down on his muslim migration proposal, despite all this backlash. >> the proposal comes following the terrorist attacks in san bernardino. mayor michael nutter is standing with local muslim leaders talking about the impact of anti-muslim sentiment here in philadelphia. harry hairston is at this news conference and will bring us a live report. nbc 10 has team coverage following the reaction to trump's comments from local politicians and people of muslim faith. we begin with keith jones in the digital operations center with more on the comment that has sparked outrage. keith? >> jackie, trump says the country has no choice but to deny muslims entry into america and today defended that stance on msnbc. >> i wouldn't want to engage the muslim community, but the muslim community has to help us, they are not helping us. the muslim community is not reporting what's going on. they should be reporting that their next door neighbor is making pipe bombs and they have

angered by trump's comment, many residents are condemning the proposal and the white house says trump's comments, quote, disqualify him from serving as president. even harry potter author j.k. rawlings chiming in on twitter calling trump worse than her fictional villain lord voldemort. already dealing with backlash against muslims. >> someone threw a pig's head at a local mosque yesterday. surveillance video shows one in this car throwing the pig's head at the front door of the mosque in north philadelphia. the pig is seen as an insult, since muslim laws forbid the eating of pork. the fbi is now investigating. between that and trump's comments last night, local muslims tell nbc 10 they are getting more and more scared. >> nbc 10's lauren mayk was out in the community today. people say they are living with a growing fear now.

lauren, tell us about it. >> yeah, there is a real sense things have ratcheted up, especially after what happened here. one woman told me it is getting scary and it is women who wear the traditional hijab head scarf who are more visible as muslims, so today there are daughters, moms, and sisters getting a little extra attention and worry. the video is hard to make out, but shocking just the same, a pig's head plopped in front of a mosque. >> i'm not sure how to take it. >> reporter: it's hard for her to believe it happened here. >> my roommate told me about it last night, she's nonmuslim. she's like be a little bit careful, be safe. >> reporter: for women like her, the warning comes with the knowledge she stands out. >> from first look you can't tell, but my sister and mom wear the head scarf. >> reporter: he keeps an eye out for his sister in the city. >> i've been keeping up with her a bit more recently, making sure

news we are following in the past hour, a jury found the police officer not guilty, an officer seen in this video kicking a man in the head. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong joins us live from outside the courthouse with more. tim? >> reporter: jacqueline, the word i keep hearing here is surprise, people saying that on the way out of the courtroom. they believe the video evidence against the officer was clear. take a look at the video, thomas webster kicking a has been in the head, lateef dickerson had gotten on the ground as ordered, but you see webster still kicks him in the head, dickerson was knocked unconscious and had a broken jaw. a first grand jury chose not to indict webster, but in the midst of so many other episodes of racial tension around the country decided to send it to a second grand jury. webster was indicted and charged with felony assault. the defense was he needed to use that level of force, the jury

including two black and one hispanic woman ultimately sided with webster. his lawyer said it's all in how you see that video. >> fact of the matter is, is that when you broke it down into milliseconds, you could see the gentleman moving his hands up and down and we all know tom was in fear. >> for me, i don't have a response to this, because it's beyond belief. i don't know how a jury in this community, 12 people, could reach that decision. the wheels of justice turned, regardless of how wretched we might think they are. as a community we're clearly not happy with this. >> reporter: now the head of the naacp clearly disappointed but says he believes the vast majority of dover police officers are good people. he also said he doesn't expect any unrest in dover tonight. he said the naacp will have a calculated response he says will focus more on african-american dollars and votes moving forward. dover police just sent me a

statement a short while ago. they say they respect the jury's decision, they are going to be doing their own evaluation as to webster's future with the dover police department. that's where we're live tonight in dover, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> all right, tim. happening right now, the board of trustees at temple university has put off a vote on the next step for a proposed $100 million stadium at the campus in north philadelphia. aundrea cline-thomas just letting us know that vote was deferred so mayor-elect jim kenney could weigh in on the plan that trustees say they'll meet with him and also want to engage all aspects of the community. here's the area temple says they are considering for the new stadium between 15th and broad. right now the owls play their home games at lincoln financial field. the stadium on campus would give temple athletics a big boost, but some neighbors are worried about the changes and aundrea cline-thomas has more on the proposal and the concerns now. >> reporter: as you can see behind me, dozens have gathered,

