re, try puffs softpack. nbc 10 news starts now. new at 11:00, an 82-year-old man murdered, and police say his son is their only suspect. >> a history of problems at a day care where a baby was found unresponsive and later died. how to see what inspectors found at your child care center. but first drone video shows fire consuming a church on the week before christmas. tonight the timing of those flames has people asking questions. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. this is the second fire in just the past two weeks. delaware bureau reporter tim furlong has the story. >> reporter: you can see from an

nbc 10 viewer's drone just how big this fire was at the jerusalem missionary baptist church. the drone was directly overhead when the roof collapsed. >> fire coming out of both sides of the building. minutes after that the front of the building collapsed and everything fell. >> reporter: this is still a very active scene. firefighters not ready to say what started the fire or whether it was intentionally set. neighbors tell me this is the second fire here in the last two weeks. >> i don't even know. i can't fathom two fires within two weeks. unbelievable. >> it's just weird that in two weeks it's on fire again. they just started cleaning it out today. this morning. >> reporter: the church sits next to some niewer homes that were also damaged and across from a lot that was a former chicken restaurant. that was cleared to make way for new affordable housing. its church and its pastor have been at that corner for a long time. >> this church has given a lot of hope to this neighborhood. provided a lot of outreach

through its meal programs and donating different food to the community. >> reporter: the pastor doesn't know where his congregation will meet on sundays. he and lots of his neighbors watching their church burn tonight. many tell me they hope to see a new church built on the same spot. >> it's real sad. >> reporter: in wilmington, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. also new at 11:00, an 82-year-old murdered, someone stabbed him in the head. >> tonight police are questioning the victim's son. randy gyllenhaal is live. >> reporter: police got the 911 call about 3:00 this afternoon. once they got to this home in overbrook, they went to the second floor, and that's where they found the elderly man with multiple stab wounds, and quickly they were able to zero in on a suspect. homicide detectives spent the evening searching for evidence at this overbrook home. and it didn't take long for them to find the murder weapon, a

knife police say was used to kill the 82-year-old victim. >> suffered from two stab wounds, one above his eye and one to the back of his neck. >> reporter: in a tragic twist philadelphia police say the elderly man's own son is in custody. he was home when police arrived on scene and is now the only suspect. >> the 29-year-old son lives here with him. the two reside here. the 29-year-old son has been taken to our homicide division and is currently being investigated for this murder. >> very good people. it's a good family. it's a good family. it's just really sad, you know? >> reporter: neighbors can't believe the brutal murder happened to a family who lived on this block for as long as they can remember. they say the elderly man had recently become terminally ill. his family was caring for him. >> the doctors had given him five to six months to live. >> who has the audacity or who would do something like that to someone, i mean, we think of our parents and stuff like that and especially this time of year?

>> reporter: police say the man's son is being questioned and charges are pending. >> it's really scary, you know, it's really, really scary. >> reporter: at this hour the identities of both the elderly victim and his son have not been released nor has a motive. live in overbrook, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. tonight we have new information about the day care where a baby was found unresponsive this afternoon. inspectors found two dozen problems just months ago. >> we're live at philadelphia police. are police still trying to figure out what happened there? >> reporter: that's right. s svu detectives are still calling the baby's death suspicious. when parents arrived at sister's child care center, they were greeted by police. most had no idea what was going on. are officers telling you anything? >> they're not telling me

nothing. the staff's not telling me nothing. they don't know what's going on. it's just an investigation. >> reporter: detectives stayed at the day care center for hours gathering evidence after a 10-month-old girl in the facility was found unresponsive. a day care director tried performing cpr but the infant died a short time later after being taken to nearby temple hospital. >> i got a baby here. i'm just worried about her, that's all. >> reporter: the day care is operating on a provisional ode of compliance. this after the state department of human services found two dozen areas of concern over the summer. they range from the need for more staff at times to employees not having required state mandated training. some changes were made by october when inspectors returned. and the state accepted the day care's plan to correct the remaining issue. >> they took care of my child, so i don't know what happened. i'm not afraid to leave my son in their care at all. >> reporter: meanwhile, others remain skeptical. >> what are we supposed to do? what are we supposed to do?

