>> reporter: penn dot is getting ready for whatever is going to fall overnight, tonight ski resorts say they don't care what falls, they just need the extended cold. >> fired up the guns this morning once it got cold again. >> reporter: by now they should have the 40s, they've had one. >> we had a stretch over thanksgiving where we could make a bit of snow, had a stretch about ten days ago, but we haven't had the sustained cold yet. finally it looks like that may be coming at the end this week. >> reporter: so they are running the snow guns, the resort is optimistic a viable ski season is still out there. camelback is also opened up the zip line and other mountain adventure activities to keep their guests at the water park from leaving. >> the bookings have stayed really strong through this holiday week. there's a lot of pent-up demand for skiing and snowboarding and snow tubing, obviously. >> reporter: no snow has taken

its toll like kristen cox. >> i usually count on the money for school, making payments and stuff. >> reporter: maybe this week? >> hopefully this week. i'm hoping. the tuition is coming up. >> reporter: but winter eventually gets here. >> we'd rather have the snow. >> we've been praying for snow. >> some years are great, some years aren't so great, everything averages out in the end. maybe this year we'll have a good finish to the season instead of a good start. >> reporter: camelback is hoping that if this cold weather prevails, that perhaps, just maybe, they might be able to open by the weekend or early next week. live inside south whitehall township, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. >> doug, thank you. speaking of the conditions, we have developing news. severe weather continuing to pound texas. first it was tornados, now the state is getting hit by a winter storm. meanwhile, oklahoma and missouri are also under a winter storm watch and they are dealing with flooding. that after several tornados sliced through texas this

weekend, killing at least 11 people, including a baby. dozens of people were hurt when a twister with winds up to 165 miles per hour swept through the city of roland. damage stretches over 40-mile-long area south of dallas. closer to home, to new information in the landmark case of monsignor william lynn. his conviction was overturned a second time last week, now philadelphia's district attorney wants to reargue the case. jacqueline london is following the developments. what's the latest? >> keith, philadelphia district attorney seth williams held a news conference this afternoon announcing he's not giving up on the case without a fight. today his office filed an application for a reargument of monsignor lynn's case before the pennsylvania superior court. back in 2012, lynn became the first church official nationwide to be convicted of covering up sexual abuse by members of the

clergy. he's now served more than three years of his three to six-year prison term. last week his conviction was overturned by a panel awarding him a new trial. >> my office is committed to ensuring the safety of all the citizens of philadelphia, and today specifically the victim of monsignor william lynn. simply put, we will continue to use all of my office's resources to ensure that the defendant lynn remains in state custody. >> lynn's attorney says he is not surprised by the d.a.'s move since he never expected the legal battle to end quickly. he is asking a judge to release lynn. live in the digital operations center, jacqueline london, nbc 10 news. >> jackie, thank you. to new information now about the discovery of two bodies in berks county. police are calling it a murder-suicide. a relative found the 35-year-old woman and 58-year-old man's bodies at a home in mount penn

today. authorities tell us the man and woman were together, but not married. tell you what, folks, we are still waiting to learn if pennsylvania's budget battle will end today. governor tom wolf hasn't said if he'll sign the spending deal left for him by the state house and senate. lawmakers voted on the budget, then left town, dismissing many millions of dollars the governor wanted for schools. to this now, check out surveillance video, new surveillance video, of a robbery. you can clearly see the suspect holding a gun on an employee of the mini market demanding money. the man fled down 54th street with a bag of cash. police have not arrested a suspect. and talk about a holy heist, someone snatched baby jesus from a nativity scene at a church in easton on christmas eve, noless. a church member noticed the empty spot in the manger on spring garden street.

