be the coldest temperatures through the lehigh valley, upper montgomery county, bucks counties, 8 degrees bethlehem, 8 in pottstown, possibly 7 in quakertown, so it is going to be another cold night. bundle up tomorrow morning, bundle the kids up at the bus stop, too, tomorrow. aside from this, our afternoon temperatures will be warmer than today and the warmup keeps going through the weekend. i'll show you those numbers coming up. >> all right, sheena, you saw the numbers as the temperatures remain well below freezing. camden county's code blue emergency stretches into a second night. >> police officers went door to door to check on the disabled and elderly residents. nbc 10's south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is live tonight. >> reporter: jacqueline, that's right, and the code blue now stretching into its second night, also stretches well beyond camden city limits to include all municipalities in camden county. the goal to prevent the loss of life of people who simply do not have the means to keep warm.

over the past two years, blanch last her job, her car, house, and having close contact with her children. >> i got hurt, injured going to work. >> reporter: one thing she hasn't lost is hope. >> as soon as it started getting cold, i had a roof over my head. >> reporter: homeless since september, she found shelter with camden's volunteers of america right before the dramatic cold came over the region. every layer she's wearing today, donated. >> yes, those were donated. >> reporter: coat, everything? >> hat, yeah, everything donated. >> to have a roof over your head and heat in the extreme cold, what's that mean to you? >> it's a blessing, it really is. >> reporter: another blessing, operation guardian. >> we're coming around making sure your heating system is working properly. >> reporter: metro police went door to door to make certain camden's elderly and disabled population were not suffering inside their homes without heat, broken utilities, or dangerously placed space heaters.

>> when temperatures are as low as they are and dipping into the teens tonight, is it a matter of life and death? >> yes, it is. >> reporter: the sheltering and outreach all part of code blue guidelines. for her, she's now turned to a warmer future. >> i'm on the uphill, they are helping me a lot. >> reporter: that was good to hear, even though volunteers of america is not a traditional code blue shelter because they operate all year long, right now all of the 93 beds here for women and their children are spoken for. also the city tells me of the city's 600 homeless in camden, mostly all of them have been taken off the streets over the past 24 hours to find warmth. live in camden, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> and this sudden cold snap is also dangerous for pets in cumberland county. animal control officers rescued two dogs from frigid temperatures today. authorities left notices on the houses where they seized those dogs. investigators say the owners

could face neglect charges. you can get information about pets and shelters on the nbc 10 news app, plus track your weather. another major story today, it's not often you see the president wiping away tears, but it happened today as president obama revealed his five-step executive action plan to cut gun violence. the president got choked up when he spoke about the children killed in the sandy hook massacre. >> and from first graders in newtown. first graders. and from every family who never imagined that their loved one would be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun.

said, "the american people do not need more emotional, condescending lectures that are completely devoid of facts." so we wanted to find out how people in our area feel about the president's plan. lauren mayk joins us live from a gun range in north philadelphia. lauren? >> reporter: good evening. one of the first things the owner here told me is how he has worked to keep trouble out of his store. he takes pride in making sure people play by the rules. he's just not sure there needs to be more of them. at delaware valley sports center, anthony calls it a privilege to sell firearms, and himself the first line of defense. >> you know, we try to be as diligent as possible, you know, making sure that firearms aren't going into the wrong hands. >> reporter: you'll get a background check before buying a gun here, but when it comes to more gun buying regulations from the president? >> i think there's enough regulation, personally, as an

american citizen. there's plenty of laws on the books. >> reporter: he's not sure why new regulations are needed, but he knows it's been busy here, especially after the deadly shooting in san bernardino. >> people out there, the citizenry of this country is scared to death. >> reporter: of what? >> terrorists. they are scared of what's going on out there, they are scared of people that come out of nowhere and maybe decide to take them out. >> reporter: 21-year-old sosa came to shoot for the first time. something you imagined yourself doing before? >> never, never, never. i never knew i would touch a gun. >> reporter: when did that change? >> very recently, especially with the -- all these violent threats and everyone getting a gun and gun shootings everywhere. >> reporter: this, she hopes, will make her feel safer. she's okay with more regulations. >> seems it's been easy for people to get guns, especially young people, younger people, which to me scares me. >> reporter: anthony says existing rules need to be enforced, but he understands what the president is trying to

