back. katy zachry is watching your traffic. >> good monday morning. things are looking pretty good on the roads despite overnight construction. drive times on 95 southbound looking good. 76 eastbound headed into center city philadelphia from the blue route the same. and then 476, the blue route between 95 and 76 no problems to report there. the one issue we're following is the vine street expressway is closed between 76 and 95 in both directions, that should lift in about an hour or so. it's part of an overnight project ongoing for several weeks. moving into new jersey, a look at drive times on the 42 freeway northbound between 55 and the walt whitman bridge about four minutes. and the construction on 42 and 295 it's not tying anything up. >> thanks so much, katy. don't give in to fear. that's president obama's message to america in the wake of the san bernardino shootings.

last night the president addressed the nation on the threat of terror at home and the war on terror overseas. he said the murders in california took a married couple down the road of extremism. according to authorities the female shooter pledged allegiance to isis on facebook. the president called the nation's response to extremism part of a greater fight that began on 9/11. >> many americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure. well, here's what i want you to know. the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. >> president obama offered no new policies, he did defend his strategy to fight isis as part of an international coalition. house speaker paul ryan offered the republican response to the president's address, ryan called the speech disappointing, he said president obama offered a hatch hearted attempt to distract from a failing policy. ryan said until we hear from the

president what more can be done, we will remain one step behind our enemy. >> we have new information on the female suspect. tashfeen malik spent five years in pakistan. officials tell nbc news that they found no ling between malik and extremists. malik and her husband died in a shoot-out with police after last week's attack. we'll have more details on this in a report coming up from pakistan at 4:45. in our area, two people including a firefighter are in the hospital after flames spread through a philadelphia row home. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at the scene in the point breeze neighborhood. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the good news is the injuries are not life threatening. on the 2300 block of moore street. it happened about 12:30 this morning. most of the damage you see there is on the second floor.

take a look at some video, the injured firefighter receiving oxygen in the back of an ambulance. this happened early, early this morning, there were heavy flames and smoke when the firefighters showed up. everyone didmake it out of the house safely and there was a woman taken to the hospital as well. she had minor injuries. the fire marshal left the scene about a half hour ago and still investigating the official cause of this fire, as soon as we get more we'll be sure to pass that along. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." it is the talk of philadelphia today after losing three in a row the eagles walk away with a big win in new england upsetting the defending super bowl champs. the game started with the patriots taking a 14-0 lead. the birds battled back. the eagles scored 35 unanswered points, five straight touchdowns, including a 99-yard interception return.

one will be aboard the battleship new jersey. it shelled targets on islands in the pacific during world war ii. another commemoration will be today at the valley forge chapel of the four fathers. >> the pennsylvania senate could vote this morning on a pension issue related to the five-month long budget battle in harrisburg. no deal yet. the senate will decide whether to reform the state's two pension programs. the senate and house members worked through the weekend. republicans are pushing a budget plan. democrats including tom wolf say they are committed to an earlier deal that involves hikes in overall spending and more aid to public schools. eight minutes after 4:00. we're getting a frosty start this morning, the temperatures for much of the area have dropped below freezing and some areas of fog, too, with a few clouds over the area.

but the clouds will be clearing, will becoming sunny with bright sunshine later which will warm things up. 33 now in mount pocono, trenton 35 and wilmington equals from the mountains, a light breeze blowing, nothing strong for most of the area. the wind is calm. it's cold enough on its own. with temperatures coming down, a little fog forming. light fog in reading with visibility under a mile, 2 1/2 mile visibility in northeast philadelphia, but look at millville, atlantic city at the airport, quarter mile visibility. thick fog for some areas and the chill that's in the area. but these clouds are moving out of the area. we will see plenty of sunshine so you'll need your sunglasses and even though you need to bundle up this morning if you're heading out the door it's going to be a pretty good warm-up. 48 degrees for the pocono mountains in the 50s for allentown and reading. we'll start with clouds and areas of fog trenton and mount

