chuck will be back next week. if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." . new from overnight, one montgomery county car owner became a victim twice. hear who allegedly assaulted him and why. miles of devastation. dozens of tornados blasted dallas over the weekend. it's the latest in a series of warm winter power storms. there is no risk of severe weather here but parts of our area could see a wintry mix tonight. a little brisk outside. today will only make it into the 40s. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors, let's get to the forecast now with first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. >> you saw the flag blowing,

it's windy and colder. allentown at 38 degrees, 43 in philadelphia, 40 for south jersey and delaware. the coldest spots north and west today and tonight. so here's the weather system we're tracking across the middle of the country. we have snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain so we're going to see all of these as we go late into tonight and early tomorrow morning. but not this morning. this morning we're going to keep clouds around. breezy conditions through the day, it will stay dry and the areas with type of an advisory, that's not going to be until late tonight into early tomorrow. so for today. 7:00 a.m. in the upper 30s, but a colder day by 11:00 a.m. we're only going to be in the low 40s and we'll be tracking that wintry mix moving in for part of the area. so i'll show you which areas can expect that advisory with wintry weather coming up. let's check the roads with jessica boyington. >> we're watching the construction right now on the vine street expressway, around 24th street.

you can see the police activity blocking the on and off ramps. east and westbound we're closed between the schuylkill and broad street right now. should be opening about 5:00 this morning. for the rest of our majors we're okay on the schuylkill, 95, no problems on the blue route southbound for the schuylkill to 95, 15 minutes, good to go for mass transit. no problems or delays. an attack with a tire iron send as man to the hospital in montgomery county. police tell us it happened at mather way and wagner way. katy zachry is live at police headquarters. what can you tell us? >> i have new information in the last half hour. the two suspects are being held here at the police department behind me. at this hour they have not been charged. that will likely come later this morning. they are accused of attacking the owner of a car with a tire iron as you said and a brick. as the owner tried to fend them off from stealing one of his car

stir tires. the couple had a flat tire on their chevy cruise show found another in this apartment complex and as they were trying to remove one of the tires, the owner came out and tried to stop them. that's when the attack happened. fortunately, though, the owner really amazingly was able to remember some key information despite being pretty brutally attacked. that information aided police in making an arrest soon after. i'll have the details on that coming up at 4:30. katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." philadelphia police believe there's a connection between two shootings over the weekend that happened just blocks from each other and minutes apart. both happened in overbrook saturday night. a 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was struck in the neck, back and leg. someone shot him along lead street near 67th street. a short time later someone shot a man on 67th street.

so far no arrests. also, philadelphia police have not arrested anyone in the fourth shooting on saturday night. that included the deaths of a teenager. >> let's head to south jersey. investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that destroyed a vacant home in mount laurel yesterday morning. you saw that picture sent to us by one of our viewers, and here in the studio you can see the heavy smoke as crews got a handle on the smoke. >> searching for justice. this morning a philadelphia mother is asking for help to find the kids who attacked her 14-year-old son. nbc 10 spoke with jennifer and her son. simon tells us a group of about a dozen teens confronted her son and his cousin on saturday night. she says the teens asked the cousins if they knew another teen, when they told them no, two of the boys in the group allegedly jumped the victim. simon has filed a police report on behalf of her son.

she's also sharing what's been posted on the mayfair facebook page in an effort to track down the teens who assaulted her son. >> one of them punched me in the neck, and i kept on walking because i didn't want to start anything with them. >> i will press charges. i definitely will. to maybe save another child from it happening to them. >> simon's son is recovering from bruised ribs. police continue to investigate. from our south jersey bureau, police say more charges could be filed over a disturbance involving hundreds of people at the deptford mall. look at this video from saturday night. showing a crowd near the sears store. some fights broke out in the parking lot. police dispersed the crowd. they did arrest one teenager later released to a guardian. >> to sign or not to sign, that's the decision pennsylvania governor tom wolf could make today on a budget bill that would end a 6-month stalemate. the $30.3 billion package carry

as 4.5% spending increase. republican leader wrote the bill. it contains less help for schools and social services than what wolf wanted. >> here are the options. sign the measure, let it become law without his signature, eliminate parts or veto it altogether. >> talk about a holy heist. right now there is an investigation under way in north jersey after someone swiped baby jesus from a nativity scene. the statue disappeared from st. clair church in clifton passaic county between 7:00 saturday night and 7:00 sunday morning. the statue is estimated at a few hundred dollars. police are reviewing surveillance footage from businesses in the hopes of finding whoever took it. >> people put so much money into building it. this is our first nativity ever in this parish. whether it's a prank or not it's a foolish prank. i'm very saddened by it that someone thinks that this is

