>> denise, the cousin, grabbed the youngest, we call her genesee, we call her baby, and put her in the car. they kidnapped her. >> reporter: police who had visited the home recently recognized the women and stopped their car immediately. they were able to make the arrests and return the 3 year old safely. the mcguires had no insurance, they are right now relying on the kindness of others. >> obviously, that's a problem, but more for, you know, we want these kids to have a good holiday and hopefully, you know, the grandparents can rebuild their home. >> reporter: and we understand there is dash cam video of the two women being arrested last night about a mile from the home. it's right now being reviewed by prosecutor's office. both mcguire and coyle are facing aggravated arson charges, attempted kidnapping, but the earliest they could appear in court is one week from today. live in washington township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. to our weather now, as far

as that goes this will certainly go down as a december to remember. >> it will. we don't know when we'll get another december like this. temperatures soared into the 60s again and the warmup continues just in time for the weekend. we love when that happens. here's a sight you don't usually see in early december, playing at washington lake park in gloucester county without heavy coats and winter gear. >> live look outside in philadelphia, little overcast, but pretty good day for a walk or bike ride around the schuylkill. nice out there. >> really nice. we have nbc 10 live team coverage of this unseasonably warm weather. nbc 10's chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has been tracking the temperature. >> let's begin with brittney shipp live outside in rittenhouse and enjoying this night weather. brittney? >> reporter: absolutely. in the last probably five minutes i've counted at least five people in shorts and t-shirts, so this is the place to be. take a look behind me here, you can see some of the outdoor performers having a good time

and everyone is kind of lingering around, not doing that quick winter walk where they walk quickly through the park. everyone's taking their time, maybe eating outside, if you wanted to grab a bite at the park, dine outside if you wanted to, and rittenhouse park is full once again with al fresco diners, dog walkers, even an inspiration for local dancers and artists. >> well, you got to enjoy it. 60 degrees, december, what, 11th? i can sit outside versus cooped up in the house, i can come out to the park, enjoy company. >> i love hot and humid are my friends. i love philadelphia in august. >> reporter: do you feel like it dampers the holiday spirit? >> no, doesn't damper my spirit. i love it. >> reporter: she was a delight to talk to. and that's really been the feeling here, there are no complaints with this weather. i did talk to one couple, they are from arizona, and they are

students at drexel and never been able to experience a true philadelphia winter. they were a little disappointed but they were not complaining. more details coming up, first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. back to you guys in the studio. >> did you learn how to juggle out there? guess not. how long is this going to last and are we still flirting with 70 degrees for the weekend? >> we should recue this tape of the beautiful weather in february when it's 30 below so people complaining now it's warm, just wait. let's check in with glenn gw schwartz glenn for a look at the weekend, glenn? >> the weekend is going to be significantly warmer than what we're seeing today, and today is about 15 degrees above normal. so yesterday we got to 62. so far today 60, temperature held down by some of the clouds we were talking about, but over the weekend it's going back up. 68 degrees on saturday, near 70 on sunday. the average is 46. and both of those days could see

records across many parts of the area. 59 degrees in philadelphia right now, but it is 60 in mount holly, millville, dover is 62, wildwood 63. that's the warm spot, and the cool spot, 54 in mount pocono. that is outrageous for this time of the year, even too warm at night for them to be making snow. you see those clouds coming across right now, but there's nothing on the radar close by. the clouds will also help keep the temperature up during the night tonight, so it's not going to be a cold night at all. take a look at this, by 8:00, about 58 degrees. and then we're still in the 50s by 11:00. cloudy skies, no rain, and then 7:00 a.m. 51 with patchy fog. that's above the average high temperature for this time of year. we'll see just how long this warm spell lasts in a few

