starts. in maryland they said 11 minutes after the first flakes it was sticking and also gets fairly heavy pretty quickly. this is not just a gradual thing. it's also a huge thing. they center the storm down in georgia and you can see the extent of all of this precipitation. of course, the leading edge coming into the philadelphia area right now, some of it not reaching the ground yet, but it is getting closer and closer to berks county and chester county and in through delaware. we are seeing it hit the ground in delaware. the radar echoes getting even closer to allentown. the darker blues indicating where it's a little bit heavier. you can see some of that in the dover area, across delaware bay, and into parts of cape may county and, obviously, southern sussex county it's snowing pretty hard. the visibility tells us where it's actually reaching the ground and how heavy the snow is, so when you see a ten, it's not snowing.
4:01 pm
nothing more than a flake or two. there it is, dover, central delaware, one-mile visibility, pretty good significant restriction and that means the snow is coming down at a decent clip. by 5:00 it's getting right up to philadelphia, it's covering most of delaware, cape may county, in to chester county, by 6:00 it's getting through montgomery county and through vineland, down through atlantic city, you can see how quickly it's coming through and how quickly we get into those dark blue colors, so it is coming in and it's coming in hard and it's coming in fast. nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen has new information on snow totals as a result. >> yeah, that's right, glenn. temperatures now through the area, everyone is below freezing, so this will start to accumulate once we start to see heavy area snowfall. it's already sticking. take a look at the snow forecasts. the numbers have been increased here around the philadelphia area. we could see anywhere from 17 to
4:02 pm
23 inches. this is going to be a lot of snow falling starting overnight tonight. isolated higher amounts are also possible, so we have some large areas that we could be seeing with some heavy snow moving in overnight and through the day tomorrow. isolated amounts that could be in the upper 20 range, so we'll be watching that very closely. eight to 12 inches near the poconos, four to eight inches there. if you live in areas like upper bucks county, you can see 12 to 17 inches, parts of berks county, as well, extending into new jersey. we'll see that extending into parts of delaware, but we're also going to have a sharper cutoff between some of the highest amounts and lowest amounts close to the shore in case we see the rain/snow line moving in which we expect some mixing at some point during the storm but a lot will be heavy, wet snow moving through the area, especially closer to the rain/snow line. that's where we're going to see the better chance of power outages close to the shore, new jersey and delaware and these
4:03 pm
are going to be the areas where we have the highest chance of the heavy wet snow. for the rest of us, expect that snow accumulating very quickly through tonight and continuing into tomorrow. coming up, glenn will take a closer look at what you can expect with the totals, too, that's straight ahead. >> all right, sheena. a live look at the scene in delaware, this comes from our camera in wilmington, delaware. also people spent the earlier part of the day getting the supplies they need, i filling up at the pump and long lines for gas here in north wilmington. tim furlong drove news force 10 through newcastle and kent counties today. >> tim is live in harrington, how much has fallen? >> reporter: you know, it's funny, about an hour, but take a look outside news force 10, you can see the snow is starting to accumulate and happened quickly. i heard glenn say it, too, it's sticking quicker than it usually does. i thought when i saw the flakes it was going to be okay for a

4:07 pm
we asked some gloucester county residents what the mother nature waiting game has been like with this storm stirring all week long. >> i'm from jersey, i'm yulsed to the snow. we're going to be out anyway, unless it's a state of emergency and tell us we can't come out. >> you're not worried? >> should i be? >> reporter: governor christie called for a news conference at 8:00 tonight in newark, so that state of emergency could be coming and plow drivers also remind you stay off the roads so they can get their work done out there. as we speak, plenty of milk, bread, and eggs on the shelves here and the management tells me they have a truck due to arrive at 8:00 tonight. blizzard or not, they say they'll open their doors tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. live in gloucester township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> thanks. let's head out now for a live look at south philadelphia. this is interstate 95. everything looking pretty good right now. traffic moving along there. crews are out right now readying
4:08 pm
the roads for what will be a long weekend. nbc 10 was in south philadelphia today as crews were loading trucks with salt. salt supply no problem right now because it's been such a mild winter. again, snow emergency will be in effect in philadelphia starting at 9:00 tonight. that means all parked cars have to be moved off snow emergency routes or face towing. >> and i know it can get frustrating during these storms, but it all comes into perspective when you think about the workers working through these conditions and often putting themselves in harm's way so we can stay home warm with our families. >> because of the snow emergency you can park at philadelphia parking authority garages for just $5 starting at 5:00 this afternoon. peco crews working to prevent power outages and stay ahead of this storm before it gets here. nbc 10 was in delaware county this afternoon. crews right there trimming the trees that look like they could come down on power lines under