funny. >> this by the way, is not the first nativity theft in that area. according to the archdiocese at least four other statue thefts have been reported. today a popular recreation center in south philadelphia will be getting a makeover. mayor nutter and other city leaders will join for a ground breaking ceremony at the smith recreation center. the center will undergo a $3 million renovation. the revamped facility will feature new basketball courts and a fitness trail. here is a live look outside. we have some breezy but cool conditions this morning. that's what you're going to wake up and walk outside to as we go through the day. if you are about to head out make sure you grab the jacket. it's going to be colder than it was, temperatures in the 40s so relatively speaking you might think it feels a lot colder but

as we go through tonight the coldest areas north and west and that is we're going to track winter precip moving in. we haven't seen this yet. we do expect is some snow possibly maybe around an inch. sleet and freezing rain, this is mostly for the lehigh valley and the poconos. and for the rest of the area we expect just a rainy tuesday. so i'll show you that in a second. right now we're dry, temperatures upper 30s in the lehigh valley, 43 philadelphia, 41 glassboro, 44 degrees right now in millville, 45 in dover. as we go through the afternoon there you see the flag 0 blowing, breezy but look at the temperatures. 7:00 in the morning low 40s we stay in the low 40s into the early afternoon. so again, we're not going to get as warm as we go through the day today. it's going to stay in the 40s. here is that weather system around chicago, rain, freezing rain, snow and sleet so we have a lot coming in right now, though, we are just cloudy. so north and west, these areas, this is under winter weather

advisory. 7:00 tonight to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, that's sleet and freezing rain and snow could be around an inch. take a look today we stay dry, tonight though that's when we expect that all to move. maybe around 10:00 p.m. you see areas north and west in the pink freezing rain or possibly sleet. rain elsewhere and that will be continuing into early tomorrow morning. so those areas be very careful as you're driving. today, mostly cloudy, colder, going to be breezy, temperatures staying in the mid-40s. at least it will be dry today. tonight as we get the wintry mix moving in, most of today dry early tuesday that's when we also have that moving in with the rain around 2 and then we start to dry out. >> if you are back home from christmas weekend you probably made it through a busy travel day. nbc 10 stopped by a philadelphia international airport where we spoke with passengers, they had to deal with travel delays caused by storms and fog and

rain in our area. >> dodged a big snowstorm on the way back, so we got here, we got two-hour delay on the way back. >> i'm traveling by myself so looking around like is any one freaking out. >> driving to the airport in memphis all of the pine trees were cut in half. >> traveling by train wasn't easy either. a power failure for some septa riders to board buses and full trains on amtrak meant tough luck for those who did not plan ahead. >> 10 after 4:00 on this monday. let's get a check of the traffic with jessica boyington. she starts us out on the schuylkill expressway. >> the schuylkill expressway is great right now. you can see it behind me where our cameras are looking. from south street, so we're okay whether you're headed wes or eastbound, no road work at this point to tie anybody up and all lanes are open. the blue route pretty much the same. the drive times there, we're at 19 minutes northbound but southbound typically where we see most of the delays in the morning time and you can see not yet.

imagine this on your christmas weekend. look at this devastation in dallas. tornado wrecked hundreds of homes. twisters killed more than two dozen people and the threat is not over. nbc 10 national correspondent brian mooar reports. it >> across dallas residents are struggling to pick up the pieces. survivors but still victims of a monster storm and the massive tornados it unleashed. >> built the house, 28 years. i don't know what i'm supposed to say. >> reporter: at least 20 twistered tore across north texas killing eight in the community of garland and the lone star state is still on edge with more waves of severe weather on the way. some areas hunkered down for

rain and flooding the panhandle areas of texas and oklahoma were paralyzed by treacherously icy roads and the threat of white-out blizzards. in missouri where at least eight lives were lost to widespread flooding, rapidly rising water overwhelmed residents. >> it came up very quickly. >> reporter: and kept rescue crews working overtime. >> i told them i know how to swim. i know it was real when the rescue team came. they put us on the life jacket and escorted us. >> reporter: for many a holiday weekend of hardship with more foul weather on the horizon. brian mooar, "nbc 10 news." >> in chicago this morning police are yet again under scrutiny, this time after an officer shot and killed two people early saturday morning. yesterday the community held a vigil to remember betty jones, the 55-year-old mother of five,

