legendary singer david bowie is dead. we'll look back at his five decades of work. officers on alert. the fbi and philadelphia police are investigating a tip that suggests that the man seen here shooting a police officer is part of a larger radical group. hold on to your hat. nbc 10 cameras this morning show a cold and windy scene with some gusts around 30 miles per hour. it is 4:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast, talk about the temperature turnaround. >> what a change, yesterday in the 60s, this morning the temperatures feel like the 20s and falling rapidly. 33 in philadelphia, just below freezing in wilmington. look at the 20s in reading and

lancaster. it's going to be a cold start and cold windy day. the wind chill 16 in reading, 21 in northeast philadelphia, wilmington 22. a cold start. bundle up. you need sunglasses, we'll see bright sunshine. look at the temperatures going nowhere. coming down at 6:00, by 9:00 with the wind out of the west at 13 miles per hour, 31 degrees. recovering some but only in the middle 30s this afternoon. sunny and winds out of the west at 17 miles an hour at lunch time. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood to show you how much warm-up when i'm back. right now jessica boyington is following your first alert traffic. >> that's right. we're on the vine street expressway we're open, so no construction right now. if you're heading out the door you're good to go there east and westbound all open to traffic this morning. typically we have construction until 5:00 in the morning blocking it off between the schuylkill and broad street. now it's not. ramp closures on 95, no increase

in the drive times now, you can see we're in the green but 95 northbound around girard and southbound around aramingo avenue are problem spot withes. that's ongoing so something we planned into our commute. here is 295 in new jersey in hamilton around sloan avenue. no problems in either direction, so if you have to get to new jersey transit station out in hamilton you'll be good to go. >> breaking news in the music world. >> this is nbc 10 breaking news. >> singer david bowie died after an 18-month battle with cancer, he died surrounded by friends and family. no more details were given. his career spanned five decades with hits like fame, heroes and let's dance. david cameron tweeted his death is a huge loss calling him a master of reinvention of it he leaves his wife of 25 years. he was just 69 years old. >> this just in to the newsroom

crews battling a fire at a strip mall in bucks county, the fire broke out in the kitchen of the hong kong buffet. there was damage to david's bridle next door. no one was hurt. it's 4:03. 33 degrees. philadelphia police officers are on alert. days after the attempted killing of one of their own comes word that the man charged in the shooting may be part of a larger group. the fbi is investigating a tip, it's a story we first broke yesterday. and matt delucia is live at police headquarters with more. what do we know? >> reporter: anonymous tips suggest that the threat is not over and that police should be careful and the top brass here are taking this tip seriously. shortly after the shooting and ambush of officer hartnett a woman approached an officer and said that the man who shot him is part after group of four and he is not the most radical of

them. edward archer is the guy who ambushed officer hartnett thursday night shooting him several times. officer hartnett is still in the hospital, archer is under arrest and the tipster says that the three other men still frequent the 6100 block of pine and warn police to be careful. the woman claims that the suspect became radicalized at a mosque near 45th and wal nuxt members at the mosque told us that they preach against extremism. coming up we're talking with police about the climate environment in which they are working in now especially in light of these events. officers have been assigned to work in pairs for now. live at philadelphia police headquarters, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >> to a developing story mexico is working to extradite drug lord ep chapo guzman to the united states. mexican police recaptured guzman on friday six months after he broke out of prison. they notified el chapo he was

wanted for drug crimes in the u.s. actor sean penn said he and a mexican actress met with guzman last year. an article described the meeting with penn quoting el chapo about trafficking in drugs. >> the mexican authorities want to identify as many people closely associated with el chapo as they can. >> reports say the el chapo case is not the first time that sean penn has tried his hand at journalism. some are calling for penn and the actress to face charges. there will be a live report on the "today" show later this morning at 7:00. >> it's 4:05. today, two votes in trenton on plans to allow casinos to open in north jersey. the senate and assembly have different plans they want to put before the voters. lawmakers want to allow two

casinos. the senate version puts an existing operator in charge of any new casino outside atlantic city. while the assembly would only make it necessary for one of the new casino licenses. the senate and assembly have also been at odds on other issues including the amount of tax revenue that are should be sent back to atlantic city. charges may be upgraded for the mother who police say smothered her baby while high on drugs shext was charged with child endangerment. the mother was under the influence when she rolled over onto her 18-month-old daughter. the father of the little girl says the baby died friday at the hospital. >> investigators are looking into a fire that destroyed a vacant warehouse last night. nbc 10 was on the scene at federal and 17th street. firefighters got the fire under control quickly. no one was hurt. >> it's 4:06. new jersey governor chris christie will take a short break from campaigning this week to give hills state of the state

address. he will highlight he says are successes at home, his opponents for the republican nomination ramp up attacks. tuesday's speech comes at a time when his public support at home is all time low. christie continues to gain ground in new hampshire. >> $1.3 billion. that is the new powerball jackpot and ticket sales between now and wednesday night could push that lottery prize even higher. those sales started shortly after no one hit the $950 million jackpot saturday night. the jackpot and others grew richer after powerball upped the odds adding extra balls to the weekly drawing so now it's harder to hit the big prize. >> went to 0 to 59. they took you want to 0 to 69 so the odds went crazy. >> they added more numbers. >> that's the idea. >> if you happen to hit the jackpot you won't become a

