news"'s front page cartoon shows trump cutting off the head of the statue of liberty with the phrase, "when trump came for the mexicans, i did not speak out as i was not a mexican. when he came for the muslims, i did not speak out as i was not a muslim. then i came for me." the phrase borrows from a poem targeting germans during the rise of adolf hitler. "nbc nightly news" will have more tonight at 6:30 after this newscast. breaking news at a school in north philadelphia. police say a seven-year-old student stuck several other students with a hypodermic needle. the school recovered two syringes yesterday. they're working to determine what if anything was in those needles. the school has advised parents to take their kids to be checked out if they were among those

stuck with needles. new at 6:00 tonight, a school brawl landed at least five people in handcuffs at a high school in south engineejer. the police chief met with school leaders. there were allegations of police brutality as they tried to break up the fight. south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is joining us live. i know you spoke to the police chief a short time ago. >> reporter: jacqueline, he says they're working with the district now to change the dismissal procedures so this doesn't happen again. the chief says he's embarrassed by some of the students' behaviors. and he responded himself to what he called this out of control melee. >> you're going to come to school and you're going to cause a problem, academy disorderly, you're going to break the law, we're going to arrest you. >> reporter: this is video of a student's cellphone posted to social media, one angle of the

chaotic after math of a fight in the penns grove high school hallway. police attempted to lock the doors. >> it was a fight with students. and it was them against us. >> reporter: the police chief tells me when students resisted, police ordered a county-wide police response, to include state police, the sheriffs and prosecutor's office as well as woodstown pd. >> we were overwhelmed. probably about 70 or 80 kids outside. >> reporter: in this shot you can see police on the floor placing one student under arrest. he confirms this is a picture of the 18-year-old student arrested who was in handcuffs. when he thrust himself into a reinforced glass door. >> we have that on video, to dispel any rumors that an officer did that, that is untrue. >> reporter: since then, rumors in town of police brutality. >> our officers used the utmost

restrai restraint, even though there was a mob outside. >> reporter: the police released a statement saying it was not a mob. since juveniles were involved, he can't yet release the video. >> we've had five students arrested and pending one faculty member at this time. there will be an additional 20 other students that will be charged. >> reporter: and we did ask a couple of students and parents to speak to us today. but they said they are not interested unless and until the school surveillance video is made public. our request for that video is being considered. live in penns grove, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. a grieving family looking for justice didn't get it today from a philadelphia jury. the man on trial for billing beau zabel was found not guilty. zabel was a teaching student who had moved to philadelphia for a teaching program at drexel. marcellus jones was charged after the man accused of being

the get away driver was murdered. jones is serving a life sentence because of that murder. after today's not guilty verdict was read, beau zabel's family gathered at the spot where beau was shot to death. they're disappointed in the jury's decision. >> i'm upset. but, you know, ultimately there's another judge. and he'll have to pay the price. >> defense attorneys say the witnesses were not believable or credible in the case. jones shouted out his thanks to the jury after the verdict. many, mo, and jack will not be bought out by bridge stone. carl icahn this week put an offer on the table valued at two million. pep boys gave bridgestone until friday to increase its officer. pep boys, which sells auto parts and fixes cars, has about 800

locations around the country. no shovels needed for this groundbreaking. check out the subaru outback doing the heavy lifting at the company's new home in camden. it said it was getting too expensive to do business in new jersey, so it accepted $118 million in tax credits over a ten-year period to move to camden. the company says it will bring its 600 employees and hire 100 more. subaru plans to finish construction by the end of 2017. we may feel a little chilly tonight. but the warm-up is here. >> nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has his mild first alert focrecast. these temperatures are amazing. >> in a normal year this would be considered a pretty warm day for december. but this is just the beginning of the warm-up we're seeing. 58 degrees today. the average high is 47. we're going to go up every day as we go into the weekend until we could into record territory.

we're in the 50s everywhere except in the poconos right now. and that is above the average high for this time of year. we have some clouds coming through. that's also going to prevent the temperature from dropping very much, and maybe a few sprinkles with it toward daybreak. the temperature not really dropping very much at all tonight. and we'll see just how high it's going to get over the weekend with the seven-day in just a few minutes. new at 6:00, a rash of christmas decorations stolen from three homes. they had their laser lights ripped off. two others had front yard displays just taken, yesterday between 9:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. another problem for christmas lights. christmas decorations started a fire and caused $100,000 in damage to this home. the decorations malfunctioned monday night. fortunately no one was hurt.

new information on a deadly forklift accident we first told you about at 4:00. police say a man died when a forklift ran him over this afternoon at the boccella plant. police believe he walked into the path of the forklift and the operator just didn't see him. police do not expect any criminal charges. osha is investigating. a man was shot several times in germantown around lunchtime today. he died at the hospital. you may notice a school bus inside the crime tapes, but police tell us that has nothing to do with the murder. police are searching for the gunman. in just a few minutes philadelphia firefighters will remember one of their own, killed exactly a year ago. lieutenant joyce craig died wile working a house fire in west oak lane. she's the first female firefighter to die on the job in the city's history. the fire department will honor craig and engine company 64 in lawn crest,ed and at 6:30.

a philadelphia man is charged with stealing benefits from his mother for 20 years. after she died, the philadelphia u.s. attorney says anthony cooper took nearly $70,000 from the government over that time. if convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison. a woman was assaulted while walking in center city monday morning. the special victims unit tells us the woman says a man stopped her and asked her for directions at south penn square around 10:30. he then touched her. she screamed and he ran away. penn state is paying out millions of dollars to organizations battling child sex abuse. 44 organizations, in fact, will benefit from the first round of grants. the money is coming from a fund that penn state agreed to pay because of its handling of the jerry sandusky child sex abuse scandal. the money will stay in pennsylvania, expanding child advocacy centers, and providing more access to counseling.

