religious community coming together right now to pray for calm and peace. but first it's beginning to feel a little too hot for the holidays. temperatures in the 60s today, ahead of what will likely be a record setting weekend. nbc 10 news at 5:00 starts right now. thanks for joining us this evening. temperatures around 10 degrees above normal, hitting the 60s at a time when most of us expect to start seeing some snow on the ground some places. >> yeah, you might be enjoying doing your christmas shopping in shorts, but not as much as some businesses who are staying busy well beyond their usual season. we are bringing you live team weather coverage tonight, nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen tells us what kind of warm records we can set this weekend. >> let's begin with nbc 10's delaware bureau reporter tim furlong. people liking this weather? >> reporter: i know i sure am, as it gets dark here, i can tell you getting more festive as the holiday lights come up, but getting chillier. let's keep this in perspective. mid-december, take a look at the slasher sign, you see it's 5:03,

wait for the temperature, it's 51 degrees. not bad, we'll take it. we don't usually have our bare pigs in the sand on the final page of the calendar, don't usually have shorts on our legs or top down on the jeep either, but, yes, this is december in r rehobeth and getting warmer. >> we just moved from georgia. >> i love it, but i don't love it. it's christmastime, so i feel like i'm in florida or something, but i love -- we all love the beach weather. >> reporter: this santa at the christmas store is way overdressed. the surfing santa has it right. it is nice, the sounds of the waves, crashing and the cha-thing at beach businesses who appreciate the warm weather when they want people to come down here for holiday shopping. they say their only bad post-summer weekend was in october when the nor'easter came through. since then, things have been great. of course, if you sell scarves,

clydesdales, how beautiful are they? they are taking part in the parade and tree liekting festivities there. we'll check in on those horses in ten minutes. >> for now let's go to sheena parveen. sheena, hard to believe it is december 10th. >> yes, it is hard to believe because the video you just showed, the snow falling, we definitely don't have that, not even approaching the area, if any precip were to be heading this way it would be rain. we are way too warm out there. today 62 degrees, tomorrow we expect 65. this is where we should be this time of the year, 46 degrees. we are going to be almost 20 degrees above normal for tomorrow and into the weekend you can bet that temperatures will be around 20 degrees above normal, so the warmup does not just stop with tomorrow, it will continue for your saturday and sunday and even fall into the beginning of next week. temperatures right now near 60 in philadelphia, still near 50 in millville, 56 degrees wilmington, 49 in allentown, so

it's getting a bit cooler with the sun going down, but when you compare it to where we should be this time of the year, not really that cool. by 9:00 p.m. tonight in philadelphia, low 50s, poconos will be in the mid 40s, shore by 9:00 p.m. upper 40s and we will see another round of the fog developing overnight tonight. keep that in mind tomorrow morning and plan for another warm day in the forecast. we'll take a look at how warm your weekend will get, also the army/navy forecast and eagles forecast coming up. local political and religious leaders gathered this morning in hunting park to denounce the recent terror attacks in the name of faith. nbc 10's george spencer reports they are trying to emphasize that islam is fundamentally a religion of peace. >> you grew up right in this neighborhood. >> right in this neighborhood. >> reporter: yusef is a southwest philadelphia native, but recently his own neighborhood streets have felt less friendly after the mass shooting investigated as terrorism last week in california, planned and executed

by radicalized muslims and here at home a pig's head left at the mosque in north philly where he went to grade school. >> i don't feel safe in my own environment, in my own neighborhood, i have to look out for, you know, my own well being. >> reporter: he is studying to become an eman says the terror on the news bears no connection to his own faith, a faith of humility, respect, and peace. at a gathering this morning, leaders denounced the recent extremist attacks in the name of religion and stressed that christianity, judaism, and islam are all fundamentally religions of peace. they also criticized presidential candidate donald trump's ban on muslims entering the u.s. >> we've come in a united voice to say this must stop. the muslim community, they are brothers and sisters. >> we cannot close our eyes and our ears to the stoking of fears and peddling fear and pushing

time to take a stand. defiting isis was the topic in center city today. democrat senate candidate hosted the discussion, saying isis has grown to something much larger than the organization established in syria and iraq. it's now an organization exporting terrorism all over the world, he says, so he believes the u.s. approach has to change. that means establishing a coalition of willing countries in order to bring down isis. >> diplomatically we got to bring together nations that are often adversarial to us but are there, iran and russia, and work together in a coalition of the willing so we don't own the ground game there. >> sestak served as director of defense policy in the clinton white house. he faces mcginty and john fedorman for u.s. senate, a seat held by pat toomey, that could help decide control of the senate. the white house is financializing a proposal that would expand background checks on gun sales without

