hours. we drop to near zero degrees, this is 7:00 tomorrow morning, so areas north and west through the lehigh valley, areas like pottstown, doylestown, you should be feeling below zero degrees. reading could feel like minus four, poconos minus 8. philadelphia expected to feel like zero degrees, wilmington could feel like a minus one and single digits close to zero through new jersey and delaware. this is dangerous cold as we go into tomorrow morning. better yet, have kids wait in the car with you until the bus gets there. definitely want the heat on tomorrow morning, but a lot of people also talking about the end of this week. we have a big storm approaching the area. let's get more details on that with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn? >> there are different types of winter storms and this type we have more confidence than normal this far ahead of time. there's going to be a pretty significant storm, maybe even a major snowstorm for parts of the

area. that's why we're issuing a first alert for friday and saturday, major winter storm affecting the entire area. many parts of the area are going to have a significant snowstorm. and at the shore, it's going to be a nor'easter, maybe a combination of snow and rain at the shore. of course, the storm is far away from those clouds than we have right now, not even on land in this country. it's out in the pacific ocean, you can see it so clearly, and one of the reasons that we have confidence about the future of this storm is it's already there. we're not having to wait for a storm to develop along the east coast like is the case sometimes. so as we go into friday afternoon, this particular computer model is slower than some of the others. there's the low pressure, blue indicates the track of the snowfall, and the brighter the color the heavier the snow, so by saturday noon we've got that band of heavier snow, it's

coming right across our area. but there may be a complication with some warmer air trying to come in from the ocean, so we're pretty confident it's going to be all snow north and west. in the philadelphia area it will start as snow but could change to a bit of a mix or even rain before it goes back to snow. that complicates snow totals. and at the shore, snow changing to rain we're pretty confident about that, too. of course, that affects snow totals, as well. more on the timing of this storm and when we're going to warm up also with the seven day in a few minutes. >> all right, we are still a few days out, so stay with nbc 10 as this storm approaches and the forecast gets more precise. we'll have updates on the air, also on the nbc 10 news app all week long leading up to the storm's arrival. the next era is under way for the philadelphia eagles. doug pederson arrived in town today and the birds officially announced him as the team's new head coach.

to you. >> john, thanks. we have new information about the deadly shooting at a philadelphia homeless shelter to tell you about, killed one worker, injured another over the weekend and we'll show you the guy police are looking for. they released a picture of him today. investigators say john brock opened fire after he was evicted from that shelter. nbc 10's rosemary connors is live at police headquarters. you talked to police and the victim's father, got a firsthand account of what happened. tell us more. >> reporter: i did. here at police headquarters investigators announced an arrest warrant for the suspect in this case, john brock, wanted for murder and attempted murder. i also went to temple hospital today where the victim who survived is being treated. he's expected to make a full recovery. his father told me what his son shared with him about how the violence unfolded and how the suspect got back into that facility. >> they had the door open for the workers to come in and he came in and just started, you

know, started shooting. >> reporter: grateful may be the best way to describe robert today. his 26-year-old son, an employee at the station house homeless shelter in north philadelphia, is the only victim who survived yesterday's double shooting at the facility. the other victim, 43-year-old edward barksdale, lost his life. according to police, the violence stemmed from an altercation with 32-year-old john brock, a shelter resident who showed up past curfew and drunk earlier in the weekend. barham and his coworkers barksdale tried to help the man. >> he was trying to get the guy the room where you have, and he was trying to get him to go into the room and relax, but the guy was causing a scene and disrupting everyone else, so the cops were called. >> reporter: police say officers escorted brock from the shelter and dropped him off at a nearby hospital for an evaluation. >> he was irate. he left, the police took him and somewhere between that time and

memory here and whatever sparked the flames may be forever buried in this debris. fierce flames tore through the historic hillcrest tavern at 5:00 this morning and as soon as the images posted to social media, regulars bundled up to see the devastation up close. robert and wanda never imagined their dinner thursday night would be their last one here. >> this was our cheers, we come here quite often. going to miss a lot of friends and workers there. >> reporter: 75 firefighters battled extreme conditions as the building collapsed and ice formed underneath their feet and on their gear. >> they were literally coming out of the back of the building, even doing exterior operations, solid sheet of ice. >> courthouse opened to allow crews to keep warm and safe. the vitality of the hillcrest dates back 234 years, the coach room built in 1782. denise worked there 26 years. >> i loved the shop. i had fun, everybody was