today the philadelphia school district will release the results of a report that impacts thousands of students. the group public citizens for children and youth along with superintendent dr. william hyatt will be releasing the high school report that examines the resources, opportunities and challenges for the 55,000 teens in philadelphia's public high schools. officials say the findings will help them increase performance and outcomes for students. also today the school reform commission will hold the first of two public hearings. there are 13 applications for new schools. the hearing is 3:30 this afternoon at the education center on north broad street. you do have to sign up to speak for this so if you are interested you may want to get there early. >> take a look at this video of a smash and grab robbery at a

california mall. this shows one of three masked men using a sledgehammer to smash a case at a jewelry store. you can see the frightened shoppers running i a way. people say they heard gun shots but police say there was never an active shooter. >> something sinister may be happening on your front porch and stealing some of the joy the holiday season is supposed to bring. chris clackum has more on the uptick in package thefts and what you can do. >> reporter: they have become as brazen as the season is bright. porch pirates as they are called, stealing packages right outside your front door. and with it a bit of holiday cheer. >> in the video you can see very nonchalant walks up takes it. >> reporter: 23 million had their packages stolen. a number expected to really rise. >> we've got record online

in other news, the university of houston is ending its contract with the security company after this video. watch as one of the guards appears to rough up a fan as he tries to storm the field. this happened after houston beat temple on saturday. then a second guard comes over and hits the fan a number of times in the head. the university's police department is now investigating. >> back in our area, an ugly message about police is gone thanks to one man, he stepped up to cover up graffiti calling on people to kill police. for weeks drivers passed the anti-police graffiti on i-95 on an overpass in chester but nobody did anything about it until now. >> for the the city of chester. >> pat own as landscaping company. he was on the job when he passed this graffiti announcing it's cop killing season. when he saw it again he took matters into his own hand.

this video he posted shows him wiping out the graffiti with white paint. as an added touch he put up these paintings of smiling snowmen. >> they have a hard job to do and they are trying to keep us safe. if the it's the season for anything it's the season for christmas, it's not a season for killing anybody let alone police. >> the chester police commissioner tells us that he had seen the graffiti and he's glad that it's now covered up. skies are clear this morning and it is chilly outside. the temperatures have been coming down and are going to stay lower during most of the morning. some areas of fog, too, right now it's 37 degrees in philadelphia. but the suburbs are in the 20s. 27 in pottstown, right at the freezing mark for blue bell and lafayette hill. and farther north and west, collegeville is at 27 degrees and falling and 20s for

the road. rosemary was not allowed on the road. construction crews are here so they blocked it off between 76 and 95 while they do construction. it should lift in about 40 minutes. i'll let you know so you can make your way on the vine street expressway. taking a live look, my camera -- there we go. there is construction that lifted, so this is on 95 northbound, there was overnight construction between bartram avenue and 291 which is otherwise the philadelphia international airport so if you are headed north on 95 that is free and clear of issues right now. a look at drive times, 95 good up between woodhaven, cottman, girard, allegheny. 76 into center city philadelphia clear of issues. the blue route is looking good as well. >> two more catholic churches are closing. the archdiocese of philadelphia says maintenance costs are too steep.

over the weekend the archdiocese announced that immaculate conception in levittown will no longer serve as a worship site and will close. st. gertrude in west conshohocken will also close. it's a site for st. matthew. ♪ >> the national menorah lights up the night sky in washington, d.c. the first candle was lit last night. it marks the ancient victory over the occupation of jerusalem. there was only enough lamp oil for one night but lasted for eight. the first candle on this 40-foot high menorah is aglow marking the start of hanukkah. it began last night at sundown. hanukkah traditions include prayers, song, special gifts, food, of course the game of dreidel.

the time 4:21. hundreds of miles, thousands of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of wreath. an effort to honor our fallen service men and women during the holiday season is under way. volunteers with wreaths all across america are making their way from maine to arlington national cemetery we truck loads of wreaths. they took off yesterday with an escort of police and firemen. volunteers have events and special ceremonies to honor those who serve and to teach children about the sacrifices that our veterans and their families make every day. one volunteer is the father of a fallen soldier in iraq. he says this is his special way to honor his son and his comrades. >> giving back to the people that have fought for our freedom to be able to take these wreaths down there and put them on the stones. >> 40,000 volunteers are expected to arrive at arlington on saturday to lay the wreaths on the soldiers' graves.