minutes. sitting in and speaking out, police moved out protesters as they tried to block an entrance to philadelphia city hall today, an effort to ask the mayor to keep the current immigration policy in place. they want the city not to inform immigration when a convicted felon is about to be released. deanna durante was there as the protests happen, she joins us live from center city with the latest on what went down. dean deanna? >> reporter: protesters say it was their goal to be arrested. no arrests took place, but they say they want all immigrants to be protected, no matter their status when it comes to a criminal conviction. they blocked the northeast entrance to city hall, the main entrance to the building, but not the only way to enter or exit, and police moved two protesters who laid down in the

lobby at city hall. >> what we wanted from them was a firm no, they are not going to change anything. >> reporter: probation reporters organized, chanted, sang songs and compared philadelphia mayor michael nutter to donald trump. >> this is an important subject for us, maybe it isn't for the mayor. >> reporter: three members of the group were escorted to meet the deputy mayor. >> reporting of immigrants to i.c.e., i know -- >> not exactly what's happened. >> reporter: the deputy mayor told the group the mayor has not changed any policy, the mayor is reviewing it now. he says in 2014 the mayor pledged to not allow i.c.e. without a several court order. now he says i.c.e. agreed to the change but wants to be notified before violent offenders are released from jail. >> they are already fearful. >> i think what we have to do is we have to educate whatever we do, provide the education. >> reporter: but after the meeting, protesters demanded

their wishes be met and blocked the door to city hall. >> very important for the community to really be sure, you know, and be safe and make sure the police are not there to intimidate, but to be part of the community. >> reporter: the mayor was not in city hall at all today, he's in new york city attending the pennsylvania society and we can tell you that the deputy mayor told us there were no immediate chances to change that policy at least not today. protesters say the remaining few will stay at city hall until about 5:00 tonight and mayor-elect jim kenney says if mayor nutter makes a change in the policy he'll change it back when he takes office in january. reporting live at city hall, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. now to one of the biggest traditions in college football happening right here in philadelphia tomorrow afternoon, taking a live look from lincoln financial field. you can see there the team logos for army and navy, you can see army there painted in the end zone. both teams and their fans, they

are used to frigid temperatures, even snow when this game comes every december. far cry from the 60s this weekend. the two teams, cheerleaders, and bands got fans fired up at today's pep rally. nbc 10 with all the action there at the shops at liberty place. pep rally features the pull-up challenge, the army cadets won that competition. navy got the win, though, and bragging rights at this morning's rocky relay. the cadets and midshipmen running the relay up the famous rocky steps at the museum of art and compete in other endurance challenges. biggest tv show is back, espn's college gameday returning to philadelphia for the second time this season. the gameday crew was at independence mall for the

temple/notre dame game on halloween. they are going to broadcast tomorrow from xfinity live. the excitement and hype leading up to tomorrow's matchup, 3:00 p.m. is kickoff time. navy has won 59 of the 115 matchups. this is the 86th time philadelphia has hosted this rivalry. several protesters stormed the pennsylvania gop event today where donald trump was delivering the keynote speech, this just days after the presidential candidate ignited a controversy when he called for a u.s. ban on muslims. nbc 10's keith jones is live in the digital operations center with more on this. keith? >> jacqueline, trump was speaking at the annual commonwealth club luncheon in new york city today and there were protesters both outside and inside the event. hundreds of people demonstrated outside the plaza hotel today chanting "dump trump." the fundraiser wasn't open to

the media but about a dozen protesters got inside the event, disrupting his speech before getting forced out by hotel security staff. earlier this week trump was criticized by a number of world leaders for calling to ban muslims from the united states. the pennsylvania gop chairman has said chutrump chees's appea not an endorsement by the party. more than half americans oppose trump's proposed ban on muslims. according to a new poll, 57% of adult americans disagree with it, while 25% agree with it. 75% of democrats disagree with trump's proposal, while republicans are split. 42% support a muslim ban, 36% oppose it. live in the digital operations center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> a local retailer is capitalizing on the trump controversy with ban trump from philly gear. you're looking at the onsie version released after mayor

