rubio who really want to have a debate in our party and country about the best way to keep america safe, the best way to enter the new phase in the war against terror so after paris and after san bernardino instead of talking about bringing technology companies into the fold, instead of whether we need a new intel package of laws like we did with the patriot act after 9/11, we talked for ten days about trump's muslim ban. >> i have to say when you see a poll and another one, monmouth poll, that has trump at 41%, you ask yourself why are we even talking about any other candidate because it's so monumental in terms of his lead. let's talk about some. other candidates. ted cruz is the one who seems to have the momentum right now. has he played this campaign just perfectly? >> you know, he's the only example in the entire field of the 14 left, for who organization, planning and discipline has mattered. he's run a superb campaign, completely disciplined. now the knock on ted cruz, and there's a pretty devastating piece in the "wall street

journal" today by brett stevens, is that one should doubt his intelligence but we have to ask serious questions about his character because a lot of his positions, particularly on foreign policy, are calculations. >> do you think in any way that ted cruz is the current version of carly fiorina and ben carson? each one of them rose quickly and fell sharply. is ted cruz that type of a candidate, or does he have staying power? >> i think ted cruz has staying power and something really important in the republican grass roots happened yesterday, in the fight between trump and cruz, rush limbaugh, very widely listened to and respected conservative radio host, mark levine, not quite wide lly listened to, both defended cruz in the trump/cruz cage match. >> which is interesting because the way he chose to take on cruz in the issue of temperament and how he doesn't get along with anyone fed into what a lot of conservative media about ted cruz.

>> exactly. they finally found their breaking point and whether the far right has broken up with trump. they have always doubted his true conservative credentials, but whether they have broken up with him and putting all the force that have conservative talk radio and the grass roots operation behind cruz is a question mark. >> this is the last debate of this year. 48 days to go until iowa. is this the last stand for any candidate, or will this entire pack move forward, at least until iowa? >> well, i think they can get another look for themselves in iowa, but i think what happens is most people with kids, kids are out of school friday and they stop having time to really follow this, so i think like a jell-o mold it sort of firms in place on friday and i don't think people pull it out and take another look at it the until after the holiday. >> do you think all of them stay and will be on the debate stage the next debate in january? >> i was wrong in predicting that it would shrink after a couple of debates. i don't think the debates are the factor that's winnowing the field,led polls that show these guys way, way, way, way down in

the polls at 1%, 2%, 3% and the money dries out. that will push people out. >> the one more note on donald trump. his personal physician apparently cut from the same cloth as the republican front-runner because you've got to hear this statement released by the trump campaign. dr. harold bornstein and this is a quote. if elected, mr. trump, can i state unequivocally will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency. the doctor also said the candidate's physical strength and stamina are extraordinary and his recent lab test results were, quote, astonishingly excellent. the statement makes good on trump's pledge earlier this month to release his medical record, and he promise that had they would, in fact, show, quote, perfection. >> i've got to get a new doctor, no question. on the other side. aisle democratic front-runner hillary clinton is planning a preemptive strike against the bat rafnlg criticism she's expecting from her republican rivals on the stage tonight so today she will make her case on how to take on the isis threat. nbc's kristen welker is in

minneapolis with that part of the story. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. secretary clinton won't be on that debate stage but she will try to pre-butt the republican candidates and is going to try to paint herself as adult in the room when it comes to national security, that's, of course, a top issue for voters. you might remember last month secretary clinton rolled out her strategy to defeat isis in the me. here at the university of minnesota today she's going to detail final part of that plan. how to defend the country here at home. she's going to point to minnesota's robust plan to counter violent extremism which has plagued this area and clinton will detail her strategy to counter an attack from san bernardino from, quote, from recruitment to training to planning to execution all while staying true to our values. clinton will aim to draw a sharp contrast with the entire republican field, especially donald trump, who, of course, called for banning all muslims from entering the united states. clinton has called that type of

rhetoric dangerous to national security. now, our latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll showed clinton leads donald trump and ted cruz in a general election matchup. she also has a strong lead in her own primary. the next big test for democrats will come on saturday when they face off in their own debate in new hampshire. matt, savannah, back to you. >> kristen welker in minneapolis, kristen, thanks. to a major about face in the case against one of the most controversial american figures in the american military, former prisoner of war bowe bergdahl is facing a court-martial and the potential of life in prison less than two years after the obama administration traded five taliban detainees for bergdahl's release. nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is following this for us. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was just last summer that president obama welcomed bowe bergdahl home, insisting that america never leaves a soldier behind, but now amidst mounting pressure from the republicans the u.s. military says if it has its way america's last prisoner of war could soon be headed to