it's not the first time the statue has disappeared either. 12 years ago it was stolen during a college frat prank. it was later returned. because of that, baby jesus was secured with a cable. this time, though, it was cut. the church wants the statue returned, no questions asked. listen to this, someone swiped baby jesus from a nativity scene in clifton, new jersey. it's worth a few hundred bucks. plus are now reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding businesses. >> our first nativity ever in this parish, i'm very saddened by it someone thinks this is funny. >> and this isn't the first nativity theft in that area. according to the archdiocese, at least four other statue thefts have been reported. a man is dead after he was hit by a car while crossing roosevelt boulevard this morning. happened around 5:30 in philadelphia's oxford circle neighborhood. the driver did stop and likely won't face any charges. police say the victim was

crossing against a red light. investigators still don't know what started this house fire in montgomery county this morning. sky force 10 was over spring hill avenue before 8:00. crews quickly brought the fire under control. everyone inside the home got out safely. luckily, no one was hurt here. from one fire to another, a popular delaware bakery damaged in a christmas eve fire won't reopen for months. today the delaware fire marshals working to determine what started the fire at serpy's bakery, the family has been in business since the early 1950s. they tell nbc 10 they plan to reopen, but say a large portion of the building will have to be torn down and rebuilt. you remember these images, sky force 10 over that scene just after closing on christmas eve. the family tells us they are devastated by the fire, but appreciative of all the support from their friends and customers.

something completely different, today marks 15 years since the biggest mass murder in philadelphia history. on december 28th, 2000, ten people were lined up and shot in a crack house on lex street in west philadelphia. one victim was just 15 years old. seven of them died. the massacre was the result of a fight over a car. it took years for the killers to get caught. four men convicted are now in prison. happening now, people are gathering for a rally to honor a south jersey man killed by police during a traffic stop. >> reach for something, you're going to be [ bleep ] dead. >> last december reed was shot by bridgeton police officers when he got out of the car after being told not to move. it happened after police spotted a gun in the car during a traffic stop. the shooting sparked protests but the officers weren't indicted. tonight's vigil is on south

avenue and henry streets. three parks in upper darby will get spruced up thanks to a $10,000 grant. all in southeast part of the township will share the funds. improvements could include new pathways, benches, and lighting. the parks may also see new gaze gazebos. the money came from peco to conserve open space. students in high school are taking part in a basketball tournament. the 14th annual james g. atkinson memorial basketball classic kicked off today at rowan college in gloucester county. it's a tradition that honors the legacy of the former gloucester county free holder and allows students to show off athletic skills. all the money raised goes to scholarships to students who go to college. >> what we like about this tournament is it gives us a chance to have local students on our campus and for the folks that come, support our tournament and the money goes

peaked, but more rain is in the forecast. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> and meanwhile in our country we've got parts of the mississippi river near record levels. we've got very unusual sets of tornados in the plains states and in the deep south. weird stuff going on. we've got snow and sleet coming for some. one of the weird things is, we haven't had any in any part of the area, really, so far this season. we're tracking some heavy rain, looks like it's going to affect the morning rush and a cold new year out there. we have cloudy skies now, visibility is fine. we have a few sprinkles in parts of the area. 43 degrees now, the wind is east at 15 miles an hour, and it feels like it's in the 30s. we've got the wind chills back. temperature itself is still 40 degrees at allentown, pottstown,

westchester, trenton has a long way to go to get down to 32 and probably lower than that because the roads have been warm because the air has been so warm. mount pocono 30 degrees, and 41 in mount holly and glassboro, 43 degrees in millville. some of these places, all these places were in the 60s yesterday, that's why we're 20 to 25 degrees colder than at this time yesterday. and now that we're cold enough, this is live, and they are making snow at camel back. all of this turns white, now that the conditions are going to be getting a little bit better. going to get a bit of rain, but as we head toward the weekend, you're going to be in good shape and maybe for quite a while. we have winter weather advisories for the poconos. driving possible late tonight, first thing in the morning. berks county is going to be marginal for any kind of

significant threat because even though there's likely to be sleet here, it's going to be hard to get the temperature down actually to the freezing, below the freezing mark. we have to keep an eye on it, because that pink is sleet. and if the temperatures gets down low enough, you've got an issue. that's mostly toward midnight, because it's going to warm up towards day break. another area of heavy rain back to the west. let's see what happens hour by hour, the temperatures obviously go down into the 30s. in allentown, doylestown, and then maybe even near the freezing point. fairly close call for allentown, but again, the warm roads might help things. meanwhile, not even a close call in philadelphia and points to the south, way above the freezing mark and our issue is the heavy rain that's going to be coming in. look at this, 4:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m., temperature keeps going up. here comes more heavy rain right in the middle of the rush, but temperatures are now in the 50s and plenty warm in the lehigh co valley.

look at that, 68 degrees in dover. so we're going to see that is a 24-degree temperature contrast across the area at the same exact time tomorrow. so what do we see for the rest of the night? rain develops, little bit of a wintery mix farther to the north, generally north of i-78, temperatures rise 48 in philly and rise to 35 north and west by day break. heavy rain in the morning, then kind of warm in the afternoon, there's the temperature contrast, 50 to the north, 70 to the south for the high temperatures. and the seven-day forecast, fairly mild day on wednesday, with some rain coming in late in the day, wednesday night is wet, dries out on thursday just in time for new year's eve, then it is cold. it is january cold, as we head into january. >> surprise. thank you, glenn.

