shows the moments right before this 75-year-old woman was shot and robbed while walking down the street. now her daughter is calling on the, quote, cowardly shooter, to take responsibility. first, who needs millions when you could win a billion instead? experts think that's how high the next powerball jackpot could get, and now our hopes are even higher, too. nbc 10 news at 5:00 starts right now. good evening, i'm keith jones. it hasn't reached a billion dollars yet, but the powerball jackpot has gone up twice since last night's drawing. now stands at $700 million. that's already the largest jackpot in american history. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins us live in center city. randy, the next drawing isn't until saturday, but people are jumping at the chance to win this giant jackpot. >> yeah, that jackpot is only possible if enough people go before saturday to buy tickets or if it rolls over because no

one wins again. you can see some people already two or three days before the jackpot drawing picking their powerball tickets. right now the jackpot stands about $700 million. that's more than the gdp of a handful of countries, you could afford to buy a skyscraper and it's causing a lot of people to consider rolling the dice. take a listen. >> we didn't do the $500,000 one, but no that it's up to $700, we're going to do it. >> reporter: saying it's almost a billion dollars. >> still not going to do it, i have bad luck, there you go. >> reporter: you don't think you'd win? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: and to be clear, you probably won't win, absolutely no chance you're going to win this thing, odds are not in your favor, at least 1 in 295 million, one for every person living in the country, but the tease and excitement is getting a lot of people out here early. we saw long lines yesterday. this jackpot has been growing

since early november. if it rolls over again, you could see a billion dollar jackpot. that's never happened in u.s. history. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> thousands lining up just today, randy. we have a couple more days to go. my goodness. randy, thanks. breaking news right now in philadelphia's east falls section. sky force 10 live over an accident involving a number of different cars. the southbound lanes of the roosevelt boulevard extension at ridge avenue are closed because of that, traffic being rerouted on to the ridge avenue exit. we understand two people are hurt, two women being taken to the hospital, third victim on the scene still, they are all expected to be okay. we'll continue to monitor this situation, again, large traffic backup there in east falls on the roosevelt boulevard. right now at 5:00, look at this, broken glass and that's not all. a south jersey church out of thousands of dollars after someone left behind this path of destruction. nbc 10's cydney long is live at

our lady of guadalupe parish shrine. what happened here? >> reporter: well, keith, i can tell you the church does usually keep its sanctuary open all day for people to come in and out and pray, but it was before noon yesterday between 11:30 and noon, that someone went inside on a mission to desecrate much of the symbolism here, including stain glass windows that are nearly a century old. >> we're thankful nobody was in the church when whoever went in did this. >> reporter: shattered glass littered the altar and floor inside the parish wednesday when a vandal or vandals threw devotional candles, smashing stained glass windows. >> they are from europe and each window is a different statement of the creed of our catholic faith, so we use the windows to teach, and it was just so sad to see them destroyed. >> reporter: a papal flag was knocked down along with an easter candle on the altar. >> no money were taken, poor

boxes weren't bothered, but the crucifixes were knocked over on the floor. >> reporter: a parishioner says walking on the glass took her breath away. >> it's devastating. it's disgusting, but also it's very sad that someone would come in and destroy what we consider a second home. >> reporter: the windows are hand painted and some more than 100 years old, salvaged after a fire here decades ago before the new parish was built in 1958. damages could be into the thousands. >> it will be in the thousands of dollars, because a lot of the glass we don't even know if we can get anymore. >> reporter: his message to whoever is responsible? >> i would say to them, we're praying for you. >> reporter: he extended an invitation for them to come back. >> whatever's broken inside of you. >> reporter: and pray. >> it would be wonderful if you wanted to come back here, not do more damage, but to be helped.

>> reporter: and father told me he just contacted two surveillance camera companies last week to install the cameras both inside and outside the church. he said he just thought it was time, he says now is the time while they wait on an insurance adjuster to give them an estimate. until this is resolved, the church will only be open for mass and scheduled services. live, cydney long, nbc 10 news. now that it's starting to finally feel like winter, local ski resorts are breathing a sigh of relief. let's take a look at camelback ski resort, one of several in the poconos that opened today for the first time all season. nbc 10's doug shimell will join us live at camelback later this hour. he'll show us then how they'll plan to make up for all that lost business. before we get to that, get an update on your first alert weather from meteorologist sheena parveen. we'll look ahead to tonight first. >> temperatures are not going to be as cold tonight, but it is still going to be on the cold