students here have advocated for the increase of the minimum wage to $15, they are joining residents in the north philadelphia community and say both issues are related. today the trustees are expected to vote on essentially getting the ball rolling on a $100 million football stadium. this discussion comes on the heels of the football team's record breaking season and invitation to a bowl game. the school president has argued that the momentum and improving the game day experience is some reasons why a stadium is necessary, not to mention the jobs expected to be created. but students, staff, and some neighbors are saying not so fast. the noise, lack of parking for fans and overall disruption to the north philadelphia neighborhood that's already having to put up with temple's sprawl should have school reconsidering the option. >> there's concerns it would displace people, people have been displaced for years and years now because of temple, and temple is intentionally vague about the plans for where the

also wildwood, 44 in allentown and in lancaster. so the temperatures fairly uniform and they are about four to eight degrees cooler than at this time yesterday, but still above average for this time of the year. we have some clouds that have come across from west to east, but this is the satellite and radar, so there is no rain associated with any of those clouds. as we go through the night tonight, temperature doesn't drop a whole lot. a little bit more than it did last night, because it won't be as cloudy. 41 degrees by 10:00. we'll talk more about just how warm it's going to get and how long it's going to stay that way with the seven day in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. police have wrapped up their investigation into a reported sexual assault at kutztown university. they say the accuser made it up. they were investigating assault near the baseball field and now it sent out a second e-mail

saying the investigation revealed it was a false report and the school is dealing with the person who filed that report. a smoke detector saved seven people's lives today. that alarm alerted residents just in time at hvih5:30 in a filled with flames. you can see the damage to three row homes from this daylight video just a few hours after the fire started. crews say this is exactly the type of blaze that can turn deadly. >> i woke up my girls, get out, get out, it's a fire. it's a fire. then my girls jump out of the bed. opened my son's door, it was up front. >> fire crews say there were minor injuries from the fire but everyone is expected to be okay. one person was killed in a crash this morning in philadelphia's east falls neighborhood. that accident happened just before 7:30 at fox street. several cars were involved. investigators are trying to find out what caused that crash. a home invasion last night ended with the intruder shot dead.

all started around 11:30 last night when a man walked through the front door in philadelphia's lawncrest neighborhood. police say he had a gun and tried to rob the place, but the home owner shot and killed him. police found drugs, hundreds of dollars, and packaging materials at the home. police haven't said if anyone will face charges. now to new information on the trial of an aide to pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane. today that aide was convicted of criminal contempt. a judge found he snooped through office e-mails in violation of a protective order, facing up to six months in jail. he's kathleen kane's driver and body guard. prosecutors say he went through computer files to take tabs on the criminal investigation of his boss. kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury information to the media, then lying about it under oath. all right, now to our eagles

on the atlantic city expressway. ratings recommends a toll increase after 50 cents, but the proposed toll hike wouldn't go into effect until about three more years. downturn led to fewer drivers on the road. a spokesperson for the transportation authority wouldn't say whether or not a toll increase will happen in the future. from our jersey shore bureau, progress in the plan to bring new life to the old showboat casino. a bill eliminating restrictions on how showboat could be used is moving through the new jersey state legislature. the senate passed it monday. stockton university bought the casino last year, but legal restrictions prevented the school from using the building as a satellite campus. a new addition is coming to the center city skyline. developers today broke ground on 1213 walnut. here's what it's expected to look like once completed. the 26-story luxury apartment tower will be in washington square west. and heads-up, literally,

of murdering his girlfriend, overturning a lower court's conviction of a lesser crime. the bands performing in paris during the isis attack last month paid their respects outside the bataclan theater today. the eagles of death metal were emotional as they laid flowers at the memorial and read messages left for loved ones. at least 89 people were killed inside. the band made an appearance yesterday at a u2 concert, their first time on stage since the attack. eagles of death metal said after the shootings they want to be the first performers when the bataclan reopens. pope francis opened the bronze holy door today, marking the start of the jubilee of her see. upwards of 10 million pilgrims will pass through the doorway in the coming year. francis launched the 12-month jubilee to emphasize the merciful and welcoming side of the catholic church. under the theme of mercy, the pope says priests can absolve women who have had abortions. ♪

