day today. winds now at 21 miles an hour. temperatures have fallen into the 20s and 30s. right now it's 28 in trenton. 30 degrees in phil dadelphia. factor in that wind. 17 degrees is what it feels like in the city. the forecast hour by hour is calling for plenty of wind. we will see sunshine. clouds are moving out. 25 degrees at 6:00. not much warmer. in fact, a little cooler at 9:00 in the morning. by lunchtime, sunny, windy and 27 degrees. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood. we'll be back in 10 minutes. jessica boyington is watching your traffic. >> we're watching the schuylkill right now. no problems yet. moving along nicely. no construction or lane restrictions here eastbound from the blue ridge to the vine street speedway. average speeds are up there around montgomery drive. pretty much looks the same heading up or down the whole schuylkill expressway. over in conshohocken, there's

construction. between front street and portland road, follow the detours on the p.a. turnpike. we're still in the green westbound or eastbound, 24 minutes from route 1 to valley forge. i'll be back in the next ten minutes with a look at your mass transit. tracy? 4:02 right now. if you're headed out to work, be aware, there could still be slick spots on the road. nbc 10'séju katy zachry is live malvern to talk about the conditions. katy? >> reporter: it is blustery, frigid out here. what a great day for people who are normally going to work or school today to have a day off because of mlk day. otherwise it would be a tough way to start the week. we have found icy patches throughout our area during our travels on 76 and 202. and locally, we are at a wawa parking lot in malvern, just one example of how they're treating surfaces. this is an area where there was some water leftover from last

night, from the snow that came in. really, the first sizeable snow that we've seen so far this season. it is incredibly slick in this area. i've seen employees continuously salting this area as well as the greater parking lot here. this is just one example of how, really, the overall area should be -- of how you should be thinking when you head out to your car, when you're walking to work. things are really -- can be very icy if there are untreated patches out there. that's why you're likely going to see salt in some areas. in the next half hour, we are canvassing the various counties around us. there are code blues in effect right now because the temperatures, as tracy said at the top of the show, and as bill said, are not going to go above freezing today. that gives you one example of what we're in for. we'll see you in 25 minutes. live in malvern, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> you can get updates free with your nbc 10 news app.

there are also links for real-time traffic information. just about 4:04 right now. 29 degrees outside. developing now, u.s. officials are trying to find three american contractors reportedly kidnapped in iraq. iraqi media is reporting americans were on their way to baghdad international airport when they were kidnapped by militia. u.s. officials are working with authorities in iraq to find them. you can count on nbc 10 to follow this developing story and bring you any information as we get it on air and on our nbc 10 news app. police are holding a suspect following a threat against students at penn state university. a father threatened to harm his children, who are students at the school. that forced police to lock down hamilton hall, a dorm there on campus last night. 500 students were told to remain in place for four hours. authorities have not revealed the suspect's identity. searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 42-year-old man in north philadelphia.

that shooting happened on north bailey street. the man was found shot in the chest in an alley behind his home. anyone with information is asked to call police. in hawaii, the search goes on for 12 missing marines after a helicopter collision. and we've learned a local marine is among them. the marines confirm that captain brian p. kennedy from malvern chester county was on board one of two military helicopters that crashed off the island of oahu thursday night. the search was extended eight miles out from the coastline. officials say they found some debris consistent with those helicopters. meantime, a public memorial was held for air force staff sergeant yesterday in harleysville to remember the cheltam high school graduate killed in afghanistan last month. he and five others died when a lone suicide bomber on a motorcycle drove into their

group and detonated a suicide vest. today is the day the nation celebrates civil rights leader dr. mrnt luartin luther king jr. this is video from last year's event at girard college. 140,000 volunteers will participate in hundreds of projects throughout the region. volunteers at girard college will get a free lunch as well. they will pack and deliver 2,500 lunches to those volunteers. and several day of service projects for children and adults are planned at rutgers university in camden. there will be a marathon reading of dr. martin luther king's letters from birmingham jail. and our coverage of martin luther king jr. day will continue all day long. we'll take you county by county to show you how people across our area are remembering dr. king by serving others.