near 26th street. we're told there are apartments above the store. no word yet on any injuries and we'll continue to follow the situation as fire crews continue to battle the blaze in north philadelphia. crews are still working in the cold to repair a broken water main in chester county. lines started gushing water in east whiteland township around 7:00 this morning. the chester county country club is the only place affected by this break. the water department is hoping to have service restored by the end of today. ♪ >> music helped to inspire the crowds at dr. martin luther king jr.'s memorial in washington, d.c., today. fbi director james comey spoke at this morning's ceremony. and today marks the 30th

anniversary of the federal holiday honoring dr. king. his actual birthday was this past friday. he would have been 87 years old. people throughout the area are paying tribute to the civil rights leader today. pennsylvania governor tom wolf was on hand for the traditional ringing of the liberty bell to honor dr. king. this ceremony began in 1986, which was the first year king's birthday was celebrated as a national holiday. gerard college is playing host to philadelphia's signature mlk day of service. some 5,000 volunteers are taking part in 150 service projects across the region. people from all walks of life came together to give back to the community in a spirit of dr. king's legacy. >> you have a responsibility that dr. martin luther king left us and the bible states we should seek the younger

generation, so we should, therefore, carry on his legacy of our new generation coming forth. >> dr. king took part in a desegregation protest at gerard college months after being awarded the nobel peace prize in 1965. in camden, members of the community were fired up to give back. they used their day off to spruce up the gym at the north camden county center. volunteers added a fresh coat of paint to the walls there and the acting governor and local police officers were among those who rolled up their sleeves to help out. in delaware, the kids from brand jiywine school held a clothing drive to mark the day of service. the kids collected bags full of clothes. they'll be delivered to the friendship house homeless ministry shelters in wilmington. and this martin luther king day was also a chance for local kids

to get involved and help others. coming up at 4:55, nbc 10's lauren mayk will show us how the city's young people made a difference in their communities. the three main democratic candidates marked martin luther king day in south carolina, hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley among those who spoke at the king at the dome event, that was started in 2000. the confederate flag was removed in july after nine people were shot and killed at a historic black church in charleston. last night the gloves came off between clinton and sanders, the two clashing repeatedly in the most intense debate of the democratic campaign so far. it was the final debate among democrats ahead of the iowa caucuses in two weeks and the fireworks exploded from the start, first over who's tougher on gun control, then health care. clinton accused sanders of trying to kill obamacare by

proposing a new medcare program. >> there are things we could do to improve it, but to tear it up and start over again, pushing our country back into that kind of contentious debate i think is the wrong direction. >> this is nonsense. what a medicare for all program does is finally provide in this country health care for every man, woman, and child as a right. >> donald trump's name came up a few times, but not nearly as often as clinton's did during the republican debate. speaking of donald trump, more potential trouble for the republican front-runner this afternoon. lawmakers in the uk are debating a petition to ban trump from britain for his antimuslim remarks. parliament took up the topic after half a million people signed a petition calling for trump to be excluded. under british law, any petition supported by 100,000 people is considered for parliamentary debate. trump spent the day in liberty university in virginia, where ted cruz launched his

wipe the windshields and get on your way. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> all right, good tips there. >> plenty of inventory still left, but that might change in a couple days. >> sure might. let's check in with glenn "hurricane" schwartz who's watching the progress at this early point this weekend. glenn? >> yeah, and this far ahead of the storm, depends on the type of storm and how cold it is at the start. with these types of conditions, we have a little extra confidence that there is going to be a pretty significant storm later in the week and into saturday. it's too early to talk about specific snow amounts for specific towns, but this does have a lot of potential to be a major winter storm for much of the area. one of the issues is at the shore and closer to philadelphia, where it could possibly change to rain. and that would limit the snow totals and complicate things. we're also going to get a lot of wind at the shore and coastal flooding, so let's not forget

