he was on the religious haj, met her in person and brought her

yesterday. we're right in the middle of a very gradual warming trend. so we'll still see chilly conditions as we head into the rest of tonight. temperatures dropping into the mid 40s by the time you get off work and heading out for your friday night plans, a dry stretch in store for us. we're not tracking our next chance of rain until we head into next weekend. i'm also tracking milder conditions as we head into the weekend. for philadelphia, 49 degrees, lots of sunshine. cooler side. our feels like temperature closer to 46 degrees. wind speeds out of the west at 7 miles per hour. humidity is at 48%. across the rest of the region, we're at 49 degrees in northeast philly, 49 in atlantic city. 47 degrees in dover. 44 in pottstown. still in the 30s in the poconos, just at 38 degrees. your satellite radar shot shows that we're seeing quiet conditions. you'll notice a few clouds starting to push into parts of the poconos in the lehigh valley. but everywhere else seeing lots of sunshine. as i widen out the picture, we have high pressure in control. so it's really a quiet weather pattern for most of the nation.

so we're not tracking any storms over the next couple of days. we should stay nice and dry as high pressure stays in control. in fact, this area of high pressure is going to slide closer to us as we get into the weekend. so we will see milder conditions right as we push into saturday and sunday. so that's good timing for a warming trend. so it's been a mild start to december. today our temperatures will get into the mid 50s. 54 degrees for philadelphia. on saturday, 58. and as we head into sunday, it's possible that we'll see temperatures closer to the low 60s. our average for this time of year, 49 degrees. so we will head well above average. our highs around the region, 54 for philadelphia. cooler in allentown at 50 degrees. 51 in northeast philly, cool, but staying nice and dry. our future temperatures show as we go into the rest of tonight, we'll help you plan your friday evening. temperatures will be closer to the mid 40s for philadelphia, right around 6:00 p.m. 4 4 degrees and trenton 42. and as we wake up tomorrow morning, 6:00 a.m., in the mid

and neck cancer, started on my tonsils. went down my throat and into the lymph nodes on the right side of my neck. >> so you received aggressive treatment at jefferson right here in center city. and then when were you cancer-free? >> november 11 slth, 2010. so i just celebrated five years. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> and you were telling me before we came live, it was while you were waiting in the waiting room, really, during one of your procedures that you thought about starting this charity to help families who were struggling with the costs of day to day expenses, because all of the money is going to medical costs. >> exactly. the idea came. the prognosis wasn't great and i wanted to start something that my nieces and nephews would be proud of and started thinking about the foundation and how to give back to other families going through a cancer diagnosis. >> all right. and i just want to draw recognition. so in -- and i'm going to have to read the prompter, because i want to get it right. you were named the 2015 hero of hope at the academy of oncology

this is nbc 10 news. >> a fire bomb attack on a nightclub in cairo killed 16 people and injured three others early this morning. police are searching for two young men who they believe threw molotov cocktails at the entrance after they were denied entry into the bar. this video of the aftermath of the attack was posted online and you can see flames and smoke billowing from the doors and windows of that nightclub. a cafe in paris is now back open for business this morning.

three weeks after gunmen killed five people there and injured three others. the cafe was one of several venues in paris targeted during the terror attacks on november 13th. a total of 130 people were killed. the business's owner says the cafe has been repainted and redecorated to erase the signs of the nightmare. and former stone temple pilots front man scott weiland is dead at 48 years old. his manager says the singer died in his sleep and was found on his tour bus in mn. one of the bands last shows was in the poconos one week ago. weiland was once lead singer for velvet recover. while his cause of death is unkno unknown, he had well documented struggles with heroin, cocaine and alcohol. george zimmerman's twitter account has been suspended. twitter says zimmerman posted semi nude pictures, along with

contact information of an ex girlfriend. twitter has a policy banning, quote, revenge porn." and the postings of confidential information. zimmerman is most known for his acquitt acquittal in the 2012 shooting death of trayvon martin. what caused them to kill? this morning, the search for clues to a motive continues in california. we will have another update on the investigation into the san bernardino mass shooting ahead in our next half hour. and as the california shooting serves a new debate about guns, a series of holiday billboards are causing controversy. where it is and what's on them.