coming up on seven minutes after 4:00. it is cold and windy. the temperatures have been coming down overnight. and gusty winds, keeping any ice on the roadways and sidewalks and untreated surfaces in place. that little bit of snow we saw yesterday afternoon and into the evening hours, it's long gone. but some spots are seeing the ice. cold and windy through the day today and getting colder toni t tonight. tomorrow morning, it will feel near zero. tracking the potential for snow. possibly the first major snowstorm of the season late in the week. for now, early in the morning, 24 degrees in allentown. 29 in northeast philadelphia. atlanta being city, it's clear and 28 degrees. back to making snow at camelback. live view from camelback mountain in the pocono mountains. the wind is blowing. 11 is what it feels like in allentown. 18 degrees for millville. it's cold all around. we will see sunshine. just a few scattered thin clouds

saw and heard after the final democratic debate before the iowa caucuses. vai sikahema has more. vai? >> all three democrats stuck to issues and avoided personality clashes. that doesn't mean they agreed on everything. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley took the stage in charleston, south carolina, last night. they took questions on guns, taxes, iran and climate change. it was health care that got the two leading candidates going. sanders questioned clinton's willingness to help the middle class hours after he released a plan for universal medicare. >> health care to all people, get private insurance out of health insurance, lower the cost of health care. put middle class families by 5,000 bucks. >> i'm not sure whether we're talking about the plan you just introduced tonight or we're talking about the plan you introduced nine times in the congress. but the fact is, we have the affordable care act. >> o'malley did his best to

stand out. new nbc/wall street journal poll shows clinton leading sanders by 25 points nationally. now in the republican white house race, sniping continues between front-runner donald trump and the rest of the field. ted cruz fired back after taking heat from trump for saying the billionaire businessman had new york values. an apparent code for being liberal. >> our friends in the media seems like they lit their hair on fire. they were very confused. well, what are these new york values of which you speak? >> he's a nasty guy. nobody likes him. nobody in congress likes him. nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. >> jeb bush took aim at trump yesterday, accusing him of not being be a true conservative. iowa caucuses are two weeks from today. expect a lot of campaigning in the hawkeye state between now and then. i'm vai sikahema. nbc 10. >> vai, thanks. it's about 4:15. a happy day.

that's what president obama declared yesterday after a prisoner swap with iran sent five prisoners home. here is a look at three of those u.s. citizens arriving by jet in switzerland. short time later they went to a u.s. military hospital in germany to be checked out. at about the same time in houston, a group of iranians walked free. the sister of this released u.s. marine is excited about being reunited with him soon. >> we have been on pins and needles, dying to see him. we haven't seen him in 4 1/2 years. >> another american, bob levinson is still unaccounted for. he disappeared in iran nine years ago. his family says they are devastated that he has been left behind. the release of those prisoners capped off a long diplomatic process between the u.s. and iran. the process started with the nuclear deal. iran's president called the deal with the u.s. and other world powers a win/win for everyone.

iran got international sanctions lifted after curbing its nuclear program. the obama administration imposed new sanctions for ballistic missile testing and other sanctions remain in place for human rights violations and its support of terrorism. president obama said diplomacy won the day. >> as i said in my state of the union address, ensuring the security of the united states and the safety of our people, s demands a smart, disciplined and patient approach to the world. >> u.s. and iran have not had full diplomatic relations since 1979 when iran had its islamic revolution. that video, showing a spacex rocket exploding on an ocean fwharge california. the rocket lifted off yesterday,

successfully carrying a satellite into low orbit but the rocket toppled over and blew up on landing when a support leg of the barge broke. we want to update you now on ambushed philadelphia police officer jesse hartnett. he had several surgeries to repair damage from three gunshots in the arm. he will require more operations. the shooting happened january 7th in west philadelphia. the man accused of ambushing the officer is charged with attempted murder. the fbi is investigating a possible link to terrorism. it's 4:17. police in upstate new york are investigating the deaths of three people near a college as a potential murder/suicide. the bodies of two men and a woman were found inside a house near the state university of new york of geneseo. two were founiversity athletes d one was a former student.

