nbc 10 news starts now. >> tonight at 11:00, tragedy strikes in south jersey. a state trooper's life cut short doing the job he loved. >> good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. trooper eli mccarson died in a single-car crash. he was responding to a domestic dispute when his cruiser went off of the road and into a pole. >> that happened on quinton-allowaw road. >> reporter: the new jersey state police called this a tragic loss, especially for the troopers who worked here at the barracks directly with eli mccarson. he was out doing his job today, responding to a call, when his car slammed into a pole. >> it looked real serious.

the fire trucks, they were scrambling. >> reporter: witnesses describe what they saw on quinton-alloway road which was closed for much of the day. >> it was pouring down raining. >> reporter: she was one of the first to get to the car, which she says was wrapped around this utility pole. >> they tried to get him out but the door was really stuck. it was really hard to get him out of the car. >> reporter: rescue crews cut mccarson out of the car, but later doctors pronounced him dead at the hospital. he was recently married and lived in gloucester county. he just became a trooper in february. this was first death on this rural road. susan cloe remembers when another driver hit the same pole years ago. >> he died instantly. it's a dangerous curve. >> reporter: she says the speed limit recently changed from 50 to 35 and she wants to see more. >> something that will slow people down. signs that go way back saying dangerous curve. it's so sad. my heart breaks for him and his

family, especially this time of year. >> reporter: the superintendent of the state police says this is especially hard coming during the holidays, but he says the troopers will not flinch, they'll continue their duties just as mccarson was doing today. in woodstown, new jersey, i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. right now we're following breaking news in center city. police on the scene of a stabbing at 13th and arch streets. you're looking at live pictures. this took place in a tunnel for the convention center, which you see right here with police cars and an ambulance on the scene. one person has been stabbed. we're still trying to figure out how seriously that person is hurt. no word if anyone is in custody. but we'll keep you posted on this stabbing in center city as soon as we get more information. new at 11:00, from montgomery county, a ursinus college student was hit by a car. the student was hit around 7:30

and she died a short time later. police have not identified the victim. the driver did stay at the scene. to our weather now. today's rain followed by foggy conditions tonight. this is video along route 202 in talleyville just outside wilmington. talleyville, i should say. >> sheena parveen. >> the rain is gone, we have the dense fog around this evening. but the good news is that dense fog will be clearing out overnight, so it should not be here for the morning commute. we will, however, still see the clouds around, the rain. that's not going to be here either tomorrow will be a dry day. a look at the visibility. most of the area that saw dense fog earlier, big improvements now. allentown down to two miles but reading is where we saw half mile visibility there. big improvements otherwise. tomorrow you'll notice more improvements. windy, temperatures will be colder. so feeling a little bit more like winter, but even more so as we go into the weekend. but in the meantime for your

friday, by 8:00 in the morning, mid-40s, breezy and chilly, by 10:00 a.m., 47 degrees and by noon not budging past 50 degrees for most of the area tomorrow. it will be windy going into the weekend. the wind could make some areas feel around 20 degrees, maybe even the upper teens. we'll take a look at that forecast coming up. new information on an urge to -- the nurse made several other mistakes. among them keeping the vaccine in her personal refrigerator and transporting it using a styrofoam container with cold packs. the agency said she only brought enough of the vaccine for 20 people but managed to make it last for 67 people. the nurse has since surrendered her license. two employees at a school are charged with assaulting a pair of teenagers with special

needs. prosecutors say the crimes happened earlier this month at the bancroft haddonfield campus. surveillance video shows natashia hines and manga java beating a 14-year-old with a belt and restraining another student under a desk. a statement released, we have a zero tolerance policy toward any action that would endanger or purposefully injure an individual served at bancroft. our primary concern is the well-being and safety of those we serve. the fbi has arrested a pennsylvania man suspected of conspiring to help isis. authorities believe he may have been plotting an attack. agents removed several items from the man's home in harrisburg tonight. among them was a backpack filled with ammunition. authorities say that discovery suggests he may have been planning an attack. his name is jalil ibn ameer aziz. authorities say he has more than 50 dwirt accoutwitter accounts d

