right now, on nbc 10 news at 11:00, a 5-year-old boy found dead in a canal. we talked to the volunteer searcher whose clue ended the two-day search for the boy. good evening. i'm denise nakano. an autopsy is set for monday morning for the 5-year-old. police do not suspect any kind of foul play. the boy who had autism wandered away from a new year's eve party. he had no shoes and no coat. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has the latest from allentown. >> reporter: for more than 40 hours straight, police and volunteers here in allentown searched the woods and the river in the freezing cold.

that search ended today as this community now begins to grieve after the young boy's body was found in a shallow canal. an emotional prayer cuts through the cold night in allentown, just minutes after the terrible news spread, candlelit vigils popped up across the city. >> it's a blessing to have so many people come here and light a candle for a boy they didn't even know. >> reporter: the 5-year-old was found dead in a canal not far from where he disappeared. he vanished from a new year's eve party without a coat or shoes. he was carrying a small tablet computer. dive teams found the boy who has autism in about 6 feet of water. >> members of the allentown fire department dive team at that point in time discovered the body of the 5-year-old. preliminarily, this is being considered a tragic accident. >> reporter: officials say

canine dogs led them to the canal banks, but the biggest clue was found by a volunteer who located the boy's tablet underwater. cell phone video shows search teams fishing it out of the creek. >> there's a tablet in there floating, or on the bottom of the canal. i said, okay. so i walked over, i looked. and i said, darn, i think that is. >> thank you for all who assisted, who searched, who brought food for the officers, who prayed for our searchers. >> reporter: autism experts say some young children will wander away. they're often afraid of the public, complicating search efforts and many are attracted to bodies of water. >> every autistic child are different. some are drawn to it, some stay away from it. >> reporter: officials say they do not expect to file charges in this case. and an autopsy will be done on monday morning to determine cause of death. in allentown, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. there's a new commitment tonight to get rid of expressions of hate and bigotry

in future mummers parades. >> [ bleep ]. [ bleep ]. >> the mummers will also address the outcry over acts some people viewed as racist and transphobic. drew smith is live in center city to explain. drew? >> reporter: denise, you can see the cleanup is not even done out here. all the bariers are out here along the parade route. but already mummers organizers are getting together to get ready for next year. they're taking steps to prevent negativity from popping up again. >> [ bleep ]. [ bleep ] gays! >> reporter: it's the video clip that generated the most headlines from the parade on new year's day. it also prompted the heads of the mummers division to talk today about making changes. >> it sickened me, as it sickened just about everybody else.

it's absolutely intolerable. it's hate speech. >> reporter: george told us he's already in touch with diversity groups. he sees a need for dialogues about sensitivity and satire in going over the line. two acts prompted a backlash. this display about kaitlin jenner's transition. and these marchers in brown face dressed as tacos. >> this is people who know that what they're doing is offensive and continue to do so anyway. >> reporter: next year the mummers will require clubs performing an ethnic theme to have advisers and participants of that ethnicity. as for this guy, he's out. banned from marching with any group. a source with the mummers provided his name. and his address. two women told us he didn't live there. but they did not deny his role in this incident. >> it was fake. yeah. we want no part. >> reporter: the group he was part of now wants to participate

in an lgbt fund-raiser or event. >> if we can embrace this for a teaching moment for mummers, it will go further to help things. >> reporter: that spokesman did call most of the parade a big success, including the big introduction of diversity, included in the parade for the thirs time this year. but he said even a handful of hateful acts is too many. new at 11:00, a shooting victim is found on the edge of the university campus. a man began shooting at them. one of them was hurt. they sped away and stopped on widener's campus to call police. the victim is in surgery at the hospital. there are no arrests or motive. you're looking live at the rink where there are plenty of skaters. dealing with the dropping

in my seven-day forecast. 82 new philadelphia firefighters will new staff stations around the city. the 190th firefighter cadet class graduated today in a ceremony at temple university. in addition to the philadelphia firefighters, another cadet will work at the prison and one will be a firefighter in upper darby. the cadets go through 23 weeks of rigorous training to graduate from the fire academy. the philadelphia fire cadets are joining a department that showed the lowest number of fire deaths in history. there were 12 in 2015, compared to 32 the year before. still, a nationwide search is under way for a new fire commissioner under incoming mayor kenny. >> i hope i get a chance to continue the hard work that i've done.

new at 11:00, a woman is facing dui charges after police say she repeated hit a number of parked cars in atlantic city and it was all caught on camera. >> oh! no! >> a witness captured this video early new year's day at the tropicana hotel and casino. joann costas got into the car with the keys in the ignition. it was waiting in a valet lane to be parked. she hit four parked cars while trying to leave. trop cana security officers detained her and she was taken to the hospital. no one else was hurt. up next, isis inspired? that what authorities in israel are trying to figure out about a deadly shooting inside a bar in tel aviv. what we're learning tonight about the suspect.

tonight the search continues for a gunman who opened fire at bar in tel aviv, israel, killing two people and wounding several others. police have identified the shooter as 31-year-old arab-israeli shilham. this is video of him in court back in 2007. today police raided his home, arresting his brother, his father talked to the media, saying he was mentally unstable. police are still investigating the shooter's motive. they're looking into whether the attack may have been inspired by isis. back in our area tonight, some philadelphia high school basketball players are learning about good sportsmanship, and healthy competition. they took part in the 2016 high school basketball showcase, and philadelphia's benjamin franklin

arctic air works closer to philadelphia and new york. the good news is, it will be short-lived. monday night into tuesday, that's going to be the peak with our temperatures when they' thee the coldest. not even out of the 30s daytime highs monday and tuesday. we'll recover by the end of the work week. the feels-like temperature tomorrow morning, waking up to temperatures that feel like 28 degrees in philadelphia. feeling like 27 in pottstown. and 25 in allentown. by the afternoon, it's still going to feel like we're in the 30s. by monday morning, 7:00 a.m., it's going to feel like we're in the teens. so we have very cold air on its way towards us. it's going to stick around again until tuesday night. the radar shot shows quiet conditions. we're not tracking any rain. we're going to stay dry montana of the system here near florida is going to stay well to the south of us. for tomorrow, winter chill sticks around.