snowstorm is over. also there are some speed restrictions on the pennsylvania turnpike. it's not your typical plow. and if you see it coming, the pennsylvania turnpike wants you to stay out of its way. >> slow down. >> reporter: with hundreds of miles to clear, the pennsylvania turnpike stashes two of these massive plows that pushes the snow sideways along two lanes of traffic. do you anticipate closing? >> no. no. >> reporter: even though they are talking about blizzard conditions and drifting? >> no, we'll be on top of it. >> reporter: late today speed and vehicle restrictions in sections of the roadway in advance of the storm. while crews are getting ready hoping you'll stay off the roads, parking lots are packed as people flock to stores to get ready to wait out the snow. >> i did buy gloves. >> i bought boots for my daughter last minute for the snowstorm tomorrow. >> reporter: on sale? >> no, of course not. that would be too nice. >> reporter: yeah, i think a lot of people are finding that issue when they hit stores now to pick up needed items like shovels and
4:11 pm
gloves and boots. we saw a lot of that as people were shopping. also we've learned from the pennsylvania turnpike that some of the e-zpass lanes will be closed for safety reasons. here in west chester and many of the towns and boroughs throughout the tricounty area, snow emergencies going into effect, which means you need to remove cars off the streets. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> governor chris christie will address the state of new jersey at 8:00 tonight. christie announced today he's going to take a break from the presidential campaign trail to return to the garden state because of the storm. he was in new hampshire and on thursday christie said he did not plan to return to new jersey, but said he'd re-evaluate if circumstances warranted. as we have been saying, the jersey shore could see snow and flooding this weekend. a live look at cape may this afternoon. let's go back to glenn "hurricane" schwartz to see where the storm is now and what people along the shore can
4:12 pm
expect. glenn? >> yeah, jim, we have seen some changes forecasted for the shore. the blizzard warning that was in effect in the philadelphia area has been extended to the shore in atlantic county and ocean county in new jersey. we still have a winter storm warning for the southern counties, cape may and sussex county. most of the area is under a blizzard warning now. you can see the snow approaching and it is going to start as snow even at the shore, even in southern delaware, there's no doubt about that. radar already picking up some echoes. not necessarily reaching the ground yet, but it will, and as we go into the evening by 9:00, it's still snowing, but we may start to see a changeover to rain, at least in some portions of the coastline as we go into tomorrow morning. and that may prevent the snow from being as heavy right at the coast, so we're predicting four to eight inches right at the
4:13 pm
beaches. eight to 12 just inland, and 12 to 17 inches in the western portion of atlantic county. we do expect a lot of power outages, though, because it's going to be a heavy wet snow and we're also going to see the strongest winds there. >> all right, glenn. we'll be showing you detailed forecasts for every county in our area so you know what to expect no matter where you live. >> we'll get philadelphia's forecast in less than ten minutes. first we stay at the jersey shore with more on the final preparations people are making for the anticipated flooding. ted greenberg is live in atlantic city. ted? >> reporter: well, jackie and jim, many people in this neighborhood are very worried. many of them were devastated by hurricane sandy and this time they are doing everything they can to protect their property. worried about how high the water will rise, scott haines piled up
4:14 pm
sandbags outside his atlantic city home today, ahead of the nor'easter set to pound the jersey shore with serious flooding. >> just sealing up everything where water can penetrate the house. i wasn't prepared for sandy, but this storm i'll be ready. >> reporter: he lives yards from the bay in a low lying part of the resort hit hard by sandy. now concerns are el brated again for what could be the worst flooding since the 2012 hurricane. >> we had dreams about water after you see it. when god comes knocking, he comes, and there's no stopping him. >> we are asking people and i know they've heard it before, stay home, but they really need to stay home. >> reporter: they are prepared for evacuations if absolutely necessary, but he says it's a scenario they are trying to avoid because of the dangerous mix of weather conditions set to hit the coast and areas inland. >> we're taking in from flooding and bringing them into
4:15 pm