do. >> i have no problem with you putting on more staff, being more vigilant, you know, the monitoring and what not. i think that's a great idea, okay, we don't want bad people to have firearms. we don't want bad gun dealers either. >> reporter: it could take some time to determine what will change and where, just who will be required to become a licensed dealer now. i spoke with pennsylvania governor tom wolf today and asked him for his opinion on this. he tells me he still has to look at the president's order to determine how it will affect pennsylvania. live in northeast philadelphia, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. today's speech is now a topic for the presidential candidates. after this newscast "nbc nightly news" with lester holt will look into how gun control plays out in the race. breaking news in the bill cosby case. two hours ago a judge delayed cosby's wife camille's deposition set for tomorrow in springfield, massachusetts.

the comedian's wife was to answer questions in a civil defamation suit filed by several women alleging the comedian allowed his representatives to paint them as liars after they accused him of sexually assaulting them. tonight the philadelphia police department has a new leader. richard ross jr. was sworn in this morning at his alma mater, central high school. ross and new philadelphia mayor jim kenney promised to focus on improved community relations. ross acknowledges taking the reins of the department at a time of great tension between police and citizens nationally. he says change will happen gradually. >> it's steps. you have to roll up your sleeves, get to know the people that live and work here, demonstrate to them that you're going to be responsible to them. >> reporter: the new commissioner also promises his department of 6,000-plus officers will incorporate body cameras and continue the reforms launched under retired commissioner charles ramsey. >> and yesterday on his last day as commissioner, charles ramsey

suspended an officer for a second time in six years. police arrested derek louis on domestic violation charges. police picked up officer lewis on december 28th accused of simple assault and harassment. the nine-year veteran had an altercation with a woman. back in 2010 ramsey suspended lewis after he got into a fight with his girlfriend, but he did get his job back. a search is under way for a person who stole a car with a sleeping child inside. take a look at this video in philadelphia's frankford neighborhood. police tell us the child's step father left him sleeping inside his running car while he went inside the store. someone drove away in that car, police found the vehicle about a half hour later with the boy still inside. nbc 10 was there as the boy was reunited with his parents. if you know anything about this incident, call police. new at 6:00, the suspects known as ft. dix five have their

day in court tomorrow. governor christie mentioned this case as he campaigns for president. he prosecuted the case in 2008 as the u.s. attorney in new jersey. three brothers were convicted in a plot to attack the military base in burlington county. supporters of the suspects plan to protest again tomorrow outside the courthouse, saying it was one of the most malicious trials in the war on terrorism. after serving two months overseas, 20 delaware airmen are back home with their families tonight. februa they arrived at their base in new castle this morning. they just completed a 60-day mission in southwest asia. the airmen are from the 166th operations and medical squadron. the democratic national convention here in philadelphia now just six months away. today the application process opens to become a delegate to represent the new jersey democratic state committee during that july convention. you have until march to apply online, then the delegation will be selected by june. the dnc convention runs july

25th until the 28th. a new gamble in atlantic city for stockton university. the university got the green light for $17 million of funding for a satellite campus at a different location in a.c. the project is only in the design phase. stockton tried to open after it first bought the casino but ran into legal restrictions. the university in galloway township is in the process of selling that property to developer bart blatstein. coming up next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, a cartoon drawing plenty of criticism. tonight, why law enforcement is not laughing about this artwork. plus, crab fries on campus. it's the first as a restaurant tries something new. plus, a bitter cold night ahead. some areas already dropping into the teens and some spots will be in the single digits tomorrow morning. how cold it will get coming up.

