police haven't given their official theory and she doesn't know for sure if this is a hate crime. she gave me this picture and said homeland security was out investigating, she also tells me her 25-year-old son tyree is a muslim and was out praying yesterday because it was so warm. that's the only connection she can make to the meat that ended up on her step. not happy about this, neither are her neighbors. tyree's little brother not happy either, and that's exactly what he told police. >> i told them i didn't want it to happen again. can you all get it over with. i don't want it to happen to nobody else. >> reporter: come back live, you can see a police officer on the street of the home, this is where the people lived that had the meat placed on their step. we understand tyree who was just here a couple minutes ago and took off, he was with police all day. he says there's a warrant they are serving at the house and police just told me a couple minutes ago they are not investigating this as a hate crime, they are investigating as what they call a domestic incident. we're not sure what that means

and are told more details are coming out, but this is a reason this is taking a long time, but they said it's not what it appears to be on the surface and they are going to come forward with more details and we'll keep working to get to the details for you. live, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> as you may know, this incident comes a week after someone threw a pig's head at a north philadelphia mosque. someone in a pickup truck tossed the animal's head at the building. no one has been arrested in this case and just today delaware county police force showed its support for the muslim community. >> the police department stood side by side with muslim leaders. the police superintendent says the department has worked with the islamic community to address concerns and today was the day he wanted to go public with their relationship. muslims were there to denounce isis and affirm their status as americans. >> several leaders supported plans and freedoms.

that's why we are here and we are proud to be called americans. >> the islamic center in upper darby opened an invitation for the community to visit the center and order the mosque. now for a story on the east and west coast, country's two largest school districts appeared to get the same threatening message but reacted in opposite ways. los angeles shut down every school in its district while new york opted not to do so because they believed the threat wasn't credible. denise nakano is live with more on the threat and the conflicting responses to it. denise? >> reporter: jim, police in los angeles say the e-mail threat that shut down the school district described an assault with assault rifles. as a result, more than 1,000 schools in l.a. were closed today. the threat was sent to a school board member. one politician who saw it said the writer claims to be a muslim extremist and said the threat

was a hoax. the threat raised fears of another attack like the one in nearby san bernardino earlier this month. new york officials say they received the same threat but found there was nothing credible about it. they say los angeles school officials overreacted, but l.a. officials are defending their decisions to close down schools. >> abundance of caution is something that i think all of us who have children appreciate. >> we do believe preliminary investigation that this is, in fact, a hoax and we'll investigate it as such. >> officials are still determining if schools there will reopen tomorrow. as for why new york officials believe the threat to be a prank, they say the center made several errors, for one, the word allah was spelled with a lower case "a." denise nakano, nbc 10 news. now to our jersey shore bureau, where there's a mystery swirling in the case of a missing cape may county

teenager. nicole an's mother issued her missing two weeks ago. they found a body but can't confirm if it is, indeed, the missing girl. cydney long is live with more on today's discovery. >> reporter: jacqueline, i can tell you that loved ones of this missing teenager were here at the crime scene earlier today and four police agencies have come together to process the scene. take a look behind us, you can see the entire block of first street blocked off with crime tape. investigators have been in and out of the home all afternoon carrying bags of evidence. we also noticed they seem to be focused on the pool behind this red fence. >> i'm just going to tell you this, we'll probably be here for hours and hours gathering the evidence, because it's quite an exhaustive search. >> reporter: prosecutor robert taylor is holding details about a white female discovered inside the basement of this abandoned

home close to the vest. he says it was the missing persons search for 15-year-old nicole angstadt that brought detectives here, but he is not identifying the body. >> looks like it might be a pretty bad crime scene. it's scary, because you don't know what happened. >> reporter: police will not say if the death is a result of a murder or foul play. today crime scene detectives carried out evidence bags and a diver, according to neighbors, was in the home's pool. >> little scary when you see them going through a pool and cutting out the drainpipes of a house, so they are looking in the plumbing. >> reporter: a neighbor says detectives spent yesterday afternoon showing neighbors nicole's photo ahead of units focusing on this house. taylor says counselors from his office, the victims advocates, did console people at the scene earlier today. can you confirm that consoling was to her family, the missing teenager here? cape may county? >> i don't want to confirm