potentially a foot of snow and they are going to become stranded while driving out to these shelters. >> reporter: however, we have learned a mandatory evacuation has been ordered for a flood prone section of barnegat township, ocean county. all residents that live between the barnegat municipal bathing beach and east bay bridge must leave that area by 10:00 tonight. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. our first alert team coverage continues now up in the air. nbc 10's george spencer live in sky force 10 above a very crowded parking lot in south philly. what do you see there, george? >> reporter: yeah, talk about a prestorm behive of activity. you can see the huge line of shopping carts passing in front of the walmart here in south philadelphia. and a parking lot that is daeflt beyond your typical friday afternoon crowds as people complete their standard before the storm purchases that you
4:16 pm
heard cydney long talking about earlier. parking lot, as you can see in these live pictures from above, is packed. we see taxi cabs passing through here, dropping people off to pick up their supplies. the good news is, hopefully the people inside stopping in the parking lot right now are picking up the supplies, taking care of their errands, then heading home all set to begin riding out this storm. we will be monitoring the storm from sky force 10 high above the city of philadelphia to give you the best vantage point. we'll be back with you guys shortly. for now, over the walmart in south philadelphia, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> a lot of parked cars there, what about traffic out there? a lot of people trying to get home before the starm gets under way. >> jessica boyington joining us now. >> we're out in new jersey right now looking at 295, you can see northbound and southbound, heading into trenton or the 42 freeway or back to philadelphia
4:17 pm
on to 95 you're going to be in some delays. the vine street expressway in center city, of course, right around 24th street, really seeing huge delays approaching the schuylkill westbound and approaching 95 if you're headed eastbound. few accidents going on, one on 95 northbound and another one on 95 southbound right before the blue route causing backups. update for mass transit, all service suspended for septa starting at 4:00 tomorrow morning and that will be at least in effect for 24 hours. also excluding the broad street line and market/frankford service for emergencies. the northeast corridor is running on a modified service, as well. more details to come for that. watch for snow emergency routes. no parking there or your car will be towed. check philadelphiastreets.com for a list of the streets. >> all right, jessica. let's take a live look at eighth and market streets. how's it looking in center city right now? pretty quiet for a friday afternoon, quieter than usual because people headed out early to avoid this storm.
4:18 pm
people hunkering down for the weekend as the storm approaches our area and our team coverage continues now with lauren mayk. >> lauren, you learned city hall did not send workers home early today. >> reporter: that's right, they are working regular hours today, unless, of course, they are working on emergencies and plowing for this weekend. jim, as you mentioned, this is time the folks are starting to hunker down in their neighborhoods and that means probably checking out what is open around you. we stopped by a popular restaurant today checking them out and they are keeping the pizzas coming during the storm. they are expecting their crowd might be a little bit more local, folks stopping in for a pie, maybe stopping in for some takeout and they are stocked up. >> ordering system a little bit, had to get ahead more than we'd like to, so if we can't get deliveries tomorrow or sunday, won't be able to again until monday, so definitely stocked up pretty heavy and hopefully have
4:19 pm
enough to get through the weekend. >> reporter: you know, they like some other businesses, they are keeping an eye on their employees and especially those who have to travel. possibly those who live in new jersey, they might get to stay home. for now, live in center city, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> and the snow is already coming down in parts of the area. >> glenn "hurricane" schwartz is a very busy man, back to show us what's happening now and what philadelphia can expect from this storm, the totals going up, right, glenn? >> that's right. snow moving in quickly, so it's going to be starting within the next couple of hours and not going to end till late saturday night. look how large this thing is. we've got snow from delaware, all the way to memphis. that's a long way. and the rain, of course, down to the southeast. the leading edge of this moving very rapidly and that's why the snow has started so quickly. and we're just about seeing it at least in the clouds aloft,
4:20 pm
still dry at the ground, so it hasn't reached the ground yet in parts of montgomery county and delaware county, but it's getting closer and closer, saturates the air and eventually reaches the ground. there's nothing to stop it. it's snowing in central and southern delaware now, starting to come across to cape may, and as we go through the evening it's just going to be snowing everywhere and getting heavier with the darker blue areas. there's going to be a bit of a changeover, but that's only toward the shore. that is not going to extend toward philadelphia, that's one of the reasons that we expanded the area of heavy snow to atlantic city, eight to 12 inches, 17 to 23 for the philadelphia area, and farther to the south isolated amounts of even more than that. eight to 12 inches even just north of the allentown area. 12 to 17 in the upper portions of those areas. now as we go through the night