side, below freezing for much of the area, but some spots will stay in about the mid 30s. right now in the mid 40s most of the area, so warmer than yesterday and this warming trend will keep continuing into the weekend. the temperatures now are dropping down. mount pocono sitting at 33 degrees, and nice weather for the snow on the ground. here's a live look up in the poconos, a lot of snowboarders out there really testing out the opening of a lot of the ski resorts, and this nice weather for the snow on the ground is going to continue tonight and tomorrow, but then when you have rain over the weekend, but don't be worried by that, because afterwards next week we are going to get colder for more snow to be made up there. tonight in the meantime, temperatures dropping down to around 40 degrees by 10:15 and keep going down into the 30s. by 7:00 tomorrow morning, around the mid 30s for the philadelphia area, so not as cold as we have been, but still cold when you wake up and walk outside. aside from that, rain down to the west and southwest for part of your weekend, so straight

ahead i'll show you the timing on this and how warm we'll get before we get cold again. that's coming up. >> sheena, thank you. right now at 5:00, philadelphia police hope new surveillance video will lead them to the robber who shot a grandmother in her face as she walked home from a grocery store on new year's eve. take a look. police say this is the car involved in that case. the suspect got away with a 75-year-old woman's cell phone, $400 from a paycheck she just cashed, and her purse. the woman put up a fight, but the robber shot her in the face. the woman's daughter has a message now for the robber and any potential witnesses. >> in broad daylight, this is something that hopefully this guy is off the streets and it doesn't have to happen to anybody else. of course, we're all naive, we don't think it's going to happen to us, so if anybody knows anything or recognizes the car, you know, i mean, this could happen to anybody in your family. >> the victim's daughter says

her mother is feisty and is recovering well, considering her injuries. right now if you want to gamble in new jersey you go down to atlantic city, but soon the casinos could get more competition right in their own backyard. nbc 10's ted greenberg joins us live from our jersey shore bureau in atlantic city. ted, lawmakers are debating a bill that would add casinos up north. >> well, keith, public hearings were held today in both the state senate and assembly on north jersey casinos. it is an issue that could shape the future of atlantic city and bring more changes to the resort, which has been suffering for years from competition outside new jersey. >> when i have vacations off, we come here. >> reporter: bob says north jersey casinos would be a lot closer to home rather than making the trip to atlantic city. >> it would be nice, it would be a stone's throw away from where i am as opposed to driving, you know, two hours or an hour and a half. >> reporter: he was in the

seaside resort on the same day public hearings were being held in the state legislature on rival plans that would ask voters if two casinos should be allowed in the northern part of the state, places like the meadowlands and jersey city. >> certainly try it, absolutely, we'll try it to see if we like it. >> i would go there, it would be more convenient. >> reporter: before voters can decide whether to change the state constitution that restricts gambling to atlantic city, lawmakers must agree on a single plan to put on the ballot. the senate and assembly have been unable to find common ground on certain issues, including the amount of tax revenue generated by north jersey casinos that should be sent back to atlantic city to help make up for expected losses from competition within the state's own borders. >> right now about 50% of atlantic city customers come from central and north jersey, as well as new york. >> reporter: a 1998 tourism study showed at that time 31% of

atlantic city visitors came from within new jersey, 23% from new york, and 25% from pennsylvania, but by 2013, while new jersey visitors increased and new york remained stable, pennsylvania visitors had fallen to 19%, a causality experts say of gaming halls becoming legal in that state. >> casinos in north jersey would devastate atlantic city. it would keep the people from coming to atlantic city who are currently coming. >> reporter: but some say while they might try north jersey casinos, they wouldn't abandon a.c. entirely. >> we like it here because of the water. we like the boardwalk. >> meantime, the assembly and senate are set to vote monday on their own version of the plan. at this point, there's no sign of a deal. live in our jersey shore bureau, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> ted, thanks. philadelphia schools received their annual progress reports today. the ratings cover all district

schools and 90% of charter schools. the event is one of 19 schools recognized for high achievement over the last school year. mayor jim kenney said while it's important to celebrate the schools doing well, the report shows a great need in some areas. >> hopefully, this will be a tool we can use in harrisburg to explain why we need the resources we need. children do flourish. >> the school district posted the full report on its website. a parents guide will be released in a few weeks. still ahead on nbc 10 news at 5:00, a group of middle schoolers are under investigation after police say they shared nude photos of their classmates. now police want to know where the photos came from. plus, a car crushed with someone still inside. the frantic rush to rescue that driver. that's next at 5:00. ♪

