first taste of snow this winter. good evening. i'm denise nakano. the snow likely turned to ice by now as the temperatures keep dropping. our first measurable snowfall of the season today left up to three inches of snow in southern delaware. this is a snowy scene in wilmington this afternoon. one to three inches accumulated in jersey as well. a little less in the philadelphia area. up to a half inch fell. nbc 10 in manayunk and center city tracking snow this afternoon. the snow has stopped falling. the cause for concern is this arctic area coming in to our region. live team coverage. let's begin with glenn hurricane schwartz. >> reporter: the snow has moved out in some places. it is still on side roads. in cape may where it was snowing for hours and hours the roads are wet.

the visibility is excellent in philadelphia now. the snow moved out. temperatures going down. the live radar. a few snow flurries coming in from the western portion of the state of pennsylvania. the main storm, that's moved on. we're on the northern edge of the storm. we could end up with icy spots by daybreak. especially on untreated surfaces and especially in delaware and in south jersey. areas that got the one to two, even three inches of snow earlier today. the temperatures now have gone below freezing throughout the entire area. really going to be plunging overnight tonight, along with the wind going up and that means the windchill goes down. the waif it's going to feel at 6:00 in the morning, like single digits throughout just with about the entire area. it's not going to warm with up a lot after that.

the temperatures not going down a lot until 5:00 a.m. get ready for some bitter cold. we'll talk more about that. how long it will last and potential for significant snow for the winter storm later in the seven day in a few minutes. >> let's continue our first alert team coverage. randy gyllenhaal is live in lower merion township. cold weather like this can be really dangerous. >> reporter: officials here in montgomery county issued a code blue that could extend through much of the week. they want people to remember just one thing -- the number 30. it takes about 30 minutes to get frostbite out here. this on the first snowfall of the winter. >> here we go. >> reporter: there wasn't that much to work. >> so cold. >> reporter: but emma and daniel made do with the dusting on the ground. >> put this in there. >> making snowballs, tiny ones but after an unusual winter they'll take what they can get.

>> yeah, it is like one day it is really warm and the next day a blizzard. >> reporter: some had enough snow that you had to clean off the car but not so much to cause concern driving. the real issue, officials say, is the approaching cold. arctic blast that could turn dangerous for the most vulnerable. >> hoping it would be a little warmer but it started snowing. >> reporter: jameel is homeless and didn't have socks today but he got a helping fland a stranger in center city. >> she brought donations to love park. >> i had some children's clothes, shoes, i have boots, blankets, pillows. extra pants, socks, wool socks. >> reporter: temperatures will dip in to the teens over the next few days. an arctic shock after weeks of record warmth. >> honestly, i really enjoy it was warm before. so i'd rather stay in warm

weather. >> reporter: a quick note. the sidewalks and the parking lots are getting icy. we were with slipping around a few minutes ago. one more thing, officials are asked people to be wary of space heaters because they could catch things on fire if they are near something flammable. one more thing to keep hand in mind, 63, the number of days until the official start of spring. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> we are keeping track of that number and the arctic chill an the next chaps of snow with the nbc 10 news app. it is a free download or check out nbc 10.conbc10.com. a suspect is in custody following a threat against students at penn state. armed officers patrolled outside of hamilton hall. someone made a verbalal threat against two with students living them there forcing them to lock down the building. this the lockdown had been since

lifted. authorities haven't released the identity of the suspects. also new at 11:00, police in north philadelphia are investigating after a body was found in an alley. officers responded to a home on north bailey street just after 7:30 tonight. police found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. the 42-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. police say no motive is known at this time and anyone with information is asked to contact police. tonight, philadelphia police are trying to track down a man they say murdered an employee at a homeless shelter. detectives say the man got angry after getting evicted from the shelter a few days ago. that's before he opened fire on two employees this morning. one was hurt but the other was killed. nbc 10 has the latest from detectives. >> reporter: after the shootings the suspect was last seen running toward the train tracks. police arrived here multiple times today looking for

evidence. >> heard the gunshots. heard five go off. >> reporter: the refuge was disrupted by a series of gunshots. >> what you would not expect as a work wither in a homeless shelter helping people who need the help the most being shot. >> reporter: a former guest kicked out on friday for being drunk returned this morning trying to get his belongings. there was an argument. police believe the suspect started shooting, wound one employee and killing another. >> he was a good guy that worked here. he helped everybody out. he loved his job. >> he was friendly. he talked to everybody in the building about their problems. >> reporter: all guests are usually searched when entering the building but the housing director said the suspect slipped in with the food service workers and was not far from the door when he opened fire.