that. we've got bitter winds through tuesday. that's for sure. we have a lot of sunshine out there now. still plenty cold and windy. 25 degrees, wind 21 miles an hour, 8 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday, and it was cold yesterday. it's 12 in mount pocono and in the low to mid 20s just about everywhere else. so look at that, 22 in glassboro and wilmington. and it's not as if it's calm out there. we do have wind on top of that making it feel even colder. and the wind is going to still be with us for much of the night. we're going to be seeing the temperature drop down into the teens, but look at the way it's going to feel. this is in philadelphia by 5:00, 7:00 a.m., 1 below zero according to this particular computer model. the wind is howling out there, gusting over 30 miles an hour in some of the area, 25 to 30 in other places. the wind chills calculated based

on the sustained wind, not the gusts, even there, places like reading 5, mount pocono 5 below. it's going to go lower than that tonight, because not only is the temperature going down, the wind is still going to be with us. so as we go through the middle of the night, we're talking about wind chills below zero, even down to philadelphia, as you saw, and then single digits, even 11:00 tomorrow morning. way colder than it felt today. tomorrow afternoon we may actually get above 10 for the wind chill and by tomorrow night it's cold again. well, there are a few flurries around the poconos, but that's about it. otherwise it's dry and going to stay dry for a while. this is the storm that we're watching, and it's already well developed. it already has lots of moisture. and so we're not waiting for this to develop, it's there. it's a matter of the track and the temperatures and other details, not whether it's going to happen or not.

all right, here's the future feels like temperatures as we go through the night and into tomorrow. you can see that it's just going to be bitter cold for quite a while. then we wait for the storm to develop. that's not going to come in until probably friday afternoon. some models have it coming in a little earlier than others, but the general track is a fairly classic one to our south, lot of moisture, intense storm, and that means a lot of snow for some parts of the area, especially north and west where it's likely to be all snow. little bit more of a question to see if there is mixing in the philadelphia area, and it does look like it's going to change to rain at the shore where there will be significantly less snow accumulation, but significant problems from coastal flooding. got a full moon this weekend. windy and bitter cold tonight with wind chills near zero. 15 degrees for the low in philadelphia.

this is nbc 10 news. >> well, you can feel the cold just looking at these guys out braving the elements in camden. and this bitter cold is just the beginning of a one-two punch of winter weather this week. >> glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back now with how long it's going to be before we see this storm. glenn? >> yeah, and it's a combination, of course, not just the cold, because the wind is going to keep up for at least another 24 hours. camera shaking since it is so windy out there right now, and the wind doesn't really diminish a whole lot overnight in this kind of a pattern. so it's 25 degrees in philadelphia. that's as warm as it's gotten all day. 25 in atlantic city, 21 in pottstown, reading, allentown, 21 in lancaster. with the wind it feels it's in

the single digits in most of the area, down to five now in wilmington. this is not as low as it's going to go. it's going to be lower than this by tomorrow morning's rush. see what happens with the hour by hour, we're talking about temperatures and wind chills going down below zero, even by 11:00 tonight in reading. and by tomorrow morning, look at that, minus 3, minus 4 in some areas, minus 4 in reading. that's 7:00 a.m. and right near zero in much of the rest of the area. then it doesn't warm up a whole lot during the morning. by noontime we're barely to 10 in philadelphia. not even to 10 in other parts of the area. so yeah, it's going to be bitter cold, wind chills down near zero by tomorrow morning. we'll see when it's going to warm up and details on the winter storm in a few minutes. >> many people are spending the weekend on the slopes.