4:21 pm
tonight, we're going to be seeing that snow increase, heavy snow all day tomorrow, stay home for that, you can play in it on sunday, and probably on monday, because we're not going to clean this thing up very quickly, especially with the wind. it blows everything around, creates drifts, and so it's going to take quite a while to get rid of this snow and we have a chance of just some showers in the middle of the week or toward the end of the week, but this is going to end up in at least the top ten snowstorm, maybe the top five by the time it's done. >> especially those drifts with the wind, that could be really tough for people to dig out from it. >> yeah, and the snow is fluffy near the north and west you get, so you can blow the snow around more. the problem towards the shore is the heaviest of the snow causing power outages. so different parts of the area we're going to have different problems. >> a lot to worry about, glenn, thank you. >> if you have one of these, you have all the information you

need at your fingertips. time to download the nbc 10 app, features the latest forecasts, radar, blogs from glenn, live cameras from our nbc 10 sky cam network, and you can also sign up for weather alerts and notifications about school closings and delays, as well. this storm, these numbers are huge, it's going to affect 85 million people across 20 states. >> here's a live look from the white house where snow is already falling furiously. we'll show you some of the areas that have already gotten the most. plus, you hate waiting for the plow truck to make it to your streets? i'm going to show you how you can track them coming up when nbc 10 news at 4:00 continues. first, news force 10 live in delaware. they are seeing the first flakes in delaware. keep it here for coverage of this winter storm baring down on our region.

4:27 pm
the minute. glenn? >> that's right, i'm now predicting 17 to 23 inches right in philadelphia with some more elsewhere. and it's going to start just as people are trying to get home from work. i'm tracking this major snowstorm next. and news force 10 live in delaware. this is route 13 in the dover area. see the snow there starting to collect on the roadway. be careful if you're out there driving now and the rest of this weekend. you're going to want to stay off the roads. keep it here for coverage of this major winter storm now baring down on our region.
4:30 pm
4:31 pm
you can expect blizzard-like conditions, including heavy snow, strong winds, and very little visibility. here's a live look from delaware, where the flakes are already falling. news force 10 is on a snowy route 13 in dover. what you see here is moving into the rest of the area. the nbc 10 first alert weather team has been tracking the storm for days. >> and this afternoon we have team coverage of what you need to know. we begin with first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz who's tracking the storm and when it will arrive. glenn? >> as you can see, it's already arrived in the central and southern portion of delaware, it's moving in very rapidly. it's starting earlier. 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the philadelphia area, of course, before that, south and west, and a little bit after that north and east, but remember it starts sticking, untreated surfaces immediately and going to get heavy pretty quickly. it's already starting to accumulate a little bit in cape may. it's only been snowing a short amount of time, but it gets
4:32 pm
heavy pretty quickly. you can see on the radar darker blue in cape may indicating the snow is starting to pick up and it already is picking up in dover and extreme southern delaware. you can see near the beach getting heavier there. north, not reaching the ground yet, but as it gets to berks county and upper chester county, probably is starting to reach the ground and certainly, in dover, delaware, with the visibility down below a mile it's snowing pretty hard, at least down there. you can see at 6:00 that's where the heaviest snow is likely to be. chester county getting heavy snow, cape may getting heavy snow. the first part of the storm is going to be all snow, even at the shore, and as we go through the evening, it just gets more widespread and gets heavier across the entire area. you don't see any kind of rain until tomorrow morning right at the coastline. so the timeline from now until
4:33 pm
8:00 the snow is spreading south to north, the heaviest snow generally 4:00 a.m. to noon, and then may mix a little bit toward the shore, but gusty winds continue and we've got blizzard conditions that are likely during the day tomorrow and tapers off late tomorrow night. now as far as how much is going to be falling, nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen has now information on that. >> yeah, totals have gone up, like glenn just mentioned and some areas close to about 23 inches and maybe some more in the very high amounts where we see those bursts of snow, heavy wet snow in some spots. here's what it looks like right now, 17 to 23 inches possible. as you get outside that dark blue box we're looking at light blue shaded color 12 to 17 inches. let's zoom in here a bit. if you're in parts of northern delaware, seeing snow approaching, new castle, odessa, wilmington, 17 to 23 inches. isolated amounts even higher than that, chester county we expect to get a lot of snow, too.
