here, as you can see, a large number of families join revelers of all ages for this 6:00 show and with additional funding this year from sugar house, it will be a show like never before, some 5,000 individual fireworks, 14 and a half minutes, all of it sound track to the star wars theme music and synchronized perfectly by computer. the 300-foot barge carrying all of those fireworks is in place here in the delaware river just beyond where we're standing. we will be watching and bring you the very best view coming up. that is the latest live on the ground. i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> excitement building. for a check on our chilly forecast this new year's eve, let's go to glenn "hurricane" schwartz. this is what it's supposed to feel like this time of year, right glenn? >> absolutely, christmas eve, record warmth, and now it's new year's eve and this is fairly typical. the visibility is excellent, and the clouds are not low to the

ground. we don't have rain, we don't have fog, so we're in pretty good shape here. the temperature has continued to drop. it's now 45 degrees, but then that is still a little bit above average for this time of the night at this time of the year, and as we go through the evening hours we're going to see it drop to about 38 degrees by midnight. a lot colder weather coming in the seven day later. here's some stories making headlines on nbc 10 news at 6:00. a 75-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital tonight. philadelphia police say a robber shot her in the face on the way home from getting groceries this morning. it happened on erdrick street. the woman continued three blocks to her home to drop off her groceries before making the trip to the hospital. bill cosby's attorneys are firing back a day after he was charged with aggravated assault.

this morning his attorney appeared on the today show and said the charges against cosby are politically motivated. you may remember cosby's case was included in campaign ads for the race for montgomery county district attorney. d.a. elect kevin steele said new information came to light in july that allowed him to charge cosby. mayor nutter with some final business to attend to. today he announced plans for a project to build a park over i-95. the plan is to cover the highway to connect the city to the delaware river water front. it's part of the initiative to develop both the schuylkill and delaware river water fronts. and it is time now for the sugar house new year's eve fireworks on the water front. this is taking place just off penn's landing at the blue cross riverrink winter fest. the sugar house casino, the delaware river water front corporation, and nbc 10 and

newly released "star wars: the force awakened." families gathered right there at the blue cross riverrink, too, they were still ice skating during this incredible display. this party from 5:00 to 8:00. no matter how many times you see them, they are beautiful, aren't they? >> the sound, too. combination of the music, the pictures, then the bang, you know, the explosions. >> you can see the ice rink, that's the blue cross riverrink. people continue to skate throughout the entire display. kind of a neat setting for this. >> of course, with the star wars theme, appropriate for this time of the year and some of the greatest theme music in the history of movies. i just saw recently, and the music helps make it. and anybody who's seen any of the star wars movies can see the fireworks and everything, you think back to the whole series. >> takes you back, doesn't it? >> just adds to the effect.

>> this is terrific for the families and there's also going to be another fireworks show at the stroke of midnight. great weather for it, too. >> think about what the weather was like last night, how crummy that was and how bad this would have been if we would have had the clouds down near the ground. visibility is excellent out there. and last night the visibility was terrible, and we had rain and we had drizzle, and it was just awful and now we've got some good conditions. of course, it's getting colder now that we're ending the month of december, we have the end of the mild air, so seasonably cold weather coming in, nothing too extreme, and we have a dry stretch of weather that's going to be lasting for several days. great for the ride for wherever you want to go for this evening. you want good weather on new year's eve, a lot of crazy

people on the roads, that's bad enough. 45 degrees, the wind is down a little bit to 9 miles an hour, but it feels like 40, so the wind chill keeps going down a little bit. and the temperatures are going to keep going down. 52 today, 46 tomorrow, and closer to the normal levels as we go to saturday and sunday. and right now we're down close to the 40-degree mark, coatesville, pottstown, quakertown, doylestown, all at 41 degrees. 42 in kennett square, 44 in wilmington, mount holly, trenton. the clouds are preventing the temperatures from dropping faster. we still have a 50 out there, 51 degrees in lewes, delaware. say good-bye to the 50s for a good while. the wind chills in the 30s now. bundle up if you're headed out for your new year's eve activities. and then after that, you're going to need the winter coats as we go later on here. so we've got seasonably cold air coming in saturday and sunday, then a real shot, some arctic

air going into new england. we're just going to get on the edge of that, so monday and tuesday and wednesday of next week, really cold. things are going to ease up a little bit later next week, so it's not like we're going to get into the deep freeze and stay there, but it is going to be a colder month of january. we don't have any precipitation around for the rest of the evening, we have temperatures dropping to 38 degrees by midnight and for the mummers tomorrow, it's chilly. the wind increases later on during the morning. for the rest of the night tonight, it's just partly cloudy, it's seasonably cold, 32 for the low in philadelphia. and the wind diminishes. the wind picks up again tomorrow, but a lot of sunshine. we haven't seen much of that. 10 to 20 mile an hour winds, then again seasonably cold, lots of sunshine over the weekend, then it gets colder monday and even colder on monday. really cold.

for 31-year-old kenneth jones. he's accused of robbing two men at gunpoint earlier this month. police say a warrant had already been out for his arrest for similar crimes in montgomery county. there's a $7,500 reward for anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest. new at 6:00, a jersey shore police officer will not be charged for a deadly pedestrian crash nearly six months ago. the lacey township police officer was responding to a disturbance at the oyster creek nuclear generating station early on july 5th. the officer was speeding in a marked police cruiser on lacey road when he hit a pedestrian. that pedestrian was intoxicated and walked into the road against a red traffic light. we now know when dupont plans to lay off 1,700 people in delaware. the company's filings show most of the cuts will begin february 29th, ahead of the merger with dow chemical. the job cuts will continue through the end of march.

the layoffs will impact ten locations in delaware, including dupont's headquarters, where about 3,000 people work. ♪ and we are counting down until 2016. our nbc 10 countdown clock shows the new year is less than six hours away. new year's eve may be the biggest night of the year in atlantic, and this year some are taking that extravagance to another level. the plan to set a new world record at midnight using champagne. some 3,500 party goers at the playground pier will try to break a guinness world record for the most champagne corks popped at the same time. >> the record was 2,800 set in italy, so i think we're going to absolutely crush that record. >> atlantic city's casinos and many other hotels are completely booked tonight. unlike 2014, no casino closures in 2015. ♪

the mummers are doing their final rehearsals before their big new year's parade tomorrow. today the philadelphia mummers fancy brigade gave us a sneak peek of their routines at the convention center. the mummers parade starts at 9:00 tomorrow morning. and a live look again at the delaware river water front. if you are heading out tonight, the sugar house new year's eve fireworks on the water front will go off again one more time at midnight.
