chamonix team hit the road tonight. >> chamonix played against penn ridge high school. it was already going to be a tough matchup, but with all the controversy surrounding the coach it made it even more difficult. when the basketball team was on the hardwood again tonight but this time without a visible and vocal presence on the sidelines. >> offensive foul and a technical. >> their head coach jerry divine is on administrative leave after this video shows him possibly head butting the referee in response to an offensive foul being called during last night's game. were you surprised at how he reacted? >> absolutely. you know? i wouldn't expect that from him. but i know the kind of person he is, and he's a respectable person. >> reporter: many of the parents of the players on the team are standing by the coach, despite not condoning his behavior. they say they were playing their biggest rival in a close game.

emotions were running high. and the incident came after what they believed were a series of bad calls. >> it was almost like disgusting watching a coach from, you know, the coaches are supposed to be showing an example to the students how to react. >> reporter: tonight coach john mason stepped in and his pep talk tried to refocus the team. >> just all about having fun. a disappointing thing. >> reporter: the future of jerry divine both as a coach and a teacher at the high school is under review. >> reporter: chamonix lost the game against pen ridge high school. coach mason says the drama surrounding coach divine was not a factor. meanwhile, it's still unclear when or if coach divine will return. reporting live outside of penn ridge high school. aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. another cold blast from mother nature tonight.

nbc 10 in center city earlier this evening. but the frigid temperatures aren't quite here to stay just yet. >> now that it actually feels like winter, it's time to hit the slopes. camelback mountain resort officially reopens for skiing and snowboarding tomorrow. they've been making snow around the clock. >> it's been a long wait. let's get to sheena parveen. how cold will it be when we wake up? >> everyone will need to bundle up especially at the bus stop like we've seen over the past couple of mornings. it's going to be really cold, well below freezing for the morning hours north and west by 7:00 a.m. expect temperatures right around 11 degrees in some spots in the lehigh valley. 23 degrees by 7:00 a.m. new jersey and delaware most areas to the middle or upper teens. but for the afternoon we'll be a little bit milder than today. by 2:00 p.m. temperatures should be right around the mid to low 40s. here's where we're sitting right now. allentown is already down to 19 degrees, 30 in philadelphia, 20

there they are on your screen for just another second or two. good luck, everybody. >> i don't hear any screams in the building. >> not here. >> tonight a warning for everyone trying out those popular new hoverboards. that hot gadget could turn you into a target. >> keith jones shows us thieves are turning violent to get their hands on one. >> they're the hot new trend. they're fast, fun, not the mention expensive. and that's why police say these kids with these hofberboards are becoming a target. take the surveillance video shot two days after christmas. you see a teen riding a hoverboard in the francisville neighborhood. three teens roll up on their bikes, then if you look closely, they punch him and steal the kid's pricey christmas gift. they cycle off. take a good hard look. this wasn't the first incident. it happened a week earlier this time in west philly. the suspect had weapons. >> they approach, pull out a handgun and then immediately take the hoverboard of one of

the teens. >> reporter: philly police says these crimes are happening more and more. look, you can actually see one of the gunmen at the shepherd rec center. they skaert and two make off with bags, phones and a red hoverboard. the motive, the cost and resale value. some good for as high as 1200. the cheapest, 300 bucks. >> most of these incidents happen, they're local. it's usually somebody right from the neighborhood. there's a possibility they might be riding around on this hoverboard in the neighborhood. >> reporter: police need your help. they hope to catch these hovering crooks before they strike again. keith jones, nbc 10 news. developing right now, china's stocks were temporarily suspended from trading thursday after more than a 7% plunge in early trading. the second halt in trading this week. and the latest showing of investor panic in china's troubled stock markets. and right now futures are down 160 points on the dow.

we'll have much more on the stock market slide starting at 4:00 a.m. on nbc 10 news today. on the same duber black drivers protested in philadelphia, a lawsuit has been filed against the ride sharing service. the plaintiffs say they're being misclassified as independent contractors instead of employees so that uber can avoid paying hourly and overtime wages and other benefits. uber released a statement to nbc 10 saying if drivers were classified as employees, they would, quote, lose the personal flexibility they value most. they would have set shifts, earn a fixed hourly wage and be unable to use other ride sharing apps. end quote. israel says it will close its consulate here in philadelphia by the end of this year. mayor jim kenney says he'll do what he can to keep it open. mayor kenney's office says it's

disappointed since philadelphia has a sister city relationship with tel aviv. the consulate in center city is one of six planned closures around the world. all part of a cost saving measure. a decision to close the consulate two years ago was canceled thanks in part by efforts of former mayor michael nutter and the jewish community. nbc 10 in langhorne tonight. the board listened as the community weighed in on keeping the elementary school opened. the board postponed the vote until april. it's considered closing the school. a hearing for lower south hampton will be held tomorrow night. a radnor man is due in court to face charges in the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old relative. police arrested charles robinson last week on his 60th birthday. they say the alleged abuse went on for several years. robinson was also involved with the boy scouts of america, youth groups and a local church. investigators fear more victims

may be out there and they're asking anyone with concerns about robinson to contact them. the texas state trooper who arrested sandra bland will be fired now that he's charged with perjury. >> get out of the car! >> today a grand jury indicted trooper brian insin ya saying he lied about how he removed planned from her car when she refused to get out. she died three days later in jail. her death was ruled a suicide. one of the baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death will have to testify against another officer charged in the case. today a judge ruled william porter can be compelled to testify in the trial of police wagon driver caesar goodson. jury selection is set to begin monday. goodson's trial is for second degree murder. porter is scheduled to be tried again in june.