michael nutter said he'd ban trump from the city. trump responded calling the mayor a low life. >> trump's rival new jersey governor chris christie continues to hit the campaign trail, but he's losing support from his home state. the governor's approval numbers have hit a new low according to a poll released today, only 33% of the garden state's registered voters approve of the job christie's doing, while 62% disapprove. from our delaware bureau, police have arrested a man accused of hiding in the women's restroom. steven sackett has been charged. police say on two separate occasions he unscrewed the lights and hid in the women's stalls in newark. he's now out on bond. new video of a trio of robberies. police believe the same person is responsible for all three. the first incident happened last saturday at a 7-eleven in

fishtown. you can see the suspect approach the counter, pulls out a gun, demanded money and took off with some cash. police believe the same suspect pulled a gun on an employee, the employee tried to hit the suspect in the head with the cash register. the suspect got away with cigarettes. police say that same man robbed a wawa wednesday. the suspect asked for the same type of cigarettes, then pulled a gun on the employee. the ntsb is trying to figure out what caused a medical helicopter to crash in california. four people were killed in that crash. emergency crews started searching for the missing chopper last night after it disappeared from radio contact during a ten-minute flight. the pilot, a nurse, paramedic, and a patient were all killed. investigators say there was bad weather at the time of that crash. once again today the fbi is looking for leads in a lake not far from the scene of the san bernardino shootings.

investigators say the shooters, syed farook and tashfeen malik may have been at the lake and may have dumped evidence there, but they won't say if the shooters were there before or after last week's massacre that killed 14 people. the fbi won't say specifically what the dive teams are looking for. investigators are also questioning enrique marquez's, farook's friend who purchased the rifles used in the shootings. marquez told police farook discussed staging an attack in 2012 but reportedly got cold feet. meanwhile, family and friends are beginning to say good-byes. thousands attended a service this morning for damian means, a 58-year-old father of two. two other memorials were held today. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with new information on that e-mail scandal swirling in harrisburg. lawyers hired by kathleen kane will make up to $880 an hour to

search thousands of e-mails. that number was spelled out in a contract made public today. the lawyers will search thousands of e-mails on state computers for pornography and other offensive material. to pennsylvania's ongoing budget battle now, the state capitol is relatively empty today. house republicans consider their next move. it's up to them to respond to a budget agreement supported by governor wolf, house democrats, and the senate. philadelphia's teachers union is responding to a change included in the current budget framework. the senate passed the changes yesterday. those changes would involve distributing an additional $350 million to schools. but the philadelphia federation of teachers calls the changes disturbing. federation president jerry jordan explained why at a news conference this afternoon. he says if the changes pass, it would allow the state to take over up to five schools a year in philadelphia. >> state takeover have already proven itself to be an absolute disaster in our city.

philadelphia's public schools have been run by the school reform commission for the past 15 years, and in that time our school children have seen school buildings close and programs and services taken away. >> pennsylvania's budget stalemate is now in its fifth month. a quaker school in montgomery county is removing the adventures of huckleberry finn. the principal of friends' central says the language and portrayal of african-americans in the book makes students uncomfortable. the school decided the community costs of reading the classic outweighed the literary benefits. well, it has been a warm december to say the least. we could reach record highs this weekend, great news for those who hate the cold weather, not great news for the ski resorts. case in point, take a look. have not been able to open slopes. >> and they are not sure when business will start booming for the winter. nbc 10's drew smith headed out

to check out conditions for himself. >> live in the pocono mountains where they can't even make snow right now. just a lot of grass behind you, drew. >> reporter: yeah, jacqueline and jim, this is not a field, this is a ski slope but nobody will be riding down any time soon. the ski groomers have not been able to move around this season, the ski lift is stopped and just beyond the ski lift you can see a little bit of snow right there from a test run of the snow making machines a couple of weeks ago. today we saw it really start to melt. victoria thought a mid-december trip to camelback resort would be a good time to hit the slopes. >> we planned the trip six months ago for last weekend and realized they had absolutely no snow. >> reporter: she pushed the vacation back a week, but still no luck. >> this is like a christmas morning with no presents. >> reporter: drew works for camelback and says this scene of empty motionless ski chairs is not unheard of this time of year, they just got lucky the past few seasons with early cold