the pope walked through the door after leading the jubilee of mercy mass today. thousands gathered outside as the pope celebrated the start of the holy year. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, if it felt cold outside today, it's probably because we have been spoiled with the mild weather we've been seeing in november and into december. today's actually going to be the coldest day of the week. it's just going up in the temperature department from here on and the 60s are going to be returning. and it looks like we're going to be seeing some record warm temperatures over the weekend in much of the area. we have a lot of clouds around right now, but there's nothing on the radar. so there will be no rain with this. 49 degrees, no wind, and 6 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday, so we have seen a bit of a chill, but the

temperatures going up tomorrow, then up some more on thursday, then up more on friday, then up some more on saturday. that trend just keeps going. so in a couple of days, these temperatures are not going to be around during the afternoon. it's going to be way higher than that. 45 in coatesville, pottstown, quakertown now, 44 in allentown and doylestown. not much wind, as you can see the direction is pretty much out of the north. 47 in swedesboro. ricetown, mount holly, once again, we have the land breeze today and so it's the same temperature at beach haven as it is in many places inland. so over the night tonight, we drop down to 37 in philadelphia, 28 in allentown, the clouds helping to keep the temperature up, plus the atmosphere is just warming up. so it only goes down to 33 in

reading and 32 in millville, which is way above average for this time of the year. the first week of december, 6.4 degrees above average in philadelphia. pretty close to that for the rest of the area, and by this time next week, those numbers are going to be even higher because we've got exceptional warmth coming by comparison to the averages. we've had some clouds coming across, but there's no precipitation. and you can see things are fairly quiet. and they are going to stay quiet. the mild weather, that's just going to keep building up day after day after day. not indefinitely, but through the weekend and into early next week at least. partly cloudy and chilly, 37 for the low in the city, 28 north and west. during the day tomorrow, we expect a lot of clouds around, relatively mild. temperatures in the low to mid 50s. and the seven day forecast near

check this out, philadelphia police say this man went up to the front door of a home on aspen street sunday night, removed the wreath and took off without a trace. if you recognize him, as always, police want to hear from you. a georgia mother put an ad on craigslist to get her 14-year-old daughter a real live baby. the mother placed the ad in the baby and kids section titled "home for your newborn baby." investigators say the 14 year old had everything all ready to go. the mother has been arrested and ad has been removed. an alligator attacked and killed a burglary suspect. they say they searched an area looking for two burglars but did not find the suspect. ten days later they found the body of one of the men in a nearby lake. officials tracked a nearby gator and found another man was dead inside the alligator's stomach. lawyers representing the seven women suing bill cosby

texting while driving isn't the only danger behind the wheel. nearly 30% of drivers admit to surfing the internet while they are supposed to be steering their cars. that's according to a new report from state farm. the report also found that 21% of drivers are reading facebook or twitter and more than one-third are texting while driving, a number that stayed constant for several years now. big changes coming to the way your car's safety rating is determined. >> the government wants advances in technology to be reflected in ratings and that will change how your car's evaluated. the national highway traffic safety administration says it will use more human-like crash dummies when it rates cars. the new ratings system will also rate how well the car protects a pedestrian on the road when he or she is struck by a car. they'll also revamp the crash

district is not paying them what it promised. >> this as the nbc 10 investigators found the administrators getting more money. mitch blacher has been tracking it for months. mitch? >> well, we're talking about some of the lowest paid emplo e employees within the philadelphia school district. they said from the start they were only asking for what they were promised. >> this is a hard thing to go through and upsets me every day. >> reporter: brandi thomas cleans philadelphia schools every day. she does it for her daughter. >> look at this smile. she doesn't know i'm in a struggle. >> reporter: school cleaners like thomas were offered $12.51 an hour, but they were told a mistake and would be paid $9.51 an hour. >> what's this do to your family? >> i have a son in college, he needs things, can't pay rent, trying to do this. not making it. >> i'm hanging in, doing the best i can. it's a struggle. >> reporter: at 9.51 an hour

