tracking the snow and drop of temperatures, as well, let's start with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, what are we up against? >> well, there are two bands of snow, one has already moved through, some places got that, others didn't. got a chance for the second one if you didn't get it the first time. these folks got it the first time. skytop lodge in the pocono mountains. that was at 2:00 this afternoon. it was green grass all over the place. green grass in the middle of the wintertime in the poconos, so there we go. an hour and a half, totally covered in white. and now the snow has stopped, they are waiting for the second round. there's the first round going towards new york city, here comes the second band. it's better organized, that's with the cold front itself, so that has greater potential. plus, it will be nightfall and colder. dry right now, but this thing is still there, and it's curved a little bit, indicating strong winds pushing it, and so let's time it out here.
5:02 pm
going to allentown area between 6:20, 6:30. philadelphia between 7:30 and 8:00. and you get the burst of snow, the visibility can go down for a brief period of time, get a quick gusting just like you saw on the time lapse. here comes that band, future cast showing it getting past philadelphia, right around 8:00, and then it's out of here. it's just a quick burst of snow. and the temperature, that will be going down, but it's certainly not down now at 43 degrees. let's see how far it's going to go down. meteorologist sheena parveen has that part. >> yeah, glenn, and we're waiting for the arctic air to move in once the snow moves through, the cold front is going to swing through, increasing the winds. so we have the wind advisory out for the area tonight, that's the cold air moving in and the winds will be making it feel even colder. here's where the arctic air is right now, right on our doorstep up to our north and west, where
5:03 pm
temperatures here are in the single digits in some spots. this is the actual temperature. look at minneapolis. right now it is 2 degrees in minneapolis, philadelphia it's 43 degrees. buffalo we're at 20, cincinnati at 20 degrees, chicago now at 9 degrees, and this air is moving in this direction and we will be very cold as we start the day tomorrow morning. so take a look at our temperature trend for the rest of this evening. we'll be dropping down actual temperature into the mid 20s by 7:00 a.m. the feels like temperature when you factor in all the wind we'll have around tonight and tomorrow, our wind chill that feels like temperature dropping into the teens by 11:00 p.m., then early tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m., we should be feeling around 9 degrees through the philadelphia area. through the rest of the area by 8:00 in the morning, the poconos could feel below zero, maybe minus two, minus three, doylestown 6 degrees, even pottstown, that's what it will feel like with the wind, 10 degrees in millville, even cape

5:05 pm
you least expect it. >> we had ice in areas where the winter rain goes up on the roads, because the ground is getting colder, especially at night, so we want people to get in the winter mindset. >> reporter: they were thinking the very same thing at albright's hardware. >> weber grill stuff is out for planting, you know, staying on top of things and getting ready for spring, but still looking at winter, as well. >> reporter: well, just this week penndot unveiled a new website that is designed to help drivers plan their travels during snowstorms. more on that coming up in just a little bit. live in bucks county, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, doug. a picturesque scene in montgomery county, where the snow is falling by the trees in hanover township. nbc 10 wants to see your photos and videos. send them to us from your

casino concerns are growing in atlantic city tonight. the state is pushing forward with a plan to add new casinos in north jersey and leaders in a.c. are looking for ways to fight back. ted greenberg is live in our jersey shore bureau. ted, what's the next step in all this? >> well, keith, that new north jersey casino plan is set to be formally introduced in the state senate this afternoon after a major compromise, it is now moving quickly, much to the dismay of some here in south jersey.
5:15 pm
>> it's going to crash us. it's going to hurt us so bad. >> reporter: the state's latest step towards expanding gambling beyond atlantic city didn't sit well with some on the resort's boardwalk today. >> i think it's silly, because we look forward to coming out to atlantic city. >> we have an agreement on how to move forward. >> reporter: the bipartisan deal announced monday helps clear the way for a statewide referendum in november, asking voters if two new casinos should be allowed in north jersey, while supporters tout the economic benefits statewide, atlantic city council president marty small is gearing up for a battle. >> for those of us who are against it, we have to come out in numbers and get the vote out. >> reporter: the new agreement would give atlantic city's current casino operators first crack at opposing gaming halls in north jersey. >> i'm sure it's top of mind for any operator that they'd be able to get a piece of that. >> reporter: jeff is an executive with be our guest hospitality and previously ran the atlantic city convention and
5:16 pm
visitors authority. he also thinks another requirement of the plan that developers invest a minimum of $1 billion in each casino is not a major hurdle. >> certainly, it has to be a significant property to be worth, you know, to be worth its time and effort. revel was built for $2.5 billion. >> reporter: even if voters gave their blessing, small believes none would actually open until 2020 at the earliest. >> it all comes down to the ballot box, and i'm sure our good friends from pennsylvania, new york, will be very active in the campaign against it. >> reporter: now, i checked with several of atlantic city's casino operators to see if they had any comment on the latest developments. all declined. live at our jersey shore bureau, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> ted, thank you. we move now to breaking news. the pentagon says ten american sailors are being held by iran. what we know is that the pentagon briefly lost contact with two small navy craft in the
5:17 pm
persian gulf. the boats are being held by iran, the pentagon has received assurances, though, from that country that the crew and vessels will be returned safely and promptly. the boats were moving between kuwait and bahrain when the u.s. lost contact with them. back here at home, a montgomery county high school class will honor a student and member of the military who died while serving overseas. tonight, air force staff sergeant peter taub will be recognized by the cheltenham high school class of 2004. the ceremony takes place at 7:45 at the board of school directors meeting. taub died in december while serving in afghanistan. the event is open to the public. we are less than four hours away from president barack obama's final state of the union address. take a live look right now at the capitol building in washington, where the president will deliver his speech to a joint session of congress. optimism is expected to be the theme of tonight's address.