temperatures and snowfall. >> it's all based on air pressure and water. >> reporter: brooks showed us how he gets around the lack of snowflakes with snow guns that line the trails, but they do need help from mother nature. this snow was made on thanksgiving, but all for nothing. >> at that point, the forecast changed and we were kind of left hanging a little bit. >> reporter: they need three consecutive days of temperatures near freezing to coat the slopes. >> everybody right now is holding their breath, going to start falling soon. >> reporter: visitors are anxious, too, but this family found a way to embrace the warm weather and enjoy the mountain anyway. >> honestly, i wasn't sure, but we wanted to go, have a great time, enjoy everything. >> reporter: tourism promotors for this region have been working to offer more activities to make this destination more appealing no matter what the weather is. we're going to show you some of those attractions and how people enjoyed them today coming up at 5:00. live in the pocono mountains,

drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> just have to wait, until february things are really going to turn around, that's what he's looking at in the forecast. >> this will seem a far distant memory. >> loving that, right? >> yeah, and we may see an extension, perhaps, of the ski season. maybe it will go into march and april, a little farther out in time than it normally does, because i think the pattern is likely to switch at some point. not any time soon, that's for sure. we've got record warmth coming this weekend. we also have some fog. this is going to be affecting part of the area late tonight and early tomorrow morning, and then some rain coming in on monday. we've had a fair amount of cloudiness that's kept the temperature down a little bit from where it would have been, of course, with the sunshine. 59 degrees, winds southwest at 6, same temperature at this time yesterday, and we are 60 in bensalem and mount holly, but 55

in lancaster and mount pocono there, 54 degrees. that is way too warm for making snow in one spot. 62 degrees in dover on this particular map. these temperatures, of course, are way above average, the average is 46 degrees. and today is going to be the coolest day of the next several. 68 saturday and near 70 sunday and monday. best chance of breaking the record is on sunday. that record set in 1923. and here's why, because as warm as it is here, it's even warmer in cincinnati, 70s in nashville, 76 in little rock, arkansas, and in dallas. even 66 in wichita, kansas. this warm air is going to be moving this way. here are the clouds that thickened up this afternoon, preventing the temperature from going higher. more clouds back to the west, but there's no rain with it.

this is the radar and satellite. if there was rain, you'd see some green there. you're not going to be seeing any of that on saturday afternoon with the army/navy game. 67 degrees at kickoff with a fair amount of sunshine. and on sunday it may be even warmer, at least at some point during the eagles game, perhaps in the third quarter temperatures could get up to 70 degrees. the mild air, super mild for this time of the year, stays with us sunday through monday. on tuesday, you know, looks like it's making some movement there, but look what happens. it doesn't move until next friday. that's when the colder air starts coming in. and next weekend is going to be much, much colder than this weekend. so enjoy this one if you want some warm and sunny weather. unseasonably mild tonight with patchy fog late. 50 degrees for the low. that's not very low for

might want to call this a low speed escape. police in london searching for this guy who rode a hover board to steal a 24-pack of sports drinks. wept right into the store, grabbed the drinks and rolled right out without paying. happened back in september but police just released the video. after the crime britain declared the use of hover boards on public roads and walkways illegal. to another form of transportation, driving. drive sober or get pulled over. >> today the cherry hill police department kicked off its annual drunk driving crackdown as part of a statewide campaign. police will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints. 27% of all accident deaths last year were alcohol related. the campaign runs through january 1st. a surge in online shopping has made it tough for ups to keep up, so says the wall street journal.

the on time delivery rate for ups was 91% last week, that's compared to 97% a year ago. ups does more residential deliveries than fedex. the paper says ups has been slammed with extra pickups and doesn't have the staff to keep up. placed in a bear hug and badly beaten. >> that's some of the testimony today from the victim of an attack in center city. you're going to hear more from inside the courtroom coming up. also, teenage truckers. more young people could soon hit the road behind the wheel of tractor trailers. details on the law change making this legal and what safety advocates are saying today. and kids helping k-9s. the creative way first graders are protecting this dog from danger.