they are no longer earning a living wage in philadelphia. an analysis found the living wage is $11.59 an hour. >> absolutely made a mistake. it was a mistake when they were hired and the h.r. office were given a different salary. >> reporter: while the district admits the initial offer letters were wrong, a spokesman said no one has been fired or disciplined for the mistake. >> we are in conversations with the labor folks to figure out is there anything we can do. >> reporter: the district would have to come up with nearly $350,000 to live up to what was originally offered. the nbc 10 investigators found since last summer the district gave some administrators either a bonus or a raise. one assistant superintendent got a $15,000 pay increase. superintendent height was given a $30,000 raise. >> the increase in the wage of individuals is based on their job and it's based on them taking other jobs. >> it's a slap in the face. >> reporter: ernie bennett is a

junior rep for the school cleaners. the nbc 10 investigators learned the union contract with the district says school cleaner pay starts at $9.51 an hour and builds to $12.51 an hour after three years. the union says the district made the mistake and it should own it. does the union have any responsibility for what's happened? >> it's our responsibility to try to adhere to the best interest of the members and collective bargaining agreements that we make. >> reporter: the school cleaners want what they were offered. >> i hope things get better, i really do. if not, they are going to lose a lot of good workers. >> reporter: some like brandi thomas left jobs that pay more than they were making now. >> it's in writing, has your signature on it, this is what you offered me. >> reporter: school officials say they don't want the school cleaners to quit over this issue, it could end up costing more to hire new school cleaners, as much as it would be to give them that $12.51.

for the investigators, mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, we continue this streak of above average days, even though today's the coldest day of the week, still three degrees above average overall. a high temperature 50 degrees, average high is 47. the 60s are going to be returning, though. average high 47, we're talking 60s. and we're also talking record warmth as we go into the weekend. i think some records are going to be broken. beautiful sunset across the area right now. 49 degrees, the wind dead calm, six degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. the temperature 44 in allentown, lancaster, 45 in mount holly and pottstown, 46 in westchester and in glassboro. also atlantic city international. 47 degrees in millville.

48 degrees in dover. these temperatures are close to average for this time of the year, but a little bit higher. and we have a land breeze, so it's 47 at beach haven, 48 right at atlantic city marina, so just about as warm as it is inland. same thing with cape may and lewes, as well. wind direction, of course, very, very critical to the shore. as we go into the night tonight, these temperatures close to average, little bit above again. 32 in pottstown, 28 in allentown, 32 in millville, 34 atlantic stay. yeah, it's just going to keep getting warmer. 50 for the high today. 54, then 60, then 63, and then even warmer over the weekend. here's some high clouds streaming by. that's one of the reasons the sunset is so beautiful. you need at least some clouds out. here's more clouds coming across the area tonight, preventing it from getting too cold.

speaking of not too cold, the army/navy game on saturday, that kickoff 66 degrees. dropping to a mere 58 by the fourth quarter. and if you think that's warm, how about the eagles game on sunday? 67 degrees by the fourth quarter. starting off at 64. yes, this is the middle of december coming up. amazing. partly cloudy and chilly overnight, 37 for the low in philadelphia, 28 north and west. during the day tomorrow, well, we've got a lot of clouds coming in. saw those clouds back on the satellite picture, but no rain associated with them. and it will keep the temperature from getting into the upper 60s, so we're talking low to mid 60s, 50s, and not very windy. then we get up to 60 on thursday. 63 on friday. 66 saturday.

breaking news about an e-mail scandal in harrisburg. four ethics charges against state supreme court justice michael eakin, saying eakin violated codes of conduct by exchanging lewd and offensive e-mails with friends. the charges were filed with a disciplinary court that has the power to remove judges. the investigation began after attorney general kathleen kane submitted more than 1,000 of eakin's e-mails. kane claims her problems started after releasing those e-mails. well, it's the off-season, of course, at the jersey shore on land, but that is not the case in the water. >> no, boaters are spotting humpback whales very close to the beaches and these spectacular videos prove it. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg has more on what is enticing them.