a man is getting treated at a new york hospital after dozens of firefighters somehow pulled him out of a crushed car. the video captures a rescue following a six-car pileup this morning. firefighters say from the looks of things and the looks of the wreck, they were shocked to find the guy alive and even able to stand up once rescuers pulled him from his mangled car. reporter john chandler has the story. >> reporter: three cars heaped

in a pile against the jersey barrier. >> you see a crash like this, usually fatality. >> reporter: it was a grim scene as they pulled up, chopper 4 was first on the scene showing a smaller car, the smallest, a red toyota crushed underneath. inside the driver pleaing to get out. >> when i look at this mangled car, i shook my head and said i can't believe this guy is alive and speaking. >> he wound up in the one part of the car that was not crushed. it's an area probably about three feet by three feet, i'd say, that's where his upper body was. he was lateral across the seat, legs underneath the dashboard. >> reporter: even worse, a bmw was pinned upright, dangerously dangling overhead. the third avenue express was in a race against time. in this situation, firefighters want to try and get the trapped person out within an hour. they had this man out in 45 minutes. >> this is the spreader, this is the cutter. >> reporter: firefighters used the spreader, cutter, and jaws of life to free the victim.

>> turned out to be a great ending. looked like we weren't going to have a good ending to this one. >> reporter: in brooklyn, john chandler, nbc 10 news. congress will consider a bill to strip bill cosby of the presidential medal of freedom. republican arizona congressman paul gosar formally announced today he'll file the bill tomorrow. cosby received the medal from george w. bush back in 2002. that's what this video is from. it is the highest civilian honor. now cosby's charged with assaulting a woman inside his montgomery county home back in 2004. cosby is free on $1 million bail. he maintains his innocence. >> revoking bill cosby's medal of freedom won't undo his actions, but it will signal to the american people that we will not tolerate such lewd behavior. >> any comment? >> yesterday the l.a. district attorney's office decided not to charge cosby in two other sexual

assault cases. eat less sugar, far less sugar. that's according to new guidelines from the federal government. nbc 10 national correspondent erika edwards has more about what the recommendations do and do not include.fl:n >> reporter: for the first time, the federal nutrition guidelines tell americans to limit their intake of added sugar to no more than 10% of daily calories. virtually no one can do that kind of dietary math, dr. natalie ai czar put it in terms of real food on the "today show." >> regular can of soda and the fun-sized candy bars, one can of soda and one of those, is the added amount that would be allowed. >> reporter: most experts agree people consume far too much sugar, which is linked to an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes. the guidelines also suggest cutting back on salt and saturated fat and increasing the amount of fruit, vegetables, and

whole grains in our diet. health and human services secretary suggests making small daily changes. >> when you think about it, whether it's the beverages you drink or maybe eating out one fewer night a week or perhaps how you think about adding some additional fruits or vegetables, these changes can get you to a place where there's healthier eating for you and your family. >> reporter: a committee previously said the guidelines should urge people to cut back on red and processed meat. the final version, however, does not include that advice. it suggests instead people start incorporating other forms of protein into their meals like nuts, seeds, and sea food. erika edwards, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, today we are about five degrees warmer than yesterday, so the milder air is continuing and it's going to keep staying milder into the weekend. so tomorrow little bit warmer than today.

over the weekend quite a bit milder, but that is going to come with some rain. temperatures in the 50s over the weekend, but the rain will also be here, too, so i'll show you when that moves in in just a second. after the weekend, colder air returning, so the rain not good for the ski resorts this weekend, but by next week the cold air moving in will be great once again for that snow to be made. here's a live look at blue mountain ski resort. a lot of skiers and snowboarders out there. all the snow on the ground they've made and temperatures have really been supporting that. temperatures dropping into the mid 30s, steady overnight tonight and even by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow when you walk outside, mid to low 30s through the area, so still kind of cold when you wake up, but not as cold as it was this morning. temperature trend keeps going up. today we got to the mid 40s, tomorrow upper 40s, and by saturday we could be in the mid 50s. the average high is 40 degrees, so that mild air is coming back, but not for very long this time. temperatures currently about the