this is a live look from camelback mountain ski resort in the poconos. many resorts are trying to salvage the ski season that started slowly because of the lack of snow. doug shimell went up to spring mountain today. how busy is it, doug? >> reporter: very busy. this is exactly what ski areas like spring mountain need, long holiday weekends with big crowds, lots of families, pent-up demand for skiing coming up and spending money. >> this year we thought winter wasn't going to come. >> reporter: with almost seven weeks of skiing lost to a warm winter, ski areas like spring mountain never got the christmas through new year's crowd. >> we're just a little ski area, lost a quarter million that week of net income. >> reporter: that is why a cold snow making martin luther king weekend is crucial to recapturing some of that revenue. >> we got a majority of our

trails open, chair lifts are open, allowed us to charge full rates for the weekend, which may not be good news for the customer, but it's great news for us. it helps out a whole lot. >> reporter: what brought out a lot of skiers was the psychological dusting of real snow on sunday. >> very antsy. when it first started snowing, we were so excited. we were like screaming basically. >> okay, is it going to be more, going to be more, so gets you in the mood, winter wonderland type thing. >> reporter: spring mountain doesn't have an indoor water park to bridge them through a rough winter, just loyal customers. >> we will be back up here in a few weeks also, yeah. it's closer, less gas, and it's a little bit cheaper than the other places. >> reporter: spring mountain says they've got seven trails open now, but if the weather keeps up like this, they should be able to continue making snow and get all nine trails open by week's end. live in spring mountain, doug shimell, nbc 10 news.

pederson as their next head coach. pederson flew into philadelphia this morning, met with staffers and employees over at the novacare complex, and an official news conference comes your way tomorrow. you can watch it live on nbc 10 and the nbc 10 news app. and other news now, calls for help went unanswered at a florida 911 center because an operator was on a call of her own. she was ordering lunch. >> pick up or delivery? >> it's going to be for delivery, please. it's a business, the police department. >> that's the 911 operator making an eight-minute call for pizza delivery back in september. meanwhile an eye doctor's office was trying to call for an ambulance after a patient had a seizure. no one was picking up at the 911 center. the patient is fine but the operator didn't respond to the call despite audible tones and visual alerts and she, as you might expect, has been reprimanded. a college basketball player

could be suspended for taking out his frustration on the referee. watch oregon state's player trip the ref. reed was upset over the call yesterday so he sticks out his leg and the referee goes tumbling. the ref kicked league out of the game and now college officials are investigating the incident. >> denise, just got this update, he's suspended four games as a result of that incident. there you go. after the threat of a ban, there could be deals in the works to allow horse drawn carriages in new york city after all. >> coming up next, new rules owners would have to follow to keep their horses at work in central park. plus, high-rise buildings and your heart. why one could be bad for the other when nbc 10 news at 4:00 continues.

shipping packages at the post office got more expensive. rates for priority mail packages go up by nearly 10% this week.

rates for the faster priority mail express jumped more than 14%. it's the first price hike for either service in more than three years. a new deal could save horse drawn carriages from a threatened ban in new york's central park. it would reduce the number of licensed horses in the park from 180 to 95 rather than ban them altogether. a new stable would also be built in the park for the animals. the agreement still needs to be approved by city council. as the floor numbers go up in a tall building, the odds of surviving cardiac arrest go down. a new study of people who suffered cardiac arrest while living in a high-rise building found survival rates were highest on the first few floors but dropped steadily on the way up. most people living above the 16th floor died. researchers say giving first responders sole access to elevators in an emergency could save more lives. the man behind the eight-minute iconic song "american pie" is under arrest.

weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, the arctic air mass that came in overnight may be helping to set up a potential winter storm for later in the week and into saturday, late friday and into saturday. some places are going to get a lot of snow out of this. the possibility is that some places toward the shore will change to rain and that makes it a more complicated forecast for snow amounts, going to wait at least another day before we get into that kind of detail. bitter winds, though, will continue through tuesday. there's just no doubt about that. had a lot of sunshine out there today. 25 degrees, the wind is 21 miles an hour. 8 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. and as we go through the night tonight, temperatures just gradually goes down, but the wind stays up and so by 11:00 it's 17 degrees, feeling like 4.