protesters made their calls for justice heard outside the federal courthouse in canton today. they say the five men convicted of conspiring to kill ft. dix shoulders were caught in a government sting targeting muslims. all three brothers and their original public defenders were questioned today. >> my brother's one of the hardest working men i know. they built this country. we're roofing and doing construction in this country. we were building it, building housing, doing roofs, how are people like that going to destroy the country we live? >> the brothers are serving life sentences without parole. the same judge who presided over the 2008 trial will now decide if those attorneys wrongfully persuaded the men to avoid testifying in their own defense. from our jersey shore bureau tonight new action on the controversial issue of allowing public access to the state's beaches and waterways. a pair of state lawmakers plan s to introduce a bill tomorrow to

mummers a new year's day institution. but this year the parade ushered in controversy. critics say some acts like this one where marchers were captured in brown face dressed like tacos or another that parodied the gender transition of caitlyn jenner. mayor kenney says something has to change. >> you can't pick on trans people, you can't pick on gay people and you can't pick on immigrant. and it's not funny. >> there has to be a level of accountability built in because they haven't been able to do it themselves. >> mayor kenney's staff is considering changes such as sensitivity training. a mummer spokesman says the groups are already penalizing members for egregious violations. homeland security made an announcement that sent shivers through local immigrant communities. >> immigration agents have begun arresting and deporting families that crossed the border, many fleeing violence in central

america. >> there's real concern they'll spread here. randy gyllenhaal joins us from center city with details. >> reporter: it's causing a lot of fear, but immigration officials do tell nbc 10 the raids are not happening in philadelphia but in places like georgia and north carolina, 120 people have been arrested including families with young children, and tonight in south philly, a meeting was held as paranoia begins to take over. in a packed south philly meeting room families gather with burning questions. fear of a raid has sent many into hiding, some not showing up to work or school. >> i started getting calls on sunday. and it's been nonstop ever since. >> reporter: advocates explain families do have rights, to see an attorney and see a signed warrant. but the worry is everywhere.

>> you have the right to remain silent and a right to defend your case. >> reporter: the new enforcement targets faeps who have arrived in the past two years including young children fleeing violence in central america. advocates say the feds are deporting families back into danger. >> they're saying we're targeting women and children. >> but officials say all have gone through the courts and been denied their claims of asylum. that hasn't stopped the paranoia. >> if you lived here for a long time and built up equities in the united states, i don't think ice is going to come knocking down your door. >> reporter: he says most undocumented immigrants won't be affected by the new raids, but he does worry that the ones who are scooped up won't have proper legal representation. >> and by rushing these cases through, i think a lot of well-founded claims have probably been denied. >> reporter: but homeland security says they're simply enforcing the law, deporting those who crossed over the border illegally. while so far this enforcement

has targeted states in the south, the homeland security director did say additional enforcement could be coming down the pipe. live in center city, randy gillen hal, nbc 10 news. today the latino community celebrated three kings day in kensington. the council of spanish speaking americans taught hundreds of kids the pib lickal story of the three wise men gibbing gifts to baby jesus. philadelphia district attorney seth williams dressed up as one of the kings, then the council gave presents to the children, many of whom are in the foster program. a philadelphia couple is getting evicted just weeks after the public donated thousands of dollars to give them a new home. >> those donations poured in after the then-homeless couple's son was found alone in love park. chosen ministries raised $12,000 to help the family rent a home for a year so they could regain custody of their chkids.

now they said the couple missed a hearing, resisted counseling and failed a drug test. >> make us feel like we're the type of people that we want to be lazy or we got a house, we're really not that toip of people. >> chosen 300 tells nbc 10 it will release the rest of the money raised if the court says the couple are ready to get their two children back. we've got several reports of pipes bursting at homes along the jersey shore. firefighter say they've been dealing with a wave of water leaks in ocean city and cape may. they say some homeowners may not have winterized vacation houses yet since we had such a warm december. tonight's overnight temperatures not going to help too much with that situation. >> no, we're going to be cold again as we go through tonight. many areas north and west right around the low teens. some spots could be around 11 degrees in the lehigh valley tonight. another cold night for the area.

you're definitely going to want to bundle up tomorrow morning. into the weekend, we keep on warming up. today we were 8 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. we'll be warming into the 50s for your saturday and sunday. that will come with some rain. temperature wise today we were warmer than yesterday. today we got to 40. that's actually the normal high for this time of the year. so seasonably cold today. 46 tomorrow and friday, so there you see the warm-up coming and that continues. if you've been wondering what it looks like up at the ski resorts. this is blue mountain right now. and really they've done a great job with the snow. temperatures cold enough to support the snowfall. they're still making snow right now. we'll continue to see that as we go through i'm sure the next several weeks in place. temperatures as we go through the overnight hours. look at the trend in the philadelphia area. overnight mid-20s. that's where we'll bottom out in philadelphia. but a bigger rise from about 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 in the morning, about a ten-degree jump

with those temperatures. you will notice tomorrow he be milder than it was today. but at least still nice and dry outside. temperature in philadelphia, 30 degrees, we're down to 19 in allentown, 20 in millville. you saw the temperatures will be dropping as we go overnight tonight. nice and dry on radar. nothing really in the way of rain or any type of precip, coming here in the next 24 hours. it's all pretty far back off to our west. rain down around texas. our next shot at precip will be rain with our temperatures warming up for the weekend. this is future weather tomorrow. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds, but we still stay dry through the afternoon. now we go into friday. still dry through the day. more clouds as we go through friday night. here's friday 10:00, we do expect late rain showers. then we go to saturday. most of the day saturday will be dry, just cloudy and milder with temperatures in the 50s. late saturday night, rain moves in, overnight into sunday morning. that's 6:00 a.m. sunday.
