>> announcer: nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 6, a community is reeling after a deadly accident overnight. a speeding car crashed into a tractor trailer and burst into flames in northeast philadelphia. what we're learning tonight about the victim. but first, it is a battle of the birds. skyforce 10 is live over lincoln financial field where the eagles will take on the cardinals in a sunday night showdown. good evening, everyone. i'm denise nakano. the eagles are hoping for their first three-game winning streak of the season. nbc 10 is your official eagles station. we have team coverage of tonight's face-off. we begin with comcast sportsnet's john clark and john,

the eagles have high hopes for this game. >> reporter: yeah, it's a big one. and because the giants lost today, we have figured out exactly what the eagles need to do to win the division. basically, it's this. if the eagles beat the cardinals tonight and the redskins next saturday night, they win the division. even if the eagles lose tonight, if they beat the redskins next week and then beat the giants, the division is theirs. but bottom line, they have to beat the washington redskins next saturday night here at the linc. let's look at some of the birds coming in for the big matchup with the cardinals. i tell you, this is a tough one for the eagles. the cardinals twun of the best teams in the nfl, winning seven in a row. their offense is one of the most prolific in the league. but hey, the birds are playing well. they've won two straight in december and are playing their best when it matters most. this is a huge test tonight against one of the best in the nfc. >> i think everybody just been locked in. the attention to detail, our

preparation in practice has been outstanding, the energy in practice. guys are going out and getting it done on sunday. that's what matters most, you have good preparation throughout the week. but does it carry over to sunday? it has been carrying over for the past few weeks. we just expect the same thing to happen. we play with the energy and intensity we've been playing with the past couple of weeks we'll be fine. >> reporter: take a look, a couple of eagles making their way out to the field. if you notice, the black pants and the end zone is black. back in black again tonight, eagle fans love this, all-black uniforms. they seem to do pretty well in prime-time wearing all black. hopefully it will continues. this is the first time with chip kelly as coach they're an underdog. let's go over to jacqueline london with a great story about a fine young man from our area. >> reporter: tonight is a big one for the eagles in part

because of their win against the bills last week and the inspiration for that win was a young man we first introduced you to about a month ago. his name is gavin tony. he is fighting the challenges despite being born without any arms or legs. he plays football with his middle school team. chip kelly showed our story to the team last week before the bills game for inspiration. chip himself called gaven to invite him to last week's game. our cameras were there for every step as gaven met everybody. nelson aguilar gave his first ever touchdown game ball to the young man. here's why. >> the night before we watched the video, and i just watched him talk and watched the confidence he spoke with. despite the situation that he has. you know, he looked past that. he spoke with so much confidence. number one thing i remember him

showers as we head into next week. i'm also tracking record-breaking warmth as we get closetory christmas. all the details in my seven-day forecast. >> thanks, brittney. turning to a crash that claimed three lives in philadelphia's holmesburg section overnight. a car collided with a tractor trailer near ron street around 2:30 a.m. and then burst into flames. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live at the scene. randy, you have new information tonight about the victims. >> reporter: denise, it has been more than 12 hours since this horrible crash. torresdale avenue is still close down. we're seeing a small memorial for these three young victims who die in this fiery accident. police tell us it happened overnight. a chevy camaro spotted speeding north on torresdale. that car went airborne and then struck a parked tractor trailer. the crash caused a massive fire.

the fuel ignited and witnesses and good samaritans tried to rescue the victims but the flames were just far too intense. police are telling us that the three victims including at least two young women died in this fire. witnesses say they did everything they could to try to rescue them. >> a big black cloud of smoke, just blown up. pretty frightening. >> i just want the families to know of whoever these victims are this close to christmas that i tried. i tried to do everything i could to get them out of that vehicle. i tried. and i'm sorry that i couldn't. i am so sorry that i couldn't. >> reporter: now, that good samaritan tells us he tried to smash open the passenger window but the flames of course were going too fast, were far too intense. i also just spoke with two friends of the victims.

they say the young women were great people. they don't know why they were in that car at 2:45 a.m. we're live in holmesburg, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. right now, two philadelphia police officers are being treated after they crashed in philadelphia this afternoon. the officers were heading to a priority assignment when they crashed at south 53rd street at springfield avenue. they are expected to be released from presbyterian hospital soon. a wilmington baptist church held a service today after their sanctuary burned down to a pile of bricks last week. the pastor of the new jerusalem missionary baptist church led worship today at a nonprofit in wilmington. a delaware mosque had offered to loan their building after the fire at new jerusalem wednesday night. despite losing their building, the pave or pastor says it's st good day for his congregation. >> even though we lost our church and the fire devastated us, we still have jesus as lord,

and he has a way of bringing us together with faith and strength. >> federal agents are investigating whether an arsonist caused the fire and whether a hate crime was committed. lawmakers in harrisburg are looking at their options after a budget deal fell apart yesterday. legislative leaders were working at the capitol today. yesterday the republican controlled house killed a pension reform bill that the senate wanted. now senate republicans are refusing to support a billion-dollar tax increase the governor wants. a midair scare. what we're learning about the fourth bomb hoax against air france in just a matter of weeks? plus this. home for the holidays. why this surprise homecoming was extra special for a local family.

