now? >> reporter: well, we did just get an update from the police chief here in allentown who tells us the search is absolutely going to continue into the night. they are not going anywhere. however, it is getting very dark, it's getting much colder out here, and this boy was last seen not wearing a coat, shoes, or socks. let me show you behind me, the staging area. you can see a lot of search crews, some of them with allentown police, others with professional search crews throughout the northeast here on scene looking for the 5-year-old boy with autism who disappeared late last night. helicopters search the river bank near the boy's home as search teams and blood hounds track on foot trying to pick up a scent as the temperature drops and the skies get dark. >> we also have a drone that we fly out over top, good view of the area. >> reporter: 5-year-old boy with autism disappeared last night during a family's new year's eve party. he didn't have a coat, shoes, or socks. >> he was playing with his toys like he was supposed to with all

the other kids, and he was just downstairs and left out of nowhere. >> reporter: his family says he might be hiding, afraid to come out. police are asking for help from the public but warn that the boy is skittish. >> generally afraid of people, so we're asking people that if you were to come across him, that you do not call out his name, don't yell to him, just call us so we can get there as quickly as possible and secure him. >> reporter: his family is pleading for neighbors on the east end of allentown to keep their eyes open as this search approaches its second night. >> i don't know what he's going through, like i'm really scared that -- something happened. >> reporter: and that was his sister there, his family is u e urging neighbors on the east end to keep an eye out. meantime, the police chief did tell us they are focusing a lot of the search on water and bright lights, since this boy has autism, he is attracted to

those things. they did a search of the lehigh river via helicopter, so far they've come up empty. live in allentown, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. protesters clash with police at the mummers day parade today. black lives matter demonstrators say they specifically targeted the new year's eve tradition, citing the mummers use of black face in years past as one of the reasons. nbc 10's deanna durante joins us live. deanna, organizers of the mummers parade made strides to be more inclusive this year. >> reporter: they did. they tried to have more ethnically diverse groups present in the parade, also we were told by philadelphia police that there have been two arrests by those protesters, one for disorderly conduct, another person taken into custody for interrupting a meeting or procession. from bugs and bees, to toys. >> i know it's the mummers parade, seen a lot of guys in dresses. >> it's fun, it really is, the feathers and the glitter. it's just exciting.

>> reporter: many line the streets before dawn to get a good spot. >> happy new year to everybody. >> reporter: even 7-year-old samir says he always watches the parade at home. >> i saw a lot of people, and these. >> reporter: you got some beads, huh? >> yes. >> reporter: he's not the only little kid out for his first mummers parade. 9-month-old nicolas is doing his part to cheer on dad in the parade. >> every year. i have one just went to los angeles, usually comes with me, she's 26. >> reporter: youngest already dancing as they wait for it to begin, they just love the mummers. >> i can't even explain it. i used to work for 30 years right at 19th and market, and i always worked on holidays, and as soon as i got off, i couldn't wait to see the fancy. >> reporter: tradition is showing no signs of stopping, it's growing. although the parade route has changed, the brigades and bands

and comics are all stopping to include more bands and performers and ethnic bk backgrounds. >> different cultures that we've seen makes it more fun. yeah, more engaging, too. >> reporter: many in the crowd say they were unaware steps away protesters gathered to protest against police violence, showing support for raising the minimum wage and immigrant equality. >> rubs me the wrong way, quite actually, time and a place for things like that. >> reporter: again, police telling us they made two arrests of the protesters, nothing around the crowds gathering for the mummers parade. the arrests they tell us, again, one for disorderly conduct, another for interrupting a meeting or a procession. reporting live in center city, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. turning to our weather now, it feels like january on this new year's day, as it should. here's a live look at blue cross riverrink at penn's landing. skaters bundled up out there.

glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us now with his first alert forecast. glenn? >> you're right, it feels like january, and it has not felt like winter at all. december set all kinds of records. we have the flags blowing there, an indication of colder air starting to come in, a bit of a wind chill that we haven't seen. it's down to 34 degrees in pottstown, 35 in reading, 34 in lancaster, 37 in trenton. and we have wind on top of that. not a lot of wind, but it feels like it's in the 20s when you add it in. 27 in allentown and reading. 25 in lancaster and 19 at mount pocono. it's going to get a lot colder than that. we have a few flurries in the poconos, and now we have some in central pennsylvania, but things have quieted down at blue mountain where we saw some flurries earlier. the temperatures slowly dropping as the skies clear tonight, but

then they drop a whole lot more as we go into next week. more on those really cold temperatures with the seven day in a few minutes. we are hearing from bill cosby for the first time since he was charged with sexual assault. he sent this tweet saying, "friends and fans, thank you." bill cosby is free on a million dollars bail while he waits the next step in the legal process. the 78-year-old comedian was charged wednesday in montgomery county accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 2004 inside his home. cosby's attorneys call the case flawed and politically motivated. they'll probably try to delay the next hearing scheduled for january 14th. >> chances are they'll continue it simply because they have a lot of information to review with mr. cosby. >> the aggravated indecent assault charges carry up to ten years in prison. the movement of every septa