by 7:00 tomorrow morning, 14 degrees, feeling like 1 below zero. and that is in philadelphia. of course, it will feel colder north and west. 25 in philadelphia now, 21 in reading, pottstown, allentown, 23 in mount holly, and the wind has been gusting over 30 miles an hour for much of the day right now reading at 31 and wilmington 32 miles an hour. those are the windiest places at the moment. and it feels like it's in the single digits in many parts of the area, 5 in wilmington. we have a few snow flurries in the last hour or so up toward the poconos, but nothing significant. lake effect snow really hitting new york state because of the way the wind direction is. the storm that we're talking about is way out to the west. hasn't even reached this country yet, and so when the observations are taken out over the water, not as precise as when the storm would hit the

west coast, so it's another reason that it's too soon to be talking about specific snow totals for specific neighborhoods. that will come. got a few days left before the storm hits. look at these wind chills as we go through the night tonight and into tomorrow morning, close to zero in philadelphia, minus 1 in downingtown and allentown. that is cold. and it doesn't really warm up a whole lot tomorrow. about the highest it gets is about 13 in the philadelphia area. then tomorrow night it's cold again. into wednesday morning. then wednesday afternoon we're a little bit less brutally cold. then we look back to the west, western storm redeveloping near texas and moving to near atlanta. this would be the path of the heavier snow, and to track the low, of course, is very important and the best track for

heavy snow in the philadelphia area is right near north of virginia and a lot of the models are doing that, setting it up that way, so we do have the concern that there may be a lot of snow, especially in areas that are all snow like northern counties, there may be a mix in the philadelphia area and very likely there's going to be a change to rain at the shore, limiting amounts, but they are going to get socked with the wind and coastal flooding. 15 for the low during the night tonight and wind chills down near zero tomorrow. winds gusting to 40 miles an hour again and temperatures just about the same as today. then wednesday morning it's bitter cold, little bit less brutal thursday and into friday, but friday we've got the first alert starting because the snow's coming in. generally in the afternoon and lasting into saturday. >> all right, glenn will keep us posted on all of it. meantime, thousands across the area using their day off today to give back. >> next, the work being done to

today is the day the nation celebrates civil rights leader dr. martin luther king jr. >> and here in our area people marked the day by volunteering their time. nbc 10's lauren mayk stopped at

several events around philadelphia today and is joining us live with more. lauren? >> reporter: good afternoon. we are at martin luther king high school this afternoon. this is one of the places really benefiting from this day of service, and it is also where young people are getting involved. inside martin luther king high school, the walls pop with orange and purple. >> we wanted to beautify the school. we wanted to change the institutional gray paint that was on the doors of the school. >> reporter: the project manager had a specific idea of who should make it happen. did you ever think about just hiring someone to do the painting or did you always want the students to do it? >> i wanted them to be involved. you have to be part of the service. you have to be part of the labor. you have to give something. it's not going to always be given to you. >> reporter: here and across the region teachers and parents and family members urged young people into a day of service for martin luther king day. in center city they helped adult volunteers preparing disabe ini

hot food. >> socks and underwear, as well. >> honoring martin luther king jr.'s memory by helping other people like he helps people. >> reporter: sunshine brought her godson with her. >> we're just middle class people ourselves, but we can help somebody else. >> reporter: is that sort of part of this sort of carrying it through generation to generation? >> yes. if you want someone to take care of you when you have a slip-up in life, you have to help somebody yourself. >> reporter: at martin luther king high school, even students from another high school chipped in. for lauren, helps here was part of a tradition she's already used to. >> every year since i want to say i was in elementary school i've done community service on mlk day, because my mom told me it was a day on, not a day off. >> reporter: a day on, not a day off. and i asked her whether she would continue this tradition year after year. she tells me she can't imagine missing this day because it is

dangerous cold with wind chills near zero degrees. first alert weather day is out for the overnight hours tonight, into tomorrow morning. this, again, is dangerous cold with the bitter winds around, so with the cold air in place and strong winds, because the winds aren't going to let up for the next couple days, it's going to feel near zero degrees by the time many of you walk outside tomorrow morning. here is the current feels like temperature when you factor in the wind. in philadelphia feels like 9 degrees right now. allentown feels like 4 degrees, pottstown feels like 5. minus 5 in mount pocono, much of south jersey and delaware feeling 5 to 10 degrees. winds are still sustained, anywhere from 15 to 25 miles an hour. now look at the actual temperature. we feel about 15 degrees colder than the actual temperature, currently we are mostly in about the mid to low 20s across the area, but as we go overnight, wind is going to stay up, so as we go through the overnight hours, feels like temperature is going to k