mid to low 40s. 41 in allentown at the moment, but those numbers will be dropping overnight. clouds are still with us and we expect these to hang around the next few days, even over the weekend, then we're going to see the rain moving in. right now the rain is far away. our first shot at any rain wouldn't be until late tomorrow night, then over part of your weekend. here's future weather. tonight we stay dry, keep the clouds around. tomorrow a cloudy day and milder day, but pretty dry at 1:00 p.m. late tomorrow night, 10:00, 11:00 at night, showers approaching, nothing very heavy and for most of saturday at this point it just looks cloudy for most of the day, but milder air does get here with temperatures in the 50s. watch what happens late saturday night and into early sunday. that's when the real round of rain moves in, so by early sunday morning you will see the rain around when you wake up. some of this could be locally heavy, still a mild day, though, then by 2:00 p.m. we should start to see the rain move away so the later half of your sunday

should be nice and dry, just the morning hours we'll see the rain around. tonight, cloudy, not as cold, 44 philadelphia, 23 degrees areas north and west, so noticeably cold. tomorrow afternoon cloudy, temperatures around 46 to 49 degrees, so milder than today with those late rain showers late at night. so mostly once your day's over. saturday we'll see rain, not until late saturday night, but most of your saturday will be dry and cloudy, mid 50s. sunday we could be around 60 degrees, morning rain and look at the temperatures after that, 38 as we go into monday. by wednesday, low 30s and snow flurries possible. donald trump again today kept the focus on fellow republican presidential candidate ted cruz and whether his canadian birthplace takes him out of the running to be commander in chief. nbc 10 national correspondent steve handelsman has the latest from washington. >> reporter: donald trump's latest headline grab is giving away thousands of tickets for his rally tonight at a vermont

venue that holds just 1,400, but trump's attack on cruz is a bigger headline. trump tweeting, "ted, free legal advice on how to preempt the dems on citizen issue, go to court and seek declaratory judgment and you'll win." whether cruz, born in canada is eligible to be president, but a democratic congressman allen grayson of florida is saying he will sue if trump wins the nomination, that cruz's mother may have given up u.s. citizenship. >> democrats love to see controversy among republicans, so they are pouring gasoline on the fire hoping the entire house burns down. >> reporter: cruz in iowa today, where he is polling ahead of trump talked about his cuban-born father. >> he and my mom went on to start a small business together, so i grew up in texas. >> reporter: but cruz was born in canada, where his u.s.-born mom lived so long she qualified for canadian citizenship.

police looking for these two who stole a bunch of appliances and mattresses from a home in philadelphia's old kensington neighborhood. you see the suspects walking around and appearing later in a ford f-150 pickup truck. they load a washer and dryer, stove, and three twin mattresses into the truck, then drove off. if anyone recognizes them, call police. an auto body shop in montgomery county is looking to give away a newly restored vehicle to a deserving veteran. motor car makeovers received the anonymous donation of a gmc

this is nbc 10 news. >> tonight, middle schoolers in chester county are at the center of a sexting investigation. state police say the students were showing off nude cell phone pictures of their classmates. nbc 10's george spencer is live in coatesville. seems the cases involve younger and younger and younger students. >> reporter: yeah, indeed, keith. educators and police are really seeing that firsthand. in this case, state police only got involved after a parent spoke up, bringing their concerns about a student relationship to school administrators.

at collegium charter school, rigorous academics are the focus, but this week administrators and police are responding to allegations of students sharing nude photos of other students in the middle school. >> the situation was upsetting for us. it was upsetting for many. >> reporter: collegium's ceo says a parent came to the principal with a relationship concern about their child. the school brought in police and it was investigators who discovered claims that two students were showing off nude cell phone pictures of other students while at school. the school is using the incident as a chance to re-enforce internet safety teaching. >> unfortunately, our youngsters, earlier and earlier, are getting bombarded with media messages. some of which socially have been accepted as fine, however, when you're looking at adolescent

behaviors, grossly inappropriate for youngsters. >> reporter: over the summer nbc 10 told you about a separate incident at collegium, the arrest of a former teacher after she was allegedly caught in an intimate encounter with a student off campus. in this current incident, administrators are hoping to keep parents informed and encourage them to talk with their children about cell phone discretion. local police had already been investigating one of the middle schoolers involved in this case based on a previous tip, but up until yesterday nothing had happened at the school, and school administrators emphasize they notified the authorities as soon as something did. reporting live tonight in chester county, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> george, thanks. turn to breaking news now in philadelphia's east falls section. look at this, sky force 10 live over the scene of the accident, which is still causing a traffic mess tonight.

