to our weather now, didn't need a winter koecoat, but we'l cool down a bit thanks to rain headed our way, raindrops starting to fall a short time ago. chief blonmeteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now, glenn? >> the rain's not really going to cool things down a whole lot, but we did set records throughout the area today. we have some rain across the area now. you can see it moving in just during the past couple of hours. generally on the lighter side, little bit heavier up towards the pocono mountains, as you can see, little bit of the yellow there and also a little bit of yellow headed towards chester county at the moment. this is north of allentown, for the more significant rain falling. poconos should see more rain than anybody else. over the next couple of hours, showers actually diminish somewhat, generally on the lighter side, we're not expe expecting thunderstorms, certainly not any flood threat

or anything like that. the last comes through around 1:00 in the morning. still incredibly warm out there, generally in the mid 60s, even in the upper 50s in the poconos, and these are records that were set today. this is the old records, one in philadelphia was set in 1881, and look at the one in allentown. broken by eight degrees. which is just amazing. as we go through the night tonight, we've got showers coming in, but the temperature really is not going to be dropping very much, so if you're out, you're not going to need any kind of heavy coat, even tomorrow morning it's going to be on the mild side, but we do have a cold blast in the seven day. i'll tell you more about that coming up in a few minutes. as i track the showers, you can track them, too. get the free nbc 10 news app. >> new lawsuit for bill cosby, but tonight he's the one filing suit against women who sued him. nbc 10's denise nakano is here now to explain this latest legal move.

denise? >> today bill cosby filed counterclaims in federal court in massachusetts. he's suing seven women for defamation, accusing them of making false accusations of sexual misconduct for financial gain. the women claim cosby's reps branded them as liars when they went public with allegations of rape dating back decades. cosby's countersue claims the women made malicious, false, and defamatory accusations against him. he now wants money from them. the lawyer from the women in this case say scores of women come forward with abuse and he singled out seven, he says it sounds a bit like retaliation. the women are among about 50 who accused the comedian of rape or unwanted sexual conduct. he's never been charged with any crime. jim? >> denise, thank you. a home owner was shot during a break-in this afternoon in northeast philadelphia. a man kicked in the back door of a home here around 2:00. police say he shot the man who lives here once in the leg and

then got away. the victim's in the hospital tonight. today marks three years since children were massacred inside sandy hook elementary school. and these are the faces of the children parents lost that day. since then even more children have been murdered by guns, and these flags represent someone killed by a gun in a mass shooting since that date. today, one local congressman renewed his push to remove the gun show loophole on background checks. there's still strong opposition, though, aundrea cline-thomas reports. >> reporter: drive along west bridge street in morrisville and these flags may stop you in your tracks, at least that's the hope. >> these are somebody's kids and grand kids. >> reporter: each flag represents a life lost in mass shootings since sandy hook, 1,289 flags to be exact. >> a lot of us thought, well, surely this will be the turning point in our history. >> reporter: three years later, the push continues for gun

control legislation. >> continually try to make laws that only burden the law-abiding. >> reporter: one representative is reintroducing his proposal for universal background checks that would close the loophole for the private sale of long guns. >> it's what all responsible gun owners do, it's what 90% of our citizens support. >> reporter: mike volb isn't one of them, he doesn't believe the proposal will stop crime. >> nobody's running around robbing the local 7-eleven with a hunting rifle. >> reporter: one look at these flags renews his sense of urgency that something needs to be done. >> so much pressure keeping things the way they are, that we as citizens need to stay in the streets and stay on our legislators and stay in our local community groups pushing for change for safe gun laws. >> reporter: in bucks county, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. an update from president obama on the fight against isis today. the commander in chief says the u.s. military is hitting the

islamic state group harder than ever. the president met with his national security team this morning at the pentagon. president obama says isis' leaders cannot hide and the group is losing its stronghold, he says, in syria and iraq. >> the point is, isil leaders cannot hide and our next message to them is simple, you are next. every day we destroy, as well, more of isil's forces. >> reporter: tomorrow secretary of state john kerry will be in russia to work to end the civil war in syria. the president says the u.s. is killing isis leaders one by one, "nbc nightly news" with lester holt will have a full report on the mission at 6:30 right after this newscast. meantime, new at 6:00, there's already debate about whether to put new casinos in north jersey, now there's a debate about who should own those casinos. there's already a bill in the assembly that would require both new casino licenses go to companies that already own a casino, but today lawmakers unveiled a new bill that would

only apply the requirement to one of the licenses. lawmakers would have to pick one of the bills, then in november voters will decide if the state issues the new licenses. tonight we're getting our first look at the suspect in a carjacking outside a south jersey liquor store. investigators say christopher dumas stole an suv with two children inside saturday night. police say this surveillance video shows dumas crossing white horse pike in magnolia before jumping into the suv. happened around 11:00 saturday night. dumas was arrested after police say he hit another suv, flipped over, and crashed into a house. the children ages 8 and 10 had minor cuts and bruises. their mom had been in the liquor store when the suv was stolen. tonight, new details about the estranged husband now charged with two murders. police say gilbert rochester killed his 80-year-old mother-in-law as she left her smyrna house for church yesterday morning. rochester allegedly stabbed mary

lane outside the house minutes later. rochester and lane were in the process of getting a divorce. a new political poll out today shows donald trump's lead is growing and he's at an all-time high. the monmouth university poll took the pulse of voters from thursday through sunday. donald trump now leads with 41%. the race for second is tighter, ted cruz now in second with 14%, marco rubio has 10%, followed by ben carson with 9%. cruz and rubio are surging, while carson is dropping from previous polls. chris christie is tied for seventh with 2%. by the way, the new jersey governor will be on the main stage for tomorrow night's gop debate. philadelphia mayor-elect jim kenney added another member to his new leadership team today. today kenney tapped a city solicitor. he oversees the city's law department, he is an assistant u.s. attorney who graduated from northeast high school, came to this country from the republic of congo back in 1983. city council will vote on the appointment when it returns to session coming up in january.