this is nbc 10 news. >> right now at 4:30 she's accused of hurling homophobic slurs and throwing punches at a gay man. today this woman faced her accuser in court. on the stand the victim recounted what he says happened to him on a center city street. >> that testimony was pretty graphic today. 25-year-old kat kherinryn knott facing years in prison if convicted of aggravated assault and other charges, as well. harry hairston has been sitting in on that trial. >> he joins us live, harry what happened? >> reporter: i'll tell you, first thing this morning one of the victims when on to the chair to testimony and he described in vivid detail exactly what happened to him and the injuries he suffered. the victim detailed his injuries, telling jurors he and his male kpan your were attacked as a group of people physically attacked them last september in center city.

kathryn knott, the daughter of a suburban police chief is charged with punching the victim and shouting slurs. he says during the encounter someone grabbed him from behind and held him while others punched him. the incident left him with an injured eye and broken jaw. he described how doctors screwed wire and metal into his jaw, leaving him unable to eat anything but soup for weeks, also lost 15 pounds because he couldn't eat. during his testimony he said he did not know who all struck him, but did see knott pointing and shouting slurs. later a witness for the prosecution took to the stand testifying she saw knott assaulting the man. knott, who was arrested with two men she was with that night maintains her innocence. the two men have pled guilty and were sentenced to probation. the judge sentenced a gag order preventing lawyers and witnesses from talking to the media. and the prosecutor also showed surveillance video from that night, however, that video will not be released to the public until after the trial ends. the trial just adjourned moments

ago. it will resume on monday. reporting live in center city, harry hairston, nbc 10 news. a bensalem mother and her cousin are accused of setting her father's home on fire in a custody dispute. it happened last night in gloucester county. investigators say lynnette mcguire and her cousin set the home on fire and tried to kidnap mcguire's 4-year-old daughter. no one was hurt. protesters tried to block an entrance to city hall today in an effort to convince mayor nutter to keep his current immigration policy in place. there were no reports of any arrests. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> this is another big story today, this december warmth. skies a little gray at times, still plenty to smile about in center city if you like warm weather in december.

>> not exactly warm enough for most people to take a dip in the ocean, but still a nice day at the beach. here's a live look down the shore in cape may. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with the nbc 10 first alert forecast. >> the warm weather is going to be sticking around for a bit. >> looks like it's sticking around not only through the weekend, but through much of next week, but the pattern will change and colder air will come in and it will be feeling like december eventually. but not by the time the eagles are playing on sunday. it's going to seem like it's a nice october day for the eagles game. in the meantime, we've been way above average. the average high temperatures 46 degrees. we hit 60 so far today, 68 for tomorrow, and 70 on sunday would be records for both days. right now we are in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees, even 54 degrees in mount pocono. that is pretty mild. the clouds around, that has

prevented it from being even warmer during the day today. through the night the clouds are going to prevent it from cooling off very much. by midnight we're only down to 54. we'll see how long this warm weather lasts, how warm it's going to get, and when the next rain is coming with the seven day in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. you could see more teenagers driving tractor trailers. >> that's right, all due to the new transportation deal signed by president obama. before this month 48 states allowed young people to drive big rigs, but this new bill allows 18 to 20 year olds to cross state lines if they learn to drive in the military. it's a move that concerns safety advocates. >> it's a dumb idea. why are we letting them drive when we see these studies that show that they have four to six times the fatal crash rate of more experienced and older drivers? >> but truck companies say they need more drivers. there are nearly 3.5 million now and industry leaders predict

they'll need 890,000 more over the next decade to keep up with growth and replace retirees. a three-person crew from the international space station is back on earth. nasa says the crew members lasted safely in kazakhstan after nearly five months in space. three other crew members are still at the station on the first joint u.s.-russian one-year mission. another crew will join them tuesday. new york's judge says fantasy sports companies fan duel and draft kings have to stop operating in the state. the judge made the ruling after hearing arguments whether daily fantasy sports games resulted to illegal games of chance or legal games of skill. an attorney for draft kings says the company plans to appeal the rule. nbc 10's parent company, comcast, is an investor in fan duel. good news for those hitting the road this holiday season, fewer teenagers and young adults are driving drunk.

