that breaking news is a mess for drivers in mercer county. skyforce 10 is over 95 north near exit 7 and route 206 in lawrence township. this is just over an hour ago where a truck overturned on the road. it spilled scrap metal all over the highway, as you see, and that has traffic backed up. luckily, no one was hurt. this just in, close call. the frantic moment this morning to free 17 miners trapped in a salt mine in upstate new york and this story has a happy ending. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. 17 miners safe at this hour after becoming trapped underground in new york state. we have this story from lancing, new york.

>> reporter: nine hours after an elevator became stuck here at the cargill salt mine, all 17 miners have been rescued. cargill says traditionally their mine is a safe one and they never expected something like this could happen. cargill believes one of the vertical beams became loose under the ill separator causing it to become stuck. however they say the elevator is still in the shaft and needs to be freed before they know why. one person went down in the basket to put safety harnesses on the miners before being lifted to safety. there are no injuries. the mine manager says the 17 men are just cold after being stuck 900 feet underground. >> they huddled together, they did what they could do to keep each other warm and keep each other's spirits up.vered the be they could and prioritized who should come out first themselves. it's impressive say-to-say how well that situation.

>> reporter: cargill says all 17 men have been reunited safely with their families. alex resila from lansing, nbc news. clouds are hanging around today but we're dealing with a more comfortable morning than yesterday. here's a live look at boat house row in philadelphia. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. hey, glenn. >> vai, it's warmer than a couple days ago. despite all the cloud cover you can see it's overcast out there. the flag not moving very much. there's not very much wind at all it's 40 in philadelphia, that's the average high this time of year but look to the north and west. it's 32 in allentown and reading and lancaster, 34 in pottstown. some of these places may not get out of the 30s today while other

parts of the area get well into the 40s. you can see allentown's three degrees warmer than they were at this time yesterday while atlantic city is 10 degrees warmer. is so there will be a variation if north to south. despite the cloud cover, there's nothing on the radar. we don't expect any rain during the day. it will stay cloudy. the temperatures getting into the low 40s in the philadelphia area and points to the south and very little wind as you can see. there is rain along with warmer weather on the way. i'll have the timing on that in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn. it's finally ski season in our area. camelback mountain in the poconos is now open. skiers wasted no times hitting the slopes. nbc 10 cameras were there as people arrived early this morning to buckle up and start skiing. a robber ends up getting trash

instead of cash just before 12:0 this morning. the owner of chester pizza was held up at gunpoint. police told us he thought he was getting bags of money because the store was closing tonight. the owner was not hurt. a driver lost control and crashed into a concrete pole in the lawndale section of philadelphia. the crash damaged a park minivan. an auto repair business suffered property damage. this court side controversy goes viral. neshaminy played penn ridge high school. head coach jerry devine was put on administrative leave after this viral video shows him possibly head-butting the referee in response to the call a game that happened tuesday night. neshaminy was playing their

biggest rival. parents say the game was close, emotions were really high and the incident came after what they believe was a series of bad calls. >> i wouldn't expect that from hi him. >> the coaches are supposed to be showing an example to the students how to react. >> jerry devine's future as a coach and teacher at neshaminy high school is under review. philadelphia police hope new video can help them catch an alleged package thief. a camera captured a young girl walking up to a door in south hancock street in pennsport. it appears she can't pick up the package because of its weight. a few minutes later a grown man returns, grabs the package and walks off. if you happen to recognize either person, soul detectives. philadelphia detectives hope the public can help them identify

alleged appliance thieves caught on camera. video showing them carrying a washer/drier set and an fen out of the home on north howard street in kensington. the men also carried out three twin mattresses. if you happen to recognize any of these three suspects you're asked to call east detective division. happening now, the new jersey state assembly is holding a public hearing on a plan that would change the way atlantic city casinos pay property taxes. if it's passed, casinos would pay aa set amount for property taxes over the next 15 years instead of having taxes change from year to year. some financial experts say if something isn't done soon, atlantic city could go bankrupt. a vote on the bill is expected early next week. in about 25 minutes, superintendent william height will give schools their report card. he'll release the progress report for the 2014/2015 school year. it assigned scores to schools

