nbc 10 news starts now. a drug case turns into a police chase with a driver trying to hit officers. good evening, everyone, i'm jim rosenfield. >> i'm jacqueline london. skyforce 10 was above the scene. no police officers were injured but their cars were banged up. >> nbc 10's andrea klein thomas reports from may fair. >> reporter: the chase covers three blocks of torresdale avenue and ended right behind me near raun street. police say it all started when narcotics officers witnessed a drug transaction and tried to make an arrest. that's when police say this black mercury grand marquis took off by first hitting a parked car then attempting to hit the officers. those officers quickly had to

jump out of the way. police say the driver went through a playground which caused his tire to come loose but he still continued leading officers on a pursuit while he and his passengers threw cocaine out of the windows. at one point the suspects stopped making it seem like they would surrender. only to continue the chase. >> in his haste and desperation to get away, the operator of this vehicle struck two police cars striking one of those police cars two separate times at two separate locations. >> front tires were off and they were, like, sparking. he was speeding down. i don't understand how he could be speeding down that fast. >> reporter: police were able to arrest the 51-year-old driver and 30-year-old passenger. when they tried to run away on foot. they were found with pills and cocaine. in addition to drug charges, the driver will be charged with aggravated assault for trying to attempt to injure an officer. he's currently in the hospital right now being treated for a cut on his forehead that he sustained during the crash.

reporting in mayfair, aundrea cline-thomas nbc 4 news. another close call involving a philadelphia police officer tonight after his cruiser collided with a fire truck. skyforce 10 over that scene along caster avenue in juniata around 9:00 tonight. the officer is expected to be okay. the crash is under investigation. new at 11:00, a 102-year-old plus her 7 2-year-old daughter both attacked inside their jersey shore home. >> new tonight we're hearing the women's ordeal in their own words including how they decided to fight back. nbc 10's keith jones has the story from toms river, ocean county. >> i was frightened. i was annoyed more than anything. >> reporter: rarely does something bother 102-year-old evelyn drucker until yesterday when a police knocked on this door and knocked her to the ground inside their tom rivers home. her daughter, bonnie, was too shaken to talk on camera.

>> i tried to bite him. i was so mad and afraid. he said he had a knife. he didn't have a knife. he took duct tape out of his pocket. >> reporter: police say he yelled at her. >> i want money, give me money. i said i'll give you whatever i have in my wallet. >> reporter: detectives tell us the man avoided her credit cards. bonnie's mother, meanwhile, tried to activate her lifeline pendant but was too slow. >> he grabbed it off my neck and then he gave it back to me. >> reporter: that's when the suspect pushed her down. then had a change of heart. gingerly picking her back up. >> what would you say to him if he found who he was? >> probably wouldn't speak to him. >> reporter: bonnie says the man never apologized and left with just $30. police are still searching for him. it's a nightmare they both will never forget. >> i was thinking of one of these tv shows, what do you do? >> reporter: right. >> what do they tell you to do? >> reporter: in toms river, keith jones, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, video show s

police in florida arresting a man wanted for a murder inside a philadelphia grocery store. authorities say they took kayree reid into custody after the car he was in rammed police cruisers. there was also a baby in his car who was not injured. reid has been on the run for nearly a month. he's wanted for shooting and killing a man inside j&r perez grocery back on november 10 in mantua. it's unclear when he will be brought back to philadelphia. tonight the naacp among critics, jury acquit a dover police officer in an assault case. jurors debated 16 hours before clearing the officer this afternoon. this video of webster kicking dickerson in the head. he was knocked unconscious and broke his jaw. webster testified he was trying aim for dickerson's up ur body and missed. >> when you broke it down into milliseconds you could see the gentleman moving his hands up and down and we all know that tom was in fear. >> for me i don't have a

response to this because it's beyond belief. i don't know how a jury in this community, 12 people, could reach that decision. >> the aclu filed a civil suit on dickerson's behalf. today we learned that suit was settled with the city of dover and officer webster. to another high-profile case involving police in baltimore. tomorrow defense attorneys begin their case in the trial of the first police officer charged in the death of freddie gray. officer william porter is charged with manslaughter, misconduct in office, and reckless endangerment. in frilapril gray died after suffering a spinal cord injury in police custody. they say he contributed to gray's death when he failed to call for medical health. five other police officers also face charges. tonight republican presidential candidate donald trump is denying reports that he's planning to visit jordan. earlier today, the "associated press" reported he planned to visit the muslim majority kingdom at the end of the month but trump denied this on