bridge and several lanes are still closed tonight. >> new at 6:00, a cartoon controversy. here it is right here, depicts an officer debating whether a baby's bottle right here is dangerous. >> law enforcement across delaware, they are not laughing. delaware bureau reporter tim furlong reports. >> you know, to me this was just a gratuitous cheap shot. >> reporter: that's what he says about this cartoon. the cartoon by an area artist shows an officer pointing a gun at baby new year with his bottle and the auy say in light of hig publicized police related shootings around the country, this cartoon is unfair to law enforcement agencies working to improve community relation. >> i don't think it's satire. i think it was meant to be inflammatory. >> the police shouldn't feel it's unfair, because it's the truth, it's what's going on. >> reporter: i did find some who say officers shouldn't be

defended and the cartoon brings up an issue that should be talked about, but the drove officer caught on dash camm kicking a man in the face was recently acquitted, there are raw nerves in the community. the journal did post letters from readers, saying the cartoon was obscene and poor taste. he told me on the phone the cartoon is a slap in the face. i e-mailed, called, tweeted, just trying to get their side of the story to see why they decided to print that cartoon and whose decision it was and did they expect this response from law enforcement, even tried to reach out to the cartoonist on facebook, but so far nobody's gotten back to me. the paper certainly has the right to print what it wants and certainly some are okay with the cartoon, but many officers say they are working to build public trust, they say this is an outrage. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. college students at rowan will have a philly favorite on

campus, chickies and pete's is opening. the famous crab fries are already dished out down the shore at the airport and at casinos. construction begins in just a few months. from fire to ice, look at this, a clubhouse at an overbrook golf course was destroyed in an overnight fire, cobbs creek golf club has been around since 1916. it took firefighters hours to get it under control. they battled frigid temperatures and once that fire was out, this is what the clubhouse looked like, turned into an ice house. the cause of the fire still not clear tonight. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, bundle up again tonight and early tomorrow morning, we're going to be in the teens most of the area again tonight. areas certainly expecting single digit morning low temperatures,

but tomorrow afternoon we will be warmer than today. today we only topped out around freezing. tomorrow will be closer to 40 degrees, so seasonably cool tomorrow, then we go into the weekend, we keep on warming up, but that is going to come with rain. rain in time for the weekend. right now temperatures are dropping quickly, 19 degrees in the poconos, 29 in allentown, 40 in philadelphia, 26 degrees in trenton and millville has dropped to 19 degrees. that's one area in new jersey where temperatures fall very quickly and we expect a very cold morning low there, mostly single digits, 23 degrees right now in glassboro. clearer skies and lighter winds. overnight, look at what the temperatures are going to do by 7:00 in the morning, most of the area will be in the middle to upper teens, but those spots north and west expect single digits. clear skies across the area currently, and we're going to stay dry through the next several days. big area of high pressure is going to keep us dry, mostly through the rest of the week until late friday night, but

that flow is pulling down that cold air from the north. there you see single digits for tonight through the lehigh valley, philadelphia area middle to upper teens, most of south jersey and delaware in the teens, and that big area of high pressure is going to keep us cool tomorrow even through the afternoon, but at least warmer than today. that's that cold air you saw streaming down from canada. that high moves offshore wednesday and thursday, we have the gradual warmup on the way before the week is over, even going into friday and the weekend, but at this time we start to see the approach of rain. temperatures look too warm for anything else at this point. tonight low temperatures, 8 degrees allentown, 9 quakertown, 8 degrees in reading, 12 for trenton. 13 norristown. 17 for the low in philadelphia, 14 chester and westchester. 15 for wilmington and dover. cape may, atlantic city around the middle teens tomorrow morning. vineland could be around 6 degrees. these numbers will hit around sunrise tomorrow morning. cold start to the day.

afternoon highs, though, around 40 degrees. that is normal for this time of the year, but it will be not as cold as it was this afternoon. for thursday, low 40s. friday mid 40s, then we actually start to climb a bit above average and for friday night we have showers approaching. saturday and sunday the rain moves in. i think sunday we'll have a better rain chance than saturday, highs in the low 50s. after that we get colder and windy to start next week with highs around 40 again. i'm john clark, we're going to talk about who the eagles interviewed today in their coaching search and the quarterback who played under the candidate. that is next.