just before she and her husband shot and killed 14 people. officials say malik posted the statement on facebook wednesday before the shootings and then it was quickly taken down. now investigators are looking into whether she may have radicalized her husband. syed farook. both shooters were killed by police several hours after the attack. ♪ >> as this grieving city gathered overnight -- ♪ we also heard for the first time from those who rushed toward the gunfire. >> the smell of fun powder in the air. >> lieutenant mike madden was one of the first officers inside the inland regional center the morning of the attack. >> it was unspeakable, the carnage we were seeing, the number of people who were injured. and unfortunately, already dead. and the pure panic on the face of those individuals. >> reporter: carnage that police and federal agents say was a military style attack. carried out by syed farook and tashfeen malik.

>> this took days, weeks, if not months to plan out. there's nothing impulsive about this shooting at all. >> reporter: investigators continue to pour over evidence where according to federal officials there is evidence that farook had been, quote, talking with people in the u.s. and overseas during the past year who showed an interest in radical jihad. but nbc news has learned the couple tried to cover their digital footprint, destroying computer hard drives and cell phones prior to carrying out the mass shooting. and as investigators try to understand why, so does farook's family. his brother-in-law sat down overnight with nbc's lester holt. >> did somebody brain wash him? >> reporter: and why would the couple choose to carry out this attack and leave behind their 6-month-old daughter? >> god gives you a gift of a daughter. and you left that kid behind. what did you achieve? i don't know what message they have left.

>> reporter: questions and grief that still fill this tight-knit community. jay gray, nbc news. name and on the day after the california shooting, new jersey lawmakers came up short in their attempt to override governor chris christie's veto of a gun bill dealing with mental illness. the bill would require police to be notified when potential gun buyers try to erase their records. christie won support from republican primary voters in the presidential race. and governor christie is campaigning in iowa this morning, right off the top of his speech he talked about the shooting in california and terror attacks around the world. he said making sure americans are safe should be the country's top priority. as nbc's halle jackson reports, the shooting has become front and center on the campaign trail, intensifying an already heated debate among candidates and voters over terror and gun control. >> it's becoming clearer that we

are dealing with an act of terrorism. >> reporter: for hillary clinton, a rare consensus with some republican rivals with more and more information coming out about the san bernardino shooters. for some, the rhetoric rising. >> radical islamic terrorism and i'll tell you what. we have a president that refuses to use the term. he refuses to say it. there's something going on with him that we don't know about. >> reporter: donald trump, far from the only republican making an early link to islam and terror. >> all of us are deeply concerned that this is yet another manifestation of terrorism. radical islamic terrorism here at home. >> we need to come to grips with the idea that we are in the midst of the next world war. >> reporter: but as gop candidates talk terrorism -- >> i'm convinced it was a terrorist attack. >> reporter: democrats demand more gun control. >> we cannot go on with losing

90 people a day to gun violence. >> reporter: clinton, pushing for stricter gun laws, as the white house has pushed on how president obama's gun proposals would have stopped san bernardino. >> we don't need to conduct an investigation to determine that a common sense thing like preventing an individual who is on the no fly list from being able to buy a gun would actually make all of us safer. >> reporter: republicans pouncing. do you think the shooting in california is about gun control, then you don't understand what's going on in the world. >> reporter: graham's comments coming on a forum of jewish republicans attended by all gop tenants. for trump, things turning combative. >> you're not going to support me because i don't want your money. >> reporter: the front runner booed to his response as to whether jerusalem should be the capital of israel. >> i want to wait -- i'm leaving for israel in a short period of time. [ booing ] >> i know what you're saying. >> reporter: and ben carson again seemed to strug on foreign policy here, raising eyebrows

with the mispronunciation of the extremists hamas. >> fatah and hamas operate in a constant state of conflict. >> and that was nbc's halle jackson reporting. now this billboard in north carolina is getting a lot of attention. as you can see, it shows santa claus looking down the barrel of an assault-style rifle. the billboard in charlotte says santa knows what you really want and it's getting mixed reactions, as you would expect. >> i have to say in general to each their own. i mean, it doesn't appeal to me. >> i just think it's promoting something that we don't want to promote. >> the store manager said he thought the ad would be amusing and that customers would get a kick out of it. a store in south carolina is also using the christmas holiday to sell guns. this billboard says, "five golden rings" and shows bullets in a gun.