seven day, along with heavy rain and the timing on both coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues now with a warning to people who live or work in center city, philadelphia. a stranger slashed two people in separate attacks this morning. the first happened around 5:30 where a man was slashed in the hand. 30 minutes later a man was slashed in the face at 23rd and walnut. nbc 10's rosemary connors talked to police today about a connection. rosemary, you saw video of one of those incidents. what did you see? >> reporter: i did, jim. a local restaurant owner showed me surveillance video which he has passed along to police. here's what i saw, a man dressed for work was walking along the sidewalk here on 21st street when he passed the alleged attacker. the attacker made some kind of a remark to the man, possibly yelling an obscenity, then the victim kept walking, but that's when the attacker decided to go after him, slashing his face. as you mentioned, this was the

second report of a slashing in center city just this morning. >> seems like they could be the same suspect involved in both situations based on description of the individual. >> reporter: the attacker slashed his first victim here at 23rd and walnut streets around 5:30 this morning. police sources tell us the victim was jogging and after the encounter suffered wounds to his torso and hands but was stable when he went to the hospital. robbery does not appear to be a motive. >> something that's disturbing when you see somebody slashing the face of people out there for no apparent reason and they don't know this individual. >> reporter: the second slashing happened near 21st and arch streets before 6:00 this morning. police have surveillance video of the attacker from this incident. neighbors at this business residential area are disturbed, but not necessarily surprised. >> i'm not scared, just aware, more aware, more wary of comings and goings. >> i've been a resident for 22 years, and i love living in the city, but it's really scary when

there's any time of day you feel you have to be on guard. >> reporter: as i mentioned, philadelphia police do have that video of the suspect in this case. they are hoping to turn that surveillance video around in the next few hours or so. we'll try to get that for you at 5:00. reporting live in center city, rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. a driver is in police custody after a hit-and-run crash involving a 1-year-old baby. the crash happened at the corner of 66th street and haverford avenue. a car hit the man, the baby fell out of the stroller, was not seriously hurt. the man and the dog are okay, too. police arrested the driver on suspicion of dui. the son of a former new jersey military couple says his parents should get the maximum sentence for abusing his younger siblings. the son speaking today at a sentencing hearing for john and carolyn jackson. the jacksons were convicted in

july on several counts of child endangerment. prosecutors say the couple's three foster children, all toddlers, were left with broken bones and health problems. we'll bring more information to you as soon as we get it. word just in from baltimore. jurors say they are deadlocked in the trial of the first police officer charged in the death of freddie gray, but the judge has told them to keep deliberating. the jury got the case yesterday in the trial of william porter. that is porter on the right. he faces several charges, including manslaughter. prosecutors say william porter was negligent for failing to buckle gray into a transport van and failing to call for a medic when gray asked to go to a hospital. instead gray was taken to the police station and arrived with a broken neck. his death erupted protests and rioting in baltimore. five more officers are awaiting trial. 400 people will be losing their jobs just days after the holidays.

mack trucks incorporated announced the layoffs today. the job cuts take effect january 25th. officials with mack trucks say demand for trucks is down and that's to blame for the layoffs. the plant has more than 1,800 workers. philadelphia's making it easier for people with criminal records to have a fair chance of finding a job. today mayor nutter signed an update to the city's ban the box bill. that bill prevents employers from asking job applicants to disclose their criminal history by checking off a box asking about arrest records. the bill now applies to all city employers, both public and private. until now, only employers with ten or more workers had to follow the regulation. >> they want to work, they don't want to go back to the hopeless, dead end world that landed them in prison in the first place. >> the changes also prevent employers from looking back on an applicant's record any further than seven years. previously there was no limit.

seven years. live look here at ininterstate 95 in south philadelphia, already packed this afternoon. the highways will be packed in the coming days, as well. aaa saying about 90% of philadelphians will drive to their destination for the holidays. nationwide the number of holiday travelers is expected to top 100 million for the first time ever. it's about a 1.5% increase from last year, about 91 million will travel on the roads, just under 6 million will fly. low gas prices are one of the major reasons for an uptick in travel. the national average just about $2 a gallon. in new jersey, though, the average $1.85 a gallon. pennsylvania it's $2.25 and delaware $2. before you hit the road, you have to get those gifts out. coming up at 4:30 we're going to show you what's slowing down shipments this holiday season and getting packages to their final destination later than expected.

