breaking news, a philadelphia police officer shot and wounded in the line of duty. >> he was absolutely ambushed. the video and obviously he said that but the video actually tells that story. >> you can see the officer's car riddled with bullet holes. the officer and the suspect are in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds. the suspect tried to execute the officer but somehow the officer was able to return fire. we have live team coverage. matt delucia is live at the scene in west philadelphia. katy zachry is live at the hospital in university city where both the officer and the suspect are treated. let's begin with matt. >> tracy, police know what happened, now they want to know why. i'm going to show you this is still an active scene.

right there is the police cruiser that the officer was driving at 60th and spruce, riddled with bullets. the police commissioner says it is amazing that officer is alive. take a closer look at the car. as i tell you what went down. 11:40 last night,p officer jesse hartnett was in uniform driving a marked car when a man started firing a gun into the driver's side window. he was able to get close enough at one point to get in the car with his gun and start shooting at the officer inside the vehicle. the police commissioner says at least 13 rounds were fired at the officer before he managed to get shots off at the suspect himself. other officers managed to catch the guy down the road and commissioner ross not a week into the job says this was an ambush. >> you look at the video, we have some video we captured, this is one of the scariest things i've seen. this guy tried to execute the police officer. the police officer had no idea he was coming.

it's amazing he's alive. >> reporter: we managed to get this video of the suspect's gun and clothe left on the street. police say he emptied the gun on the officer. back live still an active scene, 60th at spruce, still shut down. you third commissioner say there is video of this and right up there above that traffic light, that red light there is a camera, right above where this all happened. we spoke with mayor jim kenney about this. he rushed over when the shooting happened. i'll have more on that at 4:30. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> officer shot. repeating in the 18th district, officer on proos we have an officer down. >> that's from philadelphia police radio as the ambush went down. officer jesse hartnett was shot at least three times. nbc 10's katy zachry is live at presbyterian hospital where the wounded officer is being

treated. >> reporter: tracy, when the officer was shot it's about 10 minutes from presbyterian hospital. he was rushed here and quickly taken into surgery. the officer's family rushed to the hospital as well. officer heartsnet with the 18th district, his officers and supervisors met here. commissioner richard ross went inside to see him. he tells us officer heartnet was shot three times in the arm, one arm is broken and he has significant nerve damage. >> fortunately he's awake, he was coherent, okay, but he's now up in surgery, he's got a lot of recovery ahead of him. so i mean, this speaks to the dangers of this job and why somebody would do something i mean, so absolutely evil is just beyond us. >> reporter: philadelphia mayor jim kenney was also here in the waiting room with some of the injured officer's family members and he relayed to us part of the conversation he had with the

fell on a thrift store at 22nd and market. six people were killed, more than a dozen hurt. a subcontractor hire bid campbell pleaded guilty. shawn benschop is awaiting sentencing. china's stock market appears to be rebounding from yesterday's halt. it swung wildly before ending up 2%. twice this week trading was suspended after a plunge tripped a circuit breaker. regulators suspended the use of that after economists warn it could be adding to the volatility. the rebound in china is easing some pressure on the global markets. stock prices in japan end dound .4% but there were gains earlier in the day after china started to make a recovery. the u.s. stock market is having the worst start to a year ever, plunging again yesterday because of the halt on china's trading. investors in the area are worried how this will affect their savings and retirement

people to the hospital and caused massive backups. >> how long did you sfwhat. >> two hours. >> an hour and 40 minutes. i cannot believe that it took this long. i've never seen the bridge closed. it must be a horrendous accident. >> the suspect's family say they don't know why he was driving the wrong way or tried to get away. he leaves behind a young daughter. >> philadelphia police hope this surveillance video leads them to a robber who shot a grandmother in the face in mayfair on new year's eve day. investigators say the man was driving this car, he got away with a 75-year-old's cell phone, 400 ds $400 from a paycheck and her purse. >> two new jersey state troopers helped deliver a baby on the side of the garden state parkway all caught on their dash cam. look at this. >> one, two, three. push. >> the expectant mother was on the way to the hospital on monday when she realized she wasn't going to make it.

troopers alex and arnoldo showed up and helped deliver the baby and cut the umbilical cord. this is the third time in the last three months troopers helped in road side deliveries. eight minutes after 4:00. and it is not as cold this morning. check out the clouds over the area. these clouds stuck around from yesterday. and are helping to keep temperatures warmer this morning. above freezing. and no wind. it is calm this morning. the temperatures above freezing for doylestown, pottstown at 35, 38 in wilmington and look, temperatures near 40 degrees right now in millville and atlantic city. what a difference from earlier in the week. it's 40 degrees in philadelphia at the airport, but roxborough, south philadelphia, northeast philadelphia all within a degree. 36, 37 to start with. and will be warming up. but with clouds around, we won't see a huge warm-up today. but it will stay above freezing

and later found dead in a lehigh valley canal. he had run away from the party. the public is invited to celebrate the life of jaleel this afternoon in allentown. >> a search is under way to find the cause of an explosion at a dow chemical plant in northern massachusetts. four people with shrapnel and burn injuries are listed in critical condition. it happened in north andover. it appears that a chemical reacting to water likely triggered the blast. dow chemical says there are no risks to the community near the site. dow is merging with dupont to create a giant chemical producer, that means dupont is cutting 1700 local jobs. employees in delaware started getting pink slips this week. the cuts impact 10 locations in delaware including dupont's headquarters. >> new jersey lawmakers will decide next week whether to increase the legal age to buy cigarettes to 21. the vote is scheduled on monday and if the it passes it wold

you can advil a nova to the schools banning hover boards. they are banned from residence halls. cane university was one of the first schools to say no to the toy, at least 20 others have banned them. >> from our jersey shore bureau, a bill could eliminate restrictions on how atlantic city's former showboat casino can be used. the bill advanced by an assembly

committee yesterday would prohibit any deed restrictions on the building in the city's tourism district. the showboat closed in 2014. one restriction prevents it open as a casino, another for being used for anything other than a casino. lawmakers are also deciding on a referendum that could take gamblers away from atlantic city. hearings were held on two plans for building casinos in north jersey. the state constitution restricts gambling to atlantic city. voters will decide whether to change that but first lawmakers have to agree on a single plan to put on the ballot. it's 4:24. help for atlantic city's casinos is up to governor christie. yesterday new jersey senators approved an aid package for the eight casinos, it would allow them to make set payments for 15 years instead of paying taxes where the amount can change. the governor vetoed a similar bill two months ago.

new jersey students could spend more time in class. lawmakers introduced a bill to help underperforming schooling angd lengthen the school day. any district whose students don't show pro5cy on the language arts exams would add 2 1/2 hours to the school days. >> longer days to getting a break, members of the new jersey state senate passed a measure that guarantees 20 minutes of recess for students in k-5. those in favor say the break from class work allows younger students to develop and cultivate social skills. >> the number of students graduating from camden schools is increasing. the school superintendent and alumni celebrated the news yesterday. 64% of camden high school seniors will graduate this spring which is up from only 49% three years ago. >> according to a new report if the you want to lose weight you need to cut way back on the sugar. the new guidelines recommend americans limit the amount of