that's a take on the 12 days of christmas. another says silent night and shows a gun with a silencer. some people are offended saying the ads are inappropriate. but the store says others say they appreciate the humor. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> switching gears now, we got off to a cool start this morning, but temperatures are on the rise. they're warming up. here's a live look at boat house row in center city, philly. is it going to stay as warm? first alert meteorologist brittney shipp has the answer. >> hi, we're actually going to warm things up as we go into the rest of tomorrow and also into sunday. of temperatures could hit the 60s by sunday. so a more mild weekend is on tap for us. right now we're at 46 degrees in reading. 45 in coatesville. 4 in pottstown. temperatures in allentown 47 degrees. 48 in blue bell. warming up nicely, close to 50 degrees in wilmington. same for philadelphia.

northeast at 50 degrees. 48 in mt. holly and along the shore, temperatures for lewis at 46 degrees. and we're at 47 in dover. our satellite radar shot shows a quiet weather pattern setting up for us. high pressure in control. so even as i widen out the picture, you'll notice we're noting any storms over the next couple days. quiet conditions expected for us right through the weekend. and even into the start of next week. as far as today is concerned, our temperatures will be a little bit above average. our average for this time of year, 49 degrees. today will range between 51 and 54 degrees with mostly sunny skies expected. we will have a chilly night ahead, and that's going to give way to a cold saturday morning. but by 6:00 p.m. tonight, temperatures will drop quickly into the mid 40s. 44 degrees in wilmington. 42. and by 10:00, 11:00 p.m., temperatures will be in the 30s. so keep that in mind as you're making your plans for tonight. go over more details into the weekend. katie? >> thanks, brittney.

a two-game suspension for okafor does not mean the rookie center is going away any time soon. the city of camden has rejected okaf okafor's guilty plea for a speeding incident and reopened his case. his lawyer went before a judge yesterday. the municipal court rejected his guilty plea and fine. he admitted to driver 108 miles per hour across the ben franklin bridge in october. his attorney says the only reason the case is being reopened is because video surfaced of okafor fighting outside a boston bar last week, and that incident publicized the october speeding ticket. >> it's a shame that any other defendant would come in and be able to enter into a plea agreement, and it wouldn't matter. but because of who he is, now he's almost becoming victimized. >> this is video from the bar fight in boston that happened last week. the team superstar was assigned a security guard and he was suspended for two games. that suspension ends on tuesday.

the pennsylvania turnpike commission is warning drivers about a closure happening early sunday morning. an 11-mile stretch of the northeast extension of the turnpike will be shut down in both directions between the mid county toll plaza and exit 31. you won't be able to use that section of highway from midnight

to 6:00 a.m. sunday morning. a loyal pitbull that stood over her injured owner during a house fire in maryland now has a new home. the prince georges county animal shelter said precious, the dog's name, could not be returned to the owner because pitbulls are banned in that county. the dog is staying with the owner's sister who lives in another county. the owner and father were taken to a hospital after the fire. both are expected to be okay. well, it's an age-old tradition. children going to the mall and posing for a picture on santa's lap. but what happens when a child does not want to? well, you get a picture like this. braden dealy has autism and when he refused to sit on santa's lap, santa got down at braden's level to play. it happened at an event called caring santa. it gives autistic children some one-on-one time with santa claus. how sweet. well, one philadelphia eagle

next couple days. you will notice we'll stay nice and dry. high pressure in control throughout most of the country. most of the nation is under this ridge of high pressure. and that area of high pressure is going to shift closer to us, so we'll stay nice and dry. start to warm up even more as this area of high pressure gets closer to us, heading into saturday and sunday. so milder conditions expected for us right into the weekend. here's how your temperatures will play out. our average for this time of year is 49. so we were close to the average yesterday. but as we head today, 54 degrees by saturday. up to the high 50s and even the low 60s on sunday. highs around the region today will make it into mainly the 50s. 54 degrees in had philadelphia. just 50 for wilmington. same for dover and atlantic city. for the eagles game on the patriots away on sunday, right around 4:25, our temperatures will be in the 50s in boston. 50 degrees by 7:30. so dry and cool. seven-day forecast shows that we'll see of sunshine today,