>> we will investigate whatever we need to investigate to make sure in the future that our employees and residents are safe. >> reporter: city leaders will be reviewing the shelter's security plan to see if changes need to be made. managers say a metal detector would not have made a difference. >> does it make you fearful of staying here? >> in a way, yeah. yeah. >> reporter: the shelter remains open to keep the homeless men out of the elements. the operations continued with an added sense of grief. city leaders are concerned the shooting will deter the homeless from seeking shelter. with temperatures expected to reach dangerous lows tonight, efforts are being taken to keep guests safe. new information about a house fire in south jersey we first reported last night. police tell us an 85-year-old woman died in the fire here on ross road in monroeville salem county. they tell us a second person was

able to get out of the burning house. no word on what sparked the flames. growing concern over the fate of some americans missing in iraq. the u.s. embassy in baghdad confirms several americans are missing after local media reported that three americans had been kidnapped. there were no immediate claims of responsibility. security in and around baghdad has deteriorated after months of relative calm. in hawaii, the search continues for 12 missing marines after a helicopter collision. a local marine was on board. officials have confirmed captain brian t. kennedy from philadelphia was on one of two helicopters that crashed. the coast guard says the search extends eight miles out from the north shore area. officials say they found debris consistent with the type of missing helicopters but they are not making anymore comments

one police officer is dead and another wounded after a shootout with a suspect this morning in utah. officer doug barney died after he was shot in the head bay man who had left the scene of a traffic accident. that suspect was shot and killed by police. philadelphia police officer jesse hartnett is in the hospital but tonight we're told he is doing well. he's had several surgeries to repair damage from being shot in the arm. it happened a week ago in west philadelphia. hartnett will require more surgeries. the man accused of ambushing hartnett has been charged with with attempted murder. police in new york are searching for two suspects accused of beating a muslim man outside of school in the bronx.

investigators say this two men shouted isis, isis before attacking on friday night. the suspe he had just picked up his 7-year-old niece from school and says the young girl witnessed the attack. >> i was bleeding. she said she never go back to school. >> reporter: his niece was not injured in the attack. the incident is being investigated by the nypd hate crimes division. turning to decision 2016, tonight's democratic presidential candidates showed up for theirfire r final showdown before voters have their say in iowa. with the polls tightening, bernie sanders and hillary clinton sharpened their attacks

recaptured. a successful liftoff for a spacex rocket in california today. but the landing not so much. the rocket took off from vandenberg air force base putting a satellite in to orbit to monitor ocean levels. when the rocket landed on a floating barge in the pacific, the support legs broke and it toppled over. gas prices dropping as fast as the temperatures around the region. several gas stations advertising prices less than $2 a gallon like here where motorists enjoy $1.97 a gallon near the giant in pottstown, montgomery county. the average price for a gallon of regular in philadelphia is $2.10. the price drops to 1.82 a gallon in delaware and south jersey has the lowest in the region with drivers paying $1.71 a gallon. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist

glenn hurricane schwartz. >> reporter: another arctic air mass on the way after we had some snow out there. there could be slick spots tonight. things will definitely be freezing by the time we get up in the morning and we have potential for a late-week winter storm. right now, we are cooling down. only slowly. 31 degrees. winds west southwest at nine, 11 degrees colder than this time yesterday. right now feels like 23. it will feel a whole lot colder when you get up in the morning. look at that. 6:00 a.m., 22 degrees, feeling like 8, 8 a.m., feeling like 7 and even by noontime only to 13 the way it feels. so the temperatures at the moment, mid-20s to near 30 degrees. beehlo freezing everywhere except for wildwood with and it's going to get much colder.

look at how cold it is. 17 below in chicago. 25 below in minneapolis. that air is headed our way even detroit feeling like below zero. 6:00 a.m., not only 8 in philadelphia but feeling like 2 in allentown and reading and does not go up a lot during the afternoon. in some cases barely to double-digits the way with it is going to feel. by tomorrow night, that's going to be the coldest. we have some negative numbers by tuesday morning. some of the windchills near zero or even below zero. we have a couple of snow flurries back in central pennsylvania. this is the way it started 12 the storm well to the south, we were just on the northern edge of it. of course it lasted longer in south jersey and southern delaware. that's why they had more snow. some places had close to three inches of snow.

philadelphia officially a half inch. that's the first measurable snow of the season. we had trats earlier. this is the next storm. it's going to be developing it looks like late in the week. not the next couple of days. plenty of time to watch it but a lot of computer models generally agree some sort of east coast storm will dwochlt it should be cold enough for snow or at least parts of the area and potentially a lot of moisture by one of the computer models. we will talk about that coming up later. tonight, back to clearing, windy, colder. 22 for the low by morning. the wind will be picking up and gusting to 30 miles an hour. maybe a couple of flurries north and west. windy tomorrow, much colder. highs in the upper 20s. not going to feel like that. gusts up to 40 miles an hour. the seven-day forecast, tuesday

nbc 10 news starts now. a bitter chill settling in to our region after our first measurable snow of the season today. this is a live look outside at the flag on the building blowing in the wind. a risk for ice on sidewalks and side streets. nbc 10 alongside workers who are spreading salt in center city. let's go to nbc 10 first alert

meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. how cold will it get? >> a lot colder than it is now. we will see a change between now and 6:00 a.m. traffic is moving along fine. the main roads will be dry. some of the side roads, untreated surfaces, especially delaware and south jersey that had the most snow may see issues in the morning, some icy spots opposed to anything widespread. nothing on the radar right now. a few snow flurries in central pennsylvania. a couple could cross the mountains. this was the significant system. the storm to the south just on the northern edge a bit and that's why we did get some snow and closer to the center of the storm, southern delaware, south jersey, saw the most. got some icy spots overnight tonight. especially on the untreated surfaces and especially in southern delaware and extreme south new jersey. some places had two with to three inches of snow.