based on achievement and progress. 18 schools will be recognized as city leaders or peer leaders. mayor jim kenny will join the superintendent to give awards to those schools. the fate of a becomes county school won't be decided until the spring. last night in langhorn, the neshaminy school board listened to pleas to keep a school open. the board is considering closing heckman along with lower southampton elementary as part of the district's effort to consolidate schools due to low enrollment. a hearing for lower southampton will be held tonight. peterson played quarter back for the eagles back in the late '90s. another name on the eagles list, giants offensive coordinator ben

one year ago to the day after the "charlie hebdo" attacks, authorities are investigating a possible terror attack in paris. police shot and killed a knife-wielding man who tried to enter a police station. police say the man called out "god is great" in arabic and it turned out he was wearing a fake explosives belt." french president francois hollande marked the anniversary of the "charlie hebdo" attack by saluting police and soldiers on this date last year. two french-born brothers killed 11 people inside the offices of the satirical magazine. a muslim policeman outside was also killed. over the next two days, an

accomplice shot a policewoman to death then stormed a kosher supermarket killing four hostages. all three gunmen later died. happening now we are watching wall street as u.s. stocks opened sharply lower after china's main stock index plunged again. this is a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange. china's stocks fell 7% today after less than half an hour of trading triggered an automatic halt in trading for second time this week. the price of oil sank to its lowest level in 12 years as traders worried a slump in china would mean lower global demand for energy. people in california are preparing for several more days of rain, wind, and snow from a strong el nino. in southern california, heavy rain turned freeways into highway this is week and mudslides are threatening homes in that area. meanwhile, in the north, drivers dealing with heavy snow like

that. forecasters say there won't be a break in the weather in l tomorrow and another storm system could arrive this weekend. >> reporter: el nino is at record levels and it had something to do with our record warm december. not just here but over the entire eastern half of the country. we've got clouds around right now and we'll see a fair amount of clouds the next several days. we'll get back into the 50s before any colder air starts to come in and we do have rain in the forecast for the weekend. not a total washout but it will rain over the weekend. cloudy skies across much of the asia right now. 40 degrees, no wind, eight degrees warmer than it was this time yesterday. so starting off warmer because the clouds came inover night. 32 on tuesday, 40 yesterday, 43 today. 46 tomorrow.

then over the weekend we go up into the 50s but it won't keep climbing like that. 11 in mount pocono. 14 for this morning's low. 15 in reading, 18 in mount holly but 28 in philadelphia. again, the clouds prevented it from going even colder. 23 in millville, 16 degrees in toms river. it won't be that cold tonight, either. 307b8 2 in -- only 32 in allent. so with clouds and low temperatures it won't warm up a lot today. we have the cold air in place but the arctic air is still far away so it will take a while before this changes. saturday and sunday some milder air starts to come in. sunday well into the 50s but we have a surge of arctic air

coming in next week. the worst will come into new england and we'll be seeing lower temperatures next week than what we are seeing. despite the clouds, they're not that thick. but back to the west it's been incredibly wet in mississippi, flooding as well. here's futurecast. we have the clouds but no rain today and into this evening and into tomorrow. we could see a couple breaks in the clouds tomorrow looks like it's too warm for anything but rain. a few showers around on saturday. you don't see a whole lot on the radar here. as we go into sunday, yeah. there it is. more on that rain coming up later.

for the seven-day forecast, the fairly cloudy day tomorrow, a chance of a couple showers saturday. sunday is the rainy day, especially in the morning. so it's saturday night and sunday morning. the wettest period of the weekend. look how warm it is on sunday and then we get the cold blast on monday. a man is arrested for alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old relative. police say charles robinson carried out the abuse for several years, he was also involved in the boy scouts of america and investigators fear more victims may be out there. monique braxton is live in newtown square, delaware county, with an update on what happened in the courtroom. monique, fill us in. >> reporter: in the past hour, charles robinson waved his right to a preliminary hearing on most of the salt allegations. our camera was rolling when he

departed court. would you like to make a comment, mr. robinson? >> reporter: what do you want to say? >> reporter: do you plan to plead guilty? >> reporter: the 60-year-old robinson, a former volunteer with the boy scout, an active member of a mainline church, declined comment when departed district court. he pushed our microphones and cameras away breaking one camera. instead, his attorney offered the to waive the preliminary hearing if the charge of involuntary deviant sexual assault against a child less than 16 was dropped. now that meant the victim robinson is accused of assau assaultinassaul assaulting over a four year period would not have to testify but we were told she was here. the remaining seven felony and misdemeanor charges will stand. the district attorney is offering conditions of a plea agreement. one to two years in a county prison, five years probation and a lifetime on the sex registry.

