nowhere. i heard a loud boom. i said, we gotta get everyone out of this building. >> neighbors evacuated. a fire so big, it took more than 100 firefighters to get it under control. >> it got worse and worse. >> good evening. >> go firefighters were injured in the battle. the weather didn't do them any favors. take a look. the bitter cold led to icy conditions. that led to ice on the streets. >> live team coverage from the fire fight to the evacuation. we begin with sheena parveen who is tracking the cold and the winter storm. >> it's very cold outside right now. well below freezing. with the wind, it feels colder right now the windchill that feels like temperature, 11 degrees in philadelphia. 7 in pottstown. 9 in millville. here is what it will be tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., very similar to what we have right now. another very cold start tomorrow morning. make sure you bundle up.

now we are looking at the end of the week, this is our approaching winter storm. now we're looking at friday through the overnight period, snow approaching the area. now with this storm, all day today we have been talking about two different scenarios. the first scenario would be giving more snow to the area and most of the area really with the storm track being closer to shore. take a look at what it shows moving up the carolinas, dumping snow north and west. the track closest to our area. what we expect, heavy snow north and west. philadelphia, mainly snow. new jersey and delaware, snow to rain. we expect a lot of windy conditions at the shore with the good possibility of some flooding there as well. scenario number two, the storm tracks offshore. this would change where we see the heavy snow. you see it saturday, that puts it out in the atlantic. the heavy snow band different in new jersey and delaware. philadelphia would see snow but the lowest amount if any would

be north and west. a difference here. but it doesn't have to be that different of a track to give us big differences on land. coming up, we will talk about this. we will take a better look at it and have more details on what we know now. >> back to the story we brought you as breaking news on nbc 10 news and on our mobile app. for two hours we watched the flames grow during this apartment fire in center city. tonight, we still don't know how it started. >> keith jones is live in center city. this was a tough one to battle. we know two firefighters were injured. >> reporter: just found out one of them suffered a twisted ankle. another one suffered minor injuries. let me show you what's happening behind me. they just turned off the water. they have been hitting it for 6 1/2 hours. not only are they fighting the fire, but i want to show you this. at this intersection, you could see the water here stuck to the the slush and ice. >> this is insane.

>> reporter: flames out of control. >> right behind my building. >> reporter: captured by neighbors. >> it was eight to ten feet high of flames. i heard a boom. >> reporter: a home oern watown watched. >> i heard them communicating saying we have to do this. then i said -- i heard a boom. i said, i gotta get out of here. >> reporter: after more than 20 apartments were evacuated, nearby homes evacuated. firefighters unreeling hose. wet firefighters, ice covered suits and helmets working taking turns and numb with cold according to the fire chief. >> worry about frostbite. there's issues when you have cold weather. >> reporter: frozen water lines and ice on the roof. and the street. that's why they spread salt. i'm told two firefighters suffered minor injuries. >> the longer you are in the cold, you lose dexterity. you have to operate equipment and saws.

it's challenging. >> reporter: no one was hurt. the acting fire chief tells me there was fire in the basement and fourth floor. it took hours for firefighters in the cold. >> we have 20 gallons of water. >> reporter: this man is talking about drinking water, not to mention hot coffee care of the salvation army. >> we have another truck on its way to continue on doing the service. we have hand warmers and gloves. >> reporter: firefighters took advantage. life on spruce street interrupted. fortunately, everyone made it out alive. back live. the acting fire chief said it's going to be a long night. they are investigating for hot spots here. an inspector from the department of licenses and inspections will come in to deem this place safe. what we can tell you here before they figure out what caused this thing, those two firefighters are expected to make full recoveries. keith jones, nbc 10 news. our live team coverage continues with denise nakano. >> she's with the neighbors who had to be evacuated. >> reporter: people who were

displaced by the fire are being told to come here to 22nd and spruce to trinity church, a couple blocks away from what is an active scene. about 25 people have come through here to get out of the cold and get help. >> you could see it from the window of the third floor, it was coming out. we thought it was going to stop but it kept getting bigger. >> reporter: residents describe how they escaped and managed to make sure others got out safely. >> there was smoke on the basement. it was starting to build up. we all got out. we were trying to knock on as many doors as we can to make sure sure nobody was there. >> reporter: it pushed some residents around the burning apartment building into shelters like this one. a delivery of hot coffee arrived at trinity church, where fire victims turned to for guidance and relief from the cold. >> we're taking everybody's name. we're making sure to figure out what their needs are and how we can start helping them.