let our kids come back here tomorrow? >> reporter: now, parents we spoke with, they need to know the day care would be open tomorrow. detectives hope that an autopsy will help answer some lingering question, but they're still not ruling out the chance that the baby has s.i.d.s. or another medical clinton. andrea kline thomas. >> we posted a link explaining how you can check the records on our nbc 10 app. protesters are marching through the street of baltimore tonight after a judge announced there was a hung jury in the trial of the first officer prosecutpro prosecuted in the death of freddie gray. a jury reached a mistrial after they could not reach a decision in the trial of officer porter. prosecutors argued he was negligent for not buckling in gray to a van. ip stead gray was taken to a

police station. he died a week later from severe spinal injuries. gray's death set off protests and rioting in baltimore, but more officers are awaiting trial and william porter could still be retried. freddie gray's family is calling for patience. >> we ask the public to remain calm, patient, because we're confident there will be another trial with a different jury. we are calm. you should be calm, too. >> tonight's protests in baltimore have been relatively calm. however, two people were arrested for disorderly conduct after the courthouse mistrial was declared. from our jersey shore bureau tonight, the death of a teenaged girl from cape may county is officially a murder case. tonight authorities are holding three men on charges unrelated to the killing. the death of nicole angstadt was ruled a homicide. police found her body in the basement of this township home

on monday. their investigation led to the arrests of three men for a host of other crimes. 32-year-old charles moseley is charged with having sex with angstadt. the two others face robbery charges. the mayor says people in the community are on edge. >> this isn't the same town it used to be. we have the heroin's out of control, you have people telling me there's prostitution going on for money. >> no one's charged with nicole angstadt's murder tonight, police say it was not a random act. traffic is moving again in center city tonight after these taxi drivers brought things to a standstill. the drivers parked their cabs along busy blocks this afternoon. they were protesting uber-x service in the city. the cabbies say uber-x drivers don't have to follow the same rules they do. they want a meeting with the d.a., the mayor, the mayor-elect

and the parking authority. turning to our weather now, a dry noit in center city. where we found coats and jackets, no umbrellas, though. >> but that's about to change. take a look at nbc 10 first alert radar. rain on the way. let's bring in meteorologist sheena parveen. will the rain be here in time for the morning commute? >> yes, in some areas. take your time on the roadways. we'll even see that rain increase through the afternoon. it is slowly moving in this direction. locally, though, we just have the cloud cover around. for the rest of the overnight period, we're going to keep the clouds in the forecast. the rain won't really be here until early tomorrow morning. so here's a look at future weather. there's that big area of moisture across the southeast. overnight it gets closer. and by tomorrow morning, some areas for the morning commute could be dealing with some heavy rain. then even through the afternoon we'll see this increasing, so we are looking at periods of heavy rain through the day tomorrow, but colder temperatures behind

this as we go through the weekend. once this rain is gone, it's actually going to feel a little bit more like winter. so i'll show you the closer look at the timing of the rain and how cold your weekend will get coming up. new at 11:00, a switch to a new regional rail schedule is proving costly for septa. the transit agency printed paper schedules for at least eight regional lines with errors. septa says the costs to reprint the schedules is estimated in the $20,000 range. and a reprint order will take four to six weeks to complete. until then, septa is asking anyone who rides the regional rail line to refer to online schedules only. funding help is on the way for the city of philadelphia ahead of next summer's democratic national convention. $50 million in federal money will be given to the city to offset the cost of extra security for the dnc. an article in the philadelphia business journal says the money is part of a $100 million

federal grant. cleveland, the host of the republican national convention, gets the other half of that grant money. the battle for a pennsylvania budget heats up with a threat by house republicans to governor tom wolf. gop leaders say the governor has until 12:30 to get the votes to pass his plan. if he doesn't, they will vote on an interim plan. pennsylvania has been operating without a budget since july. a new report is questioning the response time of the philadelphia fire department. the national standard for fire response times is 5 minutes, 20 seconds. but according to the city controller, the department missed that mark one out of every four times last year. the controller blames cost cutting measures. the fire department insists it is improving its policies. is your credit card interest rate going up? the big government announcement that could affect your bank account. also grinches stealing your christmas lights. it's a growing trend.

it's a move that could hit our wallets. the federal reserve is raising interest rates after self-years of record los. federal reserve chair janet yellen made the announcement in washington. the fed is raising key interest rates by 0.25%. financial experts say it will mean several things. let's start with the positives. banks will offer slightly higher interest for cash deposits. prices for consumer goods should remain steady, and the dollar could get stronger making purchasing power for meamerican traveling overseas higher. >> this action marks the end of

an extraordinary seven-year period during which the federal funds rate was held near zero to support the recovery of the economy. >> now, on the negative side, it will cost a little more to borrow money for a car or for a home. and credit card interest rates will likely increase, too. otherwise the hike marks a historic milestone as the country rebounds from the crash of the last decade. and wall street responded. stocks ended the day up sharply. the dow closed 220 points higher by the end of business today. a hard to find holiday decoration is a hot item for thieves in south jersey. it's called a star shower. a laser light projector that lights up houses without having to string christmas lights. numerous thefts have been reported actually across the country including eight homes in vineland this past week alone. two sets were swiped from karen alvarez's house. >> we were mad, my husband was

