who went missing on new year's eve has been found dead. allentown officials just confirmed they found jayliel batista's body in a career. the mayor called it a sad day for allentown. police don't believe foul play was involved but they will conduct a full investigation. batista wandered away from a new year's eve party near south aubrey and south street thursday night. he was bare foot and without a coat. randy gyllenhaal has been covering the story from the start. he joins us live from allentown where they first discovered the boy's tablet. >> that was the big clue leading

to this horrible discovery. that tablet computer was found by a volunteer searcher walking along the canal bank. there have been hundreds out today. police canines and blood hounds were there, they got a scent pickup on the canal so they dispatched a team from the fire department into the water. they discovered the body of the 5-year-old boy 6 feet deep off the shoreline. his name is jayliel vega batista, he vanished on new year's eve just 5 years old wearing no socks, shoes or coat. police do say he was carrying his small orange tablet computer. let me show you some cell phone videos showing those volunteer searchers recovering the tablet in the water. i spoke with one of those volunteers who said they saw the orange glo of the tablet under water, fished it out and immediately followed 911. the area became swarmed with dive times and search dogs. the dive team went into the

that happened about two hours ago. the road is now back open. a chilly start to the first weekend of 2016. nbc 10 at north square park in philadelphia this morning. cold and breezy conditions were not enough to stop this group from playing some football. let's go to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist brittney shipp for a check of our forecast. brittney, it's finally feeling like winter. we could see freezing temperatures tonight. >> north and west temperatures will get into the 20s, freezing for philadelphia. if you plan on heading out tonight for dinner, make sure you bring your thicker puffy coats at 39 by 8:00 p.m., 11:30, 35, we will drop into the low 40s. temperatures throughout the region 42 philadelphia, 40 northeast philly, 73 in allentown and 43 in pottstown. as we head into tonight, a few locations north and west will drop down into the 30s.

we'll see mostly clear skies and wind speeds out of the west, 5 to 10 miles per hour. coming up i'll let you know how long we'll stay dry and tracking an arctic blast. i'll let you know how cool our temperatures will get. that's all coming up in our seven-day forecast. denise. >> an expanding mummers controversy. this year's parade was supposed to be more inclusive and diverse than years past. scandals reigniting a mummers firestorm with some insisting the city should no longer provide its blessing to the new year's tradition. nbc 10's george spencer spent the day tracking down both sides of this controversy. live along mummers' parade route on broad street. what can you tell us? >> reporter: there's still cleanup to be done out here. the bleachers are still up. police barricades still up along the parade route on broad street. the mummers are again sparking controversy. incoming mayor jim kinney's team says he will discuss the parade once he takes office next week.

with traditional music and dance, this group of mexican american marchers stepped off for the first time yesterday. it was supposed to be the year of mummers diversity. but elsewhere in the parade, this group donned brown face and taco costumes, hardly the inclusion latino advocates hoped for. >> just because you have latino troops that have been invited doesn't change the structure of a racist institution. >> reporter: focused on transgender icon caitlyn jenner, a satire um this member hurled a homophobic slur. captured on cell phone video. last night this man told us he was punched by parade participants amid anti-gay insults. >> this is people who know that what they are doing is offensive and continue to do so anyway. >> people who are actively, intimately involved in putting on this great parade really have to say enough is enough. >> we tried to track down finnegan's captain. >> this is george spencer from

nbc 10 -- >> reporter: by phone this morning and at his south philly home this afternoon. instead the group gave us this statement. this, quote, is not an apology for our skit going for the gold. if cross dressing is suddenly a problem and cause for ridicule our beloved memorialers parade may have a shorter future than we would like. they acknowledged this member's slur was unacceptable and banned him from their club entirely saying the group is wholeheartedly apologizing for the abrasive, gross and disturbing action. >> it really does put a shadow on the overall petroleumers day parade. >> it is an embarrassment for the city of philadelphia. every year it becomes an embarrassment for the city of philadelphia. >> just as our story was airing, got another press release from the mummers organization about that person captured in the cell phone video saying he has been banned from the finnegan's club and also will not be allowed to march with any of the other memorialers groups.

finnegan's group also saying they plan to host some sort of awareness or fundraiser for the lgtb community. in the meantime it is not clear which group was marching in brown face captured during yesterday's broadcast. it's a story we'll be following. we're live along the parade route along broad street in south philadelphia. i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. there are new firefighters ready to get to work tonight. >> 19th cadet class graduated. in addition to philadelphia firefighters another cadet will work at the prison and wohl will be a firefighter at upper darby. c cabettes go through weeks of training. >> veteran firefighters know for decades when comes need to go for training, they will continue to do that.