inches of snow in just a few hours. just happened to occur right during the game. that was an amazing weekend. we've got another amazing weekend for different reason, record breaking temperatures coming, and some early fog tomorrow morning. we had some of that this morning and some rain coming on monday. looks like the weekend itself is going to be dry. we're seeing a nice looking sunset as the clouds are thinning out right now, at least temporarily. 59 degrees, winds southwest at 6, same temperature this time yesterday. and the official high for the day is in at 61 degrees. tomorrow we should be significantly warmer, 68, which would be a record. 70 on sunday and even 70 on monday would be close to record levels. look at some of these numbers. 54 in mount pocono. that is pretty amazing for december. they, of course, wish it was a lot colder. quakertown also 54 degrees,

reading 56, pottstown and doylestown 58. 57 in blue bell. 58 in washington township. 56 in kennett square, one of the relatively cooler places trenton at 57. and as we head to 56 in beach haven, 62 degrees in lewes and in dover, delaware. patch of clouds come across in the middle of the afternoon, that prevented the temperature from going even higher, got stuck at 60 for a couple of hours. then a break now and more clouds coming in later tonight and into tomorrow and the high temperature, of course, will be determined by how much cloud cover we get. the atmosphere as a whole is plenty warm enough to support records saturday and sunday. the record for tomorrow is 65, going for 68. record for sunday, 65, going for 70 degrees. that record set in 1923. we have some other records that are vulnerable, too, wilmington

could be broken, the allentown record and reading record might be one of the easier ones to break, as well, predicting five degrees we're going to break the record by. that's pretty significant. and for the army/navy game tomorrow, 67 degrees at kickoff and the eagles game on sunday, well, it's going to be in the 60s again at kickoff. 66, make off to near 70 for the third quarter perhaps before it starts cooling down at the end of the game. unseasonably mild with patchy fog late tonight, 50 for the low in the city, above the average high for this time of the year. tomorrow the early fog giving way to partly sunny skies. high clouds around, no rain. record warmth in some spots and the high temperature the upper 60s. and the seven day forecast, record warmth on sunday, perhaps again monday, but more clouds and that's when the showers come, mainly in the afternoon and at night. but it doesn't cool off that

some first graders are learning the importance of giving this holiday season. >> the students at white marsh elementary school raised money to purchase two new k-9 vests for the township's police department. this morning the first grade class presented the police department with a check for the vests. the students put their artistic skills to work and created note cards that were painted and sold to raise money for the service-based learning project. their teacher said the class wanted to put the money they raised back into the community. >> this year rather than a shelter we wanted to keep it really local and keep it at home, so we chose the white marsh police department, they protect us every day and we really do appreciate everything they do for us. >> the students raised more than $1,300 for the police department's two k-9 officers

live in the poconos. drew, usually cold there, doesn't feel like december in the mountains. ski resorts are empty. what other activities are open? >> reporter: well, keith, you could just see the looks of disappointment on people's faces when they came up to see the ski slopes are just grass right now and the ski lifts also closed, but like you said there are other attractions up here and because it was so warm, it was a perfect day to hit up the zip lines here, as well as the water park. no, this is not a scene from last summer, it's inside camelback resort's new indoor water park, where people hung out today, even though they originally planned to be out on the mountain. >> i was a little disappointed, we were hoping to do snow tubing or something. >> reporter: no tubes, but plenty of ways to float in the water. kids found a different thrill than downhill skiing as they tried body boarding for the first time. >> indoor water park is definitely a boom for us in the season when we are behind with the weather.
