but there's more rain developing down around virginia that will be coming up during the day tomorrow. perhaps a couple of showers overnight tonight. but it's still going to be unseasonably warm. not quite as warm as last night, but still pretty amazing. 62 degrees with a chance of a shower at 11:00. and by 8:00 a.m., a mere 58 degrees. we'll talk about the other records coming this weekend, and big changes for next week with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> no, no changes. get the latest forecast as you plan your holiday. our team of meteorologist also be swetweaking the forecast aro the clock. i know people want it colder, but our live coverage continues where this christmas is feeling much different. >> randy, it looks like you've got a good spot right there.

last-minute gifts. any doubt? look at that parking lot. people are waiting until the last minute to grab all their presents. so hard to snag a place to park. there are just a few hours let to get through those to-do lists. >> right now, we're live at the new gloucester mall. how is it out there? >> reporter: it felt more like christmas in july today. we still have a steady stream of shoppers headed into the outlets here. those ultimate procrastinators say they're shopping until the last reason for two reasons. for stocking stuffers and for the most important or most expensive person on their list. with just a matter of hours before retailers close up shop and santa is well on his way --

8:00. of course, there's always 24-hour convenience stores for those extreme last-minute purchases. >> long lines this morning at one south philadelphia bakery for a sweet holiday tradition. that's right, hundreds of people come here every year to take their share of the thousands of cannolis they have there. we talked with the owner today about how he feels about being a part of the holiday tradition of so many families. >> i love every minute of it. i've been here 58 years, and i love every minute of it. >> reporter: what is it about this time of year? >> the atmosphere of people so happy. they're so happy to be here. >> so happy to leave with those cannolis, too. he says he hopes to celebrate the business's 100th anniversary, some day.

[ speaking foreign language ] >> happening now, pope francis is celebrating christmas eve mass at the vatican. this is a live picture from st. peter's basilica, where the pass got under way a little over 30 minutes ago. this is his second christmas as the leader of the catholic church. ♪ >> christmas eve celebrations are also under way in our area. mass just wrapped up here at st. john community services. the church was expecting about 250 people for today's vigil. attendance has grown so much, the mass was moved from the chapel to the gymnasium. ♪ listen up, kids in our area. you have to wait until tomorrow to see what santa left them.

but the jolly old elf is busy delivering gifts to boys and girls on the other side of the globe. norad is tracking santa right now and he's headed for a country along the coast of africa. so far santa has given out nor than 3 billion presents. count on nbc 10 to track santa as he works his way around the country throughout the evening. we are following a developing story in charlotte, north carolina. a mall is being evacuated after a deadly officer involved shooting in the middle of the christmas eve shopping rush. police see an off-duty officer shot and killed an armed person inside north lake mall just after 2:00 this afternoon. police say two groups of people had been fighting and one person was shot in the leg. in all that chaos, one woman went into labor. the fbi is now on that scene. the u.s. state department is warning americans to be extremely cautious when

traveling during the holidays. a worldwide travel alert is still in effect for u.s. travelers on this christmas eve. the alert was first issued before thanksgiving. the american, british, french embassies are warning about possible threats to visitors around beijing. today, beijing police tightened security around a bar and shopping area that are popular with tourists. police also announced today that they have issued a yellow security alert, which is common during the holidays. the warmer weather and rain we've been dealing with, nothing compared to the storms in the south that have killed at least 11 people now. this tornado crossed right over interstate 55 in mississippi. the storm flipped a tractor trailer onto its side. a child was thrown from a vehicle in the up to of holly springs. it's estimated 14 tornadoes touched down in mississippi last night. and take a look at this home in clarksdale, mississippi, that caved in after the storm hit.

