dispatcher. listen. >> shots fire! i'm shot! i'm bleeding heavily! >> today the police commissioner commended the officer's actions. >> the bravery he demonstrated was absolutely remarkable. his will to live undoubtedly saved his life. >> police have identified the suspected gunman as edward archer. archer was wounded, as well, and tonight we're learning more about his background, the weapon police say he used, and his allege allegiance to isis. we have team coverage of this still breaking story tonight. nbc 10's george spencer and lauren mayk are working the story for us. we begin with george who's looking into how this all unfolded this morning. george? >> reporter: jim, archer was a man known by some on these west philadelphia streets, sometimes staying in this house behind me, other times staying with family just about a block and a half away from here. investigators tell us this ambush is so troubling not only
6:01 pm
because of archer's explanation for it, but also because a stolen police gun was used to commit it. in the dark of night you can watch the attempted assassination unfold. the suspect in the long white robe rushes towards the patrol car with gun pointed, saying nothing, popping off shots right through the driver's side window. as a few astonished witnesses watched. >> the way he shot close up, that cop should be dead, but he wasn't. >> if that doesn't just make the hairs on your neck raise when you see that, it's scary. that's all i can say. >> reporter: police commissioner richard ross, just four days in his new role, says he can barely believe the officer, 33-year-old jesse hartnett, survived these bullet holes that pierced his patrol car. the suspect's gun left laying on the ground. today we confirmed that gun was reported stolen from another philly cop's home two years ago. it nearly killed one of their own last night. >> we know it was stolen, how

6:05 pm
police officer, he got his wish. >> reporter: they are proud, but shaken. what has the past 24 hours been like for you? >> like a nightmare. >> reporter: the one with the police sign outside to be with his police officer son. >> getting back together, getting him up and going and he's going to be back out doing what he loves to do. >> reporter: officer hartnett does first, though, have quite a bit of recovery ahead of him as george spencer mentioned, he was wearing a bullet proof vest, but he was shot three times in the arm, he did lose quite a bit of blood. both family and colleagues grateful tonight that he is here. live in powelton village, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> now to the suspect, 30-year-old edward archer, looking into his prior record shows he's no stranger to law enforcement, having arrests for aggravated assault, firearms offenses, and making terroristic threats. fbi agents spent hours at two of his known addresses today. they walked out of this house in
6:06 pm
west philadelphia with boxes and bags of evidence. they also searched a home in delaware county. >> he has been on our radar screen and i believe he was scheduled to be in our county court next week for another incident. >> because archer allegedly told police he shot the officer in the name of islam, law enforcement continues to investigate whether he acted alone or if he was part of a larger network connected to terrorism. our coverage continues on nbc10.com. you'll find the surveillance video of the ambush, along with those radio calls made by the wounded officer. turning to our weather now, nbc 10's chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us now. talking a warmup and also heavy rain at times. >> it's not going to be a total washout, but there is going to be some rain and we may also see record warmth. cloudy skies, very little wind