twitter. this comes one day after trump called for a ban on all muslims entering the united states. leaders nationwide condemned trump's remarks including philadelphia mayor michael nutter. >> he's an [ bleep ]. i mean, what -- the only banning that should be done is that person not being allowed in the city of philadelphia. >> nutter compared trump to hitler saying he is causing a level of fear mongering not seen since world war ii. now to the mass shooting in san bernardino, california. nbc news has learned the couple behind the attacks spent at least a year preparing for it and the husband may have discussed an attack three years ago. tonight investigators are examining a $28,000 deposit made to syed farook's bank account in the weeks before the attack. agents are also questioning a former neighbor who they say agreed to buy assault rifles for farook. authorities say farook and his wife shot and killed 14 people

last wednesday before they died in a shootout with police. the man charged in last month's deadly shooting at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado was due in court tomorrow. prosecutors will charge robert dear with murder. dear is accused of killing three people at the clinic including a police officer. nine other people were wounded. new at 11:00, a mother under arrest. police say they found hundreds of bags of heroin inside her home. >> and tonight neighbors are shocked. nbc 10's denise nakano reports from chester. >> reporter: maria gutierrez stunned her chester, delaware, county neighbors with her early morning arrest, while most of them were fast asleep on a block lined with christmas lights and home to many young children. >> they kicked the door in and we didn't know why. >> i never seen any activity. i was very surprised. i mean, so close to home. >> reporter: police served a search warrant on gutierrez's home on peoples street friday

following an ongoing narcotics investigation. detectives say the 29-year-old mother of two young daughters had at least 50 bundles of heroin totaling more than 700 bags plus 2 loaded guns and cash. >> to find out that something like that was going right across the street, it really shocked me. you know, especially the fact that she had guns in the house. >> reporter: the probable cause affidavit states gutierrez directed police to a closet in her bedroom that held the heroin bundles stamped monopoly and juice. neighbors say she was one of the last on the block they would ever suspect. >> she would take her children to school then she'd be gone for a while and she would come back, but that's all we knew. i never knew anything like that was going on. >> reporter: gutierrez is charged with dealing heroin. she's being held in the delaware county prison. in chester, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. pennsylvania senators may vote as early as tomorrow on whether to start a process that could lead to kathleen kane's

removal as attorney general, charged of leaking secret grand jury material to a newspaper then lying about it. she claims her legal trouble started when she released hundreds of pornographic e-mails. the e-mails were exchanged between state prosecutors, judges and law enforcement officials on government computers. today a state board filed four ethics charges against a state supreme court justice implicated in that e-mail scandal. the board says justice michael eakin violated codes of conduct by exchanging lewd and defensive e-mails with friends. the e-mails were among those kane released two months ago. meanwhile an aide to kane faces up to six months in jail tonight after convicted of criminal contempt. a judge today found patrick reese snooped through office e-mails in violation of a protective order. he is kathleen kane's driver and bodyguard. prosecutors say he went through computer files to keep tabs on the criminal investigation of his boss.

cheers for the city's tallest new attraction tonight. philadelphians gathering to celebrate the official grand opening of the observation deck. gives people 160 degree views of the city nearly 900 feet above street level. it's open every day now from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. a victory tonight for margate in long-running dune battle playing out on the jersey shore. a judge today ruled margate will be allowed to challenge whether the state is justified in seizing 87 properties through eminent domain. the state wants to widen beaches and build protective sand dunes following superstorm san day. some residents of margate and other shore towns are opposed to that plan. in harrisburg an unlikely animal welfare advocate attracted crowds today. former eagle michael vick went to the state capitol to lobby for legislation known as the hot dog bill. it would give first responders the authority to rescue dogs and cats from cars and trucks when it gets too hot without facing

liability. may seem like a change of heart for vick who served nearly two years in prison for running a dogfighting ring. >> i was part of the problem when i was at my lowest. i made the decision to make change. >> vick played for the eagles for five seasons. he's now a backup quarterback for the pittsburgh steelers. there were tears and heartache in philadelphia's fishtown section tonight. the community gathered to remember a murdered neighborhood block captain. cathie wilson was beaten to death with a wrench. it happened inside her home last friday. jane johnson and james cheaver are charged in that killing. johnson is the victim's former housekeeper. investigators say they took $20,000 from her after killing her. now to pennsylvania's budget battle. tonight the five-month-long stalemate shows no signs of coming to an end. once again. house republicans trying to solve the crisis with their own spending plan instead of a bipartisan senate proposal supported by governor tom wolfe.