the southbound lanes of the roosevelt boulevard extension at ridge avenue are closed. that's what you're looking at there. traffic now being rerouted on to the ridge avenue exit. at least three people are hurt, but they are expected to be okay. we'll keep track of this and bring you new updates as soon as we get them. you can see the traffic backup it's causing now middle of rush hour about 5:33. police are looking for a group of guys who beat up another man, then stole his bike. it happened last month in south philly. you can see it here towards the top of your screen. a 51-year-old man riding his bike. as he tries to ride away, he's surrounded by a group of men who punch him several times in the face, then take his bike and run off. the man was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. a chilly day across our region, but warmer than it has been the last few days. nbc 10 at franklin square park. we saw this group of children taking a leisurely walk.

let's check in with sheena parveen. sheena, just the warmup and it's just getting started now, right? >> that's right, keith. we're going to keep getting warmer tomorrow, even warmer in the weekend, 50s this weekend, that is going to come with some rain, but the milder air is here. the average high for this time of year is 40 degrees and in many locations we're still in the mid 40s. mount pocono down to 43. 44 philadelphia, mid 40s most of south jersey and delaware, but here's where we'll be bottoming out. lows tonight will not be as cold as they have been the past couple of nights. allentown down to 24 degrees, philadelphia around the mid 30s tonight. areas like pottstown, reading, lancaster, 27 degrees, which is cold, but when you compare it to last night, it does not feel that cold relatively speaking to that. mid to low 30s for the rest of south jersey and delaware for tonight. right now we're dry, but rain on the way. it's far back off to the west and southwest. this will be moving in for part

of your weekend, along with the milder temperatures, but coming up i'll show you the timing on the rain and which part of your weekend to plan around it. that's straight ahead. this week president obama made his case for new gun control measures. he used examples like sandy hook and san bernardino, but for families in philly, gun violence can be seen on their streets every single day. nbc 10's lauren mayk spoke to one couple who lost their son last year. >> reporter: before that night at the club, alena garcia says 2015 started as a happy year. >> we were all doing well, he was about to graduate with honors. >> reporter: alex had gone back to school at temple. he was 34 years old when he was shot and killed here. >> i actually got the news while i was at work. the two detectives came to my job, i was teaching a class, and, you know, just fell to the floor. from that moment on, i've just been in shock the whole year. >> reporter: aleida garcia is

alex's parent, one family on a long list who lost loved ones in philadelphia last year. of the 280 people killed, 236 died from gunshots. a total of 1,243 people were shot in 2015. we talked to them on the street where it happened. alex rojas garcia lost his life, and theirs changed. >> i couldn't go to work because i was crying on the way in, crying on the way home, crying in the job. >> sometimes i think about what were his last thoughts when he died? >> reporter: sometimes he wonders -- >> what goes through a person's mind when you're ready to meet your creator? whole family and life in front of him? >> reporter: now almost a year later, the family is still learning to deal with the loss. >> i have young children, i have to explain it to them all the time what happened. i have a 9 year old and a 7 year old who constantly ask me about their big brother. >> reporter: what do you tell them? >> he's gone on to heaven, he'll meet us some day.

there's not a lot you can tell them. >> reporter: as we looked at what happened last year, we wondered how does philadelphia compare to other places. when it comes to shootings and shooting deaths, philadelphia had less than chicago, but more than new york city. in philadelphia, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. young people who lost their loved ones in the september 11th attacks are turning their grief into positivity now. about a dozen teens and young adults met in washington today for a conference on peace building and conflict resolution. the graduates of a program called project common bond and are now training to be peace leaders. the program works to help young victims of terrorism. it's something 22-year-old robbie of mercer county knows all too well. his father was killed in the attack on the pentagon on 9/11. >> i'm a very, very strong supporter of helping others to help yourself, and i think it's very important, and i think that me having the experience that i

china's economy. shares of china's main stock market fell so fast that trading had to be suspended for the second time this week. a montgomery county macy's store is one of 36 stores closing around the nation. the move also includes cutting close to 5,000 jobs. the macy's in ardmore will close its stores. macy's blames competition online and a warmer weather for a miserable holiday season. a staggering number of americans don't have enough savings to pay for an unexpected expense. 63% of americans wouldn't be able to afford an unforeseen cost, car repairs, emergency room visits, two big life events most of us don't plan for financially. an expense like new tires can cost upwards of $500 and for a trip to the hospital you could shell out an unexpected $1,000. well, we have another cold morning tomorrow, but not nearly

today roger clemens is firing back at roy halladay in a feud over the hall of fame. you might remember yesterday halladay sent out this tweet, "when you use performance enhancing drugs, you admit you're not good enough to compete fairly. our nation's pastime should have higher standards. no clemens, no bonds." today clemens sent a statement to a houston fox reporter reminding halladay of allegations brought up in his own career. clemens said, "just to enlighten him, he was accused of using