congressional approval. the white house has said it's exploring closing so-called gun show loophole, the loophole allows people to buy weapons at gun shows and online without a background check. connecticut could become the first state to ban gun sales to anyone on federal no-fly watch lists. the state's governor proposed that idea today, he hopes to use an executive order to ban gun sales to anyone not allowed to fly. connecticut is still working to get access to the federal lists. new information today in a police-involved shooting from july. an atlantic grand jury decided not to indict the officers involved. the suspect was shot and killed. inside the store police found an employee stabbed to death by the suspect. philadelphia city council will look for ways to fix the criminal justice system.

the council president wants a special reform committee to meet in january. the goal is to reduce the number of people in prison and to keep offenders from repeating their crimes. councilman darryl clarke says from misguided drug laws to crime prevention tactics tainted by prejudice, our criminal justice system has an impact on effort resident and institution in philadelphia. police are calling it revenge gone wrong. several lehigh university football players facing charges, players allegedly broke into a home and purged a man while they slept, for an alleged attack on a fraternity president but went into the wrong house. the university is reviewing the students' conduct. new at 5:00, hundreds of workers in the philadelphia suburbs are fighting for a $15 pay. about 1,400 janitors from union

32-bj say they are fighting to reach an agreement with their contractors. they mostly work in office buildings in bucks, chester, and montgomery. right now they earn $12.35 an hour, which employees say is not enough to make ends meet. >> they are asking for $15, not because they want it, because they need it. a lot of these workers are working two and three jobs, young mothers, fathers, these are not teenagers. sometimes are making a choice, are they going to pay their rent or pay their bill. >> we reached out to several companies who hire the contracted workers. no one gave us an official comment. the current contract expires tuesday. right now at 5:00, rapper meek mills is in a philadelphia courtroom for his latest parole violation hearing and his girlfriend nicki minaj is with him. mill violated a parole by repeatedly changing his court-approved travel schedule. he said the music industry is chaotic and he's not trying to

this is nbc 10 news. >> boston officials believe someone may have tampered with a train that left the station without an operator this morning. the governor said an inspection of the train showed some of the controls have been manipulated. the train left the braintree station around 6:00 a.m. and made no stops as it continued past another station. that's when workers cut power to the third rail and finally brought the train to a stop. no one onboard was hurt. police say worried passengers on a new jersey

transit bus did the right thing when they reported concerns over a man with a clock. the bus was stopped by marlboro police around 8:30 this morning as it headed from newark to lakewood. passengers saw a man holding a clock and became suspicious. they alerted the driver, who then called police. a bomb squad checked out the clock and found it was not a threat at all. police say better to be safe than sorry and if you see something suspicious, say something. in decision 2016, today donald trump has another poll to brag about. his ban on muslims entering the u.s., not hurting his numbers in the least. nbc's steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: donald trump's new poll number is as huge as the sign on his hotel project near the white house, a trump best, 35% support, more than double his nearest rivals in the c cbs/new york times national poll of republicans.

today and i did not hear any complaints, so it's been well above average for us, temperatures in the second week of december in the 60s. compare that to our average for this time of year, just 46 degrees, compared to last year temperatures were in the mid 40s, and downtown dog walkers and al fresco diners rejoicing over this extended early fall weather. >> it's like southern california. some people love the cold, that's not me. i'm like a hot weather girl. >> this is absolutely marvelous, a gift, a gift to us, to eat a fresco in mid-december, every day we have weather like this in december is a gift. >> reporter: and although the temperatures don't feel like christmas is right around the corner, if you're looking for a way to enjoy the mild comfortable conditions, you can come out here to west conshohocken, the clydesdales are already here and the tree lighting won't happen for

in dover. so still for this time of the evening even though it's cool we are still unseasonably warm. the average high is 46 degrees. today we got to 62, tomorrow 65, and you see that steady rise all the way through your saturday and sunday. temperatures near 70 degrees over the weekend. so this is very warm for this time of the year. it's going to end up being a very warm month of december. right now we are dry, big picture shows some clouds moving in, but really no rain heading this way. again, not until monday, but as we go overnight tonight, you'll notice another round of fog developing, so by tomorrow morning's commute, keep in mind patchy fog on the roadways. then through the afternoon, the wind direction's going to bring us warm temperatures again, so still that southwest wind expected for friday, and then we go into the weekend, that southwest wind continues, the dry air continues, and we're looking at temperatures 20 degrees above normal. this is for your saturday, staying nice and dry both saturday and sunday, so we are looking at those record high