to talk about violence against the u.s. and distribute isis propaganda. he's also accused of distributing names, addresses and information op 100 reported members of the u.s. military. and conspiracy charges tonight for a friend accused of helping the san bernardino attackers. federal prosecutors say enrique marquez conspired to help tris and bought two assault rifles so syed farook could avoid a background check. those rifles were used in the mass shootings. farook and his wife killed 14 people at a holiday party for farook's co-workers. the couple was later killed in a shoot-out with police. president obama is set to visit san bernardino tomorrow. he plans to meet with families of the victims of the shooting. the president added the stop in southern california to a previously scheduled trip to hawaii for a christmas vacation. >> now to a developing story in north philadelphia. a day care where a baby died is shut down tonight. the state issued an order today

that closes sisters child care on germantown avenue. a 10-month-old died after being found unresponsive at that day care yesterday. the department of human services is contacting parents and will be at the facility tomorrow to help families find other care for their children. police found a decomposed body in an abandoned north philadelphia home tonight. the home's on north chadwick street. investigators believe it's a woman's body and they're still trying to figure out how that person died. tonight investigators are looking for clues to find the cause of this fire that destroyed a wilmington church. we showed you this video from a viewer's drone last night. this drone was directly overhead as the roof of new jerusalem missionary baptist church collapsed. today investigators sifted through the debris. as we told you last night, this was the second fire here in the last two weeks. once the site is safe, arson dogs will be brought in to sniff for anything suspicious. parents and students in philadelphia public schools are being put on notice, if

lawmakers don't pass a budget by the end of january, the district could run out of money. the state budget is already five months overdue with no clear indication of when lawmakers will reach a final agreement. nbc 10's andrea cline-thomas talked to them. >> i want only one thing this holiday season and that's for our state lawmakers to do their job. >> reporter: philadelphia public school parents are being asked to contact state lawmakers and urge them to pass a budget. what's the worst case scenario? >> is we run out of money. >> reporter: already schools have borrowed $1 billion to cover operating costs during the five-month stalemate. after january 29th, without a state budget, borrowing more money is not guaranteed. schools could be forced to close. >> what they want to do is parents got to take on some work

or a job because now you got kids at home and you can't get the babies. >> reporter: district employees were notified about the dire financial situation so they could begin to plan. >> i feel a little bit stressed out, and i look at my finances. >> reporter: the state budget proposal would include historic raises for education after years of deep cuts. how to pay for it remains a sticking point. >> we have to have the stability of a budget so we can plan ahead for supporting our students and our personal lives. >> reporter: reporting from philadelphia, nbc 10 news. the school reform commission voted to extend dr. hite's contract for another five years as superintendent. there was another gathering before tonight's meeting, this one to push the src to approve more charter schools in the coming year. next month commissioners will consider whether three underperforming elementary schools will become charter schools. in february they'll vote on

applications for 14 new charter schools. a montgomery county woman will spend at least five years behind bars for injecting her teen aejd daughter with heroin. a judge today sentenced patricia davenport to five to ten years in prison. she's from lower southward township. she injected her daughter several times during trips to philadelphia. the girl was 15 at the time. a delaware county woman faces charges for allegedly stealing $10,000 from a 90-year-old woman. prosecutors say tina frick hired marianne smith to be a companion. smith had frick's debit card and p.i.n. number to buy things for herself and the 90-year-old woman. the attorney became suspicious when $10,000 just disappeared. the woman who hired her told her to take the money. frick said that never happened and told detectives, quote, i may be up in age, but i'm not naive. dozens of cats are being cared for tonight after being

rescued from a gloucester county home. the spca says there were at least 40 cats in the house along sixth avenue in pitman. we found workers in haz-mat suits bringing out cats in boxes. they'll be put up for adoption. how is this for a shipping nightmare? a stash of guns goes to the wrong address. how the mix-up led to the arrest of a new jersey man. plus -- women shopping alone, beware. a warning tonight from police and what you need to be on the lookout for. oh, time to dust off those light sabers, "the force awakens" is finally here. a shipping mistake sends a box of guns to the wrong address. tonight a man at the jersey shore is under arrest after those guns showed up at his door. a labeling mix-up sent 11 guns to a home in barnegat township. police say kevin neagle was arrested because he decided to keep the weapons instead of telling u.p.s. he had them. u.p.s. called the mistake an unusually labeling error that it quickly recognized. it worked with police to retrieve the package. the company says it delivers 18 million packages on a typical day and incidents like this are extremely rare. police in south jersey are on the hunt for a crew of purse thieves. the ring is on the move in gloucester township and washington township gloucester county.

