gvdvdv . right now at 11:00, we are tracking the first snow of the season heading in our direction as we take a live look at the first alert radar showing the system that could bring some light snow to apartment parts o later today. first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. glenn, when is it coming? >> it's been a long time coming, vai. we've already set a record for going the farthest into winter without seeing any flakes in philadelphia. hasn't been much in the poconos, either, because they're table to make snow. they'll get some natural snow but maybe just an inch or two. now, these snow returns on the radar not reaching the ground

but from central to western pennsylvania it is reaching the ground and in some cases in the higher elevations it's coming down at a decent clip. not a huge storm or anything. this is kind of an upper air disturbance, but as it moves through it can create some showers just like in the summertime you get showers, it's rain in one spot, not in another. in this case, that's the case with snow. by 2:00 this afternoon, futurecast shows some snow up in the poconos and lehigh valley. generally after 5:00 when it gets dark, that's the greatest chance of any skiend kind of a shower that might stick on a grassy surface let alone any roads and it's gone as quickly as it moves in. the other issue is the temperature. above freezing, well above freezing from the philadelphia area to the south and above freezing north and west except for allentown is 31.

even that temperature will be going up. so, yes, we are likely to see some rain and snow showers, let's say in philadelphia farther to the north just snow showers. temperatures stay well above freezing in and around the philadelphia area. closer to the freezing mark up toward the lehigh valley. more on these temperatures and timing the snow where new the seven day in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn. tracking snow, that's something we haven't been able to say so far this winter. as glenn mentioned, the recent record warmth had put a freeze on winter-related businesses. nbc 10's katy zachry explains from south philadelphia. >> reporter: some parts will see salt on the roads later today. for many of us, this is the first time this season our roads have been treated for winter weather. now, hardware stores, they tell us they're ready. this store in lafayette hill has plenty of snow products in stock. they follow the farmer's almanac which predicts a worse winter this year than in years past.

sprawling stone home was built in the 1800s, online records indicate it was up for sale. there are no injuries reported and it's not clear what caused the fire. a small fire burned part of a grocery store in aldan, delaware county. crews were called to the giant store around 4:00 this morning. we were told there were smokey conditions inside. there are no reports of injuries. happening today, a camden county father charged with murdering his three-year-old son will be in court. a grand jury indicted david creato, jr., on first degree murder charges. in october, the 22-year-old told emergency responders that brendan, his son, vanished and probably wandered off overnight. the three-year-old was found dead hours later in a wooded area near the cooper river. brendan's autopsy was inconclusive and the toxicology report came back with negative

results. >> there's been an autopsy performed with inconclusive results. there's been toxicology with negative results. >> we don't know what caused the death here. we know my client is accused but not what he's accused of having done. >> creato, jr., is expected to plead not guilty. camden county police are on alert following the ambush shooting of a philadelphia police officer. the alert warns camden officers to be aware of their surroundings. camden police say they're in communication with the fbi and closely monitoring the situation. authorities continue to look at whether there's a larger threat against philadelphia police. police say edward archer shot officer jesse hartnett at point blank range last thursday. a tipster claimed three other men linked to archer are even more dangerous. nbc news reports investigators now know the names of two of those men. officer hartnett is being hailed for his bravery under fire.

police are trying to see how a man managed to get a passport and pay for a long trip to the middle east. he took trips to saudi arabia in 2012 and 2012. investigators want to know if that travel is funded by anyone with links to terrorism. later today there will be a walk for peace in philadelphia. community organizers will lead the walk from broad street and girard avenue to city hall. it's a response to the ambush shooting of officer jesse hartnett last thursday. philadelphia police hope new video this morn canning help them catch the suspects who robbed a 70-year-old man. the victim had just taken money out of a bank and was using his walker to try to enter a restaurant on north sixth street in hunting park. two men offered to help the man but instead they pinned him against the door and snatched $450 from his pocket.

if you happen to recognize these suspects, you're asked to call east detectives. a school counselor is robbed while trying to save a life. she was assisting with cpr on a student having medical emergency, someone stole her purse. here's the surveillance video from the pima charter school on frankford avenue in kensington. the suspect can be seen walking off with the purse containing the victim's i.d. and credit cards. if he looks familiar to you or you recognize him, you're asked to call police. the coach at the center of a head butting controversy in bucks county is heading back to school. this video shows jerry devine apparently head-butt ago referee last week. the coach was ejected from the game, placed on leave from his teaching job but we learned within the last hour from district officials that devine will return to teaching immediately. devine is however still suspended from coaching. happening now, the owner of

philadelphia's biggest newspaper is announcing he is donating them a newly formed nonprofit institute. you're looking at a live picture of the event as it's happening. lenfest is giving $20 million to help endow the new operation but much more money will be needed. he bought the news company which includes the philadelphia i inquirer and the daily news. we're told readers are not expected to see any changes right away. new jersey governor chris christie is back home. he'll deliver his state of the state this afternoon. matt delucia gives us a preview from trent ton. >> we should settle for nothing less than being the very best in education, in innovation and in achievement no matter where you live. >> on the eve of his state of the state address, governor chris christie released this