a valued member of the police department remembered for his service tonight. zeus a canine officer for more than three years passed away. zeus worked until 2012 when he had to retire because of hip problems. he helped with nine arrests and many assists on patrol. a post on the department facebook page says they will miss him greatly. surveying the damage, a look at devastation left behind by massive flooding that slammed the midwest this week. plus the next threat. brittney. >> our windchill is here, tracking even colder conditions as the weekend goes on. also as you head back to work next week, i'll let you know how cold we'll get. that's coming up in my full forecast.

batista found dead in a canal near his home. he ran away new year's eve around 11:00 at night. he was carrying a tablet but dependent have any shoes or socks. a tablet was found today by a volunteer searcher in the canal. the little boy's body was found a short time later by divers. new information tonight about the man who is on the run after allegedly killing two people at a bar in tel aviv, israel. relatives of the suspected shooter told israeli media he's a trouble man, traumatized after his brother was killed by police in 2006. police working to find a motive after the shooting but it comes after three months of almost daily palestinian attacks against israeli citizens and soldiers. a man facing charges after police say they found swords, a meat cleaver and stun gun near his car near the new england patriots stadium. police were notified about a suspicious man outside gillette stadium in foxboro,

massachusetts. that was about two hours before the stadium hosted the winter classic hockey game. miss say there were no threats to those attending the hockey game. the floods that washed over the midwest this week are now starting to recede. the cleanup and damage estimate will begin. in arnold missouri, storms dumped 10 inches of rain upstream and left 150 homes there under water. at least 11 levies have given way there. in all, 24 people are dead, two people remain missing. the governors of illinois and missouri have been out observing the damage. >> just as we stood ready in the response phase now we stand ready to work to make sure this region can recover as quickly as possible and families can get back on their feet. >> now the focus shifts downstream, places like memphis and vicksburg, mississippi are preparing for the surge of water headed their way next month. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> we've been tracking changes for our area as well. mainly colder temperatures. it feels like winter with our daytime highs closer to low 40s. our average for this year 41 degrees. i'm also tracking a dry spell, so we don't have another chan of showers for at least the next five days or so. an arctic blast is expected. if you think it's cold this weekend, wait until we head into monday and tuesday. for philadelphia we're at 42 degrees. our wind speeds out of the west northwest at 7 miles per hour. our feels like temperature is 38 degrees. visibility is clear. humidity at 42%. as we head into the rest of this evening, expect temperatures to drop into the mid-30s. by 11:00 p.m. overnight we'll get down to 32 and below freezing for our suburbs to the north and also to the west. temperature-wise throughout the rest of the region we're at 27 degrees here in the poconos, 33 in allentown, 34 pottstown, 33 in millville. already a chilly evening there.

atlantic city at 37 degrees. we'll continue with our breezy conditions heading into the rest tonight personal if you're closer to poconos. win gusts 27, 29 miles per hour and throughout the day on sunday we'll see these winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour. the poconos, trenton, wind gusts closer to 20 miles per hour for philadelphia and up to about 25 right along the shore. here is a closer look at our temperatures. here comes winter of that's the title. we'll continue to go into tomorrow, cold air locked in right over philadelphia. when you start to see the pink on the map, that's more of an arctic air mass that's going to move closer to us. it will reach its peak monday night into tuesday. that's when we'll see our coldest temperatures. then you'll notice all that pink retreats to the north. we're still dealing with cold air as we head into most of next week. eventually we'll start to see temperatures turning back above average into the 50s. feels like temperatures,

tomorrow 8:00 a.m., just below freezing in philadelphia, 28 in allentown. as we go through the day, still going to mainly feel like in the 30s though actual temperature will put into the mid-40s. then monday you'll start to notice more of that arctic air starting to move in because of our feels like temperatures by the time you get back to work in the teens for most of our region, this will be true as we head into tuesday morning as well. so tuesday is going to be the coldest day of the week. a closer look at our radar shot, we're not tracking anything, so nice and quiet. the big story is going to be our colder temperatures heading into the next three days or so. dry conditions stretching back west, colder for us tomorrow. our temperatures will be about a degree or so colder. 43 degrees pretty close to average, 40 for suburbs to the north and west. mostly clear skies tonight, 24 suburbs north and west and heading into tomorrow where temperatures will range between 40 and 46 degrees. lots of sunshine but definitely cold.
