which was caught on chilling surveillance video you see here. a suspect who said he shot the officer in the name of islam is now charged. >> good evening, i'm denise nakano, edward archer was arraigned on charges that included attempted murder for thursday night's shooting of jesse hartnett. archer was officially charged, cameras were not allowed in the courtroom. he was arraigned on a total of eight charges, including four felonies. a judge did not grant bail and archer's due back in court january 25th for a preliminary hearing. nbc10 just talked to edward archer's grandfather who did not want to be on camera, he tells us he was not aware his grandson had any mental issues. archer was raised baptist, but converted to islam several years ago, he went to mecca for a year or two, and when he came back, he was a changed person.

we have team coverage on the impact of this ambush, both for police and the muslim community. we begin with george spencer, live at penn presbyterian hospital. george, you spoke to some of his friends about how he's doing? >> yes. denise, friends of officer hartnett say the gravity of what happened is beginning to sink in for him. he will remain in this hospital for much of next week. a 33-year-old officer tonight, the latest symbol of difficult times for police nationwide. on this feltonville basketball court today, philly kids played in a tournament honoring police. it comes i day after jesse hartnett nearly became the newest name on the list. nearly assassinated on a street corner in west philly thursday night. >> they put their life on the line every day. and though they don't know who

the bad people was, but the bad people know who they are. >> we're nervous now, you know, we don't know what's going to happen. >> captain mccluskey acknowledged uneasiness today. the ambush came three days after richard ross jr. was swrorn in as police commissioner. and almost foreshadowed the danger ahead. >> it is a challenging time for law enforcement. i don't think anyone can deny that. >> the temperature's high out there, i think we have to be very careful. >> john mcnesby says officers patrolling in pairs has helped calm some fears. and soon under the new commissioner, the red and blue lights always on atop patrol cars will go dark again. the attack on hartnett proves simply being a cop makes you a target. >> it's not because jesse was white, black, he was wearing a uniform, a badge and driving a

philadelphia police car, it's as simm. as that. >> back in feltonville, they honored the first female officer killed in the line of duty. >> our prayers go out to all the officers out there today, to make sure that they are safe and sound and they go home at the end of their tour. >> philadelphia police say officially officer hartnett remains in critical but stable condition. the three gunshot wounds he suffered to his left arm apparently left nerve damage that will require further surgeries next week. reporting live tonight at penn presbyterian hospital, george spencer, nbc10 news. >> people across the area are showing support for officer hartnett, friends set up a go fund me page. they say the money will be used to help kwover any of the officers additional expenses during that time. and we have a link to that site

on nbc10.com and on the nbc10 news app. many members of the muslim community are concerned that the officer's ambush could spark more backlash. drew smith is live at the islamic academy in north philadelphia. people came together to show their support by creating a new mural today. you spoke to those about attending their reaction to the ambu ambush. >> a lot of the members of the mosque felt they should not have to make excuses or apologize. people in their view have nothing to do with the peaceful religion of islam. they once again feel people are making unfair assumptions about them. >> members of city council were in the room, and the mayor defended the comments he made yesterday after taking some criticism from some political commentators. kenny insists the ambush of a philadelphia officer had nothing to do with islam.

>> that act of that terrible man in almost assassinating our police officer, was an individual act of criminality. it was not an act of religion. >> it's frustrating for us, every time there's an incident on the news, we feel the backlash. >> the event was scheduled long before the shooting this week, the mural will go up here on the mosque in the near future. they're calling it windows on peace, and this was all after someone desecrated this mosque late last year, someone threw a pig's head at it. live in north philadelphia, drew smith, nbc10 news. >> stay with us for the continuing coverage of the ambush. whenever news breaks, you'll be the first to get alerts on our nbc10 news app. a worker who fell 18 feet down a hole in old city and trapped there for hours with a boulder on top of him is now in the hospital. any word on his condition tonight?

>> reporter: well, denise, this rescue was pretty incredible to watch. this worker is alive, he was conscious and talking, taken to hospital. he was working underground on market street when he fell or was stuck 20 feet down in a large hole. his feet and his leg were pinned by a large boulder, let me show you the video right now of him finally getting rescued after hours. firefighters were able to repell down and carefully remove those large rocks. this operation involved dozens of first responders as huge crowds watched and worried. authorities had to shut down a september that line on market street, because the vibrations underground were causing problems. the trickiest part of the whole thing was removing the large rocks which they didn't want to shift underneath the busy street. >> boulders that were trapping the man's foot. and we had to shore that up, so our special operations teams

were able to shore that up, free his foot out, and to bring the gentleman out of the ditch. >> back here live on market and fourth, you can see part of market street remains shut down, as they continue to clear the scene. that should reopen in the next few minutes. the worker is employed by city plumbing, he was working underground installing a new sewage line. we're waiting to hear back as investigators try to figure out how he got stuck underground. live in old city, randy gyllenhaal nbc10 news. right now, nbc10 first alert weather radar is tracking rain heading our way, it's going to affect your seasoned morning plans. for more on this, let's check in with brittney shipp. >> we're gearing up for heavy rain as we start off your sunday morning. here's a system, we're going to see warmer air moving up as well. it's going to be warmer tomorrow, we'll head into the 60s, all this heavy rain will move in from the west.

