right now on nbc 10 news at 11:00, an nbc 10 investigative exclusive. a local man claims the idea behind one of the best tv drama nominees was his idea. >> the story couldn't justify stealing my material and putting his name on it. >> reporter: we ask lee daniels what he thinks of the allegations against him. first the threat is not over for philadelphia police. the department is investigating an anonymous tip suggesting the attempted assassination of an officer is linked to a larger

group of radical people. i'm denise nakano. it's a story we broke on the nbc 10 news app today. the fbi is involved trying to verify the claims of an anonymous tipster. the tip says archer is connected to a radical group. he is charged with attempted murder and the tipster says three other more radical men are still free in philadelphia. drew smith explains how police are reacting to this. >> reporter: philadelphia police told the officers about this tip and other agencies. they are cautioning everyone to be cautious. as an added step, nempb the patrol cars will ride with a partner. police say the unprovoked ambush of one of their own continues to weigh on them. >> tough week for us in this building. >> reporter: edward archer is charged with attempted murder. he confessed to doing it to islam and pledged allegiance to the islamic state. an anonymous woman claims the threat is not over.

we have a copy of the report where she told an officer the defendant is not the most radical of the four and she said three other men still frequent the 6100 block of pine and for police to be careful. >> it is a climate we're concerned about but at this point we are trying to be as cautious as possible. >> reporter: the tipster gave specific information about the mosque that archer had gone to. at a location not far from a home where archer stayed, people walking in to pray said they did not know him and declined to comment. at another mosque, also mentioned in the tip, an administrator spoke to us. >> me personally did not know him. >> reporter: the mosque is open to the public. anyone can come in but members say that any claim that archer was possibly radicalized inside of here is not true because they preach against extremism. >> it is easy point the finger of blame or throw an accusation around. it is a different story when you come in and listen to our sermons and lessons.

>> reporter: the police department says it takes tips like these seriously and plan to reenter view the woman that made those statements. drew smith, nbc 10 news. another frightening encounter involving a philadelphia police officer. it is hard to see in this video but police say this video shows a man trying to take an officer's gun. investigators say the man approached the officer and asked for money. the officer gave him $5 and then the man turned and tried to take his gun. police say the man told officers he was going to use it to rob a chinese restaurant. police sent a statement saying this incident was in no way related to the shooting of officer hartnett. this is an example of the type of individuals our officers face daily when performing our duties as philadelphia police officers. all new tonight, an nbc 10 investigate i have exclusive,

philadelphia native lee daniels known as the cocreator of the tv series "empire" sued in a federal lawsuit late friday. it comes two months after the nbc 10 investigators first told you about a local man's claims daniel stole his idea. investigative reporter harry harrison has this latest development. >> reporter: this is the suit filed hours ago. we sat down with him and his attorney. >> what story could he tell to possibly justify stealing my material and putting hi name on it. >> reporter: it accuses lee daniels and others of copy right ininn fringement and clayton said he met privately with daniels in 2008 at a greater philly office event. prince claims that's when he gave daniels the script and dvd of his show "cream." mary beth is his attorney. >> you do a comparison and do so

between "cream" and empire. it is strikingly similar to "cream." >> we with first aired the story in november. he showed us the comparisons between the shows such as characters and story line. >> i should own half of your country. >> i want half of my company back. >> reporter: last month we caught up with daniels at a function in philadelphia and asked about prince's allegations. >> he claims he came up with the idea for "empire." anything you can tell me about that? empire premiered last january. prince tells us for the past year he's been looking forward to his day in court. >> i really want my children and my friends and associates to all know that i'm the person that wrote the number one show. not lee daniels. >> reporter: we reached out this weekend for comment from the other people and companies named in the lawsuit. no one returned our calls or

philadelphia than this time yesterday. 11 colder in atlantic city. there's the mild air and the green over philadelphia. look at what happens as soon as tomorrow. we have arctic air over us. that's one of two arctic blasts that will keep our temperatures below average as we head in to next week. we are going to recover back to the 40s toward the end of the week. as we get through tonight, strong wind speeds gusting to 37 miles an hour in philadelphia. 32 poconos. the wind speeds stay strong as we go to the rest of tonight. as you commute tomorrow morning and as we go to the afternoon, we have another cold front moving through bringing us cold, arctic air and you will feel the difference tomorrow. we are clear on radar. done with the showers that move through and the next thing we are tracking is the possibility of a wintry mix as we move in to tuesday. some early models suggest we could see a little light snow accumulation for the poconos and

for the lehigh valley we will have to watch closely. the temperatures will be cold but by tuesday we recover to the 40s. might might be too warm to support snow but watch for a wintry mix tuesday and tuesday evening. >> closer look at our temperatures. we are tracking the two arctic blasts. the first tomorrow morning. by 6:00 a.m., look at these temperatures, 30 in philadelphia, 27 allentown. 20 in the poconos. even as you head to lunch, temperatures are in the mid and even the low 30s for daytime highs. as we head to tuesday morning, another cold start. you will notice the temperatures will start to recover. warmer air from the south. that means the temperatures in the 40s on tuesday and then we stay in the 40s the rest of the week. as far as tonight is concerned much colder than yesterday. temperatures drop to 28 for philadelphia. 26 for suburbs to the north and west. in to tomorrow, very cold but it will be sunny. our temperatures will range between 33 and 37 degree s.