caught in the crossfire. jones was killed along with her upstairs neighbor, 19-year-old college student quinntonian la greer. when police arrived they say he was combative. his mother says he was mentally ill. >> why couldn't he be in the hospital or something had to happen rather than in the morgue. >> what about the tasers. tase him down. don't shoot people, innocent people. >> in a statement chicago police say that jones, the woman killed, was accidentally struck, it was by mistake. the department is offering its deepest condolences. the department of justice is investigating the city's police force and there have been calls for mayor rahm emanuel to step down. these deaths come after the release of dash cam video showing the teen being shot by a white police officer, that officer is due back in court

tomorrow. the police involved in this latest shooting are now on a 30-day administrative duty as part of a new policy. phillies slugger ryan howard is denying doping allegations in a cable broadcast report. howard's name was mentioned in a documentary that focused on peyton manning. the report says a pharmacist who once worked at an anti-aging clinic provided hgh. the report says the pharmacist did so while being secretly videotaped by the network. the phillies released a statement saying in part that ryan has been in extremely well respected member of our team and an outstanding contributor to our community. we will fully cooperate with any investigation by major league baseball. ryan howard's lawyer has released this statement which reads in part, the extraordinary reckless claims made against our clients in this report are completely false and rely on a source that has already recanted his claims. we will go to court to hold

al jazeera and other responsible parties accountable for smearing our clients good names. peyton manning issued a denial. take a listen. >> disgusted is how i feel. sickened by it that -- i'm not sure i understand how someone can make something up about somebody. admit that he made it up, yet it somehow gets published in a story. it's completely fabricated. complete trash, garbage. it's moragetives i'd like to use. it makes me sick. >> the pharmacist at the center of the report has told the associated press that there is not any truth to any statement of his that al jazeera planned to air. later this morning "star wars: the force awakens" is soaring into the record books. it hit a milestone earning $1 billion in global sales.

faster than any film in history. it took 12 days to hit the mark, one day earlier than the previous record holder and scored a record for christmas day box office sales on friday. analysts say this is all without even opening yet in china. the second largest movie market in the world. well, it's going to be colder today if you are about to head out grab the jacket. aside from that we have winter weather on the way. so this is mostly for areas north and west, lehigh valley and poconos. late tonight, early tomorrow while many of you are sleeping we expect snow to move in and then sleet, freezing rain and for the rest of the area just rain. so we do have a winter weather advisory true the lehigh valley and the poconos, rainy for the rest of the area, though, through the day tuesday so remember that before you head out. right now upper 30s in allentown, reading, pottstown, westchester, 43 in philadelphia, low 40s for much of south

jersey. low to mid 30s for delaware. we are dry at the moment. the precip, the wintry precip, that's off to the west. you see the snow and that pink that is showing us the wintry mix, freezing rain and sleet and then you see the rain to the south of that. locally we're cloudy, we're going to stay cloudy and dry today. that area is not going to move until late tonight. the winter weather advisory tonight through early tomorrow morning, poconos, lehigh valley, 7:00 tonight to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, sleet, freezing rain, snow could be around an inch but for the rest of the area we expect the rain for majority of the day. so here's a look at future weather today. we stay dry, this afternoon we stay dry. but then we go past 7:00 p.m. you start to see that developing north and west. dangerous driving possibly if you are heading out at that time. rain elsewhere and then the wintry precip up in the poconos early tomorrow, everybody else rain with temperatures going up again. as we go through the rest of your tuesday night, that's when we continue to see conditions clearing out. for today it's going to stay

mostly cloudy, colder, breezy, temperatures in the mid-40s. so today is going to stay dry. that wintry mix, that's not going to move in until tuesday, wednesday we could have showers around, we dry out as we go into thursday. now let's get a check on the roadways with jessica boyington. no rain, no fog today. that's the good news for drivers. hopefully there aren't too many problems. you're looking at south jersey. >> we're doing okay so far. no major problems out of the ordinary. on the 42 freeway around 41, you can see behind me a little amount of cars on the road. five minutes about four, five mile stretch from 55 to the walt whitman bridge. still good to go there. no problems through the active work zones. we have some construction projects that are long term. we have 130 closed between porcupine road and center square road, that will be nm march of 2016.

a few more months of that. plan accordingly. construction on 95, southbound you can see that drive time hasn't been affected from woodhaven to the vine street expressway. we're at 14 minutes. we do have ramp closures 95 northbound and southbound at aramingo avenue. >> rain yesterday created a mess in philadelphia. our camera captured this crash on the vine street expressway around 11:00 last night. a car hit two barrier walls on a ramp. you see it skidded out of place. state police say distracted driving or the wet roads likely caused the crash. no serious injuries reported here. the accident happened about an hour after another crash at the same exact spot. in that earlier crash, medics took two people to the hospital. >> do you love everything you got for christmas? probably not. that's okay because you are not alone. ahead in the next half hour, from returns to post-holiday discounts, why now is the time