police say they've been caught on camera stealing purses from female shoppers. police have already arrested three people including this man. and they're still looking for more. ♪ >> they're real. >> it has been seven long years since the last "star wars" film hit the theaters. >> but today the wait came to an end. movie theaters across our area have been packed since the early morning hours waiting for "the force awakens" to come to life. andrea cline-thomas caught up with several of those fans in center city. >> reporter: overall "star wars" is getting great reviews. some say it is just good, others are saying it is a must see. here at the franklin institute it's only one out of 20 imax theaters across the world showing the film version of "the force awakens." and they make sure that fans get a complete experience.

ticket sales here at the franklin institute, "star wars" will be shown around the clock until sunday. the next screening is at 1:00 a.m. reporting live in center city, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10. the athletic league recognized commissioner charles ramsey tonight. he's retiring january 7th. first deputy commissioner richard roth will replace him. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, the rain's cleared out and the fog that we saw earlier this evening, it is lightening up, so we'll see that clearing more overnight tonight. otherwise, tomorrow's going to be windy, it's going to be cooler and it will feel a lot more like winter as we go into the weekend. so a cold snap's coming both saturday and sunday. saturday will be the coldest day. that's going to come with wind, it's going to make it feel even colder. i'll show you that in a second.

then another warm-up coming just in time for christmas eve. we could see record high temperatures. right now, though, temperatures are slowly on their way down. by the time you wake up tomorrow morning about the mid40s, but by that time and between that and lunch hour, we're going to not see too much of a rise. temperatures tomorrow will be cooler around the upper 40s for most of the area. today was up to 57 degrees. tomorrow the high right around 49, then we drop off below normal for saturday. the average high is 44. we'll be at 41. by sunday, mid-40s. that will be football weather just in time for the eagles game. right now we're nice and dry. this is radar. no rain, that has all left. but now you see the cloud cover that's still in place. we'll see the clouds linger tomorrow. then we'll see gradual sunshine. so here's a look at future weather. overnight clouds hang around and early tomorrow morning rain offshore but the clouds slowly clear out from about north to south. then friday night, we'll be windy, and that wind's going to come in from the northwest.

we'll also see lake effect snow from the north and west, so some could blow showers to the poconos and the higher elevations. our temperatures get colder tomorrow morning feeling around 20 degrees. some spots north and west could feel like the teens early saturday. through the afternoon only feeling around 30 degrees. the actual high will be around 40 degrees. it will be a cold weekend at least for the start of the weekend. we warm up to near 70 degrees on christmas eve. christmas day, take a look at that drop down into the 50s, but this is a very warm weather pattern. that could be a record high temperature by christmas eve, believe it or not. for the eagles game, temperatures mid-40s for tailgaters. but it will be staying dry and school enough to actually feel like football weather this weekend as opposed to last weekend. tonight the rain is ending and the fog is going to be clearing overnight. clouds moving over to more

sunshine. breezy and cooler. highs around 50 degrees. still above normal. the normal is 44. over the weekend we drop below normal for saturday. below freezing sunday morning. then we're looking at a nice forecast for the eagles as we go into sunday. next week, though, we start with temperatures around 60 degrees, and there you see it, christmas eve, the last day in the seven-day forecast. that would be a record high. >> that's just incredible. >> santa and rudolph are not going to know what to do with that heat. >> they're not. and it will come with rain, too. so at least we'll see it cooling on christmas day. >> he needs to wear the lighter suit. >> that's right. >> not the heavy one. that will be problematic. >> waterproofing. >> the owls have landed. the temple university football team touched down today to get set to take on toledo in the boca raton bowl next tuesday.