mad because, you know, people should not be doing stuff like that, especially on the holidays. >> star showers start at about $40, but most stores are completely sold out. police believe criminals might be trying to sell stolen ones on craigslist for as much as a hundred bucks. some christmas cheer for local disaster survivors. the red cross hosted their annual children's holiday party at the downtown marriott. santa was joined by first responders from across philadelphia. nearly 500 families affected by fire and disaster were in attendance. the wait is about over for "star wars" fans. >> "star wars: the force awakens" hits theaters in our area tomorrow. >> the dark side. >> the first public showing of "the force awakens" in our area tomorrow night at 7:00. now google has produced a spoiler blocker. it actually scans websites for

potential plot revealing details. you can log on for details and much more on the new "star wars" movie. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, make sure you grab the umbrella before you leave tomorrow. we have rain moving in, and some of that will be around for the morning commute. so a rainy day tomorrow. we'll see periods of heavy rain through the day. we could see about an inch to inch and a half with some of the heaviest amounts and most of that could be for south jersey and delaware. once that rain leave, we have colder air moving in. we're talking about in time for the weekend, too. it's actually going to feel like winter this weekend, but just in time for christmas when we kind of want it to feel like winter, it's going to get quite a bit warmer and we could see some record high temperatures, believe it or not. in the meantime, tomorrow's rain, again, it will be here in the morning by 8:00 a.m. scattered showers mid-40s. 10:00 in the morning 50 degrees and more widespread rain, by noon i think we'll see some

heavy rain around with temperatures in the mid-50s. so still a mild day. the rain is not here yet, though, it's right around the southeast slowly moving in this direction. so it will get closer overnight, but it will really start to move in right around the time that many of you are hitting the road tomorrow morning. right now we just had the clouds around, but that rain is on the way. here's future weather. we'll see the chuds overnight, but then you see 7:00 in the morning we see our first area of showers move in. south jersey and delaware the best chance for this in the morning, even up to the philadelphia area. then by 10:00, the yellows and oranges show you where the heavy rain could be. we could see the heavy periods late in the morning and even right around lunchtime. some could be confined right to new jersey. areas north and west, you could miss out on the heavier rain but by the evening commute a lot of it will be moving out. 5:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. most of us should have a dry evening commute, but light

showers could be lingering. then toed from, it will get w d win windy, but it will be dry. a little cooler, too. windy with highs in the upper 40s for friday afternoon. then we're going to drop another ten degrees going into saturday afternoon. so right now we have the mild air in place. take a look at what happens with the weather pattern. that cold air moves in place. starting off next week that mild air comes back. now we look at thursday. this is christmas eve. that cold air is way up to the north. and that mild air comes back in. that's why we're talking about possibly record high temperatures next week closer to christmas day, believe it or not. patchy fog staying about the 40s. we'll see that rain around tomorrow developing during the morning commute, but heavy at times. especially during the middle of the day. temperatures around 50 degrees. the average high is 44 degrees. we'll stay well above normal even as we go into tomorrow. friday is going to be colder and

windy, but we'll see be above normal for this year. but relatively speaking, it will feel quite a bit colder. by saturday, upper 30s, more like winter football weather by sunday. but there you see it, mid-60s by next wednesday, the day before christmas eve. and then we could continue to keep warming after that. >> people do want it a little chilly for christmas eve to get thel in the holiday spirit. >> at least something. leading up to christmas eve, it's going to be rainy, too. >> all right. >> not what you expect. all right, sheena. christmas came early for kids in philadelphia thanks to the police athletic league and the phillies. the toys handed out were donated by fans at the toy drive. they presented a $10,000 check to the center. and the flyers traded their helmets for santa heights tonight. they delivered a truckload of toys to the salvation army foster care center in winfield heights.

what's going to happen three or four months down the line. we have a big game against arizona this week, that's all i'm focused on. i do like it here. obviously, it's a lot different than anywhere i've ever been before. but i really do enjoy it here. >> like the bearded bradford said, the eagles have a significant task at hand and it's dealing with the arizona cardinals. john clark has more on the challenge they present. >> the eagles have won two in a row for the first time in two months, now they're trying to win three straight for the first time all year. but the cardinals may be the most talented team they face this season. chip kelly says arizona has the best threesome of receivers the birds have faced this year, larry fitzgerald, michael floyd and john brown. they can really stretch the field. and the cardinals offense, they lead the league in total yardage, most yards per attempt and big plays of 20 or more yards. big test for the birds' secondary. >> we had a huge challenge.