4:34 pm
that extends into philadelphia. keep in mind it is major interstates, as well. interior sections of new jersey, even including parts of burlington county and now looking up towards the lehigh valley. parts of montgomery county and bucks county you can see 17 to 23, but then 12 to 17 a little outside that for upper bucks county. lehigh valley could see that amount, too, but eight to 12 closer to the poconos and lehigh valley, including allentown. four to eight farther north and west you go. now the shore and beaches we're going to have to watch this closely. we expect heavy, wet snow, a lot of snow, but the rain/snow line is also expected to move in. that's why you see a cut off, then new jersey, light blue, eight to 12. again, we expect a lot of snow. coming up, glenn will zoom around more across the area and show you a closer look at other counties, that's straight ahead. >> sheena, first alert team coverage continues right now, though. up in the air george spencer once again live in sky force 10 over a gas station here in
4:35 pm
pennsauken, george? >> reporter: gas station a lot of people will know, rwawa righ where highway 70 and 38 come together in pennsauken. not terrible crowds, but certainly a busy gas station here, people filling up before the storm sets in tonight and, obviously, the big tanker truck there offering refuelling for this gas station. it ebbs and it flows, as we've seen at gas stations across the region, we've been atop this afternoon where our line piles up for just a few minutes, people fill up and take off and things calm down. certainly this location right now not looking too bad and we can tell you based on what we've seen from the air, this is a pretty good example of the gas stations we've been checking out, so people are stopping by, but the crowds for now are not terrible. live above pennsauken in sky force 10, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> and our team coverage continues now from the jersey shore where it's snowing there, too. >> aundrea cline-thomas arrived in cape may to a wintery scene,
4:36 pm
aund ray ya? >> reporter: yes, it's been snowing in this area about an hour now. i want to show you it's starting to accumulate a little bit, but this is not what folks here are the most concerned with. they say they can deal with the snow, it's the high wind and high tide that can cause coastal flooding that either meets or exceeds hurricane sandy levels, so that's what folks are concerned with. take a look, this coastal town is practically a ghost town right now. people are heeding the warnings, they got a reverse 911 call telling them to move cars to high ground, have a safe way to heat their homes in case of power outages and to remove things from their balcony, equipment, furniture, things like that. seems folks here are hunkering down. again, heeding the warnings, and just staying inside for now. we're going to be here in cape may and bring you the latest information. reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> as we've been showing you, already snowing in delaware, as

4:38 pm
this shows us the hour by hour intensity. and right now it's less than an inch per hour. as we go through the night, it gets heavier and heavier, and by 4:00 a.m., we're talking about nearly three inches per hour. that is a lot of snow. and then we may get some lulls during the morning, but then it picks up again during the afternoon. lots and lots of hours consecutively with snow. >> all right, glenn, love that detail on the forecast and our county by county forecast will continue in less than ten minutes. >> we're heading to chester and delaware counties next. here's something to remember if you lose power, nbc 10 and our parent company comcast can help you plug in and power up your devices. check the nbc 10 app and nbc10.com for a list of locations. if your power does go out, monitor the storm with the nbc 10 app. we'll be streaming live on nbc10.com the entire weekend. right back with how you can