hampshire where he was yesterday. >> his popularity is extremely low among voters in new jersey and people think he's an absent governor. >> governor christie is set to take the podium at 3:00 and then tomorrow he is scheduled to be out of the state, back on the campaign trail. in trenton, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. happening later today, the pennsylvania state senate will consider whether to remove the embattled attorney general from office because she doesn't have a valid law license. kathleen kane is trying to get her license back. she filed a petition arguing the supreme court justices who -- one of the supreme court justices who voted to suspend her license was involved in a scandal she helped uncover and that raises questions of impartiality. the court suspended kane's license in september after she was charged with leaking grand jury information and lying about it. the chairman of montgomery county's commissioners announced today he is running to take kane's place. josh shapiro said in an e-mail

turkey's prime minister says isis is behind the suicide attack in his country that killed 10 people, most of them german tourists. the deadly blast happened in istanbul's historic district. the area is a popular spot for visitors. another turkish official says the suicide bomber is a 28-year-old syrian national. a state-run television station says the blast was likely caused by a suicide bomber. germany warned its citizens to avoid crowds oust side tourist attractions in istanbul.

campus of iowa state university in ames. the former secretary of state is holding an organizing event there aimed at getting people to the caucus to support her on february 1. clinton's daughter chelsea is on the campaign trail in new hampshire for her mother. she's holding a round table on early learning in concord. this is the former first daughter's first campaign swing of 2016. former florida governor jeb bush tried to persuade voters in iowa. he held a town l hall in the town of corralville. he told the town there that donald trump would cause a deeper divide in washington than exists now. winter weather is hitting hard in northeast ohio. snow is leading to slick road conditions. a morning commuter in the cleveland area, forecasters expect one to three inches to fall there.

some of that snow in northern ohio is related to is being right next to the lake and we don't, of course, have that issue. we are going to be seeing snow showers for parts of the area, not everybody gets it but everybody gets the arctic blast that comes in behind it and just about everybody will be seeing rain over a part of this weekend. you can see flag s blowing in a different direction. winds coming out of the south trying to warm us up.dy?ñ 39 degrees in philadelphia right now. seven degrees warmer than it was at this time yesterday. so we're way above the freezing mark in philadelphia, bensalem, mount holly, we're close to it in potts town, reading and allentown. what happens is any precipitation that falls, especially if it's snow will knock the temperature down a few degrees so you need to get,

let's say, over 35, 36 degrees before you can feel fairly comfortable about everything just melting on the roads. dover and atlantic city in millville in the 40s already and so there's really not much of a threat of anything sticking on the roads although there could be some snow flurries there during the evening hours. what to expect here, not everybody will see snow here. we've been talking about it, getting excited about it. it hasn't happened. if we had had a normal winter, this would not be a big deal today. brief burst possible. after 6:00 p.m. you could get a burst in the philadelphia area. there could make the visibility reduce to a point where it gets more difficult to drive. and the gusty winds over 30 miles an hour. you can see snow showing up but it's not reaching the grounds september in the poconos this is reaching ground in western

pennsylvania as we go to the poconos, lehigh valley gets a little light snow but you can see it moving through the area. it's 3:00 but above freezing in allentown, pottstown, northeast philly. another band coming in from the west. that comes into the philadelphia area by dinner time. we're talking about temperatures at or above freezing. there's another batch 7:00 and into 9:00. now we're talking about temperatures dropping. so if there's going to be any kind of sticking it's after 7:00 to want. and we'll talk more about the philadelphia hour by hour timing in the next half hour. we have those afternoon snow showers and into the evening, chance of a dusting on grassy surfaces late in the day with

this morning we're celebrating a local organization that's helped people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for more than a hundred years. hillary stevens is the vice president of development at woods services and she's here along with kimberly boring who has been a resident at woods for 13 years. thank you both for being here. hillary, let's start with you. tell us about the services woods provides. >> well, we provide educational therapeutic services for people with w intellectual and developmental disabilities. we have a special program for people with acquired brain injury. >> kimberly, tell me about your experience at woods. you've been there 123r years? >> yeah, well i went down there

for schooling and then was when i was 19. i graduated when i was 21. before i was going to school i went to twe and started working. we tag clothes and umbrellas and stuff like that and send it out to the community to be sold. >> hilary, this is really -- these programs really give people like hilary a chance to grow and develop skills they may not otherwise develop, right? >> exactly right. we put a big emphasis on vocational training and hoping to get more and more people in the community working in the community so kimberly works at woods but we have lots and lots of residents out in the community working. >> you have a big fund-raiser coming up saturday night. toll us more. >> we do. it's our third gala that will be held at the simeone foundation