♪ >> nbc 10 news starts now. right now, philadelphia officers are patroling in pairs rather than being alone. that switch was made for their safety. immediately after thursday's ambush of officer jesse hartnett. we're told this is not a permanent move by a safety measure until things calm down. it comes as police investigate a tip that the man charged in the shooting of officer hartnett is part of a group and the threat is not over. police say they haven't verified the claims brought by an anonymous woman but are taking them seriously. nbc 10 obtained a copy of that report. it details what the woman told police that officers should be cautious. it goes on to say the man in

custody was not the most radical of a group of four men. the police department notified all officers and is making other changes. we spoke to lieutenant john walker about his reaction to tension in the department. >> it's a climate we're concerned about. at this point, we are trying to be as cautious as possible with officers. >> reporter: the fbi is assisting in the investigation on this tip. well, there are moments when we are at our most vulnerable. a loved one passes and we want to honor their memory. the nbc 10 investigators continue to hear complaints about a local monument company prolonging the grieving process. investigative reporter harry hairston is here with the latest issues. this problem extends past the d de valley. >> each time we report on problems more customers come forward. we are hearing from companies that say the owner owes them

money as monuments sit in a warehouse. these are some of the monuments ordered by life stones by stephane. sitting 600 miles away. >> we probably had nine stones at last count. >> reporter: he owns plant memorial in georgia. he said he is owed $10,000 for making these and other stones. >> once you make a stone it costs more money to remake it than it does than it does to throw it away. >> we have problems with the checks not clearing the bank. >> reporter: john campbell of dixie granite says greg stephane, the owner of life stones owes his georgia company money, too. >> he still owes me, with interest, about 8,000, a little over $8,000. >> both monument makers reached out to the nbc 10 investigators after we exposed the head stone dealer not delivering orders to families in pennsylvania and new jersey. they say stefan stiffed them on

orders but they are more frustrated to what happened to families waiting on memorials. >> they are going to people at a very vulnerable time and in their life, when they have a death in their family, and easy to get sucked in at that time. >> we wanted to honor him with something special. >> reporter: bernadette and her family paid to have their father's stone placed months ago. they paid more and waited longer to have the logo on the memorial. a year later, they are still waiting. >> it seems to me everybody is doing their part. the consumer is paying their money. the manufacturers are making the product. everybody is doing what they should be doing except for this company. it's not right. >> reporter: for weeks, we tried to track down greg s is tefan at his office, his home. and by phone. >> he's a crook. there's no way around it. he knows what he is doing.

as we go in to the afternoon because it will be so windy along with that arctic air over us by 4:00 p.m. it will feel like 25 degrees. the actual temperature will get a little closer to 37. i'm tracking the first arctic blast on monday. the second moves in on wednesday. temperatures will get even colder. i will let you know how cold coming up in my seven-day forecast. >> new information about the recaptured mexican drug lord known as el chapo. tonight mexico officially began extraditi extradition proceedings that could bring him here to the u.s. to face charges. and authorities want to talk to sean penn about hi interview with el chapo published in rolling stone magazine. gabe gutierrez reports from mexico. >> reporter: tonight, a mexican law enforcement official tells nbc 10 news that mexican authorities want to speak to sean penn and mexican soap opera star about their secret trip to

meet el chapo. it is believed to be his first interview in decades. the article published by rolling stone magazine overnight. guzman only agreed to take the questions after a previous seven-hour face-to-face meeting days before a failed october raid. according to penn, this picture authenticates the meeting. penn quotes el chapo as saying i supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. on friday, the attorney general said guzman's desire to make a movie about himself and his interaction with producers and actors eventually led to his arrest. >> i think the mexican authorities want to identify as many people closely associated with el chapo as they can. >> reporter: trusted source tells nbc 10 news authorities were aware that penn and castillo were in mexico to meet with guzman in october as law enforcement was closing in. a planned arrest was delayed to ensure the two with would not be

harmed. when the raid eventually took place, el chapo and his security team escaped. we reached out to penn and castillo, neither commented. this isn't the first time that penn dabbled in journalism. he had previously written articles for the nation and the "san francisco chronicle." this time rolling stone said they agreed to let the subject approve the final version before publication. the magazine says el chapo made no changes. gabe gutierrez, nbc 10 news, mexico. police in new york city are interviewing two persons of interest in connection with a gang rape of a teenager in a brooklyn park. police released this surveillance video of the suspects entering a bow deg bow. she was held at gun point and raped by five men. the teen's father ran for help and returned with two police officers. the suspects took off and now
