>> announcer: nbc 10 first alert weather breaking news. right now at 6, the nbc 10 first alert weather team is tracking snow across pennsylvania, south jersey and delaware. this was the scene this afternoon as light snow came down along main street. the snow was coming down on can concord part. del dot says crews are salting road as cross the state. and the snow is moving out, but it's falling still at the jersey shore. here is a live look at cape may. good evening. i'm denise nakano. this is all part of a one-two weather punch. first the snow, then we'll get hit by an arctic blast. tonight we have team coverage of the weather threat.

we begin with nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. when with ke expect this arctic blast? >> well, by the time everybody gets out and outside in the morning, you'll feel it. it's not coming in the next few hours. traffic is generally moving okay. you can see snow on the side of the roads on i-95 so it gives you an idea of some of the side roads, the sidewalks, driveways could have some slippery spots. but the visibility is improving tremendously. the snow has pretty much moved out of most of the area. we still have a winter weather advisory for the coastal counties in new jersey. just until 7:00 as the last of the snow is just about to move offshore. you can see that on the live radar right near atlantic city, cape may county starting to see that snow move out, ocean county will be seeing it move out. the rest of the area of course it has already ended. this is on the northern edge of a southern storm that came through, and now is moving offshore.

the visibility is improving tremendously except in atlantic city where it's still enough to produce a little bit of lower visibility. the temperatures of course are going to be critical overnight tonight. they are holding relatively steady right now, but the arctic blast is on the way. it could be some icy spots tonight but a lot more cold air is coming in. more on those temperatures and the potential winter storm for later in the seven-day in a few minutes. >> glenn, thank you. the snow is impacting travel tonight at philadelphia international airport. arriving flights are delayed an average of 30 minutes and travelers should check their flight status where heading out. you can also call the airport at 800-phl-gate. we continue our first alert team weather coverage with randy gyllenhaal. live in haddonfield, randy, how are the roads out there tonight? >> reporter: denise, this wasn't really a problem for drivers. this is it some light and fluffy snow. you can see it just coming off the trees here. it did leave behind a beautiful scene on the gross and on the

trees across the region here in haddonfield. this is just a dusting, and it is just a dusting usually that would be a nonevent. but after a winter life we've had so far, this snow got people out of their homes, outside to take some pictures. let me show you some video from throughout the day. people in haddonfield shopping downtown. such a warm winter this new snow brought people outside. center city philadelphia also packed with families taking selfies in the snow. at love park, such a contrast from a few weeks ago, christmas day 70 degrees, now the light snow started falling this afternoon. road crews in delaware say they were the first to start salting. penndot has 162 trucks on call tonight but they're reporting absolutely no problems on the road. just a light dusting easing into winter. >> so it's finally snowing so we decided to come out today. we're really glad we did because the city is absolutely beautiful. look ste trees, like the first snowfall it's just awesome. >> it's magical. >> it is. it's magical, yeah.

>> honestly, i really enjoy that it really was warm before so, yeah, i'd rather stay in warm weather. >> reporter: well, it had to come eventually. now 28 days officially into winter and we have 63 more days to go until spring. live in handenfoield, randy gyllenhaal. a wintry scene down the shore a dusting of white covered the ground here in margate. you can see snow sticking to grassy areas but not the roadways. a snowy and windy scene across the center city. the flak was blowing this afternoon was snow tell if across the city. snow a welcome sight for skiers and snowboarders. here is camelback mountain. not only are the flakes falling there but thanks to the colder temperatures they've been able to make snow, too. to get updates on the changing winter weather situation anytime, be sure to check out the nbc 10 news app, a free

download. he was a good guy that work here. he helped everybody out. he loved his job. >> a community in mourning following a deadly shooting at a homeless shelter in north philadelphia. police are still looking for the man who shot and killed one worger and injured another employee at the station house shelter early this morning. we're told the suspect was u victim from the shelter days ago after allegedly breaking the rules. we are live with the latest on the investigation in north philadelphia. what have you learned tonight? >> reporter: well, denise, people say the suspect was last seen running here towards the train tracks xs police have come back here multiple times to search the area. police have not released the suspect's name. they do say they know wa exactly who they're looking for, but tonight he's still on the run. >> i heard the gunshots. i heard five of them go off. >> reporter: the refuge men find

at the station house shelter was disrupted this morning by a series of gun shots. >> what you would not expect is a worker in a homeless shelter helping people who need help the most being shot. >> reporter: a tomorrformer gue was kicked out friday for being drunk returned this morning to get his belongings. there was an argument according to police the suspect started shooting, wounding one employee and killing another. >> he was a good guy who worked here. he helped everybody out. he loved his job. >> he was friendly. he talked to everybody through the building, you know, about their problems. >> reporter: all guests are usually searched when entering the building, but the housing director said the suspect slipped in with the food service workers and was not far from the door when he opened fire. >> we will investigate whatever appropriate means we need to investigate to ensure that in the future our employees and residents are safe. >> reporter: city leaders will

be reviewing the shelter's security plan to see if changes need to be ma made. but managers say a metal detector would not have made a difference. >> reporter: does this make you fearful of staying here? >> in a way, yeah. in a way. >> reporter: the shelter remained open to keep the homeless men out of the elements. although today's operations continued with an added sense of grief. police have not released the names of the victims. we're told, though, the man who died is in his 40s. the 26-year-old employee was shot in the hip and continues to recover at temple university hospital. reporting live in north philadelphia, nbc 10 news. >> philadelphia mayor release a statement calling the shooting a heartbreaking tragedy. he also said, implore philadelphiaens needed shelter services to continue to utilize them as we enter a code blue this evening. the city is squarely focused on