go through a good bit of the month of january in philadelphia and, of course, it hasn't really happened before. now, in the pocono mountains they've had natural snow. there has been a little bit of light snow reported at mount pocono during the past hour. some of the first flakes you can see on the radar. the rest of the area not seeing it reach the ground. although the atmosphere is very dry. in central pennsylvania the snow is hard enough that it is reaching the ground and some of it is falling at a decent clip. you can see it's not well organized. this is more snow showers rather than just a steady type of snow that you would get in a typical kind of winter storm. so as we go through the afternoon, we would see the poconos in lehigh valley most likely to see at least a little accumulation, maybe a half inch in lehigh valley, an inch or two in the poconos then here comes

the main system temperatures down a little bit into the 30s but it's likely to stay above freezing in philadelphia and the i-95 area while snow would be falling during the evening hours. now north and west this temperature could drop below freezing and you could get a burst of snow then we could have driving issue but in the philadelphia area as you can see we get into the low 40s. any snow this evening only knocks the temperature down a few degrees then the wind brings in the cold air. we'll go our by hur with the snowfall and see how much colder it will get with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn, you can track the snow any time you want on your nbc 10 news app, a free down lode for android and apple

sandusky is currently serving a prison sentence for child molestation. a so call aid influenza mom will be released from a texas jail today. tonya couch posted bond after it was reduced from 75,000 from a million dollars. she is charged with helping her son violate probation and escape to mexico. his defense from a deadly drunk driving arrest because that he was too rich to know right from wrong. ohio police are investigating the deadly stabbings of three people and two are children. officers responded to the scene in columbus shortly before 10:00 a.m. two of the dead were between the ages of six and eight. police say a person of interest in the case was sent to a hospital. detectives are trying to learn what led to the murders. elsewhere in ohio. a house explodes near cleveland. neighbors say they heard a blast around 8:30. investigators are working to figure out what caused the

explosion. an explosion killed 10 people and injured 18 others in a historic district of istanbul popular with tourists. turkey's president said a syria-linked is bomber is believed to be behind the attack. richard engel had more from istanbul. >> reporter: there is not a tourist in the world who's been to istanbul who does not know this spot. this is the heart of touristic istanbul, between the blue mosque and hagia sophia. a wons toitness told us he camef the mosque, saw bodies on the ground. the school groups began to leave the scene. tourists went back to their hotel sheltered inside restaurants closed their door as police came and tried to search the area, set up a cordon.

there's a bill headed to governor chris christie's desk that would raise the age to buy cigarettes in new jersey. the state assembly approved a measure last night that would raise the smoking age from 19 to 21. governor christie has not said whether he will sign it and hawaii is the only state with a smoking age of 21 or higher. similar laws exist in new york city as well. new recommendations on when women should get mammograms and it's causing controversy in the

medical world. the u.s. preventative services task force says women should start getting mammograms at age 50 with screenings every other year. some medical experts disagree saying women should start getting mammograms at age 40. but the task force says that puts them at a higher risk for false positives. the new recommendations don't apply to those with a strong family history of breast cancer or other major risk factors. >> it's important to realize, though, that a lot of the false positives in the early 40s result because that's a woman's first mammogram and we have no prior mammogram for comparison. >> breast cancer is diagnosed in about 200,000 women in the u.s. every year. the latest breakthroughs in cancer research will be topics for discussion next week at a first of its kind event happening right here in philadelphia. the american association for cancer research is teaming up with philadelphia media network to present cancer precision medicine. joining me, dr. george

leah still is scheduled to be discharged from children's hospital of philadelphia after finishing her cancer treatment. her father devon tweeted "she really beat cancer. beyond thank. for the support you showed us." the nfl player announced the five-year-old was declared cancer free by doctors in december. she was first diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in 2015. doctors gave hear 50-50 chance to survive. this little girl and her father have won the hearts of people across the country with her fight to beat cancer. >> we have a burp in tmp in then the winter that wasn't. snow showers coming into parts of the area into the evening. everybody will be feeling an arctic blast coming down

you can see a burst of heavier snow the colder air comes in tomorrow morning. temperatures go down into the te teens and we get windchills in the single digits. here's north and west again. allentown we'll have to watch the hour by hour as we go through the evening hours as we see if there''s any kind of slick conditions in that area. look what happens by tomorrow morning. feeling like six degrees in pottstown 1, 1 in philadelphia. here we go again. at least for a little while some cold air. temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to the mid-40s this afternoon. snow showers could start as rain

some adorable and unusual litter mates at six flags great adventure in jackson township ocean county. tiger and lion cubs are being raised together. within a week of their birth the cubs' mothers failed to care for them so park vets stepped in. normally the two species would never meet in the wild since they're from different continents but we're told the cats flay together, eat together and you can see they snuggle together. very nice. coming up this afternoon, it's "ellen" with kevin hart and then it's nbc 10 news at 4:00. this afternoon, powerball dreams are at an all-time high. and many hopefuls are going in on a pool at work or with friends for a better chance of