connected to another painful illness. nbc's brittany glasser shows us why some kids are staying sick longer. >> reporter: viral infections are as common as the changing weather. this pediatrician says he's treated lots of patients with congestion and coughs and said most colds resolve on their own but sometimes you can develop an ear infection as a complication. >> when you have a cold you get swelling of the tissues of your sinuses and that swelling can basically block up the drain, block up the middle ear space and fluid can accumulate in the middle ear space. >> reporter: when the fluid sits, it can become infected. >> that infection causes some pressure and bulbing of the air drum which can lead to pain. dr. richard says if the ear pain is following a cold, it's probably an ear infection.

we continue to follow breaking news creating a mess for drivers in mercer county. skyforce 10 was over i-95 north near exit 7 and route 206 in lawrence township. this was around 10:00 this morning. it's about an hour and a half ago. you can see the problem truck that overturned while spilling scrap metal all over the highway. now take a live look now at 95 in lawrence township. this view a little bit sketchy here from our camera along 95 and route 31 but you can see the accident you can't see the accident but there's a little bit more of a backup there. again the problem is in the northbound lanes near i-95 near exit 7 and route 206. it's clearing out now. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 news app for breaking updates. meanwhile, police release new surveillance video in connection with the case of a 75-year-old woman who was shot on new year's

day. the victim was returning from buying groceries near frankford avenue in mayfair when a man in a car asked her to give up her handbag, she resisted and was shot in the face. she went home first and took herself to the hospital. fortunately the wound was not life threatening. her daughter wants to see the suspect caught. >> this is something that hopefully this guy is off the streets and it doesn't have to happen to anybody else. >> the victim's daughter says her mother is feisty and all things considered is doing well. a happy ending for 17 miners who became trapped in new york state. the miners were stuck for hours at a salt mine in lansing, new york. they were stuck for 10 hours 900 feet below ground. a crane was brought in to assist with freeing the miners. the trapped workers were given radios and other supplies including blankets. the mine manager says experience played a role in the successful

make a mess. the suspects crashed the pickup into a convenience store so they could try to steal a safe. in all, five men rushed in the store and tried to open the safe. they had no luck. macy's is slashing staff. the country's largest department store chain announced it's cutting nearly 5,000 jobs following a poor holiday shopping season. macy's plans that make up additional money by closing stores. they made that announcement in the fall. ardmore suburban square is one of the locations closing its stores. the department store will close in the spring. that announcement was made late last year. dozens of people will lose their jobs. this is one of 36 macy's stores being closed this year to cut costs. a montgomery county native is heading to the hall of fame. norristown's mike piazza learned he was elected to cooperstown. here's the moment he learned he would be enshrined.

the federal government has released its latest dietary

guidelines they update every five years. for the first time, the government suggests americans limit the amount of added sugar to 10% of daily calories. that's about 12 teaspoons for a typical 2,000 calorie diet. guidelines people cut back on salt and saturated fat but not necessarily cholesterol. experts say dietary cholesterol doesn't greatly influence blood cholesterol in most people. there's a common virus few of us know exists but when it affects pregnant women their baby may be at risk. one family know this is too well and is working to spare others from this tragedy. bow kn nbc's bonita zahn has the report. >> reporter: two and a half-year-old twins sofia and lincoln katz are active, inquisitive and happy. but there's a distinct difference with how hay communicate. lincoln speaks, sophie signs. >> sophie, what 's this? >> reporter: early in michelle katz' pregnancy, she was exposed to cmv virus, a common virus

affecting upwards of 80% of us by the time we're 40. generally there are no symptoms so you never realize you've been infected and once you've had it you can't catch it again. but when a pregnant woman contracts cmv for the first time it can pass on to the developing fetus with potentially devastating consequences. >> they're burn with torn with causing problems with their brain development around other nervous system problems. >> now lincoln escaped trouble but sophie's hearing was affected. she repeatedly failed her newborn hearing test. because the katz were living in utah, those failed tests required screening for cmv. it was a lucky break. sophie was diagnosed early and treated with anti-viral medication. >> if she hadn't been treated she almost certainly would have lost the rest of her hearing, potentially further cognitive