sandusky was the university's long time defensive football coach. he's appealing after being sentenced to more than 30 years for child molestation. as lawmakers in harrisburg still debate over the budget, some businesses in our area are worried that they could be hurt by hour lawmakers decide to pay for it. dry cleaners are worried that they'll start taxing their services. they're asking their customers to contact lawmakers and ask them to find the money somewhere else. >> dry cleaning is not a luxury. it's a necessity. nobody wants to walk around in dirty clothes. 85% of dry cleaning customers use our services for their work clothes. and now you're putting an added burden on them also. >> we reached out to the governor's office. they tell us they're still working out the details of where to find the money. gas prices are low in new jersey. but could they hit a buck 50 by christmas? >> wow, that's great. especially during christmas. >> i'm ted greenberg.

>> announcer: this is nbc 10 news. drivers in new jersey usually get the best deals on gas in the delaware valley. >> listen to this: you may pay as low as $1.50 a gallon in the garden state. jersey shore reporter ted greenberg fills you in on why. >> reporter: they're pumping it for $1.82 in pleasantville. definitely a good deal for many drivers. >> it's wonderful. it definitely goes a lot further. >> reporter: the garden state average for a gallon of regular is $1.93. and some fuel analysts say the price plunge is far from over. >> i think you could at least see five cents each week. you should see that accelerate towards the end of the month. >> reporter: jeffrey pelleton

with gasbuddy.com thinks we could see $1.50 in jersey by christmas. >> i will be scouring the state to find that $1.50. i think it will be there. >> reporter: the reason? a drop in the price of crude oil and increased production along with the switch ovover to less expensive gasoline. >> christmas presents should be a lot better this year. >> i think that's really great. really great. >> reporter: analysts say it's possible that gas prices will fall below $1.50 a gallon early next year and might not stop there decline until april. in toms river, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> triple a reports gas in south jersey is $1.89 a gallon, already cheaper than surrounding states. pennsylvania, people in our area paying about $2.28 a gallon. in delaware, drivers pay $2.06.

>> how are you today? >> i got my cast off. santa made a holiday stop in north philadelphia. the young patients can't leave the hospital, but thanks to the magic of technology they still were able to chat with the big guy about what they were wishing for this christmas. >> the kids were just beaming. they're here in a hospital, which can be a challenging situation for them. they go in and look at santa and forget where they are and it's all about santa and them. >> each child got a special holiday blanket and of course some of santa's helpers stopped by with candy canes. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> hard to believe we're in the month of december. as we get into the weekend, you're really not going to be believe it, because the warm-up has begun. it's going to continue as we go through the weekend.

we've got some fog that's going to be developing late tonight, could affect tomorrow morning's rush. that's about the only weather problem that we see in the next several days. and record warm temperatures over the weekend. we have a fair amount of clouds around right now, 54 degrees, the winds south at 11. the combination of the cloud cover and the southerly wind will keep the temperatures up during the night tonight. we got up to 58 degrees today. we're going up to 62 tomorrow, and 65 friday. and then it goes even warmer, right off the scale for the weekend. we'll have to change the scale. 50 degrees in doylestown. 51 in pottstown, some of the cooler spots. 52 in reading and allentown and quakertown and in mount holly. 51 in washington township. all of these numbers are way above average for this time of the night, at this time of the year. there's that southerly wind.

that's going to keep things kind of mild at night as well. we see clouds coming in, but no rain until western pennsylvania, could produce a sprinkle late tonight or tomorrow morning. the computer models show this weakening as it comes in. then we get sunshine later on. and then over the weekend, here's saturday. the record is 65. i'm predicting 68. sunday, record 65, predicting 70. yeah, 70 degrees in the middle of december. and not just in philadelphia are we expecting some records. wilmington on saturday, could easy set a record. reading may be one of the easier places to beat the record. then we have football. army-navy game, 68 degrees at kickoff. when is the last time we heard that, in the month of december? then even warmer for the eagles

game. the temperature could, yes, get to 70 degrees during the game. and it cools off until the fourth quarter. so the warm air is in. and it stays in through the weekend, and even into early next week. we cool down a touch on tuesday. and then warm right back up on wednesday. so any kind of cooling we get is going to be temporary. not as chilly tonight with fog developing late, may be a little drizzle for the morning rush. 45 for the low in philadelphia. 38 north and west. do you think the day tomorrow, the early fog or clouds give way to sunshine. and then the temperatures go up. it will depend on just how quickly the clouds break up, as to how warm we get. we're just going to keep getting warmer each day. saturday, record warmth. sunday, record warmth, near 70 degrees. and another warm day monday with showers. and then, it doesn't really cool down much after that. answer danny policy else.

danny pommells with you once again. lesean mccoy says he doesn't have any hate for chip kelly. today he seemed to be singing a different tune. he said he would like to shake mccoy's hand on sunday. mccoy was asked about that and it doesn't sound as if he has any love for him either.

are making spirits bright for children who need at it most. the 2nd and 15th districts hosted their annual holiday party today, treating children in the district to a pizza lunch and magic show. the children played games, had a dance party, took pictures in a photo booth and received a surprise visit from santa himself. >> santa was really busy today, because patients at st. christopher's hospital for children also got a special visit from him and mrs. claus. kids met santa, got toy deliveries from penn crest high school varsity ice hockey team. officials also lit the hospital's christmas tree to kick off the holiday season, although it feels really warm for the holiday season. >> santa's had to adjust from the north pole. >> it will sneak up on us, because it doesn't feel like the christmas season or by the weekend it's going to feel more like -- not quite labor day. how about halloween? i mean, it's going to feel like it's october by this weekend.