the temperatures at the moment are in this mid-20s, near 30 degrees. s this dropped beehlo freezing. the temperatures will continue to plunge overnight. the wind will increase, though. that's going to help to dry out the roads a bit. by 7 a.m., single digit windchills everywhere and some places close to zero. we're going to see more places with negative numbers before this arctic air mass is done with this. you can see the temperature fairly level to about 3:00 a.m. and then it plunges by 7:00 a.m. down to 20 and as you saw feeling like single digits. you see how long the blast is going to last, and also talk more about the potential for significant snow coming up in the seven day in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn. nbc 10 randy gyllenhaal is continuing our team coverage. he is tracking the windchill from lower merion. >> officials here in montgomery county issued a code blue

140,000 volunteers will tackle 1800 projects in the region. governor and mayor will be among the volunteers. new tonight, the search is on for the person who shot a man inside of a home tonight. nbc 10 on south 57th street around 5:00. detectives say that someone shot the victim in the back. he's in stable condition at a hospital tonight. no word with on what led to the shooting. philadelphia police hope you can find this girl, 12-year-old london solomon last seen with her friends last night around 6:30. she had on a bambi sweatshirt and walks with a leg brace. if you have any information on her whereabouts, you are asked to call police. meantime, five americans released from prison in iran are free tonight. this is video of a vehicle convoy that appears to include

the released americans on a road in germany. the americans were let go as part of a prisoner deal with iran's leader, freed on the same weekend the nuclear agreement with iran took effect. nbc has this report. >> reporter: freedom for five americans imprisoned in iran. three of them arriving at this swiss airport before transferred to a u.s. base. the climax of a historic weekend. in texas, a group of iranians walk free. a cold war style prison exchange a day after a nuclear deal. >> they were united in welcoming home sons and husbands and brothers who endured a nightmare. >> reporter: one of the five finally free is "washington post" reporter, a u.s. official who led the prison exchange negotiation with iran tweeting thrilled to see jason land safely.

a tornado in southwest florida leaves two dead and four others hurt. the national weather service is blaming an ef-2 tornado for this heavy damage. first responders rescued a woman from the wreckage of a collapsed home early sunday. sarasota county officials say 45 homes sustained damage. about 17,000 residents lost power. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. >> poconos, not much snow today but you will be happy by next weekend. going to get precipitation and actual snow. few slick spots leftover from some of the snow that fell today because the arctic blast is coming in here. we have a good chance of a late-week winter storm affecting a good bit of area.

the flag not blowing as hard as it will be tomorrow. it will be windy. 31 degrees. ten mile an hour winds right now. wind will continue to increase during the night tonight. that's really going to push the temperatures down as we head toward morning. so, by 6:00 a.m., 21 degrees. feels like eight. 8 a.m., it will be feeling like eight. and that is warm compared to the way tuesday morning will feel around here. 31 philadelphia, 20s across much of the rest of the area. certainly cold enough for icy spots. not on the main roads but especially delaware and south jersey had more significant snow. look at the feels like temperatures. by 6:00 a.m., three below in the poconos. two with in allentown and reading. and barely go in to the teens in many parts of the area.

allentown barely out of the single digits for windchills tomorrow. again, it will get colder than that tomorrow night. look at that. 11 p.m. monday and minuses there. 6:00 p.m. on tuesday, two below in pottstown. one below in doylestown and close to zero in cape may. in the middle of the afternoon on tuesday it is feeling like single digits. this isn't a few hours of arctic air. this is over 40 hours of single digit windchills or colder. live radar not showing much now. there was plenty earlier today. the storm to the south and that, more than an a inch of it, created that snow and we will see more of that later in the week. close to three inches in southern delaware. airport at philadelphia got a half inch of first measurable

snow of the season. tonight, well it is gradual clearing. 22 in philadelphia. 19 north and west. the wind is picking up. gusting to 30 miles an hour by daybreak. during the day gusting to 40 miles an hour with temperatures only in the 20s. you saw how cold it will feel by tuesday morning, even tuesday afternoon. it's cold all the way to wednesday morning. and then thursday it is just kind of chilly and that sets up for a potential snowstorm affecting the area on friday and in to saturday for tomorrow night. chip kelly and andy ried before him, peterson will bring offensive experience to the coaching job. is that the right move for a team that struggled on defense?