you notice first the rain moves up from the south. if you have late plans tonight, it will be nice and dry. if you're staying out past midnight, you'll start to see the rain moving in. you'll start to see the heavier rain pushing through. maybe you're going to church or brunch at exercise. we'll see heavier pockets. we could see a few isolated thunderstorms. one thing you'll notice as we head into your late morning hours, right around 9:00 a.m., you'll notice most of that heavy rain will be off to the east of us. this is going to be a morning event. this is what we're tracking for you heading into sunday. a half inch to an inch of heavy rain, street flooding is going to be a possibility. isolated thunderstorms possible, and one gust up to 40 miles per hour. we have a coastal flood advisory. and we're tracking arctic blasts of air. i'll go over the details, we have a lot happening with our weather. >> do you have your ticket yet? powerball mania is in full force tonight.

a united airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in vancouver, after a passenger left a threatening note. the flight from anchorage alaska was headed to denver with 137 people on board, but midway through that flight the crew chose to turn back to vancouver after finding the message. it's not known what it said. a suspect is in custody. i'm tracking a warmer sunday for you. heavy rain to start off your sunday. i'll let you know how long it's going to stick around. an arctic blast in the

the man accused of ambushing a philadelphia police officer has been charged with attempted murder. edward archer was arraigned today on a total of eight charges. authorities say archer fired at least 13 shots at jesse hartnett late thursday night. he was hit three times in the arm and will require multiple surgeries. he's expected to recover. there's been an outpouring of support for officer hartnett. this afternoon philadelphia district attorney seth williams tweeted, i salute officer hartnett for his bravery, valor. count on nbc10 to bring you updates on this story as it develops. now to fire safety and with colder days ahead. the american red cross is

reminding everyone to be careful while using space heaters and fireplaces to keep warm. nbc10 in north philadelphia this afternoon, they went door to door to check smoke alarms. anyone who needed a smoke alarm got one for free. the red cross says leaving space heaters and fireplaces unattended is the second leading cause of home fire deaths. they usually happen in the early morning hours while everyone is sleeping. >> early yesterday morning, elizabeth perez, her 2-year-old son and her unborn baby girl died when their house caught fire on north fourth street. up to five space heaters were being improperly used inside the home. having a working sprinkler system could mean the difference between life and death. >> we know having the number of fatalities, people are going to have fires, they don't have to die in fires.

>> leave a lot of space in the area around those space heaters and turn them off or even unplug them whenever you leave the room. philadelphia police hope you can help find this missing teenaged girl. her name is zaria montgomery, she disappeared late tuesday night, and she was last scene at her home on north 22nd street in north philadelphia. investigators believe she could now be in the area of 25th and indiana. if you have any information contact police. ask yourself, are you feeling lucky? in a little more than 4 1/2 hours, someone could be $900 million richer, that's how much tonight's record powerball jackpot is now worth. the jackpot isn't the only thing soaring, though, ticket sales are as well. no one won the $500 million jackpot wednesday. about 75% of all possible numbers will be sold tonight, so

associated with all that rain, it's going to warm up tomorrow into the 60s, that's going to be brief. by monday, we're tracking one of two arctic blasts that will move in. here's a closer look at our radar shot, you can see some of the rain is starting to develop here, we're going to see some of these showers move up from the south, and then this heavier system, the area of low pressure is what's going to bring our heavier rain. we'll start to see that moving through into tonight. by 2:00 a.m., we're going to start to see some of the light rain moving into the west. the heavier rain will get here closer to 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. probably as you're waking up, heading out for your sunday plans. make sure you have your umbrella. later on, you won't need it. we'll see rain pushing off to the northeast, and a few isolated scattered showers will remain on and off throughout the rest of sunday. the heaviest rain moves through in the morning. that's when we have the coastal

flood advisory that will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. to noon on sunday. high tide typically occurs tomorrow morning between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. heads up, those streets that normally flood could flood with all this heavy rain that's going to move through. we're expecting anywhere from half an inch to an inch and a half of rain. isolated thunderstorm, and then wind gusts between 40 and 45 miles per hour. our temperatures today, still above average, 50 degrees in philadelphia. warmer than what we saw yesterday, 51 in atlantic city. we're up about 7 dwrees in philadelphia, up 9 degrees in atlantic city, take a look at the changes on the way. it will be mild briefly tomorrow. by monday, we're tracking our first arctic blast, our second one gets here on wednesday. expect chilly conditions as we head into next week. our highs around the region tomorrow, in the 60s, 64 degrees for philadelphia, 58 in

pottstown, 59 in allentown. it's going to be warm and rainy throughout your sunday morning. the arctic blast moves in as we get into sunday night. temperatures drop into the 30s, you wake up on monday morning as you head to work, to temperatures in the low 30s. the arctic blast moves in quickly. we'll drop down to 49 degrees. 46 for the suburbs north and west. a 30 degree drop between sunday and monday, back to the 40s we go on tuesday, second arctic blast gets here on wednesday. >> coming up, the eagles coaching search loses a candidate, and the birds will interview a possible hall of famer. flyers go for a record five straight wins at home. that is next.