officer will soon be recorded while they are on duty. this picture today was tweeted out of body cameras. some officers who trained with the cameras last week may even start wearing them tonight, and every officer should be ready to use them within the week. the transit authority spent nearly $300,000 on the cameras. each officer is in charge of activating the camera to record any incident. outgoing philadelphia mayor michael nutter announced long-term plans to bury interstate 95 and columbus boulevard near penn's landing and transform that new space into a direct connection to the water front. funding is now in place for a full study of the plans shown in this rendering. it's meant to transform the space between chestnut and walnut streets into a green way. for decades the roadways have been a barrier to the water front, leaving one of philadelphia's greatest natural resources underutilized. >> feel like this whole section over here is a little kind of its own area. i feel like it's kind of cut off

from the actual old city, center city, this whole area over here. i think that would be great. >> mayor nutter admitted yesterday this project will really be in the hands of the city council, federal transportation officials, and his successor, jim kenney. with just three days left until philadelphia officially gets a new mayor, outgoing mayor michael nutter sent out this tweet, "thank you, philadelphia, for allowing me to serve eight years as mayor of my hometown. happy, healthy, and safe new year to all." and this week on nbc 10 at issue, a candid michael nutter reveals for the very first time how he felt when he took the oath of office. that's sunday morning at 11:30 right after "meet the press." that means incoming mayor jim kenney has a few days left to get ready. hiss inauguration ceremony is set for 10:00 monday morning. kenney is skipping the traditional inauguration ball and throwing a block party instead. he's bringing in a food truck

and students from the philadelphia high school for creative and performing arts will perform. now to hamilton township, mercer county, where a vip guest took part in the mayor's swearing in ceremony today. >> do solemnly swear. >> do solemnly swear. >> that's u.s. supreme court justice samuel alito administ administering the oath of office today for a former hamilton resident and graduated from princeton university. mayor yooety was elected to a full four-year term. she's held the office since 2012. on this new year's day, the philadelphia fire department is looking back on a history making year for fire safety. 12 fire deaths happened in 2015, the lowest number in the fire department's recorded history. that's compared with 32 deaths in 2014. and 52 people died back in 2006. the highest number in the last

decade. the fire department installed more than 10,000 smoke alarms in 2015. we're getting a firsthand look at the scene last night as flames engulfed a dubai skyscraper. a temple alum took this video and sent it to nbc 10. he was in the mall right next to the hotel when the fire started. and this was the scene today as crews continue to battle smoke and fire more than 12 hours after it started. at least a dozen people were injured from the fire or wildly evacuated. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire to start. tonight, hollywood is remembering natalie cole. she died last night of complications from ongoing health issues. ♪ that was some of cole's biggest hits, "unforgettable," which was first made famous by her father,

on marriage last night. quite the honeymoon, glenn, and cold for that dip in the water. >> yeah. 50-degree ocean today, but you know, in june i've seen temperatures in the 50s in the ocean. so they got off lucky this year, because a couple years ago the ocean temperature about 34 on january 1st. we're back to kind of a normal winter cold, average for early january, but, of course, it's been so warm it feels that much colder. we have a dry stretch, go ahead and wash your cars, it's not going to rain or snow for a while, and a brief arctic blast coming in early next week, and you'll feel that one. get the winter coat, the heavy winter coats, ready for next week. we have good visibility now, but the clouds hang around. 40 degrees, winds west at 13, feels like 33 and five degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. we got up to 52.

today's high 43. tomorrow's high about 43. sunday's high about 43. we're going to have windier conditions coming up. 34 in quakertown, doylestown, pottstown right now. 35 in coatesville and reading, so it's cooling down, even with the clouds hanging around, but they are breaking up and that will allow the temperatures to get into the 20s in parts of the area. tonight it's 38 in northeast philly and 37 in trenton and ricetown, and 38 in clayton, atlantic city airport, 40 degrees across much of delaware, 44 in lewes, where we were in the 50s yesterday. with the wind it feels, of course, even colder. we're used to having wind chills in the wintertime, and finally we have it. in the 20s to the north and west. so december is over, and officially nearly 14 degrees above normal.

how amazing is that? because we beat the all-time record by close to seven degrees. records all up and down the eastern half of the country, and our temperatures average more like what savannah, georgia, would average during the month of december. pretty amazing. clearing and colder tonight, 30 for the low in philadelphia, 25 north and west. winds diminish, they pick up tomorrow, sunny, breezy, cold, high temperatures in the low 40s. average for this time of year. then it's windier on sunday, making it feel even colder, then the temperature drops ten degrees on monday, feeling really cold, then down into the teens tuesday morning. that's in philadelphia. could be closer to ten in some of the suburbs and winds on top of that, but we ease up on the temperatures later in the week. danny pommells from comcast sportsnet. the eagles hope to finish the season in the win column. plus strong words from jason kelce in a comparison no eagles