a fake explosive forced a paris-bound flight to make an emergency landing in kenya today. the device rigged with cardboard, paper and a timer is the fourth bomb hoax against air france in just the past few weeks. the device was found behind a bathroom mirror. hundreds of passengers had to use emergency slides to get to safety. up to six passengers were being questioned in the incident. brittney? and you can see the eagles are warming up. i'll have your chilly tailgating forecast and what you can expect for the game. and then what you can expect as you head back to work next week. that's all coming up in my full forecast.

we are just over two hours away from the face-off of eagles fans. they are taking on the cardinals 8:30 tonight at the linc. here is a live look. let's go to drew smith live there tonight. drew, a lot of excitement that fans are joining you out there. >> reporter: there's so much to do in the leadup to this game. you can hear the band playing. xfinity live is packed. here's something you don't see every home game. it's a sunday night football bus. people getting on board to see what's inside. this bus travels to the host city of every sunday night game, driving more than 25,000 miles this season. tonight eagles fans climbed on board which does have eagles jerseys and helmets on display. there are signed game balls from earlier this year. a lot of people are taking advantage of the photo ops, people getting pumped up for the big games. >> the best part is being able to stand behind the desk where they do the live feed. that was pretty neat.

tracking record-breaking warmth for christmas eve. 40 degrees tonight, clear visibility. the feels like temperature still in the 30s. it feels like 34 degrees so definitely going to be a cold one. across the rest of the region, 39 in philadelphia, 30 in millville, 36 for dover, 34 in wildwood. as we go into the rest of tonight, our feels-like temperature will be a bit cooler for us, feeling like 27 in allentown, 35 degrees right now in redding. your city planner show that's by 8:00 p.m. 38 degrees as you wrap up your tailgating. by 11:00 p.m. as you're heading home, temperatures at tlech. even cooler than that. we do expect a cold one. our future temperatures show we are seeing that cold air settle right over philadelphia, washington touching down into the carolinas. the next couple of days, the cold air retreats to the north, mild air comes back up. we'll have an area of high pressure staying in control,

strengthening over our area. that will push our temperatures anywhere between 20 to 25 degrees above average. our average for this time of year is 44 degrees, and we'll start seeing these near record warming conditions closer to wednesday. the forecast high will be 64, the record 66. then as we get into christmas eve, 70 degrees. by christmas day, we drop back down to the mid-50s. satellite radar shows we are seeing a few clouds increasing and we'll see another system develop out of the midwest moving closer to us, heading into tuesday. that's when you're going too notice a chance of showers moving in. that's closer to 3:00 p.m. it will affect your tuesday commute home. closer look at eagles/cardinals. kickoff 37 degrees by the fourth quarter closer to 34. tonight temperatures drop to 34 for philadelphia, a bit cooler for the suburbs. seven-day forecast shows a track of showers tuesday, wednesday, thursday. the biggest story is our warm-up

they beat the division. eagles are back in black, some out there in short sleeves. that is what we want to see. tonight it is a huge test against one of the best teams in in the nfl, the cardinals won seven in a row, scored the most points on the road, most yards in all the nfl. but the birds cannot look past them and think about the redskins game next week. they need to take care of business tonight. >> i think this is exactly where we wanted to be. i think it's kind of like the same point of last year with three games wshgs he had three games left to win the division. last year we didn't take care of business so everyone is excited about this week. >> this is all we have this week. this is our main focus. what happens after that we can't control. it doesn't really matter. only thing that matters to us right now is the cardinals. that's all our focus, only thing that -- we're not there yesterday to be worried about somebody two, three weeks down the line. it's all about right now this

week. >> reporter: we're getting you set for the game here on nbc 10. take a look. in seven minutes we've got our playoff push special. a lot of special features on that show. sit-down with malcolm jenkins. good stories. right after the game, we'll be live outside the eagles locker room with eagles game day final. as we just talked about, the nfc east is basically coming down to the eagles against the redskins next saturday night here at the linc. here is why. first, let's look at what happened to the giants. this became a game against the carolina panthers. the panthers jumped out to a huge lead. odell beckham jr. and josh norman, look at this, looks like wwe. they got personal, cheap shots back and forth. the giants would come back from down four touchdowns to tie it up. but graham ga know hits the field goal. panthers win 38-35. they're 14-0. the giants are 6-8. let's go to washington. the redskins hosting the bills.