in the daylight, investigators from the national weather service surveyed the damage. a family in jumper town barely escaped their house before it was destroyed. heavy winds and debris destroyed the volunteer fire department. the national weather service says four tornadoes touched down in middle, tennessee. at least three people were killed there. the storms picked houses up off the foundation and ripped them into rubble. and look at this, the midwest is cleaning up the damage too. an ef-1 tornado touched down in canton township, michigan yesterday. several buildings and planes were damaged at the small airport. the tornado brought small winds up to 112 miles per hour. luckily here, no one was hurt. and farther out west, people are trying to dig their way out of heavy snow. not getting it here but out there. drivers in washington state found themselves stuck on major highways for several hours, only to find some of those roads

closed. snow and icy conditions were treacherous for commuters. a tractor trailer carrying jars of peanut butter won't make it to wherever it was headed on this christmas eve. the truck overturned in bucks county today. it happened on the route 1 ramp onto 213 around 1:00. no injuries were reported. that ramp is still closed right now. count on nbc 10 to monitor the situation. philadelphia police are looking for the suspect who went on a tire slashing spree while walking a dog. this surveillance video shows the suspect early tuesday morning. police say the person slashed the tires on 16 parked cars on hellerman, shellborn and oakley streets. anyone with information should call police. the governor of pennsylvania is facing a decision what to do

with the spending bill on his desk. hereceived it this morning on his desk. republicans want him to sign the bill and stop the borrowing and service delays. a decision isn't likely before monday. center city hotels are booking a record number of rooms and bringing big business to philadelphia's economy. travelers reserved millions of hotel rooms in 2015. in fact, leisure travelers saw the biggest increase in hotel reservations in the last 18 years. since visit philadelphia started marketing the city as a leisure destination. the number of convention and group travelers decreased, but made up the majority of travelers staying in center city. business travelers saw a drop, but still made up 31% of hotel

guests. protesters in chicago brought the heart of the city's shopping district to a stand still today. they're calling on mayor rahm emanuel to resign. this is a live look at the protesters moving down michigan avenue. the same group demonstrated on black friday. you see them right in the middle of the street there. traffic is stopped as the photographer continues to follow that, as well as on the left side of your screen, you see chicago police. if you can make it out, you can hear them chanting "rahm must go." they also staged die-ins on the street. the recent release of police dash cam video showing the shooting death of a black teenager has sparked outrage. a federal judge is refusing to drop charges against a

suspected libyan militant accused in the 2012 benghazi attack. his attorneys asked for all but one charge to be thrown out. they argue that the u.s. justice department was overreaching. but a judge in washington shot down that argument. he was arrested in a u.s. special forces raid in libya last year. he is accused in the september 11, 2012 attack on the state department attack in benghazi, libya. four americans were killed, including u.s. ambassador chris stephens. a british man who is muslim say he and his family were barred from boarding a plane to los angeles because of his religion. the bags were checked when they were told that their visas, which were approved six weeks ago, had been revoked. mahmoud says his family spent $16,000 on the trip and his kids are devastated.

>> that's something for them, that they were planning for months. they have a countdown on their phone for the last month. >> customs and border protection would not comment on the case but say -- chrysler is recalling hundreds of thousands of suvs. a little more than 350,000 jeep grand cherokees and dodge durangoes are being recalled. the second recall is for the jeep compass and patriot suvs. actor robert downey, jr., has received a pardon for a drug conviction that sent him to jail for nearly a year. california governor jerry brown issued the pardon for the nearly 20-year-old felony conviction.

weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. >> fake a look at this little guy, maybe testing out an early christmas gift in gloucester city. these record warm temperatures perfect for biking, even in shorts. and t-shirts on christmas eve. and you'll be able to do it christmas day too, and maybe sunday, as well. smashed records, every place in the area broke a record today. and we have some rain coming in on christmas day. not all day, and some big changes next week. cold air is going to visit. nothing too extreme, but compared to this, you'll notice it. it's cloudy, it's been cloudy, but not a lot of rain from the philadelphia area northward. 69 degrees, wind southwest at 10 miles per hour and it's 68 in

allentown, potstown. 67 in redding. 59 in mt. pocono. 70 in trenton and mt. holly. 69 in dover and millville. 68 atlantic city. and we're not done with this. we've been above 67 degrees every hour since midnight. so we set a record before midnight for wednesday. we've set the record for thursday. tomorrow we're going to be close to the record at 68. we have a chance of beating that. and we're likely to beat the record on sunday, because that record is only 64. saturday it's the only day we don't have a shot at it. so it will be a little cooler. but all of these cities, every part of the area set records for today for christmas eve and we beat our record in philadelphia by 7 degrees. so far the official numbers respect in yet. you can see that rain down to the south, even some lightning in sussex county and more rain