some high-tech help is on the way for drivers navigating pennsylvania's roads. the state announced a partnership between penndot and the navigation app called waze. waze users will get rel time information about crashes, conditions, as well as construction. philadelphia schools may need to find a new way to come up with money to stay open after the new year because of the budget battle. the school district is borrowing money to operate and only has enough for the rest of this month, but now standard & poor's has withdrawn its ratings because it says the district doesn't have a reliable and stable source of money, means the district could have a harder time getting a loan. two, one -- [ applause ] >> budget battle in harrisburg didn't stop a holiday tradition at the state capitol, though. this afternoon governor and mrs. wolf hit the switch to light the capitol christmas tree. the noon event was timed so

this is nbc 10 news. >> new video you're seeing frirs on nbc 10 shows three violent gas station assaults in a little more than a week. police in burlington township and burlington city are teaming up to catch the crook who's assaulted three gas station attendants and made off with nearly $2,000. the most recent crime happened on high and fourth streets at us gas. a week ago saturday colleagues said the man broke his nose and he's since left his job. falls township has been working to improve the water

quality, it blames old and rusty pipes for the problem. nbc 10's deanna durante reports on how crews are working on a temporary fix. >> reporter: residents say they've been told that this water is harmless, yet it's not something they want to bathe in or even drink. >> i had my water heater cleaned four times this year, which is more than most people do. there hasn't been any change. >> reporter: amy fox says she understands work being done today is an effort to fix a problem she says has been going on for years. >> we thought it was the water, the water tank, so about a year after living here we replaced the water tank, and we're still having problems. >> it's considered a nuisance, and at lower levels it's not a health hazard, but it is discolored water and none of us want to see that in our drinking water. >> reporter: the authority of falls township is currently testing two types of water main cleaning. today they were a block away from the fox home. the township says the rusty water is due to iron pipes and would like to replace or line

them all, but it's not feasible right now. the money just is not there. the department is scrubbing mains as a temporary fix, but last week's fix she says created a bigger mess with sludge ending up inside the houses. >> they said it's harmless, but my argument is i'm not going to be given a service that's going to hurt me in any way, but i have to bathe my son in that every day, i have to bathe in it, my husband does, i cook in it, wash my clothes in it, it stains everything. i have a sludge in my pipes. >> this was the result of an aggressive cleaning project that we had done last week on that street, and there are ways to clean that up, and we've offered that if any expense has been incurred by any residents, they could send us a bill. >> reporter: residents say they've already cleaned their hot water heater, even after the repair work is done, they say this is still the same result and they want to see permanent pipe work finished here in the area. deanna durante, nbc 10 news.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we continue to be on pace for the warmest december ever recorded in this area, and it's not just in this area. a lot of the country is incredibly warm. record three days in a row now in philadelphia, the most recent record broken from 1881. we're tracking some showers moving through the area right now, and a cold blast, a cold blast, it's only going to last a couple of days. we have cloudy skies now, there's a little bit of light rain reported. 65 degrees, the winds out of the south at 13 miles an hour, and the rain is not cooling things down any. it's still in the mid to even upper 60s right now in most places, 68 in bensalem, 58 in wilmington, one of the cool spots. rain's a little bit heavier there, and the records three

days in a row in philadelphia, two days of them of 70 plus, then we drop tomorrow to 62, but the average is 45, so that's a mere 17 degrees above average. other parts of the country have been up to 30 degrees above average. now you can see the mild air retreating as we go toward the end of the week and the cold air's in over the weekend, and looks like it's right in here, finally, december-like weather for those of you looking for the cold, but you're not going to see it very long. here's next week, just as we head towards christmas eve and christmas day, some incredibly warm weather, and i would not be surprised if we have more record warmth for that period. christmas eve, christmas day of all times. now you can see the area of rain increasing a bit as we go through chester county and upper bucks and montgomery, the lehigh valley, relatively brief and you can see drier air already coming

in behind it. the poconos had a little bit of heavier rain, but even there it's already tapering off. and back to the west, there's the drier air, so if you got some decent rain now, it's not going to last. and the big portion of this storm you can see the circulation here across the great lakes, that's moving up into canada and even raining in much of michigan, middle of december. so the future cast showing the showers coming through the area, and then later on tonight after 2:00 a.m., that's the front itself with the last of the showers, that's going to clean things out. sunshine returning, lower humidity, no pollution, and kind of windy. sunshine tomorrow morning. different type of day than what we saw. but it's not going to be that much colder like it showed. 62 degrees for the high, and 50s in the morning. but as we go towards wednesday

and thursday, things are going to change. wednesday not so much, but thursday another system comes in from the west. this one will have more significant rain with it. look at that, some of that heavier rain coming in on thursday, especially in delaware and south jersey. unseasonably warm tonight with those showers. only 56 for the low in philadelphia, even north and west only 53. highs in the low 60s tomorrow. dry and look at the wind gusts at 35 miles an hour. still mild wednesday and thursday, even thursday in the rain. friday we start cooling down, and yeah, it's going to feel cold over the weekend. the eagles, 25 degrees colder than yesterday's game, then we warm up again. student inventors from our area showed off their work today, and guess who was there to see it, couple of eagles, signing some autographs. stepping stone scholar students built and designed the robots as