i don't think you can blame the weather for that, great traveling weather out there and that will continue throughout the eastern united states, all the way through the christmas holiday. we're tracking some heavy rain, though, that's going to come before the end of the week, then a cold blast over the weekend, but next week we're going to be setting some more warm temperature records, including possibly christmas eve. stay tuned for more on that. you can see we've got a lot of sunshine out there now. it's been a windy day, but not especially cold. 59 degrees and 18 mile an hour wind, 10 degrees colder than this time yesterday, and we have set four records in a row. today's record just after midnight, and it counts, it's a 24-hour day in the weather world. and two days of 70 plus and we're not done with this stuff. remember, the average high is 45, and even at this hour we're well above that, even in the

cold spots like pottstown at 52, reading 53, coatesville 53, doylestown 54. 57 in wilmington and some of these places got into the 70s yesterday, so it's a little bit cooler, but we've gone from 25 degrees above normal to 15 degrees above normal. and that offshore wind makes the beaches just as warm as the inland areas. so we're about 10, 12 degrees colder than at this time yesterday. northeast philly is 13 degrees colder. but there's a long way to go to get back to normal. you can see the northwest wind here, the sustained winds 10 to 20 miles an hour, not quite as strong as an hour ago in most areas. now that wind eventually is going to bring in some colder air. not so much tomorrow or even thursday with the rain, but here comes some of that cold air for saturday. and into sunday. just in time for the weekend. but it's not going to last.

this is nbc 10 news. >> have you seen this? a disgruntled hotel guest facing felony charges after ramming his pickup truck right into the hotel lobby here in oklahoma. the truck barely missed two women behind the hotel desk right there. the driver was reportedly upset that his credit card had been declined twice, he told the hotel staff he drove into the lobby because they thought he was bluffing and he proved he wasn't. the driver is being held now on a million dollars bond. you're going to want to take a look at this next video. authorities say it shows the woman kicking a florida highway patrol officer at a dmv building. the officer was trying to remove the woman from the building last thursday after she argued with workers. cell phone video show her kick the officer in the groin, he is eventually able to place her under arrest. she faces several charges. five people faced charges

after a demonstration near the rockefeller center christmas tree in new york. you can see the people scuffling with police during last night's demonstration. police are saying several of them were threatening to climb the tree. the demonstrators were protesting a deadly police shooting in chicago that's caused widespread unrest in that city. the woman accused of assaulting a gay couple in center city took the stand in her own defense today. >> what kathryn knott said to jurors during her testimony and the witness that could help clear her name. if you've waited to ship those holiday packages, you better get them in now. the big shippers are running behind. that story coming up.

this is nbc 10 news. >> a young woman charged with taking part in a group assault on a gay couple in philadelphia told jurors she never hit them or shouted slurs at them. >> kathryn knott took the stand in her own defense today. deanna durante was in the courtroom for testimony today. she's joining us in center city with more on what happened in court. deanna? >> reporter: well, court has adjourned for the day. less than ten minutes ago kathryn knott walked out with her family. she'll be back tomorrow and the jury will get the case in the morning. kathryn knott told a jury she didn't do anything wrong, she told them she was trying to break up a fight. prosecutors say knott, the daughter of a police chief, bragged on social media with her dad's connections and used her own post to dispute her testimony. a possible blow for the defense when a long-time friend of knott told the jury she knows her as law-abiding. that remark allowed prosecutors to show a tweet not posted about

having her dad issue a ticket in a traffic incident his daughter was involved in. also shown to the jury, the men severely injured in the assault and early in the trial one was forced to have a broken jaw wired shut. two men took a plea deal, they have to complete community service and are banned for center city for the length of their probation. in two-hour closing statements the defense and prosecutors told a different story about knott's alleged behavior that night. the defense says knott was standing there, walked away with the two men who pleaded guilty and she did nothing wrong, however, prosecutors point to several witnesses that say to the court that they saw a woman in a white dress throw a punch during that fight. again, the jury will be charged in the morning and begin deliberations some time after that. reporting live outside the criminal justice center, deanna

durante, nbc 10 news. new information on a deadly shooting at a walmart in the poconos. state police say officers were justified in shooting the armed suspect. police say andrew todd showed up saturday night threatening customers with two guns and a machete. police shot todd in the chest when he refused to drop the weapons. todd died at a hospital. there were about 100 people in the hospital at the time of the incident, no one was hurt. police and the fbi need your help finding this bank robbery suspect. take a close look if you can, the man has a heavily bandaged left hand, wearing a sixers hat and robbed a bank in frankford yesterday. the man handed a teller a note demanding money, then ran off with some cash. no one was hurt. zblfrlg investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire this morning. the fire broke out at an empty store front. no one was hurt. have you looked at the