developing back to the west. you can see this back edge of the clouds is not making much progress. so not expecting a lot of sunshine over the next few days. we expect very warm weather to continue overnight tonight. there we are at 10:00, still 65 degrees. and tomorrow morning, still 60. it is cooler in allentown as you can see. so at least part of the area is starting to get a little cooler. you don't see a whole lot of rain around, certainly not in the morning hours. a better chance of rain comes during the afternoon and into the nighttime hours. computer model is kind of disagreeing on how much rain would fall. this model is just showing a few showers around, mainly to the south. but it's also showing some exceptional warmth out there. now, for the eagles' game saturday night, quite mild for this time of the year. but we also have a chance of

some rain. doesn't look like a steady rain. and temperatures going up during the game. that doesn't happen too often at night. unseasonably warm tonight, with a few showers around and some fog. 58 degrees for the low in philadelphia. and tomorrow, near record warmth. and some rain coming in, in the afternoon and at night, as the wind becomes very light. there's the 55 on saturday and the record likely on sunday at 71. but look how much colder it gets monday. a high of only 45. and we may get some wind. by tuesday, heavy rain in the 40s. we could see some sleet north and west and even some snow up toward the new york border. welcome to january. >> welcome back to philadelphia. glenn, thank you so much. many people are shopping, some people have already turned into that return mode.

new york city police are looking for two women accused of stealing more than $600,000 in jewelry from a knicks' players' house. this is the surveillance video that shows the suspects who met forward derek williams at a club last weekend. "the new york post" reports that williams was celebrating the knicks' win over the sixers.

>> the christmas village filled with people buying european treats today. visitors were wearing light jackets because of the sprinkles falling earlier. but no need for the heavier winter coats on this record-setting warm christmas eve. and it's too warm, of course, for skiing at camel back mountain resorts today. too much grass out there. there's a live look at the slopes at mt. pocono, which is closed because temperatures are way too high. we could be seeing a wet christmas instead of a white christmas. >> some people love this, others can't stand it and say bring on the cold and the snow, glenn. >> right. the people who want the cold and the snow, i just tell them to be patient. >> yes. >> it's coming. and we're going to see some changes in the weather patterns as early as next week. well, we have record warm temperatures today. the traffic is down. we haven't seen the rain that we

did yesterday. just a few showers, other than an extreme south jersey or some heavy rain. we hit an official record yesterday, just before midnight of 70. today we hit 71. that's a record. tomorrow, we could hit another record with 70 degrees. and every town in our area set a record. in many cases, shattered a record, even mt. pocono got up to 64 degrees today. and it's 59 there now. long way from being cold enough to make show. 71 in northeast philly. 70 in trenton and mt. holly. now the temperature will start falling. you can see the area of rain that was down in delaware, that has moved out. but there's more rain back to the south and west. not a whole lot. we'll have in and out kind of rain for several days overall. as you can see, more heavier

i can -- i like it a lot. it's good to run in, that's for sure. >> reporter: brian and his girlfriend danielle drove down from west chechester to take advantage of the warm weather. >> it's december and i'm wearing t-shirt. it's beautiful. >> reporter: even with drizzle and a fogged-in board walk, johnsons has a line of customers. the manager says the weather has continued to lure people to the coast. >> this year has been one of our busiest years ever. not only a lot of orders on the internet, but a ton of customers coming up. >> reporter: the owner of john and patty's says mother nature already delivered an early christmas present by providing weeks of warmth. >> it helps a lot. we're probably up about 30%. >> reporter: the restaurant has been unusually busy for november and december. >> i think we're getting a lot

the news app. catch the early show at 6:00 without having to stay up too late and if you plan to stay up, to welcome in the new year, nbc 10 will televise the second fireworks display at midnight. storms extending to the gulf coast, flight aware shows 550 flights were canceled so far today. here at philadelphia international, less than five flights were canceled. we're talking the weather's impact on travel. >> reporter: here's a closer look at your travel forecast as we head into the rest of christmas eve. we already saw strong, severe thunderstorms with tornadoes reported down south. another round of severe storms stretching from atlanta to nashville, portions of arkansas. that's going to be the concern as we head into the rest of tonight. as we push into christmas day tomorrow, we are going to see well above average temperatures

one new jersey girl's family is calling it a christmas miracle. >> grace west says she knew she could beat cancer, but it wasn't until she met pope francis that things changed in her favor. brian thompson has her story. >> i beat it, it's gone. >> reporter: grace west describing the moment she found out she's cancer free. it is a year since she met pope francis at the vatican, a gift from the make a wish foundation.