temperatures in the forecast. this is for the philadelphia area, saturday the forecast high is 68. the record is 65. sunday the forecast high is 70, and the record is 65 degrees. and it's not just philadelphia, it's many other areas that could hit record highs, so coming up i'll show you those, as well. for tonight, though, clear skies, mild temperatures, but that fog will be forming late tonight. 47 for the low in philadelphia, 41 areas north and west, and tomorrow we'll see early fog, see the sunshine again, kind of like today, with temperatures warmer. 63 to 66 degrees. now we go into saturday, the big army/navy game at the linc, sunny skies. tailgaters, temperatures in the mid 60s for you by kickoff at 3:00 p.m. around 68 degrees, and by the fourth quarter around 60 degrees. and for the eagles game sunday at the linc, tailgaters near 60 degrees, kickoff mid 60s, and by the fourth quarter temperatures near 70 degrees. it's going to be unseasonably warm for both games this weekend, but i think we're all happy it's going to stay dry at

this is nbc 10 news. >> northeastern university in boston is under fire for a controversial plan to arm campus officers with semiautomatic rifles. the rifles will be in campus police vehicles when there is a high level threat like an active shooter. the boston police department is against the plan. law enforcement says campuses in the middle of cities need to cooperate more with police rather than make decisions on their own. university of delaware students will go tonight to buy $500 worth of ammo with money from the school. we told you yesterday about this story. now the president of the students for the second amendment club said club members are going to cabela's tonight to buy the ammo.

the club promotes responsible gun ownership. the university says it met the criteria for funding, so the club will use the money to buy ammunition to practice at the state gun range in new castle. we all know kids around the world and some adults, too, spend lots of time on phones and tablets. millions of young people got a look at the science that makes the devices work. students here joining millions of others around the world and around our area, as well, in the hour of code program. president obama, mark zuckerberg, bill gates, and other celebrities are backing this program that sets aside to teach kids about computer programming and app development. >> they already play games, so why not engage them in higher level of thinking and planning and seeing how, in a sense, easy it is to get started with coding, with computer programming. >> code.org is behind the

have learned the board has concluded their review of the complaints and they have now referred the matter to the delaware county district attorney's office. and just a few moments ago we talked to the district attorney's office. the spokesperson tells us a special investigation unit is looking into those allegations. back to you guys. >> all right, harry. new tonight, nbc 10 has learned of a police investigation surrounding an athletic coach at a philadelphia private school. deanna durante has spent three days digging into this story from chestnut hill. >> i can say that i'm aware of the fact that my client is being investigated for certain activity. >> reporter: criminal defense lawyer says he will not talk about the specific allegation against his client. was he let go from his job? >> again, we're still reviewing that. >> reporter: a spokeswoman says the coach in question is no longer employed by the school. sources affiliated with

springside chestnut hill says parents were alerted through e-mail, but suppose those who have spoken off camera says the e-mail was vague and did not give parents specific information, the name of the coach or what the person was alleged to have done. the spokesperson tells me the school is limited in what it can discuss and will not comment on personnel matters, sending a statement that reads in part, "we are confident the students know they have unfettered access to anyone in the school if they believe they are victims of any time of inappropriate conduct." the school notified child line. >> my client is aware of an investigation and at this point we'd like to hold off on any specific comments. >> reporter: we reached out to police and the special victims unit, our requests for comment have not been returned. perri says at this point he's not aware of charges filed against his client and the school says the case now rests in the hands of authorities.

in crehestnut hill, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. new video now of a burglar trying to use power tools to break into an atm. the man climbed into estevez mini market through an air vent back on november 15th. the robber spent about an hour trying to break into the atm. maybe you saw some sparks there on the right of your screen shooting off the machine. when that didn't work, he took about $7,000 in cash and cigarettes from the store. their creed is service before self. today camden cops recognized for living that motto every day. awards were handed out to the men and women of the camden county police department. most of those awards going to officers who handled difficult situations with armed suspects. more than 80 awards were given to officers for bravery. vai sikahema was the emcee of that event today. a crossing guard with almost a half century of experience is hanging up her stop sign. near broad and chestnut in center city. hopefully you had a chance to spend time outside today before the sun went down. >> i know. i know it's not going to hang on for that much longer, but it's been nice. nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen joins us with the forecast. a lot of people want it colder this time of year to get in the holiday spirit. >> especially if you're skiing or snow boarding and want to see the snow around this time of the year, but a lot of people are probably enjoying this weather. you can still manage the flip-flops during the day, especially as we go into the weekend. wait until you see that forecast. right now considering where we should be this time of year, we are unseasonably warm. the average high is 46 degrees and now that the sun has set, our temperatures have, in fact, cooled down, but we are still over ten degrees where we should be, even though our high temperature was in the low 60s, it's near 60 in philadelphia, 48 degrees in millville and pottstown, and we're going to get warmer tomorrow and the weekend. the warm air is still down to the south, the warmest of it, i should say, and tomorrow we're