this is nbc 10 news. >> getting shingles later in life could increase your risk for stroke. researchers followed the health of adults over the age of 50 who had a history of the virus. people who had shingles also were in overall worse health. experts say adults can try to prevent the virus with the shingles vaccine. a frightening medical mystery for a toddler and his parents. they thought he had the flu, but he ended up losing his fingers and toes. liam young's dad took him to the hospital two months ago with flu-like symptoms. a couple days later he hadn't gotten better and was flown to the university of iowa hospital for diagnosis but doctors there were at a loss, too, and had to amputate all of liam's fingers and toes. >> the best answer we got was he ended up getting the flu and his immune system didn't know how to respond to it, so it started

you're going to see the camera shaking here. 59 degrees, the wind is sustained at 18 miles an hour. and the temperatures are in the 50s most places, 47 in mount pocono, and they've been way too warm to even make snow. and you can see close to 60 degrees in dover, atlantic city, and in millville. that mild air is going to be moving out, and the cold air comes in, but not really until friday, and then it peaks on saturday. and saturday night. we actually get below the freezing mark officially in philadelphia for the first time this season, but not that deep of cold and not long lasting cold, that's for sure, because by monday the mild air is already starting to return. by tuesday we're already to 60. by wednesday we may be getting record warmth. by thursday, most likely record warmth, at least in parts of the area. we're talking 60s and maybe even

70 degrees before the end of next week. and there's christmas day and it's still mild, even up to chicago. records there, too. there's the bit of the north wind, things are quiet. tonight some clouds coming in as we go into tomorrow night. and then thursday morning, that's when some of the rain will start, maybe a little bit of patchy rain for the morning rush, but then a big swath of rain comes through late morning and into the afternoon, may move out in time for the afternoon rush, and then we're setting pretty good shape for friday, although there could be some rain toward the shore, then that colder air comes in for the weekend. how much rain likely to fall? the computer models generally agreeing on the fact that it's going to be a quick hitter and also that the greatest amounts are to the south. this particular model gives parts of delaware and south jersey an inch and a half to two inches and that's in a

relatively short period of time, so we're talking about some pretty heavy rain falling in parts of the area for at least a few hours during the day thursday. mostly clear tonight, colder with the wind diminishing, 42 for the low in philadelphia, 36 north and west, which is not very cold for this time of the year. then tomorrow we're more than ten degrees above average with sunshine and not a lot of wind, so it's going to feel pretty nice. then on thursday here comes the rain. some of it on the heavy side, especially delaware, south jersey. windy and colder everywhere friday and cold over the weekend, especially saturday and saturday night. wind chills back, but just briefly. then gets back up close to 60 monday and well into the 60s starting tuesday. happening right now, another call for justice in the death of brandon brown, this is a live picture from center city right near city hall. these protesters preparing to march to city hall, in fact,

♪ sound pretty good there. america waiting to find out who their votes chose for "the voice" this season. the top four artists sang live for the last time last night. sitting in tonight's audience an air force veteran from philadelphia. >> he won the contest to see "the voice" finale live. nbc 10 was at his house early this morning in southwest philadelphia. he and his guest, monica williams, had their bags packed to fly from philadelphia international to los angeles. he hopes to get to spend some time in hollywood, maybe even meet pharrell. he was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, so he was so excited to receive some good news. >> it brightened my day up yesterday. in other words, i'm ready to get on the plane and go to california. >> he might start singing in the

5:30 this morning and just 30 minutes apart. rosemary connors has been following the search for this attacker. rosemary, you just saw video from one of the incidents. >> i did, denise and jim, we're waiting for police to send out surveillance video, but this is what i saw. in one case here around 21st and arch street, a man wearing a button down shirt, had a cross body briefcase with him looking like he was going to work, coming down the sidewalk here when the alleged attacker passed him, made some kind of remark, the victim kept going but police say the suspect went after him and slashed his face and at this point investigators are baffled by all of this. >> right now, no motive as to why this individual is doing this, but again, something that's disturbing when you see somebody slashing, you know, the faces of people out there for no apparent reason and they don't know this individual. >> reporter: philadelphia police are also investigating whether the attacker is responsible for a second slashing near 23rd and