>> so long, warmth, hello, winter. much of the area will get rain. what you see on radar now is expected to send a mix of sleet and freezing rain to the lehigh valley and the poconos. and that could be a messy morning commute. this was the scene along route 22 in allentown this afternoon from one of our traffic cameras. things could look different here come tuesday. let's head to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, what's the timing on all this? >> well, we're going to be seeing, i think, the heaviest of the precipitation right around the morning rush. the issue is what type of prescription is going to be falling. mostly going to be in the form of rain, except up here. poconos, camelback where they are making snow now, cold enough to make snow, little bit of snow, little sleet overnight tonight, you can see the snow in the white, really isn't much of it up in northern pennsylvania. it's mostly in the pink area,

which would be sleet across the lehigh valley, much of this not reaching the ground yet, but it shows the atmosphere has a warm layer in it that is preechventi it from being all snow. patchy areas of lighter rain, not much prescription headed this way. you can see the advisories go all the way back to much of pennsylvania. winter weather advisory for the pocono mountains and likely to be necessary the one for the lehigh valley and berks county is kind of on the borderline of threats here because the temperature is going to be very close the freezing mark and certainly likely to be seeing some sleet for a good bit of the night tonight from i-78 northward. the rest of the area starts to see the rain and the rain increases as we go through the night, gets heavy at times for the morning rush, so that may be the issue for the morning rush around here, the heavy rain for the most part, because the temperature is way above

so are some of the staff that would normally be working this time of the year. >> normally everybody laid off for two or three months and give them their break. yeah, people had to stay on longer than they normally would. >> reporter: george already golfs year round, but says this unseasonably warmer weather makes it even better. >> course is mine, yeah, it's great. you can play much faster. >> reporter: on the flip side, some businesses cannot wait to have snow in the forecast, because not having snow has really cost them a lot of money. reporting live in cobbs creek, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. now the story of this dog who saved the day in delaware. listen to this, the pup sprang into action saturday when a pair of burglars busted into one family's home. today nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong caught up with the hero hound and his grateful owner. >> the dog's name is precious. >> reporter: cute name for a tough pup. on saturday night some would-be burglars clearly didn't see the

beware of dog signs, tried to kick in the door of the home. the home owner's sister was there alone, she knew to let precious the pit bull out of her crate. >> before she knew it, the door was being kicked open, so she unlocked the cage and the dog went after the person. my sister said she heard, "oh, crap, they have a dog." and took off. >> reporter: stephanie tells me precious is a sweet, loving dog but is trained to attack if the home or family is threatened. she says the burglars are lucky they got to their car before precious got to their legs. stephanie doesn't know why burglars chose her house, despite the fact her home is literally a couple hundred yards away from the police department, a stray bullet hit her house a couple years back. stephanie's sister wasn't able to get a good look at the guys that broke in, but they took off in a light colored sedan with tinted windows.

much screen time could mean in the long run.

this is nbc 10 news. >> now to the latest developments on a massive winter storm churning across the country. tornados, flooding, and blizzards like the one here in lubbock, texas. they are pounding the nation's midsection. nbc's chris pollone has the latest. >> reporter: in garland, texas, northeast of dallas, the damage assessment and cleanup is under way. >> whole ceiling, whole roof right there, gone, all in the living room. everywhere. >> reporter: nine tornados struck texas over the weekend, killing at least 11. >> everything happened in seconds. >> reporter: the tornado that hit garland was an ef4, packing winds up to 200 miles per hour. hundreds of homes are gone. >> still shocking. it really is. >> reporter: among those killed, an infant just three days old. >> be okay, baby, and i was holding her little fingers. >> reporter: the massive system brought heavy rain and flash floods to illinois, missouri,