democratic critics say the house plan is very similar to a budget that passed in june and was vetoed by the governor. this job to help people. >> a showdown with police. what had temple students so upset they tried to force their way in? plus a sign of hate at another local school. the investigation and how the campus is now coming together. and many areas are already in the 30s. it's going to be another cold start tomorrow morning but we have much milder temperatures in the forecast even through the weekend. i'll show you the near record numbers coming up.

several people carved swastikas in chestnut hall and other hateful messages were left. officials are looking to track down whoever's responsible but the jewish community says it will not be intimidated. >> we're about love and peace and unity and light and there's no room for darkness. >> rowan is asking anyone with information about the vandalism to call university police. no justice. no justice. >> tension at temple university as students try to force their way into a meeting of the board of trustees. the board was discussing a plan to build a $100 million football stadium on campus. >> right now temple plays at lincoln financial field. today the trustees decided to delay a vote to get more support for the move. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas takes a closer look at the issue. >> reporter: outside of sullivan hall tensions mounted as temple university students tried to gain access to the board of

trustees meeting. >> people have been displaced for years and years and years now because of temple and temple is intentionally vague about its plans for where the stadium is going to go. >> down with the stadium! >> reporter: a coalition of students joined local residents to protest building a $100 million football stadium on campus. >> with respect to this new stadium. >> reporter: meanwhile, inside of sullivan hall trustees were expected to take the first vote on the stadium project. university president has gone on record to support the idea. citing the momentum of the record-breaking football team, creating a better game-day experience, and bringing in more jobs as reasons why. >> the desire to have an on-campus stadium has been compelling. >> reporter: but in a surprising move, the trustees decided to defer a vote after mayor-elect jim kenny says he wanted to weigh in. today nbc 10 spoke to kenny about the proposal. >> this was driven by the exorbitant amount of money being charged to them at the linc and had to find another venn withdrew so we can get that

weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, tonight was chilly following another mild december day. temperatures a little above normal today but here's nbc 10 outside philadelphia city hall. where temperatures weren't enough to stop these people from enjoying a nice evening stroll, but for tonight you did need the jacket and will tomorrow morning. we have areas in the 30s and 20s. it will be chilly to start off your morning tomorrow. afternoon highs will be a little milder than they were today. as we go into the rest of the week we will be getting warmer into the 60s and by the weekend we're talking about potential near record high temperatures. i'll show you the forecast in just a second. as we go into the overnight hours, though, temperatures will be dropping down into the 30s. most of the area already in the 30s, but we're really going to be bottoming out in the mid 30s by the time you wake up and walk outside tomorrow morning, around the upper 30s or near 40 degrees by 8:00 a.m. by noon we'll already be in the low 50s. now, today we topped out at 50

degrees but tomorrow we do expect the mid 50s. by thursday around 60 degrees. by friday, we're looking at the low 60s. now the average high is actually 47 degrees. so we are going to be staying above normal. way above normal by the end of the week and over the weekend. even warmer than that. right now, most of the area is in the 30s. 39 degrees in philadelphia. 31 in pottstown. allentown's at 29 degrees. so is mt. holly and millville coming in at 28 degrees at the moment. it will be chilly tomorrow morning. we will be staying nice and dry. we have the clouds around right now. no rain heading this way. not until about next week. and we will be staying dry all the way into the weekend. here's future weather. so our weind direction tomorrow is going to shift, come in from the south and east. that's going to warm us up. you'll see the clouds tomorrow afternoon. we stay mild and dry. then by thursday, our temperatures are going to get a little bit warmer around 60 degrees. and by friday, we expect this to be the warmest day of the week with temperatures in about the low 60s and that warmup continues all the way through

the weekend. so we have two things going on this weekend. we have the army navy game saturday. kickoff at 3:00 p.m. temperatures should be in the mid 60s. dry through the entire day saturday. by fourth quarter, upper 50s. then we have the eagles game sunday. kickoff for that around 1:00 p.m., temperatures will be in the mid 6 0s. by fourth quarter right around 67 degrees. so that will be the unseasonably warm day out of the weekend. we could be near some record high temperatures, too. for tonight, though, temperatures will be bottoming out in the upper 20s north and west around 37, philadelphia. low 30s for some of our suburbs in new jersey. we could see light patchy fog. by tomorrow shouldn't be an issue. mostly cloudy through the day tomorrow. mild temperatures. 52 to 55 for the afternoon high. a little bit warmer than it was today. thursday, we're around 60 degrees. friday, 6 3. saturday, 66. and we keep on warming for sunday. 68 degrees. rain chance returns as we go into next week.