>> no gun was used. i can tell you that a knife was recovered at the scene. >> police believe the killer was among the victims. a recall to warn you about. trader joe's is recalling bags of raw cashew pieces because it could be contaminated with salmonella. trader joes is giving refunds to any customers. the water crisis in flint, michigan, is not just an emergency. it's a disaster. >> the fact that it was known, a big tradeoff and the people of flint have been betrayed by their own government. >> jackson spoke at a church in flint yesterday. the water became contaminated in 2014 after the city switched from a water system to the flint river to save money. the corroding water was not

treated. lead was present in both the water and in children's blood. in response to a crisis, clearing the way for federal air. pair of tornadoes touched down in southwest florida, killing two people. a woman was rescued from the wreckage of a collapsed home early yesterday morning. national weather service confirms a tornado, packing winds of up to 132 miles an hour hit two florida towns. sarasota county officials say 45 homes sustained damage. >> everything that touched, power lines exploding and debris flying through the air. it was one of the scariest things i ever witnessed. >> two people were killed when their mobile home was hit by a tornado. these are the first tornado-related deaths in florida since 2012. just about 20 minutes past 4:00. what a difference. wind and cold. we saw light snow yesterday.

that's gone. you'll see sunshine today. but the wind, cold temperatures, they'll stay with us. 30 degrees now in philadelphia. the winds are gusting to 26 miles an hour. and it feels like the temperatures are in the teens today. single digits for tomorrow. you can see, still a bit damp at cape may. one of the few spots above freezing this morning. but not by much. look at the gusty winds, 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts right now at lancaster. 35-mile-an-hour wind gusts for reading and 26 miles an hour in philadelphia. stronger in wilmington. that will keep the cold in place this morning. it is just above freezing for north cape may. cape may at 33 degrees. one degree above freezing. go inland a bit and you're likely to see icy spots. it will be a slow warm-up during the day today. might see some flurries. very dry air. though there is a chance we will see a late week snow storm come together for the east coast it

hasn't even formed yet. hasn't even reached the west coast yet. can't show it to you just yet. we're monitoring that possibility for the end of the week. hour by hour forecast, look at the temperatures this afternoon. 20s. and coming down fairly quickly by 11:00 tonight, philadelphia will be in the teens by this time tomorrow morning. the teens across the board, right on to atlantic city with windchills, even colder. they'll be hovering around zero tomorrow morning. some very cold air among the coldest of the season. and gusty winds as well, keeping things cold. sunshine will be bright. temperatures won't get anywhere near the 50s today. we'll be stuck in the 20s during the day today. this weekend, chance of snow comes through friday night and saturday. 35 on saturday. and then we'll get some breaks of sunshine with the snow leaving us on sunday. we'll be keeping a close eye on that potential all week long. tracy? >> all right, bill. thanks for that.

it's 4:25. 29 degrees outside. the philadelphia eagles are expected to officially name doug pederson as their new head coach this week. he is expected to keep running backs coach among others. ahead of this week's expected

announcement, analysts are already talking about the eagles' pick. >> one thing about doug pederson, people will say it's a terrible hire. you can't say that yet. we have to let him prove himself. we have to see what he can do as a coach. you have to be fair about this. one thing we can maybe ask a question about is the process itself. why the hurry? why didn't you interview more candidates? and why didn't you give yourself a greater opportunity to see what was out there? >> eagles owner jeff lorrie fired chip kelly, you'll remember, late last month. oil prices continue to drive down gas prices. several gas stations are advertising prices less than $2 a gallon. nbc 10 found the giant by route 100 in pottstown selling regular gas for $1.97. the average price for a gallon of regular in philadelphia is $2.10. price is $1.80 in delaware. south jersey drivers, as always, paying the lowest in the region, about $1.72. a look at some of the many ways people are marking the

martin luther king jr. day of service across our area. in bucks county, thrift store will get help from volunteers sorting donated clothes that will be sold at the thrift store fashion outlet. and united way of bucks county will hold a book sorting event. books will be given to schools, child care facilities and shelter in the area. stockton university is inviting thousands to participate in a martin luther king day of service in atlantic, cape may and ocean counties. people will do everything from assembling 3d printed parts for prosthetic hands to making children's dolls and feeding rescued horses. at noon, arcadia university is hosting a shredding and e-waste event. people can drop off electronics and documents and donate gently used items and canned goods to help people in need.