and texas. cameras captured emergency responders rescuing a trapped driver in dallas. heavy rain sent the trinity river over its banks, turning roads to streams. and missouri soldiers among those killed when their vehicle overturned in flood water. >> it has been a very difficult several days, and this threat is clearly not over. >> reporter: in all, violent weather has killed at least 43 people since last week and the dangerous pattern isn't over yet. chris pollone, nbc news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> and on the warm side of that pattern we're having the warmest december ever recorded in philadelphia by a greater margin than any month has ever been, number one. record is just amazing. 13 degrees above average so far. snow and sleet for some. mostly sleet the way it's

looking now. tracking some heavy rain for the morning rush for parts of the area, and it's going to be a cold year. and right now we're kind of dry across most of the area, few sprinkles from time to time, couple balls of sleet from time to time. but look at the temperatures, 43 degrees. winds east at 15, feels like 36. got a wind chill out there, and we're 20 to 25 degrees colder than we were at this time yesterday, in case you were wondering. got wind on top of that, so it does feel a lot colder. it's 37 in quakertown, 38 in doylestown. watch the temperatures during the night, of course, see how close it gets to freezing. 30 in mount pocono. probably stay below freezing all night. 39 degrees in coatesville. 43, though, in wilmington. 39, chester county, up towards the lehigh valley, temperatures need to be watch ed closest.

wind coming right off the ocean. and winter weather advisory for the pocono mountains. they are going to get some snow, but mostly sleet and maybe even some freezing rain. conditions could be pretty serious up there. in berks county, the lehigh valley, borderline situation because the temperatures are going to be borderline. and right now, despite what's on the radar, only place reporting precipitation hitting the ground is reading. as far as the official reporting stations, everybody else has cloudy skies. so you can see a lot more on radar than what's being observed on the ground. low levels of the atmosphere are very dry. that pink is most likely the sleet, and it's surrounding the lehigh valley now, and so you keep getting this hour after hour, pretty soon it's going to saturate the rest of the atmosphere and leach the ground and then start piling up a little bit, mostly on the grassy surfaces and on cars.

big area of moisture is way back to the west, as you can see. now we'll watch the temperatures, of course, where there's really no threat of getting close to the freezing mark in philadelphia, but as we go farther to the north, you can see in allentown we could get close to that reading by midnight, and with this becoming a little bit heavier, we could have a little bit of ice accumulation up there. and certainly up in the poconos, it's 26 degrees in mount pocono for most of the night. look at the heavy rain that's coming in. as we get towards the morning rush, i think the biggest problem across most of the area for the rush tomorrow morning is going to be heavy rain. again, maybe not so much in cape may and southern delaware, at least not yet, but they are going to be getting it eventually. by 10:00 a.m., look at the computer model has it 68 degrees in dover and in millville. 36 in the poconos. don't get much of a bigger contrast than that. for the rest of the night tonight, we've got the rain

nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now at 6:00, a mixed bag for mother nature. our area will finally see the first signs of winter tonight, but the conditions will be different depending where you live. from chances of snow and sleet up in the poconos, to heavy rain in philadelphia, the temperatures are on a roller coaster ride and going back up overnight. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. it's our job to be prepared for the changing weather conditions. count on nbc 10 first alert weather for team coverage tonight. doug shimell is monitoring the conditions up in the lehigh valley, but we'll begin with nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, where is this system right now? >> well, the center of the main storm is still in the midwest. it's a huge storm, and on the east side of it, the warm side of it, on the edges, that's what

we're seeing right now. this is the eastern edge of a gigantic storm, same thing that produced a blizzard in new mexico and parts of texas. we have cloudy skies now, the temperatures above freezing across most of the area, so we're in good shape, but lehigh valley northward you see the pink, that is some sleet. most of it not reaching the ground yet, but some of it is, and it will have a greater and greater chance of doing that as it goes hour after hour and eventually saturates the rest of the atmosphere. it's dry near the ground. that's why it's not all reaching the ground. and there's not that much to the south and west. going to have to see this fill in as the night goes on and it will. precipitation is going to get heavier towards day break. that's why there's a winter weather advisory for the pocono mountains, a combination of snow, but mostly sleet and freezing rain there. lehigh valley and berks county, more of a
