. right now at 11:00, rainy and warm. it certainly doesn't feel like christmas eve in our area. we are getting record temperatures today. we are getting a live look at the blue cross river rink on penn's landing fcht you go today it may feel like summertime. you can find it hard to believe that just a week from now they're getting ready to celebrate new year's eve with fireworks. you'll see those fireworks here on nbc 10. good morning, i'm lauren mayk and temperatures cross into record territory early this morning. will it cool down a bit any time soon? first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is here with the forecast. >> it won't cool down close to average, that's for sure.

our average is 42 degrees instead. we saw temperatures reach their peak at 71 this morning. we're expected to warm all the way to 76 degrees until we head to christmas eve. as we push into tomorrow we'll cool down but it will be 70 degrees, almost 30 degrees above average. this is definitely the warmest christmas eve ever recorded. we're at 61 in the poconos, 68 in allentown, 70 degrees in wilmington. 68 currently in blue bell. temperatures in wood vine at 69 degrees. with the old record being 64, we've already beaten that record, we don't to worry about that but it will continue to be warmer. 12 degrees warmer than where we were yesterday. up 14 degrees in allentown, up 11 from this time yesterday in pottstown and our temperatures

are going to continue to climb for us. the other thing we're watching as we take a closer look at our radar is some of the showers that keep moving through. so we even saw a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of dover and central delaware as we go into the rest of the late morning hours, we'll see more moisture pushing in. if i time it out, we'll show you that. it will be the shore and parts of delaware that will see the heaviest rain. closer to 1:00, 2:00, but we could see some of these showers lingering throughout the afternoon and early evening along the shoreline but through philadelphia and points north and west and even heading into the poconos we should start to see drying conditions as we get a little bit closer to your early afternoon hours. i'm tracking what else is in store, including a cooler eagles forecast for saturday's game. that's coming up. lauren? >> thanks, brittney. procrastinators listen up.

and tell you wait until the day after christmas. live for now from king of prussia mall, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> thanks monique. happening today millions of americans are traveling for christmas. if you're flying you want to pay close attention to a change in tsa security lines. tsa officers will be able to mandate a passenger go through the full body scanners. before you could opt out and ask for a patdown by hand but critics are worried about privacy and radiation. >> i don't have a problem with it. take a look at me, i'm not worried about somebody looking at me. >> well, the fear factor so they have to make us feel safe. do what they have to do. >> to be clear, you still can ask to opt out of the scanner. the tsa says pat-downs will be offered but if they have a security concern they may also require you to be x-rayed.

funding. still, republicans are urging governor wolf to sign it. we are now 176 days into the fiscal year and no budget. yesterday pennsylvania tied the record for a budget impasse set in 2003. lawmakers are not expected back at work until at least monday. a pennsylvania teenager accused of supporting ie lis is remain behind bars. a judge deemed him a flight to the public. he is 19 years old. he pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and trying to help a foreign terrorist organization. prout prosecutors say he used twitter to spread isis propaganda and had a bag loaded with ammunition hidden in his home. he faces up to 40 years if convicted. his trial is scheduled for february. can eagles deliver a christmas present, the team can win, t division title. the pressure will be on eagles

pannypack street. in all, 43 propane tanks were stolen ranging from 20 to 100 pounds. police say the suspects use what appear to be a dodge caravan and a ford escape during the heist. rough weather has torn through the south in the last few days with at least eight people killed across three states. thunderstorms spawned more than a dozen tornados in mississippi alone. many survivors may be homeless or without power. >> reporter: you can see this house is knocked off its foundation. the sheriff tells us the people who lived there are okay, they were not hurt but they had to spend the night in a shelter. the power crews have been out here since first light this morning repairing the downed lines.

the storm system spawned dozens of tornados in several states causing widespread damage, in that storm zone, some people are still missing and today the authorities are out looking for them to see if they can find them or to determine if there are more victims. that's a very grim task any time, but especially during the holidays. mark potter, nbc news, clar clarksdale, mississippi. republican presidential hopeful ted cruz is responding to a political cartoon of his family published in the "washington post." take a look. we have a picture of that cartoon right here and you can see cruz depicted as santa and his two daughters as dancing monkeys. the cartoon was eventually retracted by the "washington post." cruz says the media should stay away from children of presidential candidates. >> let me suggest a very simple rule that everyone ought to follow. leave the kids alone. leave my kids alone. leave marco's kids alone. leave hillary's kids and grand kids alone. kids should be off limits and