your safety. if you know a homeless person in need of shelter, call our 24-hour hotline at 215-232-1984. new at si6, an overturned ch causing a backup nooer the montgomery drive exit. you can see the massive line of traffic that stretched for a few miles. police confirmed at least one person was taken to the hospital. philadelphia police hope you can help find this young lady. 12-year-old london babrabrun solomon was last seen with her friends last night around 6:30 near the chilton mall. her family has been look fog her ever since. solomon was last seen wearing a bambi sweatshirt. she walks with a lake brace. if you have any information about her whereabouts, contact philadelphia police. in hawaii, the search continues for 12 missing marines after a helicopter collision. we've learned a local marine was on board. officials have confirmed captain brian t. kennedy from philadelphia was on one of two

marine helicopters that crashed off the island of owe oahu on thursday night. rescue teams have expanded their search in the pacific but are battling rough seas to find the missing marines. a public memorial was held today for air force staff sergeant peter taub of montgomery county. dozens turned out in harleysville to remember the cheltenham high school graduate. he was killed in afghanistan last month. he and five others died when a lone suicide bomber on a motorcycle drove into their group and detonated a suicide vest. making their way home. we'll tell you where those american prisoners freed by iran are now. how low can they go? people across the region are feeling less pain at the pump. where you can get gas for less than 2 bucks. glenn? we've been tracking this snow all afternoon. it is just about to move offshore. but we have a much more

three american prisoners released by iran are on their way to germany. first they made a stop in geneva, switzerland. this is video of their plane touching down there. four americans were freed yesterday as part of a prisoner exchange. a fifth prisoner was let go as part of a separate deal. today president obama celebrated their release and doctors are evaluating the group at a german hospital. it's not yet clear when they might return to the u.s. well if you thought today's snow was significant, well, we've got a potential winter

storm that i'm tracking that's heading our way. t in the nbc 10 first alert seven-day forecast. the republicans in harrisburg were fighting each other over the state budget. that's right. each other. the republican state senate passed a responsible budget that "begins" to fund education but the republican house of representatives has insisted on a budget that fails to fund education and balloons the deficit. call your legislator, tell them to pass a budget that's right for pennsylvania.

the nbc 10 first alert weather team is tracking snow, our first snowfall of the year for some. but the coating white on bushes like here at broad and glenwood streets in north philadelphia. they won't be playing ball here, light snow fell there earlier today. all you see now is some raindrops leaving the grass on the field once covered in white. and here's something we haven't seen in a while, a snow-covered windshield. this was the scene down the shore in ventnor. the snowfall had little impact on the traffic. glenn will be here with an uptate in a few minutes. as temperatures drop, so are gas prices across the region. several gas prices advertising gallons for less than 2 bucks a

gallon, $1.97 a gallon. in pottstown, montgomery county. the average price in philadelphia is $2.10, it drops to $1 the.82 in delaware and south jersey has the lowest average in the region with drivers paying $1.71 a gallon. now to decision 2016. we're just a few hours from the final democratic debate before the iowa caucuses. and it's shaping up to be the most heated face-off yet. hillary clinton and bernie sanders could throw some elbows at each other tonight. new polls show the race tightening into a virtual dead-heat. guns, race relations and iran are expected to be major top of icks tonight. and the debate comes your way tonight at 9:00 right here on nbc 10 and on nbc10.com. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz.

well, just on the northern edge of a storm that moved through the area, we've got some slick spots possible tonight from the leftover snow, especially new jersey, an arctic blast coming and also a late-week storm that could become the first significant winter storm of the season. right now we have 32 degrees in philadelphia, the wind is only 9 miles an hour. it will be picking up tonight, making it feel like 24. it's 15 degrees colder than at this time yesterday. and we continue to have the winter weather advisory right along the coastline for those counties just until 7:00. so it's almost expired already. the snow almost out of the picture entirely. so now we watch the temperatures as we go through the night tonight. we are generally around 30 degrees, a little bit below the freezing mark, meaning there could be some slick spots where some of that snow fell especially on the untreated surfaces, side roads, bridges, overpasses. we've got some really cold air

on the way. feels like 18 below in chicago now, 22 below in minneapolis and some of that air is headed in this direction as we go through the next couple of days. so the feels-like temperature by midnight is not too bad. 11:00, 20s. watch what happens as we go through the night and into the morning hours. wow, all of a sudden it's down to single digits the way it feels by tomorrow morning, 3 below in mt. pocono. and then it doesn't warm up a whole lot in the middle of the afternoon it's feeling like barely into the teens. and tomorrow night we're back down to single digits and maybe even closer to zero. the only place reporting snow right now is atlantic city so this is just about over with. there's the live radar. you can see the last gasp of that system that has moved offshore, the heavier snow in new jersey and southern delaware a couple of places had an inch

or two out of that. the arctic air is going to be with us for a couple of days, and then we watch the south later on during the week and there could be a fairly significant storm develop. more on that coming up at 11:00 tonight with more information coming in to us. for the rest of the night tonight, all that snow is pretty much going out. gradual clearing. windy. much colder. 22 for the low in philadelphia, but it's going to feel again like single digits in the morning. tomorrow high temperatures only in the upper 20s with the winds potentially gusting to 40 miles an hour. it's going to feel cold all day, and another bitter cold day on tuesday. not quite as cold wednesday or thursday, and then it's friday and into saturday with that potential winter storm. that's something that we're going to be watching all week. of course it's too soon to talk about amounts. but it does have potential. i'm danny pommells how much