jail. in this tense 2014 handover, sergeant bergdahl got his freedom and now in a twist of fate perhaps only to trade his taliban captivity for an american prison. >> i'm going, good grefrks i'm in over my head. >> reporter: bergdahl is mounting his public defense on the popular podcast serial. >> i was fully confident that people would understand that i was right. >> reporter: but soon he'll have to make his case in a military court, even as it becomes an issue for donald trump again monday night. >> i hear there's not going to be jail time. it's incredible, you know. 50 years ago what would have happened? boom. >> reporter: bergdahl is now facing a court-martial on charges of desertion and endangering the safety of fellow soldiers. after walking off his army outpost in afghanistan. he claims a misguided effort to challenge himself and his commanders. >> i was trying to prove to the world that i was, i don't know, jason bourne. >> reporter: desertion charges against him even more severe than the army's own investigator

recommended. bergdahl now an attack line for leading republicans. >> we traded senior terrorist leaders for someone who is right now being tried for effectively deserting his troops. that makes no sense >> reporter: obama administration is left defending a deal that fell apart almost from the start. >> the beau is coming sneem even as the president brought his parents to the rose garden congressional republicans were furious about a trade that released five taliban prisoners from guantanamo bay, now the last prisoner american of war could spend the rest of his life behind bars. >> let's fly him over and we'll dump him right in the middle and throw him out of the play. shall we give him a parachute or not? i say no. >> reporter: for now sergeant bergdahl remains on active duty in ft. bragg, north carolina where the army says he'll be arraigned at a later date. as for the taliban prisoners the white house says they are being closely tracked, supposedly under house arrest in the persian gulf country of qatar. savannah, matt? >> amichel, thank you.

a lot of eyes on washington today as federal reserve begins its last meeting of the year, and this is a big one. the fed is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate for the first time in almost a decade when that meeting wraps up tomorrow. the key short-term interest rate has been close to zero since december of 2008. that's when the country slid into recession. a rate hike would signal confidence in the u.s. economy but some investors worry it may actually slow growth. >> a new government policy that goes into effect is causing turbulence among drone owners. starting next monday people will be required to register their drones with the faa and pay a $5 fee. penalties for failing to do that could reach more than $27,000. the new rules are designed to help curb the growing dangers that drones pose to commercial aircraft, but not everybody is happy about it. one drone advocacy group says the $5 fee may deter users from registering. want to bring you an update to a story we've been following i think since last september. a former assistant high school

football coach accused of ordering his players to hit a referee during a game has now plead guilty to assault. a judge sentenced mack bree to 18 months of probation and ordered him to serve 120 hours of community service. he'll also have to pay restitution to referee robert watts who was targeted by two players from the san antonio high school this past season. officials say he also has to forfeit his texas teaching certificate permanently and attend anger management sessions. all right. and now to the frenzy over "star wars, the force awakens" the and the world premiere for the most anticipated movie was held in hollywood. a spectacle complete with storm troopers, droids and some familiar faces from the wildly popular franchise. nbc's joe fryer was there and covered it for us. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. super fans have been waiting in lines, even camping out here at the tcl chinese theater for over

a week. they will see "the force awakens" thursday night but hours ago here in hollywood a lucky few got to see it and are raving about it after the world premiere. ♪ star power was the force on display at this premiere. >> john williams crescendo at the beginning. it's the greatest thing ever >> reporter: franchise's newest faces share the mass of red carpets with legends from a long time ago like harrison ford, carrie fish and mark hamill. >> i mean, it's pinch me time. everything seems to be louder and bigger and busier. >> reporter: on opening weekend analysts predict "the force awakens" to generate at least $150 million to $200 million domestically shattering "the hobbit's" december box office record and when it's all said and doesn't seventh installment of "star wars" could earn between $1.5 and $2 billion worldwide, maybe even more. the highest grossing film of all time is "avatar" at $2.8

billion. >> no movie has made $3 billion worldwide. "the force awakens," a lot of pressure could, it achieve that monumental landmark in terms of box office? we'll have to wait and see. >> reporter: this is the first "star wars" film made without creator george lucas who sold his company to disney for $4 billion, a big project putting a lot of pressure on j.j. abrams speaking with "60 minutes." >> a moment of abject terror of what we're taking on. >> reporter: still the buzz is louder than a light saber. on top of movie tickets, merchandise is expected to brick in billions with everything from high heels to humid fires hitting the shelves. at brand new alamo draft house cinema in omaha the decor is totally inspired by "star wars." >> literally was like, whoa, i need to get tickets here. >> got me on the ropes. >> reporter: at that line outside the chinese theater caroline ritter and andrew porter plan to we had right before they see the movie. >> it's got three important things here.