5:18 pm
let's go live to nbc 10 national correspondent steve handelsman. he has a preview of tonight's speech. good evening, steve. >> good evening. already the intense competition the 2016 presidential campaign and how it's ratcheting up the already poisonous level of partisanship around the country and here in washington is cutting into the president's speech. what happened in the persian gulf could have an effect. if the iranians, and remember it's president obama said we can trust them at least enough to do a nuclear weapons deal. if they keep in custody these nine u.s. sailors, one female sailor and the two american boats, that's going to cut into president obama's credibility as he comes before congress here tonight. keeping loose before his speech that president obama says will actually sum up the state of the nation, it's pointless, he told staffers, to push any new initiatives. mr. obama admitted to matt lauer congress and the nation are too
5:19 pm
divided near the end of his presidency. >> you wanted to unite people, and they are not united. is it a failure? >> it's a regret. i could not be prouder of what we've accomplished. >> reporter: by his first state of the union in 2010, partisanship had already struck. still, mr. obama will say tonight his moves for economic recovery and obamacare are helping the whole nation. >> part of what i want to do in this last address is to remind people, you know what, we got a lot of good things going for us. >> reporter: but after the isis inspired attack in san bernardino, on the cop in philadelphia, after paris, americans are afraid, say republicans. >> the world is on fire, that foreign policy is getting away from us, that we are less safe. >> reporter: michelle obama tonight will have an empty chair next to her, a symbol for children killed by gun violence. >> i'd like to see an empty chair for the 250,000 syrians that have been slaughtered.
5:20 pm
>> reporter: because, john mccain says mr. obama will not intervene, but in this political year with republican candidates charging america is in crisis, president obama is readying a speech with the opposite message. speaking for the gop and their response tonight, south carolina's governor nikki haley will argue the best way to fix whatever is wrong with washington and america is to elect a republican president. live from capitol hill, steve handelsman reporting. back to you. >> thank you very much. you can watch president obama's final state of the union right here on nbc 10. coverage starts at 9:00. >> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, some snow showers today, and we still have some tonight. the poconos are loving it. this is a live look up in the poconos. the ski lifts very busy this evening, but we still have more snow showers to talk about approaching the area, so we'll see this moving in, especially
5:21 pm
north and west, in just about 20 to 30 minutes here. we have another arctic blast as we go into tomorrow, so temperatures will be feeling very cold, single digits in the morning for most of the area. then we have some rain for the weekend, so we're going to be warming up for the weekend again, and that's going to bring us rain. here is skytop lodge up in the poconos. this is time lapse video, so this started around 2:00 this afternoon. now as we advance the time here, the snow showers started moving in, there you see the grass starting to get a nice coating, then even more and you can see it sticking to the pavement there. so up in the poconos, temperatures were below freezing today, able to support the snowfall, and look at it as we've gone through the afternoon. the snow has come to an end for the poconos right now, but we have another round moving in and temperatures are still in the mid 20s there. 33 in allentown, 38 now pottstown, 43 philadelphia, 42 glassboro, 44 millville. really the only spot we'd see any snow sticking right now
5:22 pm
would be possibly through parts of the lehigh valley and, of course, the poconos. again, as that next band moves in. here is the next band, it's just off the lehigh valley there moving into harrisburg at the moment. the rest of the area fairly dry, but there you see the area of snow approaching parts of lancaster and berks county and it could be limiting visibility for a time as it moves in. this is a pretty good line of snow. again, areas north and west with temperatures close to freezing once the snow moves in, temperatures could be dropping to freezing so we could see some of that sticking with low visibility. as we track it, right now it's moving east around 40 miles an hour, so pretty quick mover, not going to last too long once it moves in. allentown can expect it around 6:30, haverford by 7:15. if that line holds together, which we expect it to, it's looking good right now, all part of a cold front, cold and windy behind the cold front, so once the snow clears up, it's going to be very windy.