>> reporter: police, fire and the atf interviewed residents and witnesses. emergency management and the retd cross took care of basic needs. some people came to the church hoping to be reunited with friends and loved ones. >> i know he is safe. i'm just trying to find him now if i can get lucky. >> reporter: people took in the fire fight from street corners and lingered long after the fire was brought under control just before 8:00 tonight. >> we came home to just hope that everyone -- anyone in the building was okay. >> reporter: the red cross is helping seven families tonight. trinity church located at 22nd and spruce will be open throughout the night and into the morning. live in center city, i'm denise nakano, nbc 10 news. sky force 10 flew over another fire in north philadelphia. flames here erupted at a row home just after 9:15. paramedics rushed one person to the hospital. we talked to a neighbor who

tells us he caught a woman who jumped from a window at the home. >> she was on the third floor. i just told her to jump. it was just like that. i had to catch her. she jumped from the third to the second and i caught her from the second. >> fire officials tell us they are looking into what caused this fire. rescue crews had to free a driver from a car after it slammed into i a tractor-trailer tonight. around 8:30. you can see the car trapped under the trailer there. thankfully, the driver suffered minor injuries only. police are trying to sort out what led to the crash. understand what it feels like to win in this city. the city hasn't won and this organization hasn't won in quite some time. it's my job to turn that around. >> doug pederson addressing the local media for the first time today. >> the new sideline boss eager

to turn things around. he is no stranger to philadelphia. he played for the eagles, was a coach here and thinks this team can compete right now. >> john clark was at today's news conference introducing him. >> i thought did he well. he is very well spoken. he is confident and honest. he has a presence. he says he will hold players accountable and he is going to communicate well with them. >> be yourself. >> that's the best advice doug pederson has gotten from andy reid and many others. he feels he is ready to be a head coach. >> i think the people that i have been surrounded with in my career, the done shulas, andy reids, have prepared me. >> the owner said they had 25 candidates. they got it down to ten. he says doug was the best leader of them all. >> you've got to be comfortable in your own skin in order to be

were some controversial comments. prior to pederson taking the podium, jason kelce's name came up. he was called a lap dog for whoever the coach is. then he referred to the movie "malcolm x" and made another remark that's coming under fire. take a listen. >> essentially what you are getting here is kelce is the house negro. that's essentially his job. yes, sir, yes, boss, absolutely, boss, yes, sir, boss. that is jason kelce. whoever the head coach will be, he will be all over that head coach. >> he later apologized. kelce tweeted out this response. it read in part --

new at 11:00, positive news tonight for an officer who survived the ambush on the streets of west philadelphia. we're told officer jesse hartnett has been upgraded to good condition. he has been hospital iedzhoppipd with a severe arm injury. edward archer said he did the attack in the name of isis. coming up, i'm tracking the winter storm we have been talking about. i will show you updated looks at the timing and what different tracks could mean as far as heavy snow across the area. that's straight ahead. plus, hover board history. the push for a new law in philadelphia that could be the first of its kind in the nation.

abington road. firefighters are trying to get it under control. no reports of injuries. we will have updates as we get more information. new at 11:00, there could be new rules for children regarding the popular hover boards in philadelphia. this comes to us from our partners at newsworks. a councilman proposed kids wearing helmets and knee pads. the law would be the first of its kind in the country. now to decision 2016. a high profile endorsement for donald trump just days ahead of the iowa caucuses. trump brought sarah palin on stage with him at a campaign rally at iowa state university. palin is glad to see trump, quote, going rogue left and right. the former vice presidential nominee and one-time alaska governor told the crowd she believes trump will make our military stronger along with securing e ining our borders an

>> jobs are in jeopardy at johnson and johnson. they are cutting 3,000 jobs over the next two years. they say all of the layoffs will come from its medical devices division. it's unclear which parts of the country will be affected. we do know the company owns a medical devices subsidiary in west chester. it could save johnson & johnson a billion dollars a year by 2019. from jersey shore, revel could get a second chance. the new owner plans to reopen the property as a casino, but a smaller one than before. construction on a new water park at the former revel could begin as early as may. the new casino likely would not open until at least after the summer. tonight, investigators are 2, killed a homeless man. >> he was sleeping outside during dangerously cold temperatures. randy gyllenhaal reports from trenton. >> reporter: that 40-year-old man was found dead inside this