losses on wall street following the worst five-day start in history last week. a closer look at what's ahead for the market today in our cnbc business news at 5:00. >> now happening today jury selection begins in the trial of baltimore police officer cesar goodsen jr. he was driving the van where prosecutors say freddie gray suffered his deadly neck jury. the officer faces second-degree murder charges. officers say he did not strap gray into the van and ignored pleas for help. gray arrived at the police station injured and unresponsive and died a week later. goodson pleaded not guilty. the mother of the so called aten will ask for her bail to be reduced. a judge set the bail last week after couch returned to texas. investigators say she helped her son ethan flee to mexico as prosecutors investigated whether he violated his probation.

today in detroit nearly three dozen public schools expected to close because of planned teacher sick-outs. the district sent a special alert yesterday. detroit public schools say they are organized by a group of teachers known as detroit strikes to win. they are frustrated with the state's alleged mismanagement of the school system. they are the latest in a series of sick-out closures the past few months. >> four teens are in custody in connection with the alleged gang rape of a woman at a brooklyn play ground, a fifth person is still being sought. police released this surveillance video of suspects going into a bodega before the attack. investigators say the 18-year-old victim was walking with her father around 9 friday night when she was held at gunpoint and raped by five men. the father ran for help and returned with two police officers. the suspects objection to off. the community is angry they didn't learn of the attack more

quickly. >> why did it take two days before this was reported. the members of this community should be notified immediately when you have such a savage assault. >> charges are pending against a 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds and 17-year-old. >> in paris the colors of the french flag lit up a square in memory of the victims of the "charlie hebdo" attacks, it was last january that militants killed 17 people in all at the magazine and a jewish market. people came to remember the 130 victims of the november shootings in paris. >> today 24-year-old woman arrested for a string of jewelry heists in five states is expected to appear in federal court in atlanta. authorities say video captured abigail during several robberies dating back to april of last year. and she never wore a disguise. she's believed to have pulled off at least six heists in the

>> what a difference yesterday afternoon we were in the 60s, the rain is gone, we have cleared out but those warmer temperatures have also taken a break. that is a clear view across the delaware. it's clearly colder this morning. 33 degrees, the winds at 14 miles an hour right now we're at 21 degrees colder than yesterday. back to snow making in the pocono mountains, that's from blue mountain. it's blowing past the lights, the strong winds in the mountains up to 26 miles an hour. we're seeing wind gusts of more than 30 miles per hour in reading right up to 30 miles an hour in northeast philadelphia. which puts our wind chill readings in the teens and 20s. feels like in the low 20s in philadelphia this morning. so you need to bundle up. you also need your sunglasses. we'll see lots of sunshine. the clouds in the west will not be a problem for us. any snow will have to wait until tomorrow. doesn't look like much this little bit of energy is going to be moving fairly quickly and could give us snow showers tomorrow afternoon. but you will not see it today. the futurecast shows it will

stay clear with lots of sunshine today. clear skies at 6:00, it gets cold tonight, but tomorrow after a cold start we'll see a warm-up ahead of showers building into the area. won't see them in the morning at 11:00 in the morning, the clouds will be increasing from the west. here comes the chance of snow showers for the pocono mountains into allentown and into bucks county. but this is where it reaches the warmer air. that little sliver is a mix of some rain and snow. all of the temperatures will be above freezing so during the day i'm not expecting accumulation. 9:00 tomorrow night that quick moving line of showers, might get a dusting out of that tomorrow night. for today we'll stay completely dry. cold gusty winds, you need to bundle up. afternoon temperatures above freezing but it's never going to feel like it's above freezing. we'll go through what's ahead with the snow and beyond with the seven-day forecast in the next half hour. >> bill, we'll see you then. it's 20 minutes past 4:00. and traffic problems because of a water main break in bristol

township bucks county on route 413 at bath road crews are on the scene trying to stop the water and repair the broken main but it's causing a mess. let's get you around if you travel around that area. get you around it. jessica boyington has that. >> yeah, tracy, again this is out in bristol. pay attention heading out the door there. a little later on this might be there for some time. we'll keep you updated. route 413 is closed in both directions around bath road in this intersection in here. we like to give you a few options. if you locally want to drive take new falls road, that's right in here so you can see that pretty much parallel to where the scene is or take majors because there's a bunch. 95 right in here, or the p.a. turnpike, everything in the surrounding area is pretty much in the green so you'll be good to go if you do those. the schuylkill expressway looking okay as well this is around 202 westbound for the vine street expressway to the blue route at 11 minutes, and hardly cars in the area, this is the eastbound drive times so

from our delaware bureau, a kid who is bringing better eating to those in need will have a seat of honor at the state of the union address tomorrow night. 11-year-old braden mannering will be in the first lady's box to president obama's final state of the union in washington. braden is from new castle county. it won't be his first trixt he attended a kids state dinner and after that he started the nonprofit which provides nutritious meals for homeless and low income people. he tweeted out when he got his invitation to the u.s. capitol, still pinching myself to make sure i'm not dreaming. nbc news will have live coverage