5:23 pm
wind advisory for the entire area until 5:00 tomorrow morning, so winds could be gusting up to 50 miles an hour. that is going to make temperatures feel a lot colder. so here's a look at future weather, there you see the line of snow moving north and west by about 7:00 p.m., moving through the philadelphia area 7:00 to 8:00, some snow showers through new jersey, clearing by about 10:00 p.m. and look at the feels like temperature by 7:00 tomorrow morning. it's going to be windy, poconos could feel like minus 3 degrees, philadelphia feeling like 8 degrees, single digits elsewhere and by tomorrow afternoon, only feeling like the middle teens. it is going to be cold tomorrow. for tonight, though, evening snow showers, it's going to start to get even windier through the overnight hours. tomorrow still a windy day, much colder. actual temperatures will only be topping out below freezing, but feeling like the teens. then you see the warmup in time for the weekend, rain into friday, may be a bit of a mix on saturday. >> sheena, thank you. next on nbc 10 news at 5:00,

5:28 pm
5:30 pm
5:31 pm
>> this is what the poconos are supposed to look like in winter. thanks to a round of snow that moved through this afternoon, the pocono mountains are finally covered in white. take a look at the flakes falling in allentown earlier this afternoon. it is our first snowfall of the season, and the wind as you can tell from the flags there helping out to whip that snow around. let's get an update on the latest conditions around the region from first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. sheena, what should we expect tonight? >> well, keith, through the next 30 minutes to an hour this evening we expect another round of snow showers moving in, so here is what the satellite and radar picture looks like. we have snow just off to the west approaching the area, so for the rest of this evening, more snow showers moving through, starting with our western counties. here you see it just outside of berks and lancaster counties, but it is getting closer, should be near the allentown area by about 6:30 and through the philadelphia area by about 7:30. and this band of snow could be lowering visibility for a while, too, as it moves through.
5:32 pm
aside from that as we go through the rest of tonight and early tomorrow morning, we have a wind advisory. winds gusting near 50 miles an hour expected, this will start overnight tonight and that's going to bring down really cold air for tomorrow. temperatures right now in allentown 33 degrees. once that band of snow moves in i showed you, should be dropping the temperature in allentown below freezing, so some of the snow could be sticking, definitely going to stick in the poconos, where trcemperatures a 24 degrees. reading should be dropping, 36 there, but the philadelphia area and northeast philly, down to wilmington, right now still in the mid to low 40s. don't expect it to stick in new jersey and delaware if the line holds together, temperatures there still the mid 40s. here is the area we have to look forward to as we go into tomorrow. we have single digit temperatures in chicago, now we're not going to be in the single digits, but it will feel like the single digits by the time you walk outside tomorrow morning. a cold and windy day. coming up, we'll track the line of snow showers moving in and
5:33 pm
take a look how cold it will be for your wednesday. >> looking forward to that, sheena. right now at 5:00, new surveillance video of an suv wanted in a paintball attack on a taxi driver in center city. we've highlighted the black suv police are looking for. nfrgs say on december 19th the cab driver was stopped at a red light on market street, that's when the suv pulled up next to him and someone inside fired a paintball into the cab, hitting the victim in the eye. paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital. we spoke to the victim today, he tells us he needs several surgeries and may lose vision in his right eye altogether. >> i lost my eye, i don't know, and i lost my job and everything, my house. everything, i feel, very bad. i'm in pain and suffering a lot. >> philadelphia police hope someone will recognize this suv and give them a call.
5:34 pm
all right, now to new jersey, where governor chris christie gave his state of the state address this afternoon. the governor spent a lot of time outside of the state as the campaign continues for his presidency, and a lot of people didn't exactly welcome him back with open arms. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live in trenton with more from the state capitol. what was it like out there, lauren? >> reporter: good evening, keith. this was actually pretty organized. this was not just one group protesting, it was multiple groups all together, all tomming with different complaints about the christie administration. one common one, though, that he isn't here enough. >> good to be home. >> reporter: governor chris christie back home in new jersey, with a nod acknowledging he's been away in his bid for the white house. back at home he took a swipe at the man he wants to replace. >> state of the union will not be a call to action tonight, it will be fancy wish lists. >> reporter: and laid out his case for results. >> the state of new jersey is
5:35 pm
strong, and it is growing stronger every day. >> how are you feeling about the state of the state? >> oh, boy, it's really expensive. it's been too expensive to live here anymore. >> reporter: outside the state house, there is doubt. >> are we going to take it? >> no! >> reporter: protesters gathered to criticize christie's policies and a schedule that's had him outside the state 261 days last year, if you count new york and pennsylvania. >> in what other place could you fail to show up to your job 261 days out of the year and still keep that job? a regular new jerseyan would have been fired a long time ago. >> reporter: inside the hall, christie took his tough talk to lawmakers who voted for a constitutional amendment that would guarantee pension payments. >> who are you going to steal the money from in new jersey? >> reporter: and warned them new jersey is watching. and the governor made several proposals today during his state of the state address, including
5:36 pm
eliminating new jersey's estate tax and using the old mid state prison for a drug treatment program. live in trenton, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> lauren, thank you. a short time ago the new jersey assembly democratic leadership responded to the governor's speech. lou greenwald labeled the speech as an example of, quote, chris christie running for president. >> his audience was not the people of new jersey. the people of new jersey have seen through this over the last six years. this is a national audience, people that are not familiar with our crisis, they are not familiar with the problems that we face. >> democrats did praise the governor for what he had to say about drug prevention and reform. okay, i want you to look at this surveillance video. security camera from margate, atlantic county. shows two men stealing a jeep cherokee in front of the owner's home. at least nine cars stolen in the