the "washington post" should know that. >> the "washington post" editorial page editor released a statement saying he failed to look at the cartoon before it was published. meanwhile, ben carson is moving to squash speculation that he's changing his campaign. carson has slid in the polls in recent weeks. belgian police announced a ninth person linked to the deadly attacks in paris last month has been arrested. police say the man is being held on charges of taking part in a terrorist group and terrorist activities. he was arrested on tuesday. 130 people died in those attacks in paris. security forces in iraq say they have captured some areas close to baghdad back from isis militants. a spokesperson says the advances were slowed yesterday by snipers, roadside bombs and b s

booby trapped buildings. the u.s. coalition was providing air support to troops on the bomb and bombing isis targets. earlier today an iranian plane hit a concrete barrier as it taxied to its parking position. passengers arriving to istanbul from tehran were forced to evacuate. the plane's front wheel was damaged after it failed to stop. fortunately, no one was hurt and investigators are trying to figure out why the plane hit the barrier. the illinois attorney general says gambling on sites like fan duel and draft kings is illegal. the ruling could spark a legal battle similar to the one under way in new york. both sites say they hope the illinois legislature will overturn the attorney general's decision. nbc's parent company comm cast is an investor in fan dual.

we have a live picture to show you. a wet start in cape may. wet roads there. we are seeing the most consistent showers closer to the shore and also in the central and southern parts of delaware. but we'll still track showers throughout your early afternoon hours. we've already seen record-breaking warmth. we've already been to 71. we will warm back to 76 degrees. i'm tracking a chance for weekend rain and cooler conditions in store on saturday for the eagles game. but for philadelphia right now mostly cloudy skies, 70 degrees. wind speeds out of the southwest at 17 miles per hour, clear visibility across the rest of the region. temperatures are on the warm side. this is going to be -- this is already the warmest christmas eve ever recorded. temperatures at 70 in northeast philly, 70 in mount holly. 70 in wilmington. same thing in dover. 67 in millville. your city planner shows as we go

into the next couple of hours we still say in the low 70s. high today at 76. by 7:00 p.m. we drop to 69 degrees so it will be a warm evening if you plan on staying out, you won't even need a jacket. you need a hood for rain drops. yesterday we saw a record high of 70 degrees and that wasn't until 10:53 prime minist.m. so we'll see a high 76 degrees. heading into tomorrow, 70 degrees. we'll drop a few dee degrees but we are still well above the average which is 42 degrees. satellite radar shot shows we're seeing showers confined to delaware. we'll see cloudy skies as well.

one thing we have been focusing on is down south near atlanta, stretching into alabama where we've seen flash flooding, reports of tornados and we expect another round of severe storms in those locations. we'll see more rainfall, then most of it will move offshore. some models are showing it lingering longer closer to 6:00, 7:00. if you live closer to the shore, south jersey into parts of delaware. a few more stray showers as we go into the rest of the afternoon. then we'll see colder air move in. we'll see the wind direction shifting out of the northeast and that will help drop our temperatures down to the high 50s saturday. temperatures will range between 74 and 77. >> new fallout after an e. coli outbreak is tied to one fast food chain.

kids in our area have to wait until tomorrow to see what santa left them but the jolly old elf is busy delivering gifts to boys and girls on the other side of the globe. the north american aerospace defense command, norad, are tracking santa and his sleigh. so far, santa has given out more than a billion presents. to track santa yourself, we have a link on nbc10.com and on the nbc 10 app. chipotle is changing the way it cooks your food after an e. coli outbreak made more than 50 people sick. the restaurant says onions will be dipped in boiling water to kill germs before they're chopped. it will add cilantro to freshly cooked rice so heat kills off microbes in the herb. they say they'll test every 2,000 pounds of steak before it's sent to stores. it says it has similar testing plans for chicken in the coming weeks. dozens of people from nine

okay after being hurt in a crash in southwest philadelphia. the car hit a pole at 84th street around 1:00 this morning. police are trying to figure out what led to the crash and police are trying to track down a city employee who they say crashed his car into a parked car in north full phil overnight. it happened around 1:45 at 24th street and lehigh avenue. the force of the crash pushed the parked vehicle into other cars damaging them. police say the city worker was driving his own car, not a city car. he took off but authorities know who he is and they are searching for him. people in abington are stunned after one of their neighbors, a well-known marine, was gunned down and killed on the porch of his home. it happen around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. police were called to prospect avenue, they found the gunman a few blocks away but when police tried arresting him, more gunfire erupted right in the middle of a neighborhood. >> blew his window out, shot his own window out and sat there for a while and then you hear two

gunfires and the officers said "he shot himself." >> right now that man is still in the hospital. we're waiting on more information from police including the names of both men and a motive for the shooting. we now know when the reservation will start at the gallery at market east. it's set to close new year's day. that's when people who use the indoor short cut to avoid rainy nights and cold weather will be out of luck. they will transform the gallery into the fashion outlets of philadelphia. those outlets are expected to open in 2017. police are looking to find the two men who burglarized a restaurant in philadelphia's old city neighborhood. they say the surveillance video captured them breaking into four father's bar and grill earlier this week. the men took two small spaves with about $1400 inside. if you recognize them, police want to hear from you. in philadelphia's lawndale neighborhood, more than a dozen