been telling you about and showing you. a guy intentionally plowing his truck into the front desk of a hotel in oklahoma. natalie's got more on this story. >> it is crazy and that's an understatement, but the man was reportedly upset about his bill. the hotel clerk thought he was bluffing when he threatened to crash through the lobby. shocking new video released monday shows the heart stopping moments for two employees at an oklahoma hotel after a disgruntled guest trashed his truck into the front desk. the driver identified by police as john edward parsley can at first be seen talking with the police officer last thursday outside the alva comfort inn and suites about 110 miles northwest of oklahoma city. surveillance video then shows parsley crashing his 2006 sierra gmc through the hotel entrance and into the front desk as two women frantically dive for safety. parsley backs up the truck, stops and then pulls back into the lobby.

he says something to the women, gets out of truck and calmly walks back to the entrance with his hands raised. the 62-year-old man was reportedly upset that the his credit card had been declined twice. according to a local newspaper parsley told police he drove into the hotel because hotel staff thought he was bluffing and he proved he wasn't. no one was injured, but the lobby of the alva comfort inn and suites was severely damage the. parsley from gonzalez, texas, was held on $1 million bond monday night on two felony counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of malicious injury to property. i mean works does something like that? but now he's facing felony charges. >> wow. >> the what is the world coming to? >> i don't know. >> stories where you just can't react. there's nothing to say. let's get check of the weather from dylan. the well, it's warmer in the

in las vegas monday that saw conflicts break out among members of the crowd. on stage tonight he'll face texas senator ted cruz who has surged into first place in iowa, and new jersey governor chris christie who is making gains in new hampshire. democrat hillary clinton is unveiling her strategy today for battling domestic terrorism. she wants to disrupt each step that can lead to an attack, including the recruitment and training of extremists. secretary clinton is speaking in minneapolis where she says local officials have already made a strong effort to combat home-grown radicals. secretary of state john kerry is taking the fight against isis to moscow where shemeeting today with russian president vladimir putin. the u.s. and russia are still at odds over how to end the civil war in syria. the chaos resulting from that war has helped isis establish a power base in the region. a new study has link the the use of a certain type of anti-depressant to dramatic increase in the risk for autism.

nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie azar is here to explain what this means for women. dr. natalie, we know taking anti-depressants during pregnancy can be harmful to the baby but this study says what types of anti-depressants you take and when you take those anti-depressants can be of most harm for autism. >> the conclusions for the study is that the use of ssris, prozac, zoloft, paxil, those types of medicines, particularly in the second and third trimester can significantly increase the risk of having autism spectrum disorder your child. most of the experts we reached tout are really urging caution when interpreting these results for a number of reasons. number one, again, the relative risk number was kind of frightning, 87%. the absolute risk, on the other hand, was actually quite low, less than 2% risk. secondly, and this is also really important and talked about this many times, an association or correlation between two things does not prove causation. that's incredibly important. >> right. >> and finally, and i think maybe most importantly is the issue of maternal depression.

i really have a heart for people who have lost someone or somebody who is grieving. you wish you could hug those peel. you wish you could say i understand, and when you lose somebody, the holidays take on this whole new significance. this is the first christmas for the hoban family without their beloved mother. tom hoban's wife jen, mother to meg answer, katie and t.j., lost her battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this year. how has this year been? how has this kind of adjustment been? >> it's definitely rough, but we have a lot of family members and friends who are helping, and we always know she's still with us. >> how about for you, t.j.? >> i feel like t.j. everybody else has a parent and you're here with just one but you get through it. >> and also trying to get through a new routine without her. >> i remember when my dad passed away, the first christmas was really hard because he did love

christmas so much and his birthday was on christmas, and are you looking forward to christmas, or is there a part of you that it's a little bit hard to? >> it's going to be a little bit rough because we'd always open up the family presents in the morning with mom and she's not going to be there. >> there will always be a huge void without jen. she would want us to laugh and have fun and not -- just to remember and not be sad. >> the tom turned to the comfort zone camp, a nonprofit that provides support nationwide for children who have lost a parent or sibling. ♪ rudolph the red-nosed reindeer ♪ >> what we're going to do is go around in a circle and say a one-word pulse check for where we're at right now to how we're feeling. >> connected. >> fantastic. >> happy. >> loved. >> eger. >> peaceful. >> blessed. >> honored. >> i thought it was really helpful like you're not only one going through all this. there's other people there, too. >> megan, what are some of your favorite christmas memories i

the stage tonight. 38% right now saying they would support trump. ted cruz at 15% and marco rubio and ben carson each with 12%. now at an event last night donald trump apparently heckled by protesters who were escorted out by security. there's video we aired as well this morning during the news, and you see this. got very ugly. there was some hateful rhetoric being yelled out by people there. we don't know, you know, obviously who these people were, but it got very ugly which is the concern so many have with some of what trump is saying on the campaign trail that's not only been criticized by democrats but his fellow republicans as well. yesterday trump also released his personal physician's i guess statement on his health, if you can call it that. it was released by the campaign. the letter starts out, quote, to whom my concern.