>> i think the pope made the miracle happen and everybody that prayed for me in the community really made it happen. >> reporter: that moment with the pope captured on video was just one highlight in this young girl's life. she named her dog toby, a short version of her first chemo therapy drug used to treat the rare and deadly cancer that attacked her brain two years ago. her mother thought she would not make it. >> you can't let yourself go there. you just can't. >> reporter: instead, there was just encouragement, whether from the pope or this welcome home sign with her nickname "cookie" that never came down. >> you think it's a miracle that involved so many people. >> reporter: friends and strangers built this backyard treehouse, part of a community effort that helped her get through and she developed a motto to make a mother proud. >> you have no choice but to be strong, but you can choose to be happy and positive.

>> yeah, but only vai. he's just showing off. but with this kind of weather, yeah, you can show off because it's so warm out there and we've got more to come. we shattered some records for christmas eve. we may have some more records christmas day. we have some rain coming in, and some big changes next week. it's not going to be 70 degrees or anywhere near it. we have some clearing skies in the west. just didn't get quite enough sunshine to push us above the 71 degrees. still beat the record by 7. 69 degrees right now with a southwest wind at 10 miles per hour. so even with clouds all day, we smash a record. that rarely happens, too. 71 today. we had a record yesterday. we're going to be close to a record tomorrow. we're probably going to get a

record on sunday. the only day we're not is saturday. we're going to have a front come through. you see these temperatures still incredible. 67 in redding and coatesville. 66 in quakertown. one of the cool spots, 64 here. pretty cool compared to everywhere else. 70 in mt. holly and trenton. and now we're getting a bit of a land breeze, so 60s at the beaches. beach haven at 64 degrees. we had a good bit of rain coming across southern parts of the area, even some thunderstorms. not a whole lot farther to the north and there isn't a whole lot back to the south and west yet, we're going to need something to build up before we see another round of rain. but we could see that down to the south. some of our computer models show that coming through during the evening hours and more showers coming across the philadelphia area. so there's still a good chance

of at least some rain during the night tonight. and then here comes tomorrow. there's the afternoon. the next area comes in from the west. and not all the computer models are showing it this wet, but there is the potential, kind of a front that's stalled and we get waves of rain coming in, so another threat on saturday and a bigger storm coming on tuesday. and that one is going to be a whole lot colder. unseasonably warm tonight. just a few showers you saw. 58 degrees for the low. which of course is not very low. near record warmth again tomorrow. some rain in the afternoon and into the nighttime hours. near 70 degrees. could be a record. but we're cooler on saturday. the eagles have a chance of rain, near 50 degrees for the game. and then it warms right back up on sunday. likely a record. and then crashes on monday and into tuesday.

for most of us, the final christmas eve hours are spent on gift wrapping, cooking maybe. >> working. and yet for more than a dozen hairstylists, today is just another day at the salon. but as george spencer reports, they're not making any money. and the women in their salon chairs are not their usual clients.

>> reporter: with holiday laughter in the air, it's sounding like a christmas eve photo shoot. but the women being pampered and styled here may need it more than anyone. they're all spending this christmas holiday in a shelter trying to get back on their feet, like michelle shepherd who counts a haircut as a christmas miracle. >> it's a blessing. you just couldn't imagine, i couldn't afford to get my hair done. so it's a blessing. >> reporter: and she's just one of many. for five years now, the salon has closed its doors to the public on christmas eve and opened them to society's neediest. >> we decided why not just close and do something for the community and it's worked out real well. >> reporter: talk about a busy christmas eve. what started out as 15 women getting their holiday makeover has grown to more than 50.