tires were slashed early tuesday morning. miss say this person seen here was walking the dog while slashing tires along the way. in all, a total of 16 vehicles had their tires slashed. police are still trying to find the person who's responsible. now to an update on jahi mcmath who is still in new jersey. her mother has been on a quest to have her brain-dead daughter declared legally alive. now the fight is moving to federal court. >> i won't give up on jahi because i'm her mother. >> reporter: on video conference from new jersey, jahi mcmath's mother says she still doesn't believe her now 15-year-old girl is brain dead. mcmath has lived in new jersey on a ventilator for nearly two years after doctors at children's hospital oakland declared her brain dead following complications from surgery in 2013. family attorney chris dolan is firing a federal lawsuit demanding the teen's death certificate be revoked.

organs. >> reporter: that was jean ellie reporting. they are calling it a christmas miracle. a monmouth county girl is in remission from cancer after she met with the pope. >> it was a moment of victory and it was like i beat it, i beat it, it's gone. >> 12-year-old grace west was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects the nerves. earlier this month, she found out she is cancer free. last year she met with pope francis at the vatican and he blessed her. that's when she said she knew she had beaten the disease. >> i think the pope made the miracle happen and everybody that prayed for me in the community really made it happen. >> grace was treated at children's hospital of philadelphia. she never lost her sense of humor. she named her iv pole "bob" and her dog toby after her e-mail drug. >> reporter: desean jackson talked about returning to philadelphia this weekend.

we know it's bad but explain what does it mean short term and long term? >> concussion, the most basic, is a dramatic brain injury. so the brain is either impacted directly or indirectly through a fall or another hit in the body and the brain is twisted or shaken. that causes damage. we can't see that with some standard tests when it initially happens but we do know it changes the way the brain functions. >> so what can you do in physical therapy to actually combat that? >> often times with a concussion there can be disruptions in visual processing so the brain can't handle the information coming in or sound and sensitivity, also changes in balance, how someone walks, being able to concentrate, memory. so we come up with exercises that are specific to those losses. >> and are the exercises different for different ages for children, for example? >> oh, absolutely. it has to be individualized. i could have five children all the same age but each of them

barefoot golfing having a great time. that looked like a great shot, too. so he has his eagles gear on but i think that's the way to spend christmas eve. i'm from california so that looks like a scene out of california but it's not. it's here in philadelphia where temperatures will be in the 70s today. mid-70s, in fact, so we've broken the record. tracking record-breaking warmth throughout the entire day. today we'll make a run for the record as we head into tomorrow and once again on sunday. i'm also tracking weekend rain and cooler temperatures saturday for the eagles forecast. philadelphia at 71, wind speeds out of the southwest at 16 miles per hour so we'll continue to see stronger wind speeds. that wind direction is important because that's warmer air coming up from the southwest. moisture being pulled in as well from another system, i'll show you that. but temperature wise 68 degrees. same thing in pottstown, 70 in dover, 68 in atlantic city.

69 in trenton and temperatures today again are going to push if into the mid-70s so it will be a warm afternoon. we'll track a slight chance of thunderstorms and isolated showers by 1:00 p.m. then we'll see everything clearing up. mostly cloudy skies by 4:00 p.m. and temperatures in the 70s as the sun goes down. so here's a look at some records. yesterday we hit a record high of 70. that wasn't until 10:53 last night so temperatures are getting warmer as we were sleeping then today we started off already warmer than 64. we beat the record. we expect a high today of 76. we stay warm heading into tomorrow. our average for this time of the year is 42 so we are going to be 30 degrees above average. this is an incredible christmas eve forecast for you. a closer look at the radar shot, we have a few light showers that have pushed into delaware and lingering near cape may, parts of south jersey. a few showers moving through the

philadelphia area and you can see where the activity is coming from, straight up from the southwest and we're seeing severe thunderstorms. we have another severe thunderstorm warning outside of montgomery. for us, we should see more severe thunderstorm warnings, we saw one this morning. we'll continue to track isolated heavy downpours but mainly showers expect ed through the rest of the afternoon turning to light sprinkles and rainfall. we'll see another chance for light showers as we head into christmas and colder conditions expected for us as we head into saturday. so temperatures will drop down into the 50s which is well above average but not as warm adds this record-breaking warmth that we will experience today and possibly into tomorrow. seven-day forecast shows a warm christmas day for you. 70 degrees heading into tomorrow. 58 saturday and sunday we do record warmth again. >> thanks, brittney. this morning we're get you into the holiday spirit by bringing you a performance from the