going to keep getting more of the southwest wind. that's going to warm us up tomorrow more than today and over the weekend we'll be warmer than tomorrow. so warm up just continues all the way into the start of next week. tonight, though, we're going to look at temperatures on the mild side by 8:00 p.m., around 53 degrees still. by 11:00 tonight, temperatures around 50, so kind of cool, but really not where we should be this time of the year. that unseasonably warm air mass lasts all the way through the weekend, but early tomorrow morning you're not going to need the heavy coat by 7:00 a.m. temperatures near 50 degrees, patchy fog in the forecast again, then we warm up through the afternoon, into the mid 60s, unseasonably warm and near 70 as we go through part of your weekend. coming up we'll talk about the record high temperatures saturday and sunday and which areas could be breaking the record. that's straight ahead. we have breaking news concerning an e-mail scandal in harrisburg. a disciplinary court says it may suspend state supreme court judge michael eakin over the

scandal. earlier this week an ethics board filed four ethics charges against eakin. the board says eakin violated codes of conduct by exchanging lewd and offensive e-mails with friends. it's now in the hands of disciplinary court. the court today issued an order that gives eakin a chance to respond before it decides whether to suspend him. a hearing is set for later this month. the investigation began after kathleen kane submitted more than 1,000 eakin e-mails. kane claims her legal troubles started when she released the e-mails. kane is facing federal perjury charges and state lawmakers are deciding if kane can keep her job. from our delaware bureau, how would you like to have wine shipped right to your house? it's a possibility under a new bill, right now you can have wine shipped to your home if buying it at a winery. retailers are worried that the end of the shipping ban would hurt their sales, but the sponsors say two other states that changed their shipping laws

this is nbc 10 news. >> police in delaware are looking for some package thieves this evening. a neighbor in castle hills reported seeing a mini van following a ups truck. when the truck left, the man in the van jumped out and stole a package from the victim's doorstep. if you have information on the crime, police would like to hear from you. take a look at these surveillance images showing a man and woman using credit cards taken from a stolen car. that car was taken in late october. the victim's wallet was inside. the suspects used the stolen cards at convenience stores around newcastle county. it is eagles versus bills this sunday at the linc and the birds think they need a win to keep the division title hopes alive. >> today all the buzz is about a

here's a live look outside right now. clear conditions, we don't have any rain, and i think a lot of people are wondering where's the snow this time of year because it was snowing this time last year, but first you need cold air, which we don't have, and the precip, which we don't have. as we go into the weekend, we are talking about it staying unseasonably warm and dry. the clear picture we just showed you will be changing overnight because we have patchy fog in the forecast, but for today, those temperatures have reached the 60-degree mark, the 60s have returned and it's going to get warmer. i'll show you in a second which cities could be seeing that, then we go into monday, that's going to be our next chance for rain, so the rain is going to hold off for the weekend, this is good for plans you might have. live look at center city, nice conditions, but still very mild for this hour. 58 degrees, we hit 62 today, so that's well above our normal high of 46 degrees, and we're going to stay that way even

overnight tonight. temperatures well above normal, this is our trend close to 11:00 tonight, mid 40s and we pretty much stay in the mid 40s even by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, overnight lows not getting very cold at all. and this is what will be the case as we go into the weekend. right now nice and dry, clouds moving through, no rain heading this way, just that warm air and that's going to continue to move in as we go into tomorrow, all from the south. here is our setup, we're going to keep the southerly wind even overnight. this is going to lead us to patchy fog early tomorrow morning, that's south and southwest wind continues, that's a warm wind direction, too, that's going to give us warmer temperatures tomorrow than what we had today. then into the weekend, that wind direction continues to move in. this is going to give us temperatures 20 degrees above normal for saturday and sunday. so we are going to be unseasonably warm and, yes, those record high temperatures are going to be in the forecast. so allentown, you could hit a record high temperature, reading also, mount pocono you could get
