philadelphia comes to a shocking end with his team preparing to close out the regular season against the giants. he is sent packing, fired one game shy of his third full season with the birds. kelly's methods never got off the ground here in philadelphia and apparently eagles owner had enough. so what's next for the eagles? we caught up with the pro football hall of famer for his take on chip kelly's firing. what did he have to say? >> if you are 30 years old and you are a fan, you have never seen a firing like this happen within the franchise. chip kelly was hired three season ago and they predicted this would happen. some are calling it three and out. chip kelly released after three seasons. >> you have to start over and i think it will be a while. >> the sports writer wrote the book on the eagles, literally. it's called the encyclopedia.

it is called a failed experiment. >> you have to reshape and rethink the organization top to bottom. you don't do that overnight. >> it has been three decades since a coach lasted less than three seasons. now at the helm, he lasted 14 seasons. >> for better or worse, it appears that it's worse. chip kelly reshaped this in his image. you take him out and bring another coach in, they will have to rebuild it all over. >> that could take years and involve each more dramatic moves. >> it's probably going to take a step or two back before they take a step forward. >> we're talked about how it went down and there was a lot of differing reports as well. with the news conference, that's slated for noon. reporting to keith jones, nbc news. >> the daily news is not mincing words about the firing.

they prepared fireworks for thursday's celebration. 5,000 rounds packed in tubes and placed on barges. this year you can watch it live on new year's eve here on nbc 10. you can see the zamboni hard at work alongside a helper at penn's landing. they made sure the ice was clean and looking for anyone looking to skate. it's going to feel a lot like ice skating weather. >> we will not be able to use the ice. we have temperatures at 70 degrees. it will feel more like winter when we switch the calendar. you have to get through december first. every day has been above normal. mild puts it mildly. a record december. the next rain chance is coming within the next 24 hours and we have a cold start to the new year. not bitter cold.

that might come later. the flag is not blowing hard enough to get rid of the stupid fog. the low clouds and drizzle out at 48 degrees to help keep the temperature up. the winds only 5 miles per hour and warmer than it was this time yesterday at 41 in allentown. managed to escape any wintry weather and we will probably stay above freezing and it did. it did have serious icing in parts of the poconos. look at the temperatures. this time of the night. way above the average high for this time of year. 52 degrees in dover. 11:00 at night. it's almost new year's. it's typical to be almost 14 degrees above average. if it was july and we were 14 degrees above average, it would be 100 every day. that's how extreme this is. this is shattering any records. unbelievable amounts.

patchy dense fog in the poconos. light fog in other parts of the area. it's not really dense. we don't expect it to be dense in the morning. it is cloudy and nothing significant on the radar. the drizzle drops too small to detect them. look at the temperatures as you go through the night. it doesn't drop much with the clouds around. very light winds. we start the day tomorrow. it's dry and cloudy and towards the end of the day, here comes the rain. not nearly as heavy as what we saw this morning. kind of patchy around there. it's all going to be gone by thursday. that's good timing because that is new year's eve. no threat of any precipitation. temperatures are above average for this time of year. great weather conditions there and for new year's day as well. tonight clouds and drizzle and mild for december. 43 degrees for the low.

i'm john clark. stunning that this happened today. a bold move firing chip kelly in his third season as eagles coach. he fired the personnel man and he will coach the final game against the giants. here's the letter to the fans. i evaluated the many factors as a team. as i watch the season unfold, i determined it was time to make a change. as we move forward, the search for a new head coach will be led by myself and howie roseman who got demoted when he got control. after the playoff hopes ended and yesterday. >> 100%. it's the same thing i said a year ago. unacceptable. >> i don't run the personnel department and i didn't say