amphetamines by a strength coach." well, halladay responded to that statement on twitter this morning saying, "i'll let me reputation speak for itself." he'll be inducted on the hall of fame ballot in 2019. speaking of sports, philadelphia's new mayor spent a lot of his adult life in city politics, but jim kenney has been a sports fan for much longer than that and says his passion won't change even with his new title. vai sikahema spoke with mayor kenney about the impact of sports on his life and the city he grew up in. >> i love the eagles, i love them. >> reporter: like many philadelphians, jim kenney is passionate about the eagles. >> it's the one sport and probably the one game, one team, that really brings the entire region together. we see guys from north philly out there cooking and guys from delaware county, it's just really fun to watch.

for the houston texans next season, so congrats to him. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, temperatures won't be as cold through the area tonight, but you'll still want a jacket tomorrow morning, little milder, especially through the afternoon hours tomorrow, and especially as we go into the weekend, milder air is coming back. temperatures will be in the 50s over part of your weekend, but that is going to come with rain. even though it will be warming into the 50s, we have rain for part of the weekend, not the entire weekend, so i'll show you when in just a second. otherwise after the rain moves out of here next week, we get colder again with highs in the 30s. right now we're in the 30s in the poconos, 41 in pottstown, 42 westchester, 42 degrees in glassboro. mostly the mid to low 40s in south jersey and delaware right now. not as cold as it was yesterday. here's a live look up at blue mountain ski resort, and it's pretty nice here with all the snow on the ground and

temperatures have been cold enough to support that. here's your ski forecast for the poconos. tomorrow is going to be the best ski day. we do expect dry conditions and temperatures will be cold enough, but then we go into saturday, we get a little milder up in the poconos and a chance for some light rain. not very great, but really not good ski day is going to be sunday. that's the day where we do expect a good portion of heavy rain across the area, and, yes, it will be warm enough for rain. if you're really wanting to get out there, tomorrow is the best day and most of saturday, too. don't worry, because next week we will get colder. right now we are dry, we have the cloud cover around. that's going to hang around into the weekend, then it's going to come with rain you see off to the west and southwest. here's what's happening. tonight we have a big area of high pressure, we stay dry. not as cold with the wind direction, and even tomorrow through the afternoon, a milder end to the week. there you see the onshore wind, then more of a southerly wind into the weekend. that's going to come with some

rain, not until late saturday and early sunday we'll see the rain. clearing as we go into monday with much colder air and windy conditions moving in. here's a closer look at the rain timing. late friday night we could have showers moving in. that's not until about 11:00 p.m., so most of tomorrow will be dry. most of saturday will be dry with the exception of some very light showers and then we go into very early sunday. here's 8:00 a.m. sunday morning, mild temperatures and quite a bit of heavy rainfall. that's why we're saying it's not a good ski day up in the poconos, clearly with rain moving in, but again we get colder and dry out into next week. tonight, cloudy, not as cold, mid 30s in philadelphia, mid 20s areas north and west. tomorrow a cloudy day with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, so milder, too, then late showers friday night. for saturday, mid 50s, late rain, most of your saturday will be dry. for sunday, early in the day rain around, some of it heavy, highs around 60, but we cool down next week, low 30s by next

it's been a rough winter so far for ski resorts in the poconos. while we enjoyed the warm december weather, they had to deal with empty slopes. you know what, that all changed today. nbc 10's doug shimell is live at camelback ski resort. doug, they've got their work cut out for them. >> reporter: exactly. and even though they had the new water park to kind of bridge some revenue, six weeks of lost ski money is six weeks of lost ski money, but they think they

can make a lot of that back. mark hinkle refused to give up on winter. >> i just been trying to find some snow. i came here because it has the most trails. >> reporter: camelback mountain resort finally has snow. >> today it's all smiles, you know, not just from the guests, the staff, too. we're able to put people back to work and the skiers and borders are really happy on the hill. >> reporter: opening in early january is better than early february. >> we were hoping to come christmas break, but the weather was far too warm and they weren't making any snow here. >> reporter: the challenge for camelback was to keep the hundreds of seasonal and college workers from taking jobs elsewhere. >> our management has done a great job. they were able to retain just ability everybody we hired in november. we haven't lost that many people. everyone is really excited to get to work finally. >> reporter: the other goal to try and recapture the ski and snowboard vacation dollars that may have gone out west with no snow in the east. >> winter is still a big, big