trenton neighborhood that's filled with a number of boarded up homes, vacant properties and neighbors tell me he used to sleep right here on this stoop using that blanket for warmth. >> right here. >> reporter: they would see him out here almost every day camped in front of a boarded up home. >> it's covered. >> reporter: neighbors show us the spot where the homeless man they knew only as jose would sometimes fall asleep. >> i always used to see him there just always him doing nothing there. just holding his arms together like he was cold. >> reporter: trenton police found him dead behind the property monday morning. the cause of death remains under investigation, but it came after a frigid night with windchills in the single digits. >> it's real cold out here. i don't like standing right here right now it's so cold. he shouldn't have been out here sleeping in the back. there should have been some way he should have been able to get help. >> how do we prevent that? >> reporter: this woman runs the

rescue mission homeless shelter in trenton which is bursting at the seams, more than 200 seeking warmth tonight. >> it's very unfortunate. had he come by, maybe we could have helped him. i don't know. >> reporter: according to her records, the victim never tried to seek shelter here. it can be tough sometimes to convince them to drop in. but their staffers are out on the streets every day trying. >> there are some people that refuse services on a night like this though, somebody mentions it to them, they are more likely to come. somebody somewhere, some day cared about this person hopefully. this was a person. this was somebody's family member. >> reporter: again, officials in trenton are still working to determine an exact cause of death as the shelters here remain beyond capacity for yet another night. in trenton, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. we are looking at a very cold night tonight with windchills near zero degrees as

we go -- near ten degrees as we go into tomorrow morning. aside from that, we are also watching the winter storm by the end of the week. the model uncertainty is still there. so we will show you that in a second and what it could mean. we expect snowfall, some of the snowfall being heavy. but it depends on the track of the storm who can expect the heaviest of the snow. here is the current feels like temperature. feels like 7 in pottstown, 11 in allentown and philadelphia feels like single digits in delaware and new jersey. tomorrow morning, still a very cold start. the winds are still up across the area. it's windy, making it feel ten degrees colder. as we go overnight and through the day tomorrow, still feeling colder than the air temperature. of by noon tomorrow, we should be around 30 degrees. at least in some spots a couple degrees warmer. but it's going to be a cold day tomorrow. we are dry locally. tomorrow night we could see a few light snow showers moving from this system moving through

chicago right now. i don't think that's going to be a big deal. big weather story across the pacific northwest. this moisture across seattle to vancouver, this is what will become a winter storm for us by the end of the week and going into the weekend. in the meantime, here is a look at the feels like temperature overnight and into the morning hours. 8:00 feeling like 13 degrees in philadelphia, ten in wilmington and millville feeling like 12 and allentown a bitter start to the day. through the afternoon, not as gusty as it was today. it's go ing to be feeling like low 20s as we go into tomorrow evening. we have a few light snow showers that will try to move through. thursday looks dry. friday is the day we will definitely be watching going into the weekend. low pressure across the carolinas. there you see snow with it. that's friday 6:00 p.m. still to the south of us. then it will be moving in. we are talking about two different tracks here. a small shift will mean a big difference. some computer models are g

disagreeing. the first option, the storm would be closer to us, heaviest snow north and west. through the philadelphia area but a change over to rain in parts of new jersey and delaware. the second one is where the storm would be a little farther out to sea. we would see snow over new jersey and delaware, the least amount for the poconos and lehigh valley. this is another thing we are watching very closely. more updates as we go into tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon and the rest of the week. what we know so far is a storm will be impacting us friday later in the day, late afternoon and friday night into saturday. coastal flooding is a big concern. especially with the new moon. new at 11:00 tonight, we are expecting mr ining plowable sno philadelphia. the heavy snow timing that is starting to come a little more into focus. what you can -- what we are watching, the exact track, it's still a little uncertain. that track is going to really depend on that rain/snow line,

sam bradford, doug thinks sam is a top notch quarterback. he thinks sam would fit perfectly in his offense. it sounds like doug would like to keep him. >> i do like him. listen, i've always liked him. i liked him when he came out of college. i think he's a good fit for this organization. he came on strong at the end of the season this past year. he did some nice things. >> doug says he will keep the special teams coach and the running backs coach. here is the new defensive coordinator, jim schwartz. he was the head coach of the lions and he was in buffalo two seasons ago. this could be a good signing. the eagle rlz sears are searchi head of player personal. tonight, the flyers hosting the map maple leafs. keeps it and scores.
